Tank Theory May 2008 Edition, Featuring the Comeback Kid: James Roper
2008-05-16 04:55:00
Earlier this week, Tank Theory has announced its new line for the month of May. As usual, guest artists are happily involved in production -- resulting in wide range of style brought to us. First is from The Tank Theory Artist Society (specialized section aimed to invite today's premier artists and designers to showcase their works via Tank Theory wearable medium), UK-based artist James Roper has been once again invited to ink his imagination via medium of this tee called Saccade. Mr. Roper, whose personal website is up at www.jroper.co.uk, is not actually a stranger to Tank Theory fan -- in the past, he has contributed some other good pieces for Tank Theory such as Reflex and Fallout. I bet some folks would celebrate the comeback of Mr. Roper with Saccade T-shirt. Another good piece come from T-shirt of the Month. Stained Skull is a multi-color waterbased tee designed by Thank Theory art director Zach. But it's the ladies who get special attention from Tank Theory with this t...

Trouble/Tease Combines the Best of Art and Tee Printing Technique
2008-05-15 02:18:00
There are so much surprise when you take a look at Trouble/Tease collection. Apparently, it's not only stylish wearable that Trouble/Tease offers but also the taste of contemporary, quirky-look artwork by TMH. TMH known as artist whose lovely works often about daily humanism pictured in unusual looking individuals and objects around them. I find TMH arts as mix of traditional arts that have modified to meet our modern preference. But it's actually Trouble/Tease that brings these artworks to the next level. Trouble/Tease tees are hand-screened with nontoxic water-based ink. They are designed such that to showcase good printing technique of gradient colors combined with good graphic arts by TMH. You can even entertain yourself just by looking at the colorful image gallery of these shirts. Trouble/Tease sell its stuff from Etsy shop and you're invited to inquire about sizes, colors, etc, and expect many more shirts in the weeks to come.

Option G: Because Options A Through F Were Boring
2008-05-14 05:56:00
Nature... it's simultaneously beautiful and kind of awesome. Option G has tapped into that vibe big time, producing a diverse collection of illustrated shirts that all feel grounded in the natural world.Looking at their shirts, there's usually something that feels unique. A collection of trees form a skull instead of a forest. Energy is represented by that most active of animals, a hummingbird, and affixed with an electric cord. But unlike a lot of eco-focused brands, Option G also explores the humor of pretending that nature isn't all it's cracked up to be- like the slogan "Winning the war against trees" poised beneath a bulldozer. All shirts at Option G are created by artist Cole Gerst, who also heads a design firm of the same name.

Elena Gallen's Freakshow Collection
2008-05-11 05:33:00
There's something absolutely refreshing about seeing familiar imagery, twisted in a way that you never imagined. That's why I like Elena Gallen's Freakshow shirts. They all take Disney properties and re-envision them as circus freaks. A bearded Snow White and two-headed Bambi are instantly recognizable and hilarious. The other illustrations, the little mermaid sporting three boobs and Ursula the seawitch as a tattooed lady, are awesome as well, though for me The Little Mermaid is a less classic reference than Snow White and Bambi are.Elena Gallen is a freelance artist from Spain. In addition to really nailing that Disney style, her shirts about modern pop culture (Kate Moss and Tinkerbell, Paris Hilton's dog) are much, much more attractive than I would have expected for celebrity joke shirts.
Dead Presidents are Thrilling
2008-05-10 05:28:00
I have a decided weakness for Thriller parodies. I think that's something most children of the eighties share, as Michael Jackson (you know, back before things got... odd) was probably the primary non-cartoon pop cultural figure of my childhood.Another shirt subject that is pure gold is presidents- unlike the politics attached to more modern figures, classic politicians broadcast patriotism and an appreciation of history. So when a shirt combines those two ideas... well, it's certainly worth a look! In the shirt Franklin and the Dead Presidents , the titular historical fellow performs that familiar Thriller dance, flanked by favorite politicians like Roosevelt and Lincoln. Zombified American legends, who could say no to that? This shirt is a product of the internet cartoon Dr. McNinja, the story of a doctor... who is also a ninja. And if ninjas speak to you more than eighties nostalgia, their shirt Knife Eye Attack is also worth a look.
Little Hype of T-shirt Design Contest on Hypsoo
2008-05-08 17:37:00
T-shirt design competition is (not-so) hot (again), but what can we expect from this little hype of Hypsoo? It offers no glamorous prizes of hundreds (or even thousands) cold hard cash but only free tee shirts of winning designs. Further info we can dig (from the footprints) is Hypsoo offers you "comfortable, healthy and beautifully crafted which is made from the best cotton available in India". Yeah, forget about American Apparel. Hypsoo will definitely fight for the most creative submissions with similar, newly-born tee shirts design competition such as Glass Boutique (the regular competition section), Gorilla Tank, SpringLeap, Code Creations, and Bang Bang T-shirts.

