Exploring The New York All Tomorrow?s Parties Festival
2008-09-08 17:07:00 Named after the same Velvet Underground song that William Gibson claimed for the third installment of his Bridge trilogy, the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival began in the United Kingdom but has since expanded to encompass installations on either side of the pond. And this year’s New York party happens to be its best ever, at ...

EW's Top 25 Indie Albums; Does Radiohead Really Deserve No.1 Spot?
2008-03-30 22:30:00 Entertainment Weekly?s editors feature the 'Indie Rock 25', profiling albums from 1984 (apparently the ?beginning of indie?) to present, including classics from The Hold Steady, The Replacements, Yo La Tengo, The Pixies, Spoon, Pavement, Built to Spill, and The White Stripes to name a few. Some of the choices are questionable, not for being selected, but for their position in the ranking. For example, why is Radiohead's In Rainbows given the No.1 spot on the list? (Modest Mouse's stunning Lonesome Crowded West release is buried in the list at No. 12, just to name one aberration).Afterall, Radiohead's In Rainbows has been out less than six months, the band pissed off a lot of fans back in October for what was considered a dubious 'first release' and there are many other albums on this list that are well-oiled classics - truly landmark albums that have etched themselves in to the history of 'indie rock' - and beyond - to a greater degree than In Rainbows has or ever can. Yo la tengo - i am not afraid of you and i will beat your ass (2006)

Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago Features Amazing Line-up of Artists; Inclu
2007-08-05 11:16:00 Tens of thousands of music fans have assembled in Chicago's Grant Park on the shores of Lake Michigan to attend the three-day annual Lollapalooza Festival. Despite increasing clouds late Saturday and the chance for showers on Sunday, lower ticket sales than organizers would have wanted (there are still tickets available on the Lollapalooza website, but no word, of course of how many. Nevertheless, a sea of people have gathered in Chicago for one of the most celebrated music festivals in North America. For rock and pop music fans, especially those with modern tastes, the dizzing array of artists and bands playing at the festival is overwhelming, and unfortunately conflicting as there are many cases in which popular artists and groups are playing at the same time but on different stages, making it a hard choice for fans. Altogether, there are some 100 performers playing on nine stages for three dog days of summer. Some of the top billed acts include popular indie and rock artists suc...

Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
2007-03-11 16:43:00 After years as one of indie rock's standard-bearing groups, Yo La Tengo surpasses itself with And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out. A culturally literate, emotionally rich album, on songs like "Let's Save Tony Orlando's House," "The Crying of Lot G," and "The Last Days of Disco," it alludes to The Simpsons, enigmatic author Thomas Pynchon and independent films while exploring the comforting, confining, complex aspects of relationships. "Our Way to Fall" sets Ira Kaplan's recollection of falling in love to a dreamy, down-to-earth backdrop of gently brushed drums, luminous organs and vibes; "The Crying of Lot G" transforms the syrupy sweetness of '50s ballads into a monologue about a relationship's shortcomings. "Madeline"'s shimmery indie bossa-nova and the countrified ballad "Tears Are in Your Eyes" showcase Georgia Hubley's buttery, empathetic voice; her singing makes these vignettes universal as well as personal. Like mature indie rock records such as Pavement's Terr...

Yo La Tengo - Fakebook
2006-12-03 10:27:01 The most consistently accessible of Yo La Tengo’s releases, ‘Fakebook’ is a decidedly user-friendly set of mostly cover songs, but since the songs are well off the beaten track, they will likely be unfamiliar to people without voluminous record collections. While the band is all about extremes–alternating between gentle strumming and folksy harmonies to all-out [...]

Spoon, Ono, Sleater-Kinney, Yo La Tengo in Hedwig Doc
1970-01-01 00:59:00 Plus: Breeders, Frank Black, Rufus Wainwright, Polyphonic Spree, Jonathan Richman First came Hedwig and the Angry Inch the stage musical, then came Hedwig and the Angry Inch the movie spectacle, and soon after arrived the Hedwig covers album, Wig in a Box, boasting an impressive array of indie giants-- including Sleater-Kinney, Spoon, Frank Black, Yo La Tengo, and the Breeders-- putting their own characteristic touches on tunes from the musical. Now comes-- brace for it-- the documentary on the making of the charity covers album. But wait, this actually looks super rad. Follow My Voice With the Music of Hedwig hits DVD shelves August 7, courtesy of Wolfe Video. It includes the Katherine Linton-directed, Rainlake Productions/Sundance Channel-produced 2006 feature that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and aired on the Sundance Channel that year.Wig in a Box was orchestrated by Chris Slusarenko of Guided by Voices and the Takeovers, and was released on Off Records in 2003.
