Furnishing on a Budget

My number one resource was Craigslist – living in Los Angeles, there’s a high volume of used furnishings posted and if you sift through the rubble, there’s often one or two amazing finds a week. The trick is to know exactly what you want, and look everyday until you find it – and then snatch it up as quickly as possible so nobody else gets it first. My big purchase was a couch – I knew I wanted microsuede, so that made my searches a little less overwhelming. I also searched “new” so that I would pull up postings that said the couches were new or like new. Experiment a little. I also got an amazing West Elm dining table and chairs for less than 50% retail and they were used maybe five times. The previous owner was moving, and they were too expensive to ship. Bargains do exist, you just have to search. If you don’t have the good fortune to live in a big city where great used furniture is in abudance, Ebay is a similar and also great resource. When I moved into my studio a few months ago, I found myself searching in vein for a comprehensive resource that I could consult for help with decorating, organizing, and enjoying my new smaller space.