Adventure Time for Your Torso
2008-05-06 21:07:00
Maybe you've seen the hit cartoon short Adventure Time . It's a funny tale of a boy and his dog (sorry, friend!) who go on great adventures. In addition to being widely watched on the internet, it also has aired on Nickelodeon and has won awards (including first place at the AISFA-East Animation Awards). So I guess it's not surprising that this video, renowned for its humor and visual gags, would make the leap to the t-shirt medium. For a limited time, 12 designs based on the cartoon are offered, featuring the video's best characters and moments. From Lincoln to the unicorn to Pen and Jake themselves, the gang's all here. Rhombus!Other videos that have made the leap from Youtube to fabric include Charlie the Unicorn and Chris Crocker. Could this be a growing trend?
Ucon, Clothing Label from Berlin with Extraordinary Designs
2008-05-05 03:24:00
Berlin-based clothing label, Ucon, has just released its new digital look-book and pdf-formatted catalog. Friendly warning before you click over the link: both come up with huge file-size; but they are worth a look -- just make sure you are broadband connected otherwise loading time would be very slow. The new Ucon T-shirts collection represents modern taste urban tees that look basic but with no less of extra care and extraordinary design. For instance, the Tricord tee showcases the 3D-look, diamond-shape print with the different small Ucon labels here and there make this piece elegantly awesome. On the other instance, Ucon isn't shy with little experiment on religious culture and that's when Blading Is Ok was born. The huge 3D Silicon font print of "Blading" actually says "Islam is okay!"; unfortunately though, the zoomed-in image preview doesn't tell much about that. Besides T-shirts, Ucon also produces urban-styled other goodies such as hoodies, pant...

Acrylick Spring 2008 Collection is Here, Say Hello to Bonita
2008-05-04 19:12:00
On 18th of April, Los Angeles-based streetwear label, Acrylick,  celebrated its official launch party for its Spring 2008 collection. Some photos from the party -- which was attended by Pete Rock & DJ Premier --  are up on the blog. It's really awesome, I bet, to get people dancing and having fun while introducing the new line up. Acrylick' Spring 2008 is inspired mainly by music, retro-ness with some tees are touching up little bit on humanity issue such as My Choice  and Be Heard. My favorite though, is this tee called Bonita, which actually focuses on "eccentricity" as the center of idea. Acrylick's new tees are now available on its own store and some online retailer such as The Fizix and Digital Grave. image above is from Acrylick's online store, from left: My Choice (pink, girls-size version) and Bonita (white color) via filthy Dripped
Monkeys Rule at Monkey Fist
2008-05-03 03:52:00
Monkey Fist is a brand with an origin story so good, it doesn't even need to be true. A childhood accident, a promising surgery, and the unholy union of man and beast. Legendary stuff, and certainly interesting fodder for shirt design. All of Monkey Fist's shirts have a strong, one color print. That's because they're heavily graffiti inspired, with a particular affection for Banksy. Monkeys are in every scene depicted on these shirts, from an image in a Polaroid snapshot to the students in a school picture. The monkeys, in addition to being pretty hilarious-looking, also imply the question of how close to animals humans really are. Also of interest is the Viral section of the site- you can check out their designs as graffiti, applied to various products, or even watch a video. It should be interesting to watch that section grow as the brand evolves.

A Reality Check for New T-shirt Graphic Artists
2008-05-01 16:00:00
I feel like I got a slap when one reader post this comment after my post on artist-friendly T-shirt label, Artcotic. On this post, I was basically suggesting that graphic artists who are new to world of T-shirt design to be picky in selling their artworks; especially when it comes to copyrights terms and compensation. My suggestion was based on my observation that are "healthy" demands for graphic arts from vendors and clothing labels for these artworks. However, this case may not always be true for all. One reader, who preferably wanted to be called "anonymous", wrote his/her experience of "sub-par" artists dilemma on whether to sell their designs to labels or by themselves. Here's just the conclusion of the comment ...A shirt printer is not going to discriminate against you for a lack of reputation, so if they see your work and aren't throwing offers your way then get a clue -- you're no Shepard Fairey, at least not yet. If you offer your wo...

