Everex Zonbu laptop only $279 but subscription of $15 PCM
2008-02-15 08:20:00
We all like cheap laptops and the Everex Zonbu laptop is definitely one of these, the price for this laptop is only $279 but there is a catch. We found over at PC Mag that they were not that excited about the subscription-based Zonbu desktop when they previously wrote about that. But they still carried on ...
Subscription-based Zonbu Laptop Review
2008-02-15 03:01:00
PC Mag has taken the subscription-based Zonbu laptop for a spin, and here's what they have to say about it. Pros: $279 laptop. Gentoo Linux is solid. Unlike the Zonbu PC, the Zonbu Notebook actually has 60GB of local storage. Comes with 20 free software apps, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet. Cons: $15-per-month subscription plan is the catch. Root access is locked down. VIA parts can't handle HD clips and cause slow boot times. Would you pick it up? After all, $15 a month does add up to a fair sum after a couple of years, and considering the rather lacklustre graphical and processor performances, you might want to take some time to really think about it before making a purchase. Everex Zonbu Notebook Review
2008-02-13 15:40:00
The Zonbu PC, a $99 miniature desktop that debuted earlier this year, generated some excitement among those with shallow pockets—at least until they saw the fine print. You have to pay the two-year subscription plan (ranging anywhere from $12.95 to $19.95 per month) up front before you can call the desktop your own. In return, you get around-the-clock technical support, 25GB to 100GB worth of online storage, and the comfort of knowing that you'll never have to update your PC manually again. The plan worked well enough that Zonbu decided to take its subscription-based services on the road, in the form of a laptop. The Everex Zonbu Notebook, which launched earlier this year, loads Gentoo Linux and runs on green, or energy-efficient, parts furnished by VIA.
Zonbu Notebook review

Zonbu Notebook reviewSo you’re ready to try Linux but you don’t have a DVD burner or the ability to download large files. What’s a body to do? Well, you can try the Zonbu notebook, a fairly inexpensive Everex laptop with 1.5GHz VIA C7-M and 512MB and 60GB of hard drive space and running Zonbu OS, a Gentoo Linux variant with a full set of open source productivity and gaming apps.Who is the Zonbu for? It’s not for you. It’s for other people. The notebook isn’t slim — it’s 1.5 inches thick and weighs 5 pounds. It’s not powerful — the VIA chip is sufficient and very low power but you’re not going to be rendering Toy Story IV on here. It lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes in a DVD playback test — AKA not so good. The version of Linux it runs is fairly speedy and has Vista-eqsue eye candy and, like all entry-level Linux installs all the hard stuff is hidden deep within the OS, ensuring that no one will ever type ‘rm -rf /’ accidentally or, more importantly, inst...

2007-11-30 12:23:00
Okay, so it isn't exactly the EEE, XO or classmate PC but the Zonbu Notebook is right up there with the three competing for the cheapest notebook in the market. The Zonbu Notebook has a 15.4 inch widescreen display, 1.5 GHz VIA processor, 512MB memory, 60GB hard disk drive, DVD-ROM/CD-RW optical drive, and VIA Chrome9 HC IGP graphics card. Connectivity options on the Zonbu Notebook includes 3 USB ports, Ethernet port, and built-in 802.11 b/g WiFi. The Zonbu Notebook is made by EVEREX and weighs only 2.4 kg. So why is the Zonbu Notebook so cheap? Well, like the EEE, XO, and Classmate PC, it doesn't rely on the Windows Operating System or Microsoft Office, instead, it has 20 of the best open source applications. Zonbu Notebook fot $279: Cheap and GreenThe Zonbu notebook is designed to be energy efficient and low maintainence, thanks to automatic system updates and a paid subscription service. The Zonbu notebook starts at just $279 if you’re willing to commit to a two-year, $14.95 per month subscription fee.The $279 price tag sure sounds low, but the total cost of ownership over the first two years is at least $638 if you want automatic updates, unlimited support and online backups. If you want to buy the Zonbu notebook outright the cost is $479.‘People fell in love with the Zonbu Mini because it freed them from all of the hassles associated with computer maintenance,’ said Zonbu CEO Gregoire Gentil. ‘Now they can have the same benefits on-the-go with the new Zonbu Notebook.’ According to Gentil, people shouldn’t have to be their own IT administrators. ‘We don’t want people to spend a single minute worrying about configuration, setup, crashing hard drives, viruses, hackers...

Zonbu's subscription-based PC reviewedPosted Jul 7th 2007 2:24AM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: DesktopsPC World has gotten its hands on the semi-infamous Zonbu desktop -- a Linux based, environmentally friendly, ultra-small, ultra-cheap PC which is being launched this month -- and they've issued the first field report. The system, which we mentioned back in May, is based around a Via chipset and has no internal storage save for 512MB of RAM and a 4GB flash drive used for the OS. The $99 computer is meant to be used in conjunction with a $12.95-a-month service, much like a mobile phone (with a two year commitment and all), and provides 25GB of storage space on Amazon's S3 servers. The reviewer seems impressed with the speed and stability of the computer, OS, and included apps, but underwhelmed with the online storage process (slow, small), and lack of an included optical drive. The critique also covers a "community" version of the Zonbu ($250), which axes the subscription and add...
