Yuri Manga: Linkage
2009-09-09 18:00:00
"Do you remember, the moment your love first began?" Thus begins Linkage, the collection of Yuri Hime stories by Kurata Uso. These stories are linked only by their exploration of that one moment, when two people realize that they share the same feelings as one another. Two office workers who misunderstand their importance to one another, a young flutist and the woman who loves her, a rebellious schoolgirl who falls for a blind girl, two sisters who have always been close, and an AI researcher and her creation. None of these really has any 'link' to one another. The links are forged between the women in the relationships, and between them and us as we watch their love blossom into something real. There's little here that stands above and beyond the Typical "Story A," really, except that that characters are well drawn and well conceived. Despite the fact that only one of them even acknowledges the difficulty of the admission of loving another woman, these stories are pretty dar...
Yuri Manga: Ame-iro Kouchakan Kandan, Volume 1
2009-08-31 21:25:00
At last.In a small, friendly town, down at the end of the main street, in a spot just by the edge of the park, is a shop where you can sit and relax and have a cup of excellent tea. It's called the Ame-iro Kouchakan Kandan, The Amber Teahouse. This volume tells the story of this store and the people who make it so wonderful. The store owner is Seriho, a sweet, somewhat helpless woman. Luckily for her, she is assisted in the day-to-day operations of the shop by one very intelligent young lady, Sarasa. Sarasa, it is soon apparent, has a second agenda. It is not just the tea shop she loves, but the tea shop's owner. This first collected volume follows Sarasa and Seriho as they wrangle with the complexities of running the tea shop and with their feelings for each other. The story of how they met, originally told in the second [es] Eternal Sisters anthology is gathered here, as is the fateful story in which Sarasa and her friends forever change the destiny of the Amber Teahouse with a Ta...
Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime, Volume 17 (Part 2)
2009-08-24 21:00:00
The second half of Volume 17 of Yuri Hime (???????) starts off with another very doujinshi-style story. Which makes me wonder...why do I think of them this way? Probably because i first encountered them when I began collecting original Yuri doujinshi. These stories that I think of as doujinshi stories are almost always high school settings, almost always kind of imperfect, good-but-amateur-ish art and almost always about those first steps to admitting that the characters are in love. They end with the moment that both characters acknowledge that they feel the same way about one another. Rarely do they go much further than that, but I do tend to like it when the stories do. Kimochi no Katachi (originally published as the Tact series) by Sakuraike was one of those series, Volume 1 and Volume 2, but then spent more time looking back before Satsuki met Kino than forward. In any case, in "Watashi no Kawaii Hito" Ika met and Sempai a while ago and, after Sempai confessed to her, they've b...
Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime, Volume 17 (Part 1)
2009-08-23 23:29:00
Welcome to Volume 17 of Yuri Hime (???????), which was both very good and very bad - sometimes at the same time. The cover story, and new series by Eiki Eiki and Zaou Taisho is...really frustrating. It's the 22nd century, all the men are dead and women have, for some reason, reinvented hesterosexist society for themselves. Women are either "Adam"s who play the male role in a relationship or "Eve"s who are the female role. In effect, the entirety of human society has become Takarazuka. The protagonist of this story, Aoi, is an "Adam," attending an "Adam's" private school. The number one rule of this school is that Adams MAY NOT have relationships with one another - only with Eves. Not only is this ridiculous, it does something I am simply unhappy with - it turns this story into a BL/Yaoi story since it is *painfully* obvious that Sakura and Aoi will be the main couple here. I find this vexing. Severely vexing. Frankly, it just pisses me right off. I have nothing against BL. I unders...
Yuri Drama CD: Ame-iro Kouchakan Kandan ~ White Engage
2009-08-06 01:44:00
It has been previously established that the Ame-iro Kouchakan rates very high on the 'ole Yuri-o-meter. In fact, it seems to draw female couples like bees to lilies and yes, I'm mixing my metaphors, thank you.So, it will come as no surprise that Mana-chan-sensei from the earlier mini DCD, "Pink Princess" has taken to doing her work at the Amber Teahouse. The Yuri atmosphere is perfect for her to get in the St. Lotecia groove. She loves watching Seriho and Sarasa dance around each other, She loves to love/hate her devoted editor Shiko and she just loves Yuri. And so we find ourselves in "White Engage," the Drama CD that comes with the deluxe edition of Ame-iro Kouchakan Kandan, Volume 1.The conflict here is small. And predictable. A sudden wrench is thrown in Mana-chan's and Shiko's working relationship that causes a crisis between them. Seriho and Sarasa are able to help the two of them work it out. They do work it out, rather creatively, I thought. And with a wonderfully voice ...
Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime S, Volume 9
2009-08-04 22:24:00
Yuri Hime S, Volume 9 (???????S (??)) is...Yuri Hime S. I keep wanting to like it, I really do. And mostly I kind of sort of enjoy it. But it is not for me and I am reminded repeatedly of the fact as I face chapter after chapter of stories like "Yuru Yuri," "Love Cubic," "Minus Literacy," "Cassiopeia Dolce" and the new series "Konohana Teikitan." They are simply not for me. Like or not like is beside the point. I'm the older sister reading a younger brother's Yuri and just not feeling it.It's not even that the golden allure of schoolgirls' thighs are nothing to me, it's just that there's nothing *happening* in these stories, because the fetishism fills the pages so full with cat/wolf/elf ears and bathing suits and underwear that the characters don't have any time to develop. Take "Shingami Arisu," a story that had a pretty bloody opening in which our protagonists meet over a murder. Well, in this next chapter...our protagonists meet over a murder. It was pretty much the same ...
Yuri Manga: Butterfly 69
2009-07-21 01:13:00
Butterfly 69 is everything that is good and right about Yuri manga. It makes me happy to be a manga reader.Right from the first panel of the first story that ever appeared in Yuri Hime, I found Natsuneko's art appealing. It has vibrancy, an energy that lacks in most manga these days. It's not just that there's action and energy depicted. The characters feel lively and real - even when the situations are ridiculous and unreal. Which they mostly are. :-)In "Butterfly 69," the title story and one of my two favorites, we are introduced to Maria, the mixed-race singer of Butterfly 69 and Ageha, the prim and proper President of the Student Council at the elite music school Maria attends. Maria is an affront to everyone and everything at the school, with her crazy clothes and earrings and wild not-really Japanese self. Unbeknownst to the student body and staff, Maria and Ageha are engaged in a passionate love affair. Maria is given the opportunity to make it big overseas, but will have ...
Yuri Manga: Itoshi wo Tome (Volume 1)
2009-07-08 21:00:00
Set in the Heian period, Itoshi wo Tome ~ Kimi ga Kokoko ha ~ (?????~??????~) is a story about noblewomen Tachibana and Sakura, whose older sister had been a lady of the Emperor's palace, but had died. Sakura is living with Tachibana's family as a courtesy. Tachibana falls in love with Sakura's tearful face early on but as much as they wish it, their story is not as simple as "Happily ever after." First, Tachibana is betrothed to the stupidest, most cheerful doofus ever. His words are decorated with ASCII art just to give you an idea of his depth and intelligence. When he discovers Tachibana and Sakura locked together in an embrace, Sakura is able to convince him to be their friend and ally. But a far, far worse threat is around the corner. Tachibana remains engaged to her doofus, knowing he won't press the issue - but when Sakura is called up by the Emperor to be one of his women, there is no escape. Tachibana wails that as a woman she is powerless, but then comes to the surpris...
Yuri Manga: Comic Yuri Hime, Volume 16 (Part 2)
2009-06-05 19:18:00
The second half of The Comic Yuri Hime, Volum 16 starts off with what I consider to be an interesting turn of events. In "Honey Mustard" Morishima Akiko details a silly little story of two careerwomen, Kaori and Mitsuki. Some years ago they were lovers, but are now good friends - then rivals, as they fall for the ubercute server at the window of what we used to call in college a "grease truck." Mai finds both women attractive in their own way, but her coworker, Chiho is less enthusiastic because she is, quite clearly jealous. The story itself is cute. It's nice to see more adult characters, but that is not particularly what interested me. What interested me was something Chiho said. In response to Mai's comment about how attractive both Kaori and Mitsuki were, Chiho says "My gut tells me that those two aren't like us." In fact, she uses a phrase "Kocchi no Ke." I'm not sure I'm going to be able to explain this right, so my apologies if I cock this up but in this sense "ke" is a...
Yuri Manga: Comic Yuri Hime, Volume 16 (Part 1)
2009-06-04 21:01:00
The 16th Volume of Comic Yuri Hime starts off with a big "Ame-iro Kouchakan Kandan" presence. Sarasa, Seriho and two new characters, Mana-chan and Shiko, adorn the cover. Inside the cover is the "Pink Princess" Drama CD in which we are introduced to Manako and Shiko. This is followed by something I do not particularly care for. There is a thing that Japanese seiyuu do, to play with the images of their characters and as a form of service, where they pose or imply Yuri between them and the other actress(es) who voice characters in the same show/CD. It's pretty popular among fans, there's even blogs that track this fake lesbian coupling among seiyuu...but it really kinda squicks me. They aren't a couple, and they don't look like they even want to touch each other. It strikes me as icky, not cute. Nonetheless, those kinds of pictures accompany completely banal interviews with the voice actresses of "Pink Princess," and more ads for the delayed first volume of Ame-iro Kouchakan Kandan...
