For Better or Purse
2008-04-30 00:00:00 How does updating your wardrobe, eating yummy cupcakes and supporting a fabulous charity sound? If so, read on for our interview with Carla Clark the brains behind For Better or Purse, a charity and cupcake friendly swap event located in Melbourne Tell us a bit about how For Better or Purse came about? For Better Or Purse is a monthly event designed to help you make new friends, get some new clothes and contribute to making this world a better place. Inspired by the idea that swap meets can be more than junk and sneakers, Carla Clark decided to start a swap meet for fashionistas in Melbourne. Buying new clothes all the time is costly and bad for our environment, so why not facilitate swapping between strangers? Already a practice between best friends and sisters, all we needed was a little encouragement. Like marriage vows, the idea for this event is to come away with something you like better or to fatten the purse of our charity, the International Women's Development Agency. ...

Cult Beauty Review: Nars Orgasm Blush
2008-04-24 00:00:00 Continuing on my quest to personally get around to sampling and reviewing all these 'cult classic' beauty buys I've been hearing about for years, I've finally purchased Nars blush in Orgasm. I've heard a lot about this product. It's supposed to be THE perfect blush - suiting all complexions, matching all other makeup and generally being the perfect halfway point between peach and pink with the tiniest bit of shimmer to make you glow. I bought the original powder version of this blush, simply because I already have two stain blushes and I thought I could use one with this consistency. I've heard critics of Orgasm claim that it's too sheer and too glittery, but on my exceptionally pale one-shade-darker-than-liquid-paper skin it's neither. On the contrary if anything, it has a tendency to go on a little heavy, but I'm a blush kind of girl and I find that quite manageable. On the other hand, I'm pretty shimmer/glitter sensitive so I was fairly apprehensive about applyin... More About: Beauty , Review , Cult , Blush

Nivea Caregloss & Shine
2008-04-17 00:00:00 Apologies for the post hiatus, but I'm currently in the process of moving countries again and it's not pretty. Anyway, I'm rather pleased to tell you about Nivea Caregloss & Shine - it's a nifty little product, with the consistency of a lipbalm, but the finish of a gloss. Slightly sticky, but not 'adhere your lips together House of Wax style' sticky - rather a 'stay on for a while' type sticky. Better yet, as the name suggests - it's actually good for your lips, having similar moisturising properties as lipbalm. t's not coloured, as far as I can tell, and has a scent that my colleague tells me smells like sherbert and my fiance tells me tastes like 'lollies or something'. Probably a lot better than some of the alternatives out there! Packaging is similar to Lancome's Jucy Tubes, but this puppy is a fraction of the price, at around $6. What's not to like? BB
Mid Heel Mary Jane Court Shoes
2008-04-16 00:00:00 Recently I decided I wanted some Mary Jane heels but have been holding back on pre-research. This is mostly because in my last attempt at trying to fit my clothes and shoes into my wardrobe I came across heaps of shoes that I haven't actually worn (Seriously, six pairs). But I've found the cutest bargain pair, so shoe ban be damned. It all started with my RSS reader. One of the many fabulous blogs I subscribe to is Shoewawa , which is an awesome blog all about gorgeous shoes (except for ugly shoe day which is really funny). Visit Shoewawa and read the full post here Anyhow, here are the shoes in question. Not a fan of the Topshop colour or price (50 pounds) but am loving the exact same shoe in Target in an absolute multitude of colours for $19.99US So I got the red after a big internal debate about whether black would be more practical, but then decided that ... Cheap Thrills - Basic Long Cardi
2008-04-07 00:00:00 The setting: Its this time last year. I'm randomly shopping one day (I know, we're all gasping with shock here) not needing something urgently, just having a browse. I decide to check out Supre, not a store I normally like. Its too loud, too crowded and makes me feel old (possibly because I am older than thirteen). But Shopping Commandment #2 states: Thou shalt occasionally step outside thy shopping boundaries. Here lies the path to random finds and not becoming stuck in a rut. So somehow within the bad lighting I spotted this cardi to the left. Not too thick for Autumn. Thin enough to be worn over longsleeved tops in Winter without adding bulk. Can be worn with or without a belt (I generally wear mine without). And only $35AUD. I picked one up in a dark grey, the theory being grey goes with pretty much everything. Now you know how sometimes you pick up a cheap thrill, not expecting much from it and a few months later you look back and realise its become an integral part ... Paying Your Price with Price Pinx
2008-04-04 00:00:00 I realised recently there is a shopping habit I have. I spot an item on the racks and as I head towards it I'm mentally toting up what I think the price will be. If its well below or on the money (and I'm pretty good at picking it!) I generally try it on. If its over, I then go into to 'How-much-do-i-like-you' mode. And I generally have a list of 'When its on sale I will buy it' items. Of course, if I am not on the ball I can end up missing out altogether, which is why I am liking Price !Pinx Price!pinx is a nifty website which lets you track the items your planning on buying when they are on sale. This might just be old favourites that you want to stock up on, those items that you think are overpriced - and they can come from ANY website. To use Price!Pinx, all you do is sign up for an accout (free) and then install a bo...

