The Great MP3 Player Debate - Comparing iPods and Zunes
2008-02-27 18:55:00
By Jennifer WasilewskiBefore Microsoft came along with the Zune, there really was no major competitor in the MP3 player market. The iPod was at the top of the charts and everything else left more to be desired. Finally, in an attempt to even out the playing field the market was introduced to this new comer. Maybe you have an iPod already but are curious about the hype surrounding Zune. Maybe you're in the market for an MP3 player and are wondering which is best for you. Regardless of why you're interest has peaked is a brief comparison of the two major players in the MP3 market.Buying MusicAssuming you are a law abiding citizen who does things the right way, buying music to put on your MP3 player is a must. Thanks to iTunes, you're options are almost limitless. Unfortunately, in this area Zune doesn't fare so well. That doesn't mean they won't catch up. Sometimes it's just a matter of time before everyone jumps on the wagon so don't assume it's always going to be slim picki...

You can't keep a good retailer down, especially the kind that gadget nerds like us so adore: those that breaking sales embargoes and put hotly anticipated product (like these new Zunes, for example) on store shelves early. Behold, new Zunes -- which aren't supposed to be on sale until next week -- popping up on store shelves at Circuit City and Target. Granted, we don't know how many (if any) sold, since it sounds like they may have actually gotten pulled before customers made a dash for the registers, but who knows, perhaps you might strike Zune gold by trawling the shelves at your local mega-retailer this very weekend. You know who to tip off if you bring home the booty, right? (Note: read link only hits up the Target Zunes, not CC's Zune batch, which is separate.) New Zunes to share video?
2007-11-07 00:33:00
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video Microsoft just sent out the November Zune News email blast, and it's got a rather intriguing line in there: "... Zune Social where you can share music, videos and pictures that define you." We know Stevie B has spoken about the idea of Zunes sharing video, but we're suddenly concerned with the world of pain about to befall either us -- in DRM form -- or Microsoft -- in lawsuit form.P.S. -What the hell is up with "The Social" popping back up? Didn't Microsoft leave it behind? Or has "the social" just become the product's tagline-tagline? New Zunes on November 13
2007-10-08 06:07:00
The new models of Zune are coming. Microsoft has finalized the release date for the new Zune models. Zune was first launched on November 14, 2006, the second Tuesday of the month. The new models will also come out on the second Tuesday of November, that is November 13, 2007.Amazon.com is listing the launch date for the second generation Zune devices as November 13, a date which Microsoft has confirmed. The software giant's official public statement during this week's announcement of the new gadgets was that they will be available in "mid-November".Two new Zunes with flash memory of 4 GB and 8 GB will be priced at around $150 and $200, respectively. A high capacity player with an 80 GB hard drive will also debut, retailing for around $250. Apart from these models, Microsoft plans to keep the original 30 GB model. Link
Zune 30 will be updated to all features of new Zunes (unlike Apple do)
2007-10-07 12:45:00
Microsoft has taken a fresh approach in updating its mp3 lineup. They are not actually trying to replace the original Zune (called as Zune 30) but are actually adding new variety to their lineup. Now what does this actually means is that the current zune owners who bought Zune 30 will get all the new features (yes all of them) of Zune 4, Zune 8 and Zune 80 through a firmware upgrade. This is something which Apple has failed to deliver for their loyal iPod users. Whenever a new iPod was released, the older versions didn't get any new updates or the features of the newer models which left their loyal users with no option but to spend more bucks and get the new device. In what I consider to be a classy move, Microsoft is imbuing each Zune device with exactly the same features. (And yes, this includes the original Zune 30, which will require a software update.) So if you have bought a Zune last year doesn't mean you're out of luck. What a concept.Updates for Zune 30 will include:>The ...

OK, this is what we've all been waiting at the edge of our seats for... BetaNews is announcing that they have the inside scoop that Microsoft WILL be holding an event tomorrow.  The main part of the event will center around MP3 players, and both Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Design and Development chief J Allard will be on hand.  Image: from Zunescene They are also stating that the announcement will include Microsoft's entry into the flash-based device market with their flash Zunes.  The flash based players will measure 3-inches by 1.25-inches and are said to look much like the iPod nano. The smaller Zunes will be video capable, and are rumored to include Wi-Fi and higher storage than competing products.
