Yuri Anime: Shattered Angels, Volume 1 (English)

Shattered Angels (originally known as Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora) is a story that takes place in the land of Academia - a small country with an abundance of schools, and therefore students (but no teachers, I can't help but notice.)In this world there is a girl, Kuu, whose name means "empty" and indeed, she appears to lack mostly everything except incredulity and a childhood dream of a Prince. When Ayanokoji Kyoshiro arrives at the school, dressed in the school uniform of the one school that has been destroyed completely Kuu, like everyone else, is wowed by his princely-ness. So when he grabs her shirt and rips it open, she's pretty aghast. Of course this being a Kaishaku story, she forgets to stay upset - and all the other girls in the school likewise have no frontal lobes - so when Kyoshiro asks Kuu to come with him, she does.Immediately she finds herself the center of a battle for...herself. It's not uncommon to run across this comment in anime forums in any language, referring to any anime - "It gets better in later episodes." Whether it's correct or not is entirely dependent upon whether you *like* whatever literary theme that particular anime is abusing, of course. lolIf you have been reading my reviews of Simoun here, you will know that I thought it was pretty breathtaking right out of the gate, but indeed, it also gets better in later episodes. I know that there are many fans of the series who consider Volume 4 to be the pinnacle of achievement.However...I have a dilemma. While there's no huge news this week, there's a *lot* of Yuri-related news this week, so here we go!Yuri MangaSo, Seven Seas says that their Yuri line is fine, but many fans are frustrated and angry about their inability to *find* them. Even I have run into this. I've got some insight into the issue, but it is a very complex situation, so I'm going to write more about the publishing/distribution/buying- cycle and its accompanying array of dizzying difficulties tomorrow. In the meantime, I'd like to hear from Seven Seas what they suggest for fans trying to find a copy of some of their earlier Strawberry titles?Yuri Hime Volume 13 goes on sale next Saturday, as does YH Comics collections, Yuri Hime Wildrose 2, Tokimeki Mononoke Gakuen 1 (yay!) and Creo the Crimson Crisis 1, which I will be skipping. Yuri fans hit paydirt with Volume 3 of Kaleido Star, in which Layla suddenly comes to the conclusion that Sora is her important partner. (Finally!) And we get to spend moments here and there noticing that Anna is acutally quite hunky and cool and that Mia is besotted, although more of that will come later. lolWe start the volume with a little time wallowing in Anna's backstory, then we spend not nearly enough time as Layla and Sora bond over their "Amazingly Hot New Production" (the amusing title of the episode) - in which they star as pirates fighting in a storm, while the ship/swing bursts into flame below them. Seriously, if you do not want to see *that* you are clearly beyond help.To cap off the volume, we get a painful episode where we learn that Carlos is in love with Sara, even though he treats her like crap (ah, beautiful Japanese-style heterosexual love.) So, maybe you're sitting around watching some of your older anime and thinking, "Gee, I really like Excel Saga, but I wish it had more mindless Yuri and made less sense." Well, lucky for you, there's Puni Puni Poemy (aka Puni Puni Poemi). I get PPP. I really do. Because there have been days after I finished writing a really intense story or completed a series and I've lost my mind, too. You can't really stop it - it's like an allergic reaction. You need to get rid of the toxins somehow. Obviously, while I was at AnimeNEXT last week, some stuff happened. :-)Yuri MangaTop story is that Media Blasters has licensed and is working on Maka Maka, in glorious full color, with the internal extras. (No dolls, though. I asked about the dolls and they didn't know what I meant. Oh well, still no Jun and Nene dolls for me. Boo hoo. Unlike Right Stuf, Media Blasters folks don't really get the fans' (my) interest in physcal extras. Too expensive, no one cares, was the basic feedback I got. I think they are totally wrong about that, so if you happen to be talking to them at a con, tell them that you like the physical extras - postcards, dolls, phone straps, etc, too!) While everyone else in the mangaverse is talking about the July issue of Morning 2 magazine because of the wonderful new manga series by American artist Felipe Smith, *I* want to talk to you about Morning 2 because of the story that's the main contender for best Yuri Manga of 2008, Gunjou.This manga is so awesomely dysfunctional that it makes me want to dance around in joy every time I get a new chapter. :-D Chapter 7 was complete and total win. This is likely to be the last time I write about this series. Anime is over, been licensed, been reviewed. Manga has been reviewed - twice. Once in English, once in Japanese. This is the final volume. To my surprise, I'm a little saddened by that.When I first began to read this series, I witheld my affection, sure that it would be a common harem drama with no resolution and that Hazumu would surely revert to being a boy. The "end," I predicted, would be the beginning all over again for an unresolvable triangle.How nice that I was so wrong about that, huh? :-)So, we arrive at last at