Zach Thomas is the Man
2008-02-26 16:24:00 Zach Thomas recently appeared on a Mike and Kevin’s talk radio show in Dallas and had the following to say regarding his decision to go to Dallas. Question: You were looking to join a SuperBowl contender, and the Patriots offered you a contract. Why didn’t you take their offer. Thomas: I played against New England ...

Zach Thomas update: Pats offer contract
2008-02-19 02:21:00 Well, one of our fears may come to fruition as Dolphin fans. Adam Schefter is reporting that the Patriots have offered Zach Thomas a contract. Negotiations between his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, and the Pats will continue. Thomas visited with New England today and is still scheduled to meet with the Saints tomorrow. Schefter does point out that the Jets, Bills, Broncos, Texans, and Cowboys all are interested in bringing Thomas in for a visit. What does this mean to the Dolphins? Nothing, except that cutting Zach might prove to come back and bite the Dolphins in the ass. You have to wonder if Thomas still might have more left in his tank than we all thought. After all, there's as many as 7 or 8 teams rumored to be interested in him. That does say something. But, again, the Dolphins deciding to cut Thomas is probably the best thing for this franchise at this point in time. But it's going to be painful to watch Thomas play in anot...

Final thoughts on release of Zach Thomas
2008-02-15 06:03:00 There's going to be a lot written and talked about this latest move. Already, we've seen a wide variety of emotions out of the fans upon hearing about the release of Zach Thomas. Really, though, what more can be said? Not much, but I throw out my 2 cents just for fun. Yesterday was a tough day for Dolphin fans, and with good reason. A 12 year relationship has just ended...and on Valentine's Day of all days. Ok, ok, so it wasn't that kind of relationship, though some might claim the kind of relationship fans have to players is just as strong and emotional. Zach Thomas was/is truly great, in every sense of the word. He was a great middle linebacker on the field. But he was an even better person off the field. Sure, we can talk about his play and his production all we want. We can talk about how he's a 7 time pro bowler, the most ever for a Dolphins player. We can chat about his 1,866 career tackles, which is more t...

OFFICIAL: Dolphins release Zach Thomas
2008-02-14 23:36:00 So it's now official, as you can see by the article on the Dolphins' official website. Zach Thomas is no longer a Miami Dolphin. Here's what Zach had to say in a statement: "I want to thank the entire organization, especially Mr. Huizenga, for making my 12 seasons with the Dolphins as memorable as they were. I also want to thank all the coaches and teammates that I've had during my career for helping me to grow both on and off the field. I have a tremendous appreciation and admiration not only for the Dolphins organization, but for the fans as well, for all of the support that they have given me. I can't thank Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland and the rest of Dolphins management enough for handling this situation in a first-class manner. I am healthy and look forward to playing in 2008, but will always consider myself a Miami Dolphin." And he'll always be a Miami Dolphin in the hearts and minds of every single Dolphins fan. Now onto the statement released by Jeff Ireland: ...

Farewell Zach Thomas: Paying tribute to a Dolphins Legend
2008-02-14 19:26:00 Jay Glazer of Foxsports.com is reporting that the Miami Dolphins will cut ties today with LB Zach Thomas. As a lifelong Dolphins fan, I am sad to see him go. In my era of fandom (from about 1984 to present), Thomas is in my opinion the second biggest Dolphins legend. In fact, the first jersey I ever purchased (with money from a summer job), was Dan Marino's. The second: a blue #54 that still hangs in my closet.Thomas embodies everything the Dolphins were in his time with the team: a tough, underrated competitor that gave it his all every play. Unfortunately, the Dolphins never could field a potent enough offense to take advantage of the great defenses we had led by Thomas and Jason Taylor.Thomas has said that he isn't ready to retire. While I wouldn't mind seeing him go out a winner on another team, the fan in me hopes that team isn't the New England Patriots.Whatever team Thomas signs with, if in fact he doesn't retire, I wish him the best. Thank you Zach Thomas for all you've...
**BREAKING NEWS: Dolphins to cut Zach Thomas**
2008-02-14 19:00:00 FOX Sports' Jay Glazer is reporting that the Dolphins are expected to cut Zach Thomas today. Here's part of the report: Miami has informed perennial Pro Bowl linebacker Zach Thomas they will release him Thursday, FOXSports.com has learned. Thomas, like the rest of the Dolphins, suffered through a miserable 2007 season. He suffered a concussion on the field and injuries in a car accident that limited his play... ...In the last couple of months, Thomas has told FOXSports.com he thought his release was imminent due to his salary. However, Thomas also said that he is not ready to hang up the cleats. If true, this move does save the Dolphins $5.65 million more in cap room. Some will now wonder where Zach will end up? Could he land in Miami at a smaller salary? Possibly, but I wouldn't bet on it. PFT believes he could wind up in New England. Ugh! **UPDATE #1**: I'm sitting here thinking about this rumor, which is likely 100% accurate (so don't kid yourself), and...