Yuri Drama CD: Ame-iro Kouchakan Kandan ~ Pink Princess
2009-05-30 02:15:00
Ame-iro Kouchakan Kandan Drama CD: Pink Princess is the Drama CD that came with the most recent volume of Comic Yuri Hime as a bonus. It's meant to be a little taste of things to come for the ladies of the Ame-iro Kouchakan and, as a result, I had very reasonable expectations for plot, characters, running time, etc. The CD blew me away on everything but plot. It wasn't that the plot was bad - it was that there is, in fact, very little plot possible when the entire story is a bunch of people talking about tea. :-)The Ameiro Kouchakan has been developing a reputation, it seems, and two new customers have wandered in because of mysterious rumors about the place. It turns out that the newcomers are Saotome Manako-sensei, the author of the St. Lotecia books (first introduced in "Otome-iro Stay Tuned" from Yuri Hime S and her number one super fan and new editor Shiko. Mana-chan-sensei wants something to bring excitement and happiness to a girl's heart, so Sarasa creates an disgusting ...
Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime Wildrose, Volume 3
2009-05-29 04:10:00
Let's get the most damning thing about Yuri Hime Wildrose, Volume 3 out of the way right up front. When I picked it up today to review it, I couldn't remember a single story in it, although I had only re(!)read it a week ago. After I picked it up and flipped through the volume I remembered a few of the stories, but having set it down again more than ten minutes ago, they are already slipping from my mind. This is not a good thing. But that aside, it's a fine addition the the Wildrose series.Mistukuni Hachime, of Gokujou Drops fame, brings it on with "Netemo Sametemo," which seems just about the most straight-on schoolgirl item in the book. "Closet Daisakusen' started off with action and I thought, "woo-hoo, we're gonna get us some girls with guns," but no, it was a peeping tom/sex in the closet story.Nanzaki Iku, aka Doropanda Tours, brings in entirely new, yet completely identical ShizNat stand-ins for more semi-public sex and a mild plot complication.Amano Shuninta's "Sweet ...

Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime S, Volume 8
2009-05-13 22:55:00
It's been two full years of Yuri Hime S now and, as I sit here re-reading this volume, I find that it is definitely showing signs of maturity. Relative maturity, at least. The propensity for the stories to include the most typical forms of service hasn't gone away. We are still subjected to swarms of girls in uniforms, maid outfits, bloomers (long gone in the real world, but unfortunately lodged firmly in the minds of LFBs) and of course, an obsession with bathing. Before I continue this review, I want to share an experience I recently had. My wife was researching something quite specific and I offered to help. We found ourselves paging through National Geographic magazine from the early half of the last century. I have heard many times about boys in the 40s, 50s and 60s who used these magazines to feed their desire for pictures of naked women. Well...if those pictures were what fueled your fantasies I can only feel very, very bad for you. :-) (My wife reminds me to mention that we...

Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime 12, Part 2
2008-05-23 01:51:00
Onward into the dark depths of Yuri Hime Volume 12!"Tokimeki Mononoke Gakuen" continues from the moment after Kiri and Arare have kissed. Arare is flipping out - not because she didn't like it, but because she did! Immediately, she wonders just how Kiri got to be that good a kisser and freaks as she imagines her practicing with just about everyone. Arare wakes up in bed, assuming it was just a weird dream, but in a series of fabulous visuals, finds herself becoming insanely, irrationally jealous of Kiri and Pero. Arare and Kiri make up, Arare wondering if they should become lovers, when Kiri drops the bomb - if they do, Arare will become a real Youkai. Finally! A reasonable reason for the inevitable not getting together! What will happen? Tune in in July.In "Sweet Peach" Touka flashes back and forth between what appears to be a "normal" world and the world she's actually stuck in, with a floating perverted hamster-girl as a companion. Airei and Chun, the warrior-elf and the maid-d...
Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime, Volume 12 Part 1
2008-05-21 19:11:00
Like a bag of mixed candy, Yuri Hime Volume 12 provides some tasty treats and some flavors that maybe one doesn't like quite so much. lolWe begin with Goth-Loli story "Epitaph." When it first began, I was witholding my judgement. Now a whole volume into it, I'm finally comfortable saying that I find it to be flavorless. It reminds me of Venus Versus Virus in the way it wraps an episodic and not particularly engaging plot around a not-particularly engaging not-quite couple. Towa and Ash are, well...boring. This chapter introduces the traditional rival couple, who are, as tradition demands just slightly more of a couple than our primary couple. There is a threat, which is dealt with by the also slightly more competent other couple and all of it makes Ash question her not-quite relationship with Towa.Set in the Meiji period, and told through a series of letters, a girl's rival is also her not very secret admirer, in the short "Sakura Buntsu." "Clover" follows the uncomfortable trian...
Yuri Manga: Comic Yuri Hime S, Volume 2
2007-11-13 17:26:00
I admit it - I'm reviewing in size order, largest to smallest. My parents are coming at the end of the week and I'm trying to get the piles down to a size my father can watch the TV over. No joke.Today, I'm going to tackle the second largest object in the pile, Comic Yuri Hime S, Volume 2. :-)Just as a reminder, CYHS is the brother compilation to Yuri Hime, in which artists who are well known for drawing highly servicey, moe and/or fetishy Yuri for a male readers are drawing Yuri for a more mixed audience. My opinion of this magazine remains the same - it's not as bad as I feared, but it's not as good as I hoped. The "moe" part of the fandom means that many of the characters seem waaaaaaaayyyyy ootsy-cutesy or baby faced and I just will never, ever find that appealing. Sorry. If you do, then you will like this magazine better than I do.The magazine begins with a few color pages on the recent Blue Drop anime, once again mirroring our conversations on the Yuricon Mailing List. The...
Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime, Volume 10
2007-11-12 21:15:00
Yuri Hime, Volume 10 comes in at a bulky 400 pages. Wow. Despite that, I'm going to try and review it in one post, because I have a gigantic backlog of things to review and only a week before I go away and don't care for a while. So, let's see if I can keep the story synopses short and sweet. (But not alliterative, because that would be annoying.)To begin with, this volume comes with a lovely clear file with the cover picture of Seriho and Sarasa (in tie, notably designed by Alice Quartet. AQ is another Fujieda series about five clothing designers. Yes, five.) Very nice. The volume starts out with "Clover" the beginning of a new series by Hiyori Otsu; a tale of four sisters, a transfer student, an embarrassing situation and whimsical desire to ride on the luggage rack of a subway car. Thumbs up as always from me for Otsu's art and characters."Arcadia" is a story of love between Yui-chan, a typical schoolgirl and Nanako, a wandering spirit that loves her. There was nothing particu...
Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime, Volume 9 - Part 2
2007-08-19 20:38:00
The second half of Yuri Hime, Volume 9 brings back the incredibly weird and wonderful "Tokimeki Mononoke Gakuen," with a splash page that is so horrible and distressing that it makes me laugh every time I look at it. It's hot, Arare, Kiri and Pero comment, because, duh, it's summer. But that also means it's time for the summer sea to arrive here at the school for supernatural creature girls! Arare has no idea what that means, but when Pero takes her to look out the window, instead of a forbidding winter sea crashing against the rocks below the school, there's a veritable tropical paradise. The rest of the chapter is taken up by Arare's trials as she keeps ripping bikini bottoms in an attempt to hide the proof of her humanity, her belly button. It's all goofy and creepy fun here at Monster High. Mori Natsuko's "Yuri Doujou" advice column takes a look at the continuing stories of some of the folks who wrote in for advice previously. It's all pretty banal, but heck, love proble...

Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime, Volume 9 - Part 1
2007-08-18 15:38:00
Yuri Hime, Volume 9, starts off with a not horrible poster by Sakura Kinoshita of - I know you'll be shocked - school girls. (I say "not horrible" because with *every* issue of Dengeki Daioh magazine, I open the book, look at the posters, cringe, then vow to burn them. It's made me wary of those first-page posters.) We move right into a new manga based (probably pretty loosely) upon a new game by the same folks that brought the world the lily-scented vampire game Aka Ito. "Aoi Shiro" follows Akita Momoko as she enters the girls' private school that she has aspired to. When she enters her room, she finds a girl sitting there, looking pale and tragic. After a short time, Momoko decided that she likes her roommate, Aizawa Yasumi, and thinks that she'd like to see the serious girl smile. The two become closer, mostly due to Momoko's irrrepressable good nature. Momo gets "Zawachi" to smile eventually. Ultimately, Yasumi confides in her. When end of term comes, and Yasumi admits her ...

Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime "S", Part 2
2007-07-03 21:49:00
The second half of Yuri Hime "S" is as variable as the first. What was good was really pretty good, and what was bad was exhaustingly tedious."Interface" by Kurogane Kenn (Shoujo Sect) was unexpected in every conceivable way. The story begins with a girl walking in on another girl drawing a stick figure on the chalkboard in a classroom. When the first girl asks "who is it?" the second replies, "There's no one inside." But she touches it with a blown glass heart pendant then says that the pendant is her. (Not "hers" - "her.") She gives the first girl the pendant, then runs off and quite literally disappears. The girl (who remains nameless throughout) tries to find the girl who gave her the pendant, but is unsuccessful. She's directed towards Kitamoto-sensei, who runs the handicrafts club, in which they might have blown glass. But Kitamoto-sensei is not only unhelpful, she's downright rude. The girl says that she'll come back later and ask, but the teacher just says that she's no...
Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime "S", Part 1
2007-07-02 21:31:00
It was with a large measure of trepidation that I picked up my copy of the first issue of Yuri Hime "S". Based on the names of the artists alone, it seemed that the woman-centric focus of Yuri Hime was being tossed to the wind in favor of the (admittedly larger and more lucrative) Loser FanBoy audience. I feared that the inagural issue would be filled with the usual crap that we're (that is, women) forced to endure when the audience is guys. You know what I mean; oversized breasts in bras that offer no, or unrealistic, support, grotesque bodies, underage girls and those ever-present panty shots. My expectation was that the original mission - "Let's do a Yuri mangazine with stories geared towards a female audience" had been changed to that of a "Let's do a Yuri magazine with stories geared towards a male audience."Having read through the first volume once, I'm pleased to report that it seems much more like the prevailing thought was "Let's have artists known for drawing Yuri for...
Seven Seas licenses Yuri Manga "Hatsukoi Shimai" and "Voiceful"

Anime Expo opened this weekend and Seven Seas was right out of the gate with a bunch of new announcements, including Yuri manga titles Voiceful and First Love Sisters (known here as Hatuskoi Shimai) from Ichijinsha.I'm very pleased that 7S picked up these titles, I feel confident that they will do the very best job that can be done on the translation and adaptation. For those who are interested in these titles, here are my reviews of the collected series:Hatsukoi Shimai 1 and Hatsukoi Shimai 2VoicefulNow that they've picked up Ichijinsha titles, hopefully we can look forward to Strawberry Shake Sweet, Simoun and "Kotonoha no Miko to Kotodama no Majyo to in the future, along with the rest of the Yuri Shimai/Yuri Hime line up. :-)Congrats Seven Seas - Yuri fandom is looking forward to the translations. :-)

Jumping right in for today's review...After "Creo the Crimson Crises" comes the latest from Takahashi Mako. Apparently I wasn't the only one who didn't like the creepy kids in her stories, because her characters have now morphed into creepy teenagers instead. :-) The story begins with two girls meeting, seemingly by chance under a picturesque sakura tree. But there was less chance than originally appears. In fact, one of the girls is now going out with the boy that likes the other girl - and who she likes. This girl (we'll call her "the blonde" and the other "the brunette") starts to obsess about the girl her boyfriend liked, asking him questions about her. But it was, and Paku Romi played Touko-sensei with a sexy voice and that, as they say, was that. :-)Volume 2 of Hatsukoi Shimai is a collection of chapters that ran in Yuri Hime magazine. The story picks up shortly after the end of Volume 1. Cute, cheerful Mastusato Chika is pleased as punch to have built a relationship with the object of her admiration and desire, Kizaki Haruna, and a friendship with Haruna's little sister, Akiho.Chika and Akiho are walking to school one day, when they come across a hullaballoo over a young, attractive woman who has apparently just pulled up on a motorcycle. The visitor asks for directions to the staff room, but the crowd around her threatens to knock over her bike and Akiho jumps to help her keep it upright. In the most inappropriately intimate way possible, the visitor asks Akiho to lead the way. Akiho, annoyed at the wo...

We left off from Part 1 after the essays about classic yuri series, this time, about two wonderful gender-bendy girl prince stories, Paros no Ken, Sword of Paros and Berusaiyu no Bara, Rose of Versailles. This essay is followed by another new one-shot, "Pajama Yoru Hanashi", about a bunch of girls at a pajama party. One confesses to liking someone. Under cover of the usual squeals and fuss,