Kashimashi~ Girl Meets Girl, Volume 5, and find ourselves watching Hazumu struggle with the same exact conundrum she's struggled with for the last two volumes. Yuri AnimeI spoke to Right Stuff this week, about Maria-sama ga Miteru and the second subtitle track. They basically said that they know that the audience for Marimite is pre-existing, with high expectations, and not off-the-street 12-year olds in Best Buy. They told me that they actually got emails that said that if they left out the honorifics, that the writer would not be buying it, which didn't surprise me in the least. It was refreshing to speak to a company that gets fandom, really. The media rep assured me that they really want to do the best possible job for the fans, and I believe her. After our conversation, I'm completely convinced that they *get* it.The other thing I asked, which I was fairly certain I would not get an answer for was - how are sales going? I knew they wouldn't tell me numbers, but was it 100 units or 1000? This is what I got in reply - "We were very, very, *very* pleased with sales." You know those moments? When you're watching a really good anime and all of a sudden you think, "Crichey, this anime is stellar."Volume 3 of Simoun is when an excellent series becomes stellar.I took 4 pages of notes about things I wanted to mention, but I realized that if I mention any of them, I will simply be spoiling things. So I really can't talk about what happens in Volume 3, except to say that *everything* changes in this volume. Episode 13 is particularly key, there are so many details; so many little, extremely subtle touches that it would be impossible to notice them all, but when taken together make a piece of anime that is absolutely stunning. Now I remember why I said this was the best series of the year - because it was! Like a bag of mixed candy, Yuri Hime Volume 12 provides some tasty treats and some flavors that maybe one doesn't like quite so much. lolWe begin with Goth-Loli story "Epitaph." When it first began, I was witholding my judgement. Now a whole volume into it, I'm finally comfortable saying that I find it to be flavorless. It reminds me of Venus Versus Virus in the way it wraps an episodic and not particularly engaging plot around a not-particularly engaging not-quite couple. Towa and Ash are, well...boring. This chapter introduces the traditional rival couple, who are, as tradition demands just slightly more of a couple than our primary couple. There is a threat, which is dealt with by the also slightly more competent other couple and all of it makes Ash question her not-quite relationship with Towa.Set in the Meiji period, and told through a series of letters, a girl's rival is also her not very secret admirer, in the short "Sakura Buntsu." A-chan, her older brother, Fumi, Kyouko and two school friends are headed out to the country for a vacation at Kyouko's family's summer house in Aoi Hana, Volume 3.We meet Kyouko's cousin, who is also her fiancee', and her aunt who is very nice and her mother who is not. Kyouko's cousin and A-chan's brother have a chat over golf, where he admits to actually liking Kyouko, but knows that it's pretty useless. The girls all walk through the woods. Yuri AnimeTop story this week is the news ought of Right Stuf/Nozomi Entertainment that the DVD release of Maria-sama ga Miteru Season 1 will have have two subtitle tracks, one of which will include the honorifics. The original preview version has translated honorifics, so "Sachiko-sama" becomes "Lady Sachiko." I know that I'm not the only one who cringed at that. Interestingly, after Erin gave us the good news, I received an email from RS/N, informing me of the new track, and offer me a preview of episode one. Of course I'll report back asap. What a really fabulous series Noir is. It's been years - practically lifetimes in fandom years - since I first watched this series as it came out on Japanese TV. I enjoyed it just as much, maybe even a little more, this time as I did lo those many years ago when I first set eyes on Kirika and Mirielle.In Volume 7 of Noir, everything comes to a head. Kirika has left Mirielle behind and given herself over to the dark side of the Force. She's entered the alternative universe of Altena's Manor and, to Chloe's genuine joy and delight, has dedicated herself to being Noir.Chloe really blossoms in this volume and it still creeps me out. lolWhen Mirielle arrives, the sense that she's come to free Kirika from a spell is not as strong as the sense that she's arrived to allow Kirika to free herself. It's not often you're going to get such a unique mix of fun tidbits about translating, manga, military adventures and cute dachsund pictures - all written up in both Japanese and English, for your reading pleasure. Check it every day.And speaking of Ana's mad translation skills, today we're talking about Strawberry Panic, Volume 2, translated skillfully by mad Ana. (For a summation of both my frustration with the SP fandom and the plot, please check my review of the Japanese edition from December 2006.)Today, I'm just talking about the reproduction into English. I'll never get tired of telling you that Seven Seas does a very, very good job. Ana's translation captures the soap opera-like, over the top-ness, and the adaptation, by Lorelei Laird, allows the dialogue to speak for itself. Considering how absurdly melodramatic everything is, I think it would make a pretty great J-drama....