Yet Another Outlet Centre for Melbourne
2008-03-29 00:00:00 I was interested to hear last week that Melbourne will be the new home of yet another outlet centre, with Harbourtown to open in late 2008. According to the Docklands Waterfront website, the future home of the complex, the Melbourne Harbourtown will have 90 outlet stores and over 100 full priced retail stores. Now, although I don't think all the stores in DFO are outlets as I've previously said , I'm still looking forward to a new outlet store, although damned if I can think of any stores that we don't already have. On a recent visit to QLD Harbourtown, the only store that really got me excited was the Lisa Ho outlet and that was mostly the Third Millenium stock. Given the very sad state of the David Jones Warehouse, I can't even begin to get excited about that (Its where old battered stock goes to die whilst still trying to cling to its overpriced price tag). Other than that, I found Harbourtown to have very similar stores to the three existing DFO centres. So give me som... More About: Centre , Outlet
Custom Designed Shoes
2008-03-25 00:00:00 One question I get asked on a regular basis,by those that know about my shopping and customised goods fetishes, is where can I get custom made shoes online? Now the answer to this is a bit tricky. True custom designed shoes cannot really be done over the internet since they really require a proper fitting of your foot. But if you want to personalise some shoes - well then I can offer some suggestions! The downside? None of the stores listed below are Australian, but quite a few do ship internationally...just keep in mind that personalised shoes don't come cheap, nor can they be delivered within a week - so make sure you leave plenty of time to order if you want them for a specific occasion. Steve Madden Now we've talked about the design your own feature on the Steve Madden site before , so I won't go into too much detail here. I had trouble accessing this feature in the last week, so I hope they haven't stopped doing it! ... More About: Shoes , Custom
Melb Girls: Landes Sale Store
2008-03-25 00:00:00 One of my favourite stores for cheap thrills, Landes, has a sale store open in Melbourne at the moment. Now, in my excitement, I didn't get the address, but its on Swanston St, towards Melbourne Central end (It used to be an Episode store). Its on the same side of the street as Melbourne Central, and has a big Landes sign in the window. Stockwise, there were heaps of basic tees and singlets from Ladakh, Minkpink and the like, all priced 10-20. I did see a few slogan tees, but as I was supposed to be working and not shopping didnt take a good look. There was a rack of dresses for $10 and a few other dresses from Mink Pink and Ladakh for $20 (not as many dresses as tops). Its mostly summer stock that I saw. Now, I'm not sure how long its open for, but do remember its cash only, and the sales assistants will really like you if you don't need a bag for your purchased goodies. I was stoked because I picked up a cute white dress with black embroidery for $20! More About: Girls , Sale , Store
Borders and Plastic Bags
2008-03-24 00:00:00 As I am assuming most of us did, last week I took advantage of the Borders 40% off coupon and stocked up on some books. As I paid for them, the sales assistant asked me if I would like bag - and then proceeded to charge me for the plastic bag. And I'm not happy about this. Now, before continuing, let me state that I don't have a problem at all with the reduction in plastic bag use. Its a good thing. I take my coles green bags the supermarket, I'm a big fan of a big handbag and am generally happy to pop my shopping in it, in favour of a plastic bag. But I'm also a booklover. And I like my books to look as new. Allegations of book nazisim have been levelled towards me in the past, however my response is that the librarian didn't teach us in primary school to bend our pages, cock the spines of our books, write in them, or (my personal pet hate) folder the cover over backwards whilst reading. Think about it, you wouldn't treat your clothes or shoes like that, why shou... More About: Bags , Plastic
Easter Weekend Discount Codes
2008-03-21 00:00:00 One of the many good things about Public Holidays (aside from the wonderful time off work) these days is that many an online store decides to throw a discount code our way. This is especially great given that the shops will mostly be closed tomorrow and Sunday. I actually really like Good Friday these days. I thank technology for this. When I was a kid, my mum always watched the Good Friday Appeal. A wonderful concept that we should all be spending a few minutes making a donation too tomorrow, but god, please don't make me watch how many b-grade celebs Channel 7 can roll out. Hence, Foxtel is a beautiful thing (So is owning the complete Veronica Mars DVD box set, which I plan on giving a run tomorrow. God love Veronica). The second technological invention I thank on Good Friday, is of course, the Internet. No longer is Good Friday and Easter Sunday and deathly boring day where no shopping can be achieved. So without further ado, here's a few discount codes for the long weeken... More About: Weekend , Discount , Codes
Here's To Brown
2008-03-18 00:00:00 I don't know why, but I always rather dismissed brown mascara as something old, dowdy or a bit hippyish women wore. Fairly silly when you think about it: 1. Black as a colour doesn't particularly suit me (doesn't stop me from owning a black coat and a few black suits, mind you) 2. Brown mascara is about the shade of chocolate anyway, so it's not like it's a heap lighter than black Despite this, it's taken me ten years of wearing black mascara (excluding the time I worked in cosmetics where I went through a stage of wearing purple, red and blue... erm, not all at the same time!) to work out that, in actual fact, brown mascara looks about thirty times better on me than black. My hair is brown, my eyebrows are brown and unsuprisingly, my eyelashes are brown. Contrary to my previous misconceptions, brown mascara does not look make me look unmadeup. It doesn't clash when I'm wearing black eyeliner or black clothes and moreover, it actually doesn't scream 'brown' when I...
Great Ebay Vintage Clothing Resource
2008-03-18 00:00:00 For lovers of vintage clothing, the other week I came across a great resource at My Vintage Connection. It's a listing of highly rated (read: only those with good feedback) vintage ebay stores, which changes on a daily basis. Even better for us aussies, all the stores listed ship internationally. There are 30 stores listed on the site at any given time, and with each store being quite large, thats going to kill quite a few hours on a daily basis :) One of the ones that I really like was Lullie , simply because it let me shop by size (hate seeing something gorgeous and realising there is no way I will fit into it!) And if your boy is a fellow vintage lover, they also have him sorted with links to Mens Vintage stores also. Visit My Vintage Connection More About: Clothing , Great , Ebay , Resource

