Exhausted, but laughing
2007-10-11 16:44:00 Let's face it, the modern woman views life through sleepy eyes. Most of us only appear awake and we owe that to coffee. It is no wonder we are all a little tired. We have to keep up with so much, like paying bills, finding lost socks, negotiating Playstation and TV time, testing toys for lead, figuring out how to replace ink cartridges...and that is all before 9 a.m. The thing that gets me through the day, besides my coffee, is laughter. I mean, I love to laugh. I really, really love to laugh. If you are anything like me, then you will love columnist Deidre Reilly, "The Exhaust ed Rapunzel". My favorite pastor's wife
2007-10-07 17:03:00 Some of my pals have asked me how I met Eileen Button. Maybe it is because I refer to her as one of my spiritual advisers and brag about her columns all the time!Well, my first introduction was reading an article she wrote in Newsweek about the role of the pastor's wife. But, I "met" her when she emailed me to ask me if I was going to attend the National Society of Newspaper Columnist conference and how she needed a room mate. I chose to go to the beach, instead of the conference. Eileen won the cartwheel contest and I have wondered if hanging out at the beach was worth not being able to participate in the competition. I do plan on attending next year so that I can embarrass myself trying to throw my body around in awkward spins.Needless to say, Eileen and I are kindred sisters. We do things to amuse people, while not contradicting our faith in the process! As soon as she gets her book published, I'll tell you where you can buy it:) In the meantime, check out the Newsweek article a... Highly Recommend...
2007-10-03 19:55:00 There are two things that I simply adore and highly recommend. One is Christian George's book The Sacred Travels and the other is Ingrid Michaelson's music. In Sacred Travels, Christian writes about the spiritual aspect of the pilgrimage. He takes the reader on a journey to various places he has traveled around the globe. You will feel as if you are a travel companion and can visualize the scenes. You will also have an appreciation for the places which hold meaning in our Christian faith. Ingrid Michaelson's song Keep Breathingis known as the from Grey's Anatomy. To me it is a reminder of the hopelessness in life. I remember a life without hope. The dark days and nights when I tried to find something to live for...I am glad that I found my hope in Jesus Christ. (Ingrid's song are on my playlist on this page.) Check them out at:ChristianGeorge.netIngrid Michaelson on MySpace
Tennis anyone?
2007-09-17 21:30:00 The award winning columnist, and handyman, Bruce Cameron, has a must read on why we should never attempt to play tennis with our children....well, maybe if we get to eat a fresh-baked cookie. For those of who scratching your head, trying to recall the name Bruce Cameron, also known as W. Bruce Cameron and the first true Dubya...well, he is the author of Six Simple Rules for Dating my Teenage Daughter...yeah the same as the TV show. He also wrote How to Remodel a Man.Anyway, put his site on your favorite list because he will give you hope in knowing that you are not alone in parenting. David Smith's global warming solution
2007-09-11 21:11:00 Two of my favorite newspaper columnists are in Michigan. Seriously, what is so funny about that? Eileen Button is in Flint and I think David Smith is in Flushing. I could say something witty about the town names of Flint and Flushing, but I won't because I live in Anniston. The name Anniston is not exciting, but for some reason people expect us to have layered hairstyles and tons of friends. Someone actually asked me once if Jennifer was from Anniston. Anyway, I am getting off topic, as usual. One of Dave's recent columns proposes not sending children to school to end global warming. I only have one question for Dave, "Are you insane or do you want everyone else to be insane, Dave?"I get your point about wanting to save trees and all, because the paper we would save from not sending the kids to school. But, do you realize that by having our kids at home all day the need for medication might increase, thereby increasing the need for paper for prescription pads, thereby increasing th... Great minds...
2007-08-13 22:22:00 I am so convinced that I am somehow related to Eileen Button. Although Eileen lives up North and I, down South, we have so much in common. I mean, when I read her column it is like I wrote it. I have secretly wondered if I am in fact Eileen Button and somehow caught up in a bizarre multiple personality zone. But, I know this can't happen because she lives up North and I, down South. I do have her saying, "Bless your heart"...next I am going to work on adding "y'all" to her vocabulary. So, as I was saying, I have been a little behind on reading columns from my pals...Eileen is always on the top of my list. So, today I read Eileen's latest column on her Web site. Well, she wrote a column in The Flint Journal on July 29 about surviving an amusement park in Michigan.I wrote a blog on July 31 about surviving Six Flags.I am going to re-think that multiple personality thing...or perhaps it is mind control. Like you care (part 1)...
2007-08-13 20:05:00 I have been so busy with the deadline for Longleaf Style magazine, writing my column, and trying to start a new blog for moms in Alabama...needless to say I am quite behind on writing a new Open Letter. So, by all means visit my All the Rage fashion blog or BamaMoms and see for yourself that I have not been sitting in the corner twidling my thumbs or staring needlessly at a blank wall while pretending to work. (Actually, my wall is not blank as there is a Ken Elkins photograph of a woman sweeping her yard. I do stare at this photo often.)Currently, my All the Rage column is focused on the mullet. Also, for those who have asked, I have not heard from Dave Barry about my being named his official fashion consultant for his presidental campaign. I am sure he is so busy having his new suit made. I have emailed him and will let you know if he names me. In the meantime, I am going to stare on my wall... More About: Care , Part , Like You
What would you ask Elizabeth Edwards?
