Bharti Airtel’s Zain Loses Subscribers – Videocon May Sell 26%
2010-09-01 13:31:00 Zain losing ground in Kenya We have been following Kuwait-based Zain Telecom’s Africa unit right since it showed interest to when the deal was finally sealed, to when Bharti decided to pump in $308 million in the next 1 and a half years to reach the top spot in mobile services providers in Kenya. However things are not exactly going according to plan with Bharti Zain’s subscriber base falling by a little over 13% from over 42 million subscribers quoted during the acquisition to 36.36 million announced earlier in August. Bharti Airtel spokesman dismissed the decline in subscribers by saying that the reporting in Kenya was different from that of India. According to Bharti, a user is not accounted for if he / she has not received a single call for a month. Bowever, analysts say that most telcos label a user inactive only if he / she has been inactive for anywhere between 3 to 6 months. And now we have reports that Bharti has finally acquired Kuwait based Zain Telecom’s African assets at an enterprise value of $10.7 billion. And with this acquisition, Bharti Airtel becomes the fifth largest wireless and mobile solutions provider in the world, with a subscriber base of about 179 million spread across 18 countries. Zain Africa alone has a huge mobile operations base in 15 countries with over 42 million customers. Tele-Subscriber Base Touches 600M March saw a steady growth in the number of telephone subscribers in India which is said to have increased by 3.22 percent from a figure of 581.97 million in January to a massive 600.69 million at the end of February. Bharti Secures Funds For Zain Acquisition
2010-03-22 10:17:00 In a press statement released yesterday, Bharti Airtel said that it has successfully secured the complete amount it requires for the proposed acquisition of the Kuwait-based Zain Telecom’s Africa unit (Zain Africa BV). In a related development, Bharti’s stock prices surged 2.2% in the morning session on the BSE, in wake of the impending acquisition. According to the statement, the financing was oversubscribed, with major international banks committing to underwrite the total amount. Standard Chartered Bank, which is also Bharti’s lead adviser,  has committed the highest amount at USD 1.3 billion followed by USD 0.9 billion by Barclays, according to sources. Other co-advisors, which include ANZ, BNP, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Credit Agricole CIB, DBS, HSBC, Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation have contributed USD 600 million each.