Play Fashion Stylist with Polyvore
2008-03-14 00:00:00 One of the great eternal questions for shopaholics when shopping is 'What will I wear this with?' There is no point having a wardrobe full of beautiful clothes that can't be worn together. So a rather neat little website that will help you fit any future purchases (or even just your current wardrobe) together is Polyvore. Polyvore is your online fashion scrapbook. You can pull together outfits using any picture you can find to create your ultimate outfit using the very simple drop and drag editor (shown below). There are a couple of features that really sold me on the polyvore editor. Firstly, once you've dropped your image in, you can actually resize them. So for example, the chanel necklace to the right was a lot bigger when I dropped it, so I resized it to make it a bit smaller. Secondly, and this is really cool, wondering if that full ski... I've Found It!
2008-03-11 15:00:00 I've found it... the holy grail... the one reasonable use for Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. You may recall I posted a little while ago about how Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream is the world's most useless cult beauty product . Luckily, I've found a good use for it. So, if you've got a tube of it you're wondering how you're ever going to use up, here's a recipe for you: 2 x SOLUBLE aspirin tablets (this is the kind that dissolves when you put it in water). I suggest 'Solprin' - it's cheap! Smidge of Eight Hour Cream Few droplets of water One other ingredient - TBA In a little dish of some sort (I use the cap for a tin), mix your aspirin tablets with a couple of water droplets. And I do mean a couple. You want the aspirin to turn into a paste, not into something you could conceivably drink. To this mixture, you'll add your smidge of eight hour cream and another ingredient. Now, you're going to put this stuff on your face as a masque for about 20 mins. Your my...

Red Bag Phase
2008-03-08 00:00:00 I seem to have developed a fetish for red bags lately. I don't know why, and yes, I bought one last week. But in true shopaholic style, I've found a new red bag to replace my now bought lemming. The Dooney and Bourke Hayden Bag US$500 love this bag, but not the price tag. Plus I'd probably want to take the HP off so that I don't get asked if it was a HP promo bag (if only IT companies gave out promos that looked like this!) or if its a Harry Potter Bag. Stockings That Give You Skinnier Legs
2008-03-04 15:00:00 Okay folks. I have here what may just be the best 'beauty' product ever. The subject of this post says it all. Wear the stockings, get skinnier legs. I wouldn't have believed it myself unless I'd tried it, but I've been wearing them a week now and the results say it all. The premise is simple: infuse caffeine into stockings and your skin absorbs it during the day. I'm sure you've all heard a zillion times that caffeine invorates your skin and can help with circulation, smoothing and moving cellulite. Linda Evangelista once claimed that she kept cellulite at bay by taking a handful of coffee beans and rubbing her thighs with them. Well hey, now you don't have to do that (erm, if you ever did). Skinkiss Caffeine Tights will do it for you. Okay, so they're not cheap (about $80 for a pack of 3) and you need to wear them pretty much every day, but they DO work. I measured my thighs at the beginning of last week, and they were 58cm around at their very widest point. I ... More About: Stockings , Legs , Give
