Google has fixed security vulnerabilities related to its Grand Central telecom service and its Google.com Web site, the company said Monday. Google fixed a cross-site scripting vulnerability on the log-in page for Grand Central, a service that allows people to have numerous phone numbers ring on one phone and have a unified voice mail. A cross-site script is a vulnerability found increasingly in Web applications in which malicious code can be injected into Web pages that could be used to attack or compromise visitors to the site. "This issue was reported to us (and everyone else) this morning, and we closed it shortly after being notified," a Google spokesman said. The vulnerability was posted to a security e-mail list called Full Disclosure and was not reported to Google beforehand, meaning Google had to race to fix the issue before someone could write an exploit for it. The researchers have found a way to use silicon nanowires to give rechargeable lithium ion batteries--used in laptops, iPods, video cameras, and mobile phones--as much as 10 times more charge. This potentially could give a conventional battery-powered laptop 40 hours of battery life, rather than 4 hours. the increased battery capacity was made possible though a new type of anode that utilizes silicon nanowires. Traditional lithium ion batteries use graphite as the anode. This limits the amount of lithium--which holds the charger--that can be held in the anode, and it therefore limits battery life. Silicon anodes have the "the highest theoretical charge capacity", but they expand when charging and shrink during use: a cycle that causes the silicon to be pulverized, degrading the performance of the battery. New Electrodes May Provide Safer, More Powerful Lithium-ion (Li-ion) Batter

Li-ion batteries power an increasing number of laptop computers and portable electronic devices. They are now being eyed for motor vehicles of the future. However, recent recalls of millions of Li-ion batteries due to overheating have raised safety concerns, with researchers seeking new materials to make safer, more powerful batteries. In the new study,  compared the performance of Li-ion batteries made with electrodes composed of lithium nickel nitride (LiNiN) to conventional Li-ion batteries containing carbon electrodes. The new materials are more efficient than the conventional electrodes and less likely to overheat, the researchers suggest ( for example Ni-MH  JVC BN-V22U never overheat). They note that "further improvements can be envisaged by changing the reaction conditions and the processing of the electrode." The folks over at Gizmodo managed to get their hands on some interesting news about the upcoming thinkpad lineup from lenovo. What does Lenovo have planned for the future? How about DDR3, Blu-ray, and WiMAX ... and those are just for starters! Let's take a look. The most interesting news is that the popular X300 will get three new siblings: the 12-inch X200, the 14.1-inch X400 and the 15.4-inch X500 (all featuring 45nm Penryn processors). Now road warriors can buy an ultra-thin laptop with any display size they prefer. The X-series will also feature HSDPA and EVDO, 25% improved battery life, and 6MB L2 cache. That's enough to make even non-ThinkPad fanboys jealous. If the new additions to the X-series aren't enough to get you excited, Gizmodo also leaked news about the rest of the new ThinkPad lineup: R400 and R500 Just as it is today, the R-series will continue to serve as the entry level ThinkPads. Apple and Sony settle with battery burn victims

Remember that who used Apple notebook and Sony notebook over one of those famous burning batteries? Well it looks like the companies have decided to settle, and will pay the fire-damaged pair a total of ¥1.3 million (or around $13,000). Of course, this is a bit less than the absurdly low $16,700 the two were asking, but percentage-wise they didn't make out too badly. During the trial, Apple  apparently accepted responsibility for the incident but couldn't justify settling out of court due to a request for "excessive compensation," while Sony maintained its distance by suggesting a link between the battery and burns wasn't clear. We're sure the guy who made the trip to the hospital thinks otherwise.