We've got so much news these days that, like any other news magazine, I'm separating them into Topics. Yuri Anime NewsWe start this week off with news that the Candy Boy ONA (Online Animation) was launched on Nicovideo. The first "full" 14-minute episode of two sisters in love, and another girl who admires one of them, was received with positive reviews by Yuri fandom at large.And while we're talking about the bulk of Yuri fandom, they'll be happy to know that the upcoming Shoujo Sect OVA is up for preorder on Amazon Japan. Because of the "adult" nature of the anime, it appears to be unavailable for shipping overseas (gee, why fellas?) but if you *really* want it, you can use a buyer and get it that way. Back in March, I reviewed a new non-moe Yuri manga series by Nakamura Ching, Gunjou. After I posted my review, Nakamura-san offered to send me a back issue of Morning 2 - the magazine in which Gunjou runs - which I of course accepted with great joy. And just yesterday, I received my copy of the current issue of Morning 2, to get the next chapter.I love this manga with all my love. It is not cute. It is not adorable. It it not moe. It *is* stunning. So, with my apologies to Nakamura-san for the hideous nicknames, I'd like to tell you all about the new bits.Chapter 3 covers a tale from BL and BN's high school days. The brunette, BN, is a champion runner, but wears a crappy pair of beat up cleats. I'm half-Japanese, half-Filipino, and was born and grown in Okinawa, Japan for most of my life. I went to University of Arizona for a few years, but never finished college, and enlisted in the Marine Corps instead. During my tour in Okinawa, I married a Japanese guy in JASDF (Japan Air Self Defense Force.) After I got out of the Marines, I stayed in Japan to work in US military bases as a US federal employee. Lots of yummy Yuri news this week!Top story today is that Japanese women's magazine Malika is running a manga about Yoshiya Nobuko, a lesbian writer of the early twentieth century - and someone that many people, including myself, consider the grandmother of Yuri. Here's a preview of the manga. Nobuko was, in her time, the wealthiest woman in Japan, as out a lesbian as one could be in the early and mid-20th century and a writer who not only created many of the tropes of "Yuri" but much of what we think of when we thinking of "Shoujo," as well. Her Hana Monogatari series was as well known to every Japanese woman for decades as Laura Ingall Wilders' Little House series was known in America. Just got back from the Brooklyn Museum of Art, where I spent some time in the Utagawa prints and the Murakami art exhibits and honestly - they were both fabulous. I got a load of good notes for my Ghost in the Shell: Innocence lecture on June 14th there, which I am now calling "Surrealism, Sexaroids and Innocence: Art Influencing Anime, Anime Influencing Art." If you can get to the museum and see the art exhibits, do. They are really wonderful. And I hope to see you on the 14th - the lecture and movie are free with a museum entry (suggested donation, so it's up to you, but the Murakami is a ticketed exhibit, which costs $10. Totally worth it too.)One thing I found fascinating was that in the Murakami exhibit, other than mentioning briefly that manga is comics and anime is animation, and despite repeated references to both manga and anime, if you do not know what either of these are, there was basically no attempt at explaining it to you.