Bloodgold Prints Them on the Unusual Places
2008-05-01 05:27:00
For most T-shirts, the best parts to show the graphic art are on the front-chest and/or body-back side of it. This is probably because these are two parts which hugest space on our body where often graphic get the best attention. Bloodgold, however, tries different approach than anybody else. As you could see on the images above, Bloodgold print its graphic art around the round neck of the shirt. While these prints might be relatively small, they are actually just big enough to show what the art is about. Bloodgold itself was started in 2006 by duo designers from Germany whose dream is to set up a consistent, independent streetwear line. Bloodgold takes various elements to their creations, from the graphic design itself to cuts and the position of prints and seams.  There only few collection on their web store; I wish to see more prints-and-cuts ideas come up from this Germany label. via Shirtspotting

Urban Humanity: Nature-Inspired
2008-04-27 05:36:00
What is Urban Humanity ? It's about going a step beyond by trying to build a company that benefits the community and protects the world around us. To that end, they keep things as local as possible, meaning that there are definitely no sweatshops involved. They're looking out for the environment as well, using organic and recycled materials when possible. Even the profits end up benefiting more than just the company itself- a portion of profits is donated to charity.Their collection reflects their beliefs, focusing on simple, natural imagery. These one color designs are visually thought provoking, such as the shirt showing a wreath-like shape made up of birds in flight. It's all inspired by the feel of the Pacific Northwest, but wearable enough for any region.

Searching the Next Best Tee Shirts, Flickr Way
2008-04-25 08:04:00
Best known as photo-sharing website, Flickr is not a "users-powered" website that immune from T-shirt fever. Beside showcasing for people's coolest photos and, sometime, non-photograph visual art; there are also tons of art and design products laying there waiting to be picked. In short term, Flickr has become a vehicle for smart vendors or individual artists to reach the right people -- those who appreciate visual art --  with no or little barriers. Searching for rare T-shirts on Flickr is no brainer. First, you can always type Flickr's search button key words like "tee", "tee shirt" or "T-shirt" to find some really good T-shirts (but don't put additional word "wet" as that gives different meaning). Just to let you know, these are some indie tee labels that already posted on Tshirt island has also have their own Flickr gallery: 410BC (review), ChopShop Store (review), and Top Dollar (review). If you're lucky, you'll fi...

besubversive: For the Sake of Good Design and Mankind!
2008-04-23 05:35:00
Besubversive has a pretty cool take on t-shirts. Their goal is to keep the branding low-key, meaning that only the tag gives it away. The images are natural-looking and subtle, so you can wear the shirt without the shirt wearing you.Unlike some companies who will reprint whatever the public desires, these guys know there's nothing cooler than being the only guy in the room with the shirt everyone loves. So sorry latecomers, each design is limited to 1000 prints. The overall goal seems to be to make each customer feel like the shirt they buy was made with that person in mind. Part of that is pampering the buyer, and besubversive does it up right with a gift pack included a postcard of the shirt design, a notepad, and some stickers. Sounds good to me!Limited edition designs that don't turn you into a walking billboard? Sounds pretty subversive to me!

These T-shirts are Deliciously Black-inked
2008-04-21 16:29:00
Jillian, the one-women-show CEO of Delicious Tees, is the latest interview spot of T-shirt Magazine. The conversation include discussion about Jillian's inspiration in designing her collection, tips for new comer in T-shirt business as well her role as the "sole trader" (and how she makes it right so far). My favorite part of interview is actually on the second question; about single color, black-inked T-shirts on all Delicious Tees' current line. Here's Jillian's answer: The art/message just felt right in black this time around. I let the color come into play with the tee blanks. I think there is a lot of purity in the stories behind each graphic and I wanted the message to be bold and clear. I'm not sure if it's actually more than an excuse for not having enough ink, but having mono color design for here isn't equal to limitation for creativity. Just take a look at Nature Speak (image above), Instrument, or Dizzy Girls, the very great detail on graphics art presen...