Report: Zach Thomas placed on IR
2007-12-04 23:20:00 Many figured this would be how it plays out, and according to the Miami Herald, it has happened. Zach Thomas has been placed on Injured Reserve, eding his 2007 season. Is it also the end of his career? That remains to be seen. The Dolphins have replaced Zach and Cameron Worrell, who was placed on IR due to a torn ACL, with practice squad players Julius Wilson (OT) and Kelvin Smith (LB), both rookies. **UPDATE**: Apparently, Zach didn't want to go on IR. Here's what he said: "I'm disappointed with the decision to place me on Injured Reserve. I expected to come back this season and still think I can. However, I respect the team's decision and look forward to playing next year." Also of note, the Dolphins waived Kerry Reed.

Zach Thomas ruled out for Sunday
2007-11-09 18:27:00 Despite participating in practice yesterday, Zach Thomas has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bills. Here's what Cam Cameron said about the situation: "It's kind of day-to-day and that's the way we approached it, and then we came to that conclusion and he will not practice today. Obviously, we'll go into this game just like we did going into London, with Channing Crowder and Derrick Pope and that crew. (Zach) had a good practice yesterday, but as we're finding out in these situations, one day isn't always indicative of the next day and we've kind of been through this and that's what we're learning. He was positive yesterday, he came in this morning and things were not quite the same and again that's the recommendation of our medical staff." That certainly sucks, as now Marshawn Lynch will likely have an easier time on the ground. Hopefully Channing Crowder can step up his game, something he hasn't been able to do when filling in for Zach. Lo...

Dolphin Nuggets: John Beck & Zach Thomas
2007-11-08 18:05:00 CLAYTON: ONLY A MATTER OF WEEKS UNTIL BECK There was a short little blurb in the blog of ESPN's John Clayton yesterday about John Beck. Here's what Clayton writes: Beck time: Another rookie who may make it on the field before Russell is John Beck of Miami. Cleo Lemon is starting, but the Dolphins second-round pick could play Sunday if Lemon struggles. Beck underwent a little bit of a mid-season slump in practices with the Dolphins but has rebounded and done much better recently. It's only a matter of weeks before Beck is given the chance to start, but he could be playing this week if Lemon gets off to a bad start. It's interesting that Clayton tells us Beck underwent "a little bit of a mid-season slump in practices." I say that because no other media outlet has reported such a thing. And considering the media is only able to watch about a half hour of practice, it makes me wonder where Clayton got this info from. Perhaps it comes from a Dolphins source wi...

Dolphin Nuggets: Zach Thomas hurt; Fins sign 4
2007-10-24 23:25:00 ZACH THOMAS MISSES PRACTICE And those who thought things couldn't get any worse were clearly mistaken. Zach Thomas missed practice on Wednesday and may not even make the trip to London. This is all due to complications stemming from the post-game car accident Thomas and his wife were in on Sunday. Cam Cameron says Thomas suffered whiplash, but some are actually hinting that he may have suffered yet another concussion. Now, that's just speculation at this point. What is known is that Thomas is in Pittsburgh visitng a specialist. I guess we'll know more in the coming days. However, this is certainly some crappy news. DOLPHINS SIGN 4 Incase you missed it, the Dolphins have signed 4 players. Two of them are heading to the practice squad while the other 2 are on the active roster. Lance Schulters, who we loved by Dolphin fans in 2005, has been signed at safety. Though he hasn't played at all for any team this year, he will b...

Injury Updates: Zach Thomas, Channing Crowder, and Donovin Darius
2007-10-05 22:48:00 The Palm Beach Post is reporting that both Zach Thomas and Channing Crowder will be gametime decisions on Sunday. Thomas participated in the walk-through today at practice with the first-team defense while Crowder did not. Also, safety Donovin Darius is likely to miss Sunday's game with a calf injury. If so, it's believed that Cameron Worrell will become the team's 5th starting safety this season. I guess the team really wasn't happy with Travis Daniels as a safety if they are willing to start Worrell, primarily a special teamer throughout his career. Once I get the official injury report for both teams, I'll be sure to post it.

