DATE DOCTOR EDITION: Deal or No Deal
2007-09-21 15:15:00
So you got the number and are ready to make that call. Now what? Will he or she say "deal" or "no deal?"I have been on my fair share of first dates prior to finding my dreamboat, so I have a lil' bit of expertise in this area...This is an example of what NOT to do on a first phone call before the date (this is a true story):Him: So, what do you like to do?Me: Well, I love to loiter in museums, sneak into movies for free, and excessively sample fruit and veggies in supermarkets.Him: So you wanna come over to my condo?Needless to say, this date died an excruciatingly painful death before it could ever come into fruition...no deal! Here are some general guidelines to how to close the deal:Do discuss your general interests. I know this seems basic, but, let's keep it very real, during 99% of the first convo, you are really most concerned about how that person looks sans clothing. It's mighty hard to concentrate on what your new person is saying while daydreaming about playing nekk...

Party Like A Rock Star: How to Act Like You Know How to Taste Wine Edition
2007-09-18 16:08:00
I have to go to a few chi-chi-poo-poo parties this week, so I had to update my wine tasting skills. I can't order Pinot Grigio forever and I'm tired of hearing people ordering White Zinfandel and think that they are stepping it up a notch. For those who want to upgrade their dining and wining etiquette, swish this around in your mouth and swallow:Directly excerpted from The Wine DoctorHow to Taste Wine Wine, especially that for which you have paid a premium, is worth more than a quick swallow. So perhaps this section should be entitled 'Wine Appreciation', because there is a lot more to judging the quality of a wine than just tasting it. Predominantly it involves smell, using that organ which protrudes from the front of the face just above the mouth. Despite this simple fact, however, many regard those that know enough to swirl and sniff their wine as pretentious wine 'snobs'. But this is not the case. This is how to get the best out of a bottle, and I do it with ever...

Just to prove that I actually went to NYC Fash ion Week ....enjoy! Plus, I have to take the boys to the doctor for physicals and shots as well as return a truckload (Hummer, that is--my hubby's mistress--I swear if he could marry that truck, he would..) of items from a magazine shoot yesterday, so more posts will come this evening after a few consultations...WARNING: I may look sweaty or shiny or a combination of both--a sista was working the events!Mary J. 2007 Emmy Awards Best Dressed List and a Few Extras....
2007-09-17 15:19:00
I only watched a few seconds of the 2007 Emmys, but I caught a glimpse of Vanessa Williams' dress and knew that she would be on my best dressed list. This woman, even through some scandalous pictures and even more scandalous husbands, always manages to look completely fab! She is soooo my beauty role model.....Anyways, I have to prepare for a photoshoot in B-more, so I "borrowed" (wink, wink) these pictures from Red Carpet Style Awards . I do not possess even a scintilla of the creativity that it takes to arrange the headshots and body shots....hence the pictures seen on this post marching very neatly in a vertical single file line....Here are my top picks of the night:1. America FerreraShe certainly wears blue very well. I love the way that the belt creates a waistline. It gives definition and accentuates her curves well.2. Vanessa WilliamsI love the feathers. Only true divas can pull this look off....3. Ellen PompeoOk, I LOOOVE Grey's Anatomy, but that's not why I picked...

Okay...since everyone one is abuzz about this list--I might as well discuss it. I normally don't do the "best" lists because they are highly media driven--we common folk usually have an entirely different idea of who looks the "best"....According to People , these female celebs rock the best looks:Beyonce-The ShowstopperCameron Diaz- The LegsKatie Holmes-The ClassicPenelope Cruz-The ContinentalJessica Biel-The All AmericanDrew Barrymore- The ChameleonJennifer Lopez- The Glamour GirlReese Witherspoon- The SophisticateGwen Stefani-The TrendsetterAli Larter- The NewcomerFor once, I actually agree with this list. The only one at which I wince slightly is Beyonce...her everyday normal is sometimes off-kilter, but she definitely knows how to bring a room to a standstill while performing. Just for that reason, and for that reason only, can she remain on the list in my head. No mention of the House of Do-Me-Wrong here....There was a much more interesting list that I would LOOOVE to di...

MAN DAY: The Haute Couture Edition
2007-09-12 18:01:00
Firstly, I must apologize for taking such a long break. But, I must warn you, from time to time, I will have to take some break for work purposes.Secondly, instead of showing all of the pictorials of the shows (plus, I really don't have the time to do it), I will showcase some highlights (I almost shudder as I write this) of a few of the many shows. If you want a more in-depth look at the Spring 2008 fashions shown here, check out the designers official websites.Thirdly, I had to change the colors--it was getting too difficult for me to read my own posts..curse these over-30 eyes!Let's get started!DieselI had fun at this show. It was a throwback to 80s apparel and I was feeling right at home. I know that some of you men remember wearing skinny jeans...they weren't just for the ladies....However, I found some looks to be just downright disturbingI mean, unless you are going to be dropping it like it's hot as a Chippendales dancer, this ensemble need not be in your style reper...