Mustache & Friends: 20% Off Today Only
2008-04-20 22:28:00
Few things are truly timeless, spanning both most eras and most cultures. But mustaches are among that elite group of elements, even surpassing most because of their easy integration into modern humor. Just about everyone has, at least once, defaced an image by drawing a mustache on it. And mustaches convey any number of things about a wearer, from their politics to their musical influences or even their cultural background. In short, mustaches are absolutely ripe from some seriously awesome shirt designs. Mustache & Friends is doing a great job of capitalizing on the range of possibilities their icon allows, from shirts that emphasize the shape of a mustache to works that point out its use by other cultures. The color and style variation already shown in their launch collection gives me faith that the store will continue to grow in diversity as they expand. The unique Batstacio necklace, made of actual recycled vinyl records, is especially worth a look.Today only, Mustache & Friends...
Pattern Vs. Gradient: Eio Spring/Summer Collection '08
2008-04-19 17:28:00
Under its Spring /Summer '08 line, Eio introduces some of urban style tees that occupy a sweet combination between one-kind-pattern and gradient as the focal point. These tee shirts might not get the most thumbs-up from those who are looking for T-shirts with printed fancy graphics but will score anyone who like simpler piece of apparel. The harmonization of two or three colors gradient on that Eio introduces on these tees have actually created a rather minimalist design that still look sweet and not too boring. For variation of style, you may agree with me that unzipped jackets -- and therefore, not hiding the pattern graphics --  could be good match for these tees. Just a little bit about Eio (Excess is Ok) clothing. the London-based started on 2003 by Goldsmiths graduates who are dedicated in creating clothing brand that draw a  line around high end streetwear, directional style and work of art. Eio's collections have been sold internationally, via sto...

410 BC, Fresh T-shirts with Fashionably Ethical Attitude
2008-04-19 05:01:00
Like many others small and independent clothing brand, 410 BC was started by friends who are believe in achieving their own goal; more likely "to have fun" rather "to be the next rich and fame, quickly". While producing trendy T-shirts that has youngster appeal, 410 BC set itself different by pursuing fashionably ethical approach and embrace openness. It isn't shy away with higher tag price of the collection -- most tee sold for $28, instead it blames 100% organic cotton T-shirt it offers and (about) 15% profits of specific pieces donated to charitable organization for the price. 410 BC, which name inspired by the year when Democracy was restored in Athens,  also encourages openness of consumership on its own blog: People frequently buy things and they don't know anything about where the product came from or who produced it. ... We believe that everyone who makes a purchase has a right to know about the companies and people who...

Oktoberfest Every Day at Black Forest
2008-04-17 02:14:00
When the phrase "t-shirts inspired by Germany" comes to mind, well, the mental images are probably not that aesthetically pleasing. I imagine military themes, sausages and maybe some electronic music, not gorgeous illustration. But there's another side to Germany, the Black Forest . It's the traditional Germany of folk tales, lederhosen and of course Oktoberfest . The imagery has the woodsy, crafty charm you'd expect based on their influences, with themes ranging from cuckoo clocks to wolves and even up to a dead rabbit. The one-color prints have a suitably rugged quality that matches the flavor of its inspiration, which makes each print look something like a woodcut from the era.Part of what I enjoy about Black Forest is how far they ran with the idea- instead of limiting themselves to shirts, they've exploded into jewelry boxes, necklaces and... guitar straps! Those are areas shirt companies rarely venture into, but maybe they should. Despite the variation of medium in their prod...

Yay, Cosmic Soda Celebrates its First Sale!
2008-04-16 19:49:00
I really like Cosmic Soda 's positive attitude, it just open the shop on April, 7th and proudly announced its first sale celebration award (on the same day) on its News a& Announcement section. As a new tee shop, I found Cosmic Soda is pretty well-prepared for the big day launch. It has already bunch of cool dudes on the designer list, contributing fresh artsy graphic tees complete with each of their unique personality. Those who are on the list such as ChipMunk, Weirdink, Busybuilding (who designed I Need Some Air tee -- see above image) and Jake Myler -- just to name a few. The list is not exhaustive though, Cosmic Soda still openly invite anyone to submit their designs get a scope of internet fame. I couldn't find any more info about the tee shirt garment, etc. it seems that the info page is broken. However, Cosmic Soda's freshly grilled sold for $17 while the long sleeves are for $19. If you're typical Threadless or Uneetee fan who are shy away from wearing s...

