YAHOO’S SECRET GOOGLE DOCS KILLER: ZIMBRA
2008-03-13 22:38:00 Last September, Yahoo acquired Zimbra, an enterprise Web email company. Zimbra is an impressive product. It does e-mail in a browser better than you've ever seen it. The company also makes a business-class e-mail server, and many of its services interconnect to Microsoft's e-mail products--the Exchange server and the Outlook client. Nonetheless, it is hard, at first glance, to see how Zimbra fits into Yahoo's business. Yahoo previously acquired OddPost, another dazzling e-mail technology company, and it was still in the process of rolling out OddPost-powered improvements to its millions of Yahoo Mail users when it acquired Zimbra. But when I sat down with Zimbra CEO Satish Dharmaraj to get a demo of the new offline e-mail client (very impressive), the importance of Zimbra to Yahoo became clear. Zimbra is not just an e-mail play. It's a nascent productivity suite. While aside from its well-developed e-mail offering it's still a very young product, it looks like it could event...

Yahoo’s Zimbra Releases v5.0 with BlackBerry Support, New Ajax Features
2008-02-05 06:32:00 Zimbra, an open-source alternative to Microsoft Exchange Server that was acquired by Yahoo this past September, has released version 5.0 of its collaboration suite. The upgrades are various and wide-reaching, with support finally here for the BlackBerry and several improvements made to Zimbra’s browser-based email client. In addition to managing their email, calendars and contacts, customers can now use Zimbra’s browser-based client to instant message, collaborate on documents via wiki, and share files. Yahoo search functionality, and local search in particular, has been integrated into the browser-based client as well, enabling users to search Yahoo Maps from within their email interface.Zimbra’s desktop client, which was soft launched last March and emulates much of the browser-based client, now supports non-Zimbra email accounts (like Yahoo Mail and Gmail, or any POP/IMAP account). However, desktop support for instant messaging, document collaboration, and file sharing has y...
How to setup Zimbra in your iphone
2008-01-23 00:51:00 The Apple iPhone can be used to access Zimbra Collaboration Suite using IMAP/POP3, Safari, and iSync. It can also access Zimbra Collaboration Suite with Exchange, using the IMAP protocol for retrieving mail. It does not currently support Exchange ActiveSync or “over the air” syncing due to limitations on the iPhone. Unlike Apple Mail 2.1.1 on OS X and ActiveSync 5+ on Windows Mobile Phones, the iPhone will accept multiple Exchange accounts that can be used with the Zimbra Collaboration Suite server. Zimbra Collaboration Suite has connectors for Windows and Macintosh that will allow your iPhone to sync to the Zimbra server via local applications. Both connectors interact with Apple’s iTunes; you must have iTunes installed to be able to sync. IMAP, POP, or Exchange Settings Using IMAP, POP, or Exchange does not require any type of Zimbra connector. It is important to note that using these settings only will not sync Contacts or Calendars, only mail messages. Note: Th...
Zimbra provides full iphone and apple support
2008-01-23 00:51:00 It’s been a question that’s been asked in our forums since the time the iPhone was first announced: “Will Zimbra support the iPhone?†and “Does Zimbra support the iPhone?†Yes! (to both) Currently, you can connect to Zimbra using the Exchange server, POP3, or IMAP. If you have the iSync connector installed, you can sync contacts, calendars, and address books. If you’re a fan of the Web Client, you’ll be happy to know that our Standard client is 100% compatible with the iPhone, providing all of the features of the Desktop, on the iPhone. Kevin Kluge, Zimbra’s VP of Engineering, says: “We are committed to making the iSync connector, [which is] available in the Network Edition, work well in this environment. If over-the-air sync is added, we will examine what if any changes are needed to ZCS to have the iPhone successfully sync against a Zimbra server.” Bookmark Me Related PostsHow to setup Zimbra in your iphone (0)Zmanda delivers Mac and Lin...

Over the past year, Zimbra has been on The VAR Guy's radar multiple times. Some service providers and universities have aggressively embraced Zimbra as a reliable, cost-effective alternative to Microsoft Exchange in recent years.

Zimbra or Google Calendar with Thunderbird and Lightning
2007-09-11 17:04:00 The title sounds a bit Mythological eh? I originally published this entry on my work blog but felt that some people might be able to get some use out of this tip. To use it, you’ll need Zimbra or Google Calendar. I’ll cover Zimbra mostly and then give a link on how to setup Google Calendar at the end. For those interested, my work blog is here.If you don’t have Zimbra, they have a free Open Source Community Edition available. It’s feature rich and quite configurable for your email. Introducing Zimbra Collaboration Suite
2007-07-04 08:01:00 he collaboration space is getting crowded these days, with various products offering Exchange-like functionality and a few enticing extras. Among the available solutions is Zimbra, which provides a collaboration server that runs on Linux. Find out what Justin James discovered when he installed Zimbra and put it through its paces. This article is also available as a PDF download. For a detailed comparison of Exchange vs. Zimbra costs, check out this worksheet. It seems like a lot of new players are entering the "collaboration server" space lately. In a nutshell, these servers try to contain much, if not all, of the functionality of Microsoft Exchange Server, which is the baseline product in this market. Some of them introduce new features and functionality as well. Along with the already established Scalix (TechRepublic's review of Scalix can be found here), Zimbra is entering the space with a collaboration server that runs on Linux. Like Scalix, Zimbra comes in a range of editi...

For Exchange and Lotus Domino/Notes VARs serving higher education, it might be time to give Zimbra a look.