MAN DAY: What to Wear to the Club
2007-09-05 18:02:00
Sorry guys, I am on my way to NYC--no original content here. I do have a most suitable substitute: Be Better Guys! For some great advice on what to wear to the club, check out this article by Brian Joyner: What to Wear When: Club Hopping Written by Brian Joyner It’s Friday night, things are popping all over town. You’re heading out with the fellas/ your crew/ your posse (does anyone actually use that expression anymore?), or maybe it’s you and your girlfriend/wife/someone you want to be your girlfriend or wife. You want to look right and you want to be comfortable. Your clothes make a statement about you and it'll be obvious to everybody if you aren’t comfortable in you gear. Wear what's considered "club-appropriate." The last thing you want is the bouncer stopping you because you're dressed like K Fed while letting your boys or you lady head inside for a sla...

Style File: Fall 2007 Absurd Shoe Edition
2007-09-04 13:00:00
I found this swanky assortment of shoes among the Fall 2007 line up at Barneys. Here are my astute observations:1. Miu Miu Anklestrap Mary Jane: I am not a fan of any flat shoe at all. This shoe looks like an episode of "When the Glue Gun Went Wrong." Huge rhinestones on my tippy toes does not a diva make. I believe that a woman's legs look best in a pair of high heels--the higher, the better! What's the purpose of woman's leg is her calf isn't pumped up past sexy? I only wear flat shoes on my bad days---my very, very, bad days. But, if you like flats, you do you...you are certainly not dressing for me. If you spend ALL your time caring what others think about you, it's a waste of time. Besides, when I see you, I will only be concerned if you noticed my fabulousity!2. Marc Jacobs Cuffed Wedge Boot: Okay--why do I want to wear a boot that looks like a mini-me of a pant leg. And, white suede at that? To top it off, it looks like you're wearing opaque tights with a w...

Tips on Style from Victoria Beckham
2007-08-30 16:00:00
Of course, you all know that I absolutely adore Victoria Beckham . Apart from keeping a strongly held belief that she should eat more than once a day, I think that she is absolutely fabulous! 3 kids, 1 mega-husband, and a budding fashion line....this woman is definitely on the move. In my daydreams, I am the black Posh---I just need to add one more kid to the repetoire! Here's an excerpt from her new book, That Extra Half an Inch. I was a bit surprised, there are actually some really good tips. I shouldn't have been, though...look at her! You can find the original article here in the LA Times.A sneak peek from That Extra Half an Inch, Victoria Beckham's style guide. It was published in Britain last year; a U.S. release is planned soon. But for now, put up your "Party Feet" and listen up. • Looking effortless is actually fashion code for "this involved lots of thought," and it's a tragic truth that this generally is the best strategy. • However you're built, be mindful ...

MAN DAY: Booted and Suited
2007-08-29 17:12:00
Welcome to MAN DAY! First let me preface this by telling you that NONE of the information below was written by me. I straight jacked it from Be Better Guys...It's okay, I happen to be acquainted with the owners....so it's alright, it's okay....I would have written a similar post, but today is a truly hectic day. I am in the midst of preparing for NYC Mercedes Benz fashion week, working on some new projects, organizing some photoshoots, meeting new clients, and preparing for my oldest son to come home from summer vacation.....and that just describes my responsibilities until mid-morning....Anyways, now that I have properly vented, feel free to enjoy this breathtaking and refreshing article below. MAN DAY: the man bag lives on
2007-08-08 15:30:00
Today's MAN DAY topic took me completely by surprise. Please follow this exchange I had with a male fabulite associate of mine for more details:Me: So you carry a purse, eh?Him: It's not a purse. It's my carrying bag.Me: Oh--so it's a man purse?Him: No. It is what I use to carry my important items.Me: Like what?Him: My wallet, my phone, my, iPod, my important papers...Me: (I cut him off) What happened to your pockets and a briefcase?Him: I don't like to look bulky.Me: What in the man-bag hell are you talking about? You have a manbag!Him: Whatever. As long as you don't call it a purse.Me: OHHHH--so you're a metrosexual....Him: Did you just call me a homosexual? The conversation then wandered off into an unnecessary convo about his "manhood." I just wanted to know if dude was carrying a purse or not....Anyway you put it, the man purse, oh, excuse me, manbag, is still on the rise. No longer confined to the celebrity crowd (see examples of the uber fine David Bec...