Unusual Dyes at Crazy Shirts
2008-04-13 02:16:00
Why are Crazy Shirts so crazy? Many of the shirts themselves are unlike most shirts, using a variety of natural substances to give their shirts their trademark colors. As a company native to Hawaii, their crater-dyed shirts made with volcanic ash have a special charm. Some designs even play on their volcano influence, such as the Volcano Joe's Burn & Grill shirt (featuring the slogan "We burn everything," which I guess is what you'd expect from a volcano-themed restaurant).Other dye types include Kona Coffee, Blue Curacao, Beer, Hemp, Chile, Chocolate, Key Limes, Wine, Money, Ti Leaf, Sunflower, Lavender, and Hibiscus. All these substances bring to mind lazy summer days of carefree decadence, perfect for anyone coveting that Hawaii lifestyle. The range of dyes also gives a nice variety in colors, while maintaining that casual, natural feel.
T-shirt War is Tired, Try Tee vs. Tee
2008-04-12 02:04:00
I have no idea why Karl hides T-shirt War from Tcritic's homepage, as if it doesn't deserve to be publicly known. T-shirt War was launched in September 2006. The idea is to battle out T-shirts in one-on-one basis through people votes. It's nice-time waster and you can get a stumble upon-like experience for some good T-shirts you might never seen before. I don't see any improvement since it's launched and less votes are counted that its earlier days. I feel it is getting tired. Maybe - that's why, Aaron Baluczynski, came up with the enhanced version of T-shirt War called Tee vs. Tee. What I mean with "enhanced" is that Tee vs. Tee armed with better-browsing feature such as categories, tagging/tags and Leaderboard. I see Aaron as quite open-minded person, so it's likely that there will be more new features if he gets good suggestion. And if you have more time to just clicks-and-vote, you could also submit your favorite tee shirts. Have fun!

Welcoming the Newly Formed Gorilla Riot
2008-03-07 18:12:00
Gorilla Riot is a newly formed artist driven clothing label. It was launched just in November 2007 but already has few nicely-mixed tee shirts collection contributed by seven graphic artists such as TheIrisOn, Bagger 43, EyeKaps and Lamb Shank -- just to name a few. By the way, if you're kind of boring with so many rich-colors tees, you should give a shot tee shirts by Bagger 43 and Lamb Shank. These tees are more into sketched, unfinished works but they are pretty neat. There will be many new lines coming out in 2008, as they promise me, but current collection is also not something you can miss out.

Specialty Cuts and More at My WIndup Bird
2008-03-06 22:28:00
My Windup Bird is a San Francisco-based shirt company that really bridges the line between t-shirts and fashion. Their inspirations help set them apart from the crowd, drawing ideas from the worlds of art, photography and travel instead of witty media references. As Windup Bird puts it, even their print run size puts them more in the world of art than the world of commerce as they are "hand-screened and produced in small batches, like limited edition pieces of art."Windup Bird is also noteworthy for their Special Cuts - variations on the cut of the typical tee including tee dresses, tunics, scoop back tops, hoodies and more. While a lot of these fashionable options are strictly for the ladies, their traditionally cut t-shirts are very guy-friendly. Check out two of my favorites, Bike Girl and Anarchy Antelope.
Part Of It: Shirts that Support a Cause
2008-03-05 03:43:00
A lot of sites sell shirts and donate some of the proceeds back to charity. Typically, the shirts tend to be blatant ads for their cause, nice for fervent supporters maybe, but certainly not the type of work that appeals to the designer shirt crowd.Part Of It turns that formula on its head, contacting artists they'd like to print and then allowing those artists to choose the cause their work will support. Judging from the results, this method really inspired people to create attractive, wearable and meaningful art.Make Art Now by Dustin Amery Hostetler (benefiting the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo) is a gorgeous image, showing the hand of an artist literally trying to catch lightning. It's a cool metaphor for the creative process, and the bold graphics are a great fit for the t-shirt medium. Save Polar Bears by Geneviève Gauckler (benefiting WWF) eschews the drama and goes hard for the cute. Why is the creature green? What is he? And why does he have pink mittens? It is not f...

Interview with Design by Humans, and Photos from DBH Headquarter
2008-03-03 17:34:00
... This is going to be long post, hang on there If you've never failed to follow the latest news from online T-shirt world, by right you should already heard about Design by Humans (DBH). If not, it's a competition-based online tee shop started in July last year, which prints and sells only winning designs picked by members; simply put, it's quite bit like Threadless Although it was started only last year, it already received warm welcome from some T-shirt enthusiasts plus some favorable reviews (see links at the end of this post). And few weeks ago, I' lucky to have  a chance drop Jason Gutierrez, co-founder of DBH, a few questions to get to know how they are doing and to make sure... They are real humans! (Thanks to Jed Seigle for letting this conversation happen) .... Rangga: Who are the guys behind DBH and how did you come up with yet-another T-shirt design competition?