2007-07-26 19:45:00 In preparing for the Blog her 07 conference, Lisa Stone invited bloggers to share questions they would like to ask Elizabeth Edwards . Edwards is the keynote speaker for the conference and Lisa said she will have some time to chat with her, as well as ask questions on behalf of bloggers who are not able to attend.I had two questions and Lisa said they are on her list. Yipee! Although I think mine is the only fashion related question, there are some very interesting ones that obviously took some thought. Check out the conversation, as well as my questions at:On blogging, hate speech, Election '08 and life: What are your questions for Elizabeth Edwards?P.S. Since you are a pal, I will let you know that the only time you will ever find me endorsing a presidential candidate will be for Dave Barry. I am currently waiting for Dave to appoint me his official campaign fashion consultant, so I am a tad bit biased. More About: Would
Open Letter to Matt Drudge
2007-07-26 01:07:00 Dear Matt ,I hope you don't my calling you Matt. I am SO sure that you are used to people calling you Drudge that you totally forgot your name is really Matt. Huh?Listen, before I get to what I want to talk to you about, I have to tell you that I know we are great pals. You see, I read that your father was at some point in his life a social worker and well, I used to be a social worker. I think your mom was a lawyer and thankfully I have not had any run-ins with the law, so we don't have much maternally in common. I can also relate to all of your odd jobs before hitting the big time...I have worked at a radio station, a seminary, a nursing home, for an association of 90 churches, for hospice, and now for a newspaper. It really is not as depressing as it appears. I am a little jealous that you worked at a 7-Eleven because I remember they always had the best slushies. I'll also admit that I will probably never hit the big time (this is what Wiki says you hit), unless I give up caffe... More About: Open , Letter , Matt Drudge , Open Letter
Open Letter to Bill O'Reilly
2007-07-23 22:10:00 Dear Bill,OK, so I am calling you Bill, not Mr. O'Reilly . Get over it already!Gosh, I am sorry about that Bill. It is just that you seem to invoke so much anger in people that I had to make you feel at home in my letter. I do feel that I owe you an apology. No, not for my obvious rudeness, but for telling Dave Barry to just repeat everything you say in hopes of winning the 2008 presidential election. It is just that I think teaming up with him would be a great move for your political career. Oh, that's right your not a politician. All the better. You should seriously consider being Dave's VP running mate. I know that some people are going to think that you should be the president, but the VP position is much better. You can hang out at the White House but no one really pays attention to you, unless of course you shoot someone, or the president has a colonoscopy, or you start a panic about the globe. I think you also have your own form of government, but I have not clarified this ... More About: Open , Bill O , Letter , Open Letter

WorldChangers, Anniston
2007-07-23 18:55:00 When Stan Albright first brought World Chan g ers to Anniston when he was the Associate Director of Missions at the Calhoun Baptist Association about eight years ago, I really didn't understand what it was all about. At the time, I was the Associate Director of Church & Community Ministries and I learned that simply saying youth volunteers will pay to come to your town and repair homes doesn't give it justice. Last week, July 14-21, hundreds of volunteers traveled to Anniston, Ala. to repair homes, sleep on floors, put up with Southern humidity, as well as put up with John Thomas, the associate director of missions at the Calhoun Baptist Association:) Everyone survived. Here are a few photos and information about WorldChangers:Serve Management Group Anniston WorldChangers page

Mike Rogers supports Food Safety
2007-07-19 15:10:00 Most folks in East Alabama, especially our farmers, know agriculture is a major industry for our state. Of course, this year the drought has severely harmed our farmers, and will no doubt impact our state’s agriculture production. In better years, though, annually farm and forestry products typically total about $5 billion for Alabama, with almost half of this total belonging to poultry. The health and safety of these chickens, as well as all our other major food products, is a major concern for our farmers and our nation. Any outbreak or terrorist attack that could disrupt this poultry production or contaminate our food chain – whether in years of drought or normal rains – could not only be devastating for our population, but would also harm our economy locally and nationally. Recently I attended a Homeland Security field hearing in Pennsylvania on the issue of food safety. The hearing brought together noted agriculture experts to talk about our nation’s efforts to prepare... More About: Safety , Food , Mike , Food Safety , Safe
Religious Groups Push Farm Policy
2007-07-19 15:10:00 The Roundtable on Religion and Social Welfare Poli cy By: Roundtable Washington Correspondent anne FarrisFirst published: July 17, 2007Congress this week takes on a task it faces every five years: rewriting the nation's Farm Bill - a hefty and always politically sensitive law that covers almost every imaginable policy on agriculture, land use and feeding programs in America. Among the varied groups of competing interests over the bill are interdenominational religious organizations that have entered the scene with a strong and savvy show of organizing, coalescing and lobbying. They are drawing connections between farm policies and the larger issues of poverty and nutrition. The religious groups' value-based mission falls into the broad category of eliminating poverty worldwide. In practical terms, they believe that goal can be forwarded by making subsidies available to smaller farmers, increasing the eligibility and numbers of people receiving food stamps, increasing investments to ... Secrets of Style