Party like a rock star...
2007-08-07 18:56:00
Even though our mid-summer night dreams have long approached and passed us by,it's not too late to dazzle and sizzleor add a simple touch of eleganceand provide a decadent and demulcent (you might need to look that one up, it's my word of the day!) atmosphere to have the party of the summer! Here's a step by step guide to have the most talked about 'intimate' soiree of the summer--make those who weren't invited covet an invite and did attend have "what happens here, stays here" memories....1. It's all about location, location, location. Ponder carefully over where you want to hold your summer soiree. To keep it intimate and under crowd control, it's best to party at home or some fabulous place with a medium outdoor garden patio. Choose your location at least 3-4 weeks in advance. Regardless of whether it's in your home, a local hot spot, or the beach, you need to prepare each setting. Instant upgrade: rooftop patio party.2. Choose your theme. Just melt your frustrations away...From style.comLove the feel of a refreshing steam bath but hate sharing the experience with strangers? European home design company Ideal Standard has an elegant solution: this three-in-one sauna, hammam, and shower. No bigger than a well-appointed closet, the mini rejuvenation cabin is just the right size for one person, but we don't think there'd be any harm in testing it out with two. At $20,000, it isn't cheap, but who can put a price on uninhibited well-being? Fendi--the new take on the convertible mini...There is nothing I like more than a convertible....bag that is. Fendi accessories designer Silvia Venturini has created the seventies-inspired To You bag. For whatever occasion that you even dream of, this bag can be utilized. MAN DAY: "Pretty bracelets that tell time..."
2007-08-01 14:31:00
First let me apologize for the late posts---my home Internet was acting up. After a lengthy but helpful convo with Comcast, all is well....Now on to MAN DAY.....I was speaking to a gentleman friend and he asked me the time. I kindly looked at my timepiece and told him. I then asked, "Where is your watch?" (He was a fellow attorney who did pretty well for himself--he really had no excuse) He said that he didn't need a watch because he used his cell phone to tell time. He then told me, "Watches are now useless. They are basically pretty bracelets that tell time."Hmmm, okay.....I completely disagree. I am an ardent proponent of complete personal branding--meaning that you have to distinguish yourself in order to get noticed---and for men, the watch is a major part of that total look. Here are some watches that may need to be included in your style swagger. Since you all know about the Rolexes and Audemars Piguets, let me introduce you to some non-rap lyric watches. I'll go fr...

Weekend Wrap Up--Thank you Lord!
2007-07-31 16:27:00
And fun was had by all....This weekend was chock full of Christian loving and style. I had the unique opportunity to assist with wardrobe styling with the Dr. Bobby Jones Gospel show at the BET studios in Washington, DC (thanks to Genevieve Nixon, uber producer!). I had the pleasure of meeting premiere gospel artists (Tonex, Mighty Clouds of Joy, Wess Morgan, Ricky Dillard, Canton Jones, Shirley Murdock, Lexi, Shirley Ceaser, Karen Clark-Sheard, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, to name a few) and Dr. Bobby himself. His choir, the Nashville Super Choir, was an awesome group of vocalists who hailed from the great gospel families of legend (Pace sisters, etc.) Not much too commentary---it was a wonderful weekend and I was able to learn from some great wardrobe stylists (Tanya Bailey of BET and Shelly of Image 7 Studio),meet the gospel greats, and network, network, network! Date Doctor Edition (for men only, but ladies, please pass along!)
2007-07-27 15:55:00
I have had a few requests to give some dating tips to the menfolk (actually, I was accused of being bias because I am married). I am really still a newlywed in my mind, so I still feel a bit in touch. To be fair to all, here is some fruit from the tree of life for the men in your lives:1. Women do care about how much money you make and your credit score (regardless of what they tell you), but they don't want you to splash them with dollar-dollar bills or rain on them when you first meet. Not only is it super duper pretentious, but it makes it look like you think the woman is a gold digger. If she turns you down, don't be surprised. If she takes up an offer, I'm not saying she's a gold digger, but she don't mess with no broke...2. Please, please, please check your hygiene before you high step it over to us. Funky breath, body odor, or cologne does not sit well with us. If we lurch forward because your funky self has come close, it's not so we can get closer...we are trying to p...

MAN DAY--Survivor Mode

MAN SURVIVAL KIT I always get EXTREMELY irritated when I meet a man and one of the following happens:1. He has bad breath..like a small pet just up and died in his mouth2. His off-the-rack clothes fit very poorly (either he has on smedium or double double XXL)3. His odor overpowers my sense of smell and nearly renders me unconscious4. He has stains on the most vital parts of his clothing...what was HE doing before?5. He has the "ashy Larry " syndrome--meaning white knuckles, chapped hands, dry face, cracked skin, unforgiveable ash on legs, etc.As according to my hubby, this is your MAN survival kit (keep it with you at all times--car, briefcase, manbag, i.e. wherever it is handy and accessible):Keep in mind that I am referring to small containers of the following items... Unlike the pure disdain that I have for high-waisted mom jeans, I am loving the return of the doorknocker earrings (as immortalized in the classic "Round the Way Girl " by LL Cool J). Celebs like Hilary Duff, Rihanna, Bey, Cassie, and Fergie have become addictive fans of the look. You can glam up or glam down most outfits with these fun, decorative hoops. I have a few pair myself--peep the profile pic below!See how your favorite celebs rocked the look:Hillary DuffRihannaCassieLily AllenBeyonceYou can buy Hilary's pair from CC Skye here or a pair like Rihanna's here or like Fergie's hereORyou just go to your neighborhood flea market (like I did) and purchase them for $7.99!
