For many survivors, the information detailed in the web casts may be known already but they're worth watching, I think, as a helpful reminder of some of the important issues that some of us may have had to deal with already or may face in the future. New Young Adult Novel. . THE TRUTH: I?m a Girl, I?m Smart and I Know Every
2008-01-24 18:15:00
THE TRUTH … how do we carry the truth from girlhood to adulthood? That priceless ?truth? that we all recognize as kids? How do we walk over that bridge into growing up, carrying the Truth? How do we not hide it? How do we not forget what it is? How do we recognize THE TRUTH in our children and help them carry their most precious selves into adulthood? The Truth: I’m a Girl, I’m Smart and I Know Everything is a delightful, humorous secret diary, written by a girl who is 10-11 years of age. She is wise and yet so innocent. She makes us cry and laugh and remember ourselves. Behind this very easy read is the psychological message to the women reading THE TRUTH that they can and must recapture the fire and passion of their girlhoods not only for themselves to flourish and be happy, but for the next generation to also have the gifts of good emotional and spiritual health. ?This wonderful story is about a girl on the cusp of puberty, as spoken in her own voice. She is ch...

AFTER MIDNIGHTbyDorlana VannPart ITanner and Yulia Chapter 1He slouched on his old bed in his new room staring at all the taped-up cardboard boxes that surrounded him. He hadn’t opened one. Moving so often when he had been in elementary and junior high hadn’t been so terrible, but now everyone already had their clique. In the morning he would be shoved into a done society, and have to learn who to avoid, who to be friends with, and actually who Tanner Dobbs would be. If his family would have moved at the beginning of the school year, fitting in probably would have been a minor challenge, but no, school had started a month before. “She hates me,” Tanner muttered to himself. He managed to drag himself up and off his bed but only made it to his window. He half-mindedly looked down at his new lawn, new street, and new neighborhood, trying not to let his true concern surface. Worrying about the move only temporarily eased the stress that his family had split apart. His dad had d...

News & Current Events :: Young Adults Aren't Sticking with Church
2007-08-09 04:57:00
Author: Eric Subject: Young Adults Aren't Sticking with ChurchPosted: Wed Aug 08, 2007 10:57 pm (GMT -4) Young Adults Aren't Sticking with Church Cathy Lynn Grossman Protestant churches are losing young adults in "sobering" numbers, a survey finds. Seven in 10 Protestants ages 18 to 30 both evangelical and mainline who went to church regularly in high school said they quit attending by age 23, according to the survey by LifeWay Research. And 34% of those said they had not returned, even sporadically, by age 30. That means about one in four Protestant young people have left the church. "This is sobering news that the church needs to change the way it does ministry," says Ed Stetzer, director of Nashville-based LifeWay Research, which is affiliated with the publishing arm of the Southern Baptist Convention. "It seems the teen years are like a free trial on a product. By 18, when it's their choice whether to buy in to church life, many d...

Author: Eric Subject: Study Sees Turnaround in Young Adult Position on AbortionPosted: Tue Jul 10, 2007 8:31 am (GMT -4) Study Sees 'Turnaround' in Young Adults' Positions on Abortion Kevin Mooney (CNSNews.com) - Younger voters, especially women, are embracing a pro-life position in surprising numbers and in sharp contrast to attitudes that held sway 15 years ago, according to a new study. The study by Overbrook Research, a public consulting firm in Illinois, examines public opinion data from Missouri. With proportions of blacks, Catholics and union members in line with national averages, the state is viewed as "highly representative of the American electorate," the study says. Over 30,000 survey interviews were conducted in the state between 1992 and 2006. Participants were asked: "On the debate over abortion policy, do you consider yourself to be pro-life, pro-choice or somewhere in between?" Those who gave a definitive answer were then asked how ...

Young Adults: First Credit Card
2007-05-16 05:00:00
Hi,When young adults apply for their first credit card, they need to be aware of hidden costs and fees, interest rate fluctuations, and the minimum payment trap. If ever it's the time to read the small fine print on the back of forms, applying for a credit card is when to do it. No one should feel embarrassed if he or she does not understand all the verbiage on the back of one of those forms. It's important to ask someone who does understand to explain all the terms and conditions to the prospective card holder. Here is a list of some of the items typically included in the small print:1) If payment is late, by even one day, the interest rate may rise to the maximum allowed by state law in which the card is issued. For example, if the card is offered at 6% and the payment is one day late, the credit card holder reserves the right to reserve the interest rate to 19.9%+. 2) Most credit cards assess a $35.00 additional fee for any payment that is late.3) If the credit limit is exceede...

Boys' Books vs. Chick Lit in the Young Adult Section
2007-04-04 06:00:00
In the ongoing search for boy-friendly literature, I offer up the rants and reviews from this article on book recommendations for young men.  I should stress that I haven't read any of the books reviewed, so I can't give you my own assessment of them, but I'll credit the author with giving enough detail to help the reader decide if the works are interesting and appropriate.  (I have read other works by Robert Parker, most famous for his Spencer detective series, who has taken up young adult literature, and can say that I found his books generally interesting and well-written, if not overly memorable.) I do agree with the author that the more recent offerings for young male readers do not even come close to the books churned out for young women.  Sometimes it seems as though the young adult selections consist of nothing but girl-empowerment and female coming-of-age novels.  Then again, classic childrens literature is full of great boy-friendly fare, from ...