2007-07-10 14:33:00 Secrets of Style By There sa ShadrixCons olidated Publishing, Co.07-08-2007 Have you ever noticed a woman with an effortless sense of style and asked yourself, “What is her secret?”You can’t put your finger on exactly what makes her stand out from other women, but she just seems polished and classic. More than likely, she understands that style is not about fashion or trends, but rather it is a conversation through clothes.Fashion and trends are sort of like leaves blowing in the wind. While fashionistas frantically run around following each leaf, you might be one of the women who catch up to the leaf, only to discover it has not been all the rage since last season. All that running around has only made you feel like a wind-blown mess.Style is telling the world, “I am comfortable in my own skin and I dare to be unique.”So, if you had the nerve to walk up to that woman and ask her secrets of style, I imagine she would share these:Style is all about the basics. Eva Longoria's Pink Dress
2007-07-09 15:26:00 Lordy have mercy. All of this hoopla about the pink dress Eva Longoria wore on her wedding day (she did wear a white wedding dress for the ceremony) is not-so-swell. But, since so many of you have asked me if I know anything about the dress, I have come to your rescue! This is it...from the Spring 2007 Chanel collection. Honestly, while it was one of my fav dresses from the Spring 2007 Chanel Show, it is not something that I would have chosen to wear on my wedding day. Eva wore it without the jacket and paired it with gorgeous jewelry, even though it didn't match her dress. Hey, I am from the south and we just don't wear black and pink with blue accented jewelry. I will not even mention that her shoes are not the best to be paired with this dress! But, hey, who am I to judge a beauty like Eva when I am wearing black sweat pants, a grey t-shirt and purple fuzzy slippers as I am writing this post?Congrats to Eva and what's his name...not only did you marry on a lucky day, you gave P... Raging questions
2007-07-01 17:12:00 By Theresa ShadrixConsolidated Publishing, Co.06-24-2007 A day doesn't go that my expertise on a variety of topics is put to the test. From my kids to my friends to women I meet at the grocery store, I am asked things like, ?Mom, why do Batman and Robin have capes if they can't fly?? to ?What color underwear should I wear with these pants?? Thankfully, I am a curious soul and love finding answers to questions. Well, only questions really worth researching. I once spent an hour reading about dryer lint and realized it wasn't the best use of my time. So, this week I decided it was about time I answered some of your raging questions. Because, after all, you are worth it! Q. What color underwear should I wear with white pants?A. Stick to undergarments that are closest to your skin color. Do not wear white panties or bra because it will show through. If you are light-skinned, you need to wear beige. If you are dark-skinned, then wear black or brown.Q. What is the best way to use self... More About: Questions
Coach T?s Basketball Camp teaches life lessons
2007-06-26 05:17:00 By THERESA SHADRIX Special to the Banner Published Sunday, June 24, 2007 6:00 AM EDTWhen Kevin ?Coach T? Templeton speaks, everyone around him listens. ?You need to thank the person who brought you here today. You need to have an attitude of gratitude.? As he spoke these words to more than 320 junior high and high school basketball players and their coaches at Lee University, June 15, the gym was silent and respectful. Only moments before, he presented championship awards to male and female players who excelled in an intense five day basketball camp that bears his name. This week, Templeton started the camp over again with a new group of around 370 campers and 50 coaches. Over the two week period, teams traveled from Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Virginia, Ohio and the Carolina?s to live in Lee University dorms, play basketball games, hear from dynamic speakers, receive biblical guidance and learn as much as possible from Templeton and the camp staff. Open letter to the blond who pulled out in front of me
More articles from this author:2007-06-21 23:18:00 Dear Blond ie,I hope you don?t my calling you Blondie, cause we both know that is probably not the truth. The only person who can get away with showing her roots is Gwyneth and that is only because she is famous, rich, and married to a rock star. So, listen. I am not trying to be rude but when you pulled out in front of me the other day, I had to remind myself that I was sweet, a Christian and a down home Southern girl. I mean, I know that I was driving a horrendously dirty mini-van and you, well, a nice, little cherry red sports car. This is so off topic, but I heard once that people who drive red sports cars have inferiority complexes. I wonder if those people also pull out in front of people and then give dirty looks. I really would be interested in your thoughts?ya know, if you have them and all. So, anyway, as I was saying. When you pulled out in front of me, I just happened to be holding an ice-cold drink and was about to take a sip?then I had to slam on my brakes. Thanks to you...