Zach Thomas practices...but should he play?
2007-09-26 23:21:00 The Sun-Sentinel, as well as other sources, reported earlier today that Zach Thomas did participate in full pads in practice today. He did wear a helmet restrictor, which is a pad that prevents his head from jolting backwards upon making contact or hitting the ground. It's unknown at this time how much of practice Thomas participated in and whether or not he has been medically cleared to play on Sunday. But this raises another question. Should Zach Thomas play on Sunday even if he is medically cleared. Omar Kelly doesn't think so: I'm told Thomas is the type of guy who would try to play with a broken limb, or in the middle of a concussion (like he did against Dallas). But for the sake of his long term health I don't want Thomas on the field on Sunday, even if the team doctors clear him and the defense continues to look lost without him. Yes that means I'd rather the Dolphins go 0-4 than put the team's best defender on the field and gambling on a 15 perc...

Zach Thomas ruled out
2007-09-21 21:37:00 Cam Cameron today confirmed that Zach Thomas will not play on Sunday against the Jets. This means that Channing Crowder will move to the middle and Derrick Pope, who has played well in the past when fillin in for an injury, will take the spot vacated by Channing. Here's what Cameron said about Zach: "It'll kind of be going day-to-day. They got back the MRI and they didn't see anything on that. They do further tests and so forth, so it's ongoing, but he's been ruled out of this game." Hopefully this isn't too serious of a deal. From what we've been hearing, it doesn't seem like Zach will miss a long period of time. And this will be a good experience for Crowder, as he is the heir apparent to Thomas. Also, safety Donovin Darius has been ruled out as well. I'll pass along the full injury report once I receive it.

Zach Thomas could have concussion
2007-09-21 00:13:00 And the hits just keep on coming for Dolphin fans. The latest is that Zach Thomas may have a concussion and is undergoing tests. Thomas was reportedly lighheaded and had other symptoms following Sunday's game against Dallas. He has missed practice both yesterday and today. Yesterday, it was called a "migraine," but it clearly could be something more serious. "We've got some tests ongoing," Cameron said. "We think there is a chance he has a slight concussion." Thomas' status is unknown for Sunday, but Dolphin fans are already fearing the worst. The Miami Herald reports that Thomas has had "several concussions" in his career and another could begin to call into question the remainder of his career. But let's not panic yet. We all need to just wait and see what the test results show. If Thomas can't play on Sunday, Channing Crowder will likely move to Thomas' MIKE spot. I'd imagine Donnie Spragan would then get the start ...

Why Zach Thomas is a Hall of Famer
2007-07-03 07:04:00 In light of the recent article by Pete Prisco that has outraged many Dolphin fans, guest writer Travis Wingfield has written a piece this week that makes a case for Thomas as a Hall of Famer. Enjoy: One's image of a prototypical linebacker would include extraordinary physical gifts. You'd ask for good size with outstanding strength. You'd demand excellent speed, and most of all, explosiveness. Go ahead, take the work out warrior; I'll take the man with incredible instincts, a nose for the ball, a master of film study and preparation, and unthinkable desire. The latter is precisely how I would describe Miami Dolphins' middle linebacker Zach Thomas. Perhaps this is why he is often looked over many times when the discussion of the best linebackers in the NFL arises. Zach Thomas is living proof that to be great, a player doesn't have to be the biggest, strongest, or fastest, but can be the most smart and have the most desire. An enormous amount of credit has to be given to Jim...

Dolphins Weekend Round-Up: Zach Thomas; Trent Green; Cap Update
2007-07-02 07:02:00 THOMAS NOT A HALL-OF-FAMER? Pete Prisco, of CBS Sportsline, was a guy I always thought was a good writer; a guy that I tought actually did know his stuff. But now I begin to wonder. He recently did an article about current players and their chance at making the Hall of Fame. Apparently, Zach Thomas doesn't even have a chance, according to Prisco. He has Thomas listed in the category of "No Way," but has Ray Lewis as a definite and Brian Urlacher as a "Needs More Work." How can Urlacher be closer to Canton than Thomas? Just one glance at the numbers and it's easy to see that, if anything, Thomas has a better shot than Urlacher. Thomas averages 9.6 tackles per game (6 solo) while Urlacher averages 7.9 tackles per game (6 solo). Thomas also has a higher forced turnover rate per game (0.2) than Urlacher does (0.17) and has 4 career TDs while Brian has none. But hey, what do I know? I guess I'm just too big of a "homer" to se...
