Some Simple But Cute Tees!
2008-01-04 01:58:00
I just have to say that I love JCrew's ringspun cotton! It's textured & soft, & just feels great to wear! Here are some of the latest incarnations in ringspun cotton:Striped ringspun cotton teeYou may recall that, earlier in the season, they also carried a very similar, long-sleeve version of this ringspun cotton shirt, the Regatta boatneck long-sleeve tee, pictured below:The main difference is of course, that the stripes in the above shirt are a tad bit wider. ;-)Here are some more ringspun cotton offerings:Ringspun cotton vintage ad teeWhile these cotton tees are surely very soft, I personally don't like the prints they chose. I get that it's supposed to be vintage ads, but I guess I just don't like the particular ads they chose. The Orange ad reminds me too much of a Tang commercial. And I don't really want to be wearing an ad for "seedless raisins" as it reminds me too much of the California grapes' ad. ;-) That's just me.Plus, I think I've just seen one too...

Booya for Beautiful Blouses!
2008-01-04 01:18:00
OK, after that acerbic little post I just wrote, time to write about some things that I like. So, I'm going to highlight some of the beautiful blouses that JCrew is doing this season. Take a look:Polka-dot Daphne blouse (pictured here in color "deep violet")In the store, they also carry this print in other colors like bright flame (a dark-red orange color), etc.Solid Daphne blouseWhile in my last post I ragged on JCrew for their choice of a flat-chested model who was ill-suited to show of this blouse to its best advantage, I do actually like the blouse itself! I'd recommend this blouse only if you are atleast a B cup or larger.Tangiers-print Phoebe blouseThis printed blouse comes in two colors, the bright flame color you see pictured here & in black.I tried on all of the above blouses & can personally attest to their beauty & excellent fit.One note on the fit of the Phoebe blouse, pictured immediately above: While I'm normally either a 2 or 4 in blouses (depending ...

The Daphne Blouse: A Case For Using Bustier Models!
2008-01-03 21:18:00
Need I say more?Probably not, but I will. ;-)Look very closely at this photo.Plainly put, this model in this photo looks horrible in this blouse! Somewhere in the world little lemmings are jumping off of cliffs in despair. And who knows, it could've been from one look at this very photo.Well maybe they should've sent the photoshoot's stylist overboard. ;-)This is one style of blouse where you NEED a larger bust (than the one shown here!) to fill out the blouse. Otherwise, it looks like something's missing. As every fashionista knows, where one's body is concerned, it's best to face reality, consider what styles fit & flatter your assets, & then follow suit accordingly. So then why, oh why, did they choose this particular model to display this blouse? They should've chosen a model with breasts or atleast added some chicken fillets.JCrew, please, in this one instance, give us a model that properly fills out this blouse! You probably wouldn't show a D cup model in a ...

Good Customer Service Makes All The Difference!
2007-12-24 21:47:00
I just got off the phone with Pam from JCrew customer service, who was very helpful & offered to call me to follow up on my gift card situation (i.e., see previous post for details). Apparently, the people in support services weren't aware that the third gift card needed to be applied to my order for some reason, even though the gift card was clearly listed on the order, so she followed up to make sure this was taken care of properly.Without prompting, she promised to give me a follow-up call & also offered free express shipping on the remaining waitlisted items, since I'd had so much trouble with this order. That made me a lot happier. 8-)She also said that she'd notate the order with stars for extra emphasis; I asked if there was some way that staff who work on order processing could be prompted with a pop-up window or some other flag that would make them aware of special instructions on orders, so that they would first need to look at the notation before being able t...

Fit Models, Some Order Screw-Ups, + A Leather-Bound Datebook
2007-12-24 15:51:00
'Tis the season, for customer appreciation, harried Grinch-like shoppers, & even more harried JCrew staff attempting to fulfill zillions of orders. ;-)Before I launch into an explanation of the above, I'd like to say a brief word about fit models. Why in heaven's sake am I talking about fit models? Well, it might be useful for you to know that, when it comes to jackets, dresses, & tops (tees, blouses, etc.), that JCrew generally designs apparel using models with B-cup bra size. So, if you happen to have a smaller or larger bustline, please adjust accordingly. On this note, I have one other useful tip: If you are unsure about a garment's fit, whether it be tops, bottoms, dresses, or anything else, you can always ask the JCrew sales rep to give you the exact measurements. This is one area in which they usually have loads of specific information, unlike many other apparel companies out there. This makes me jump for joy(!), as this information not only really helps to d...

Don't Judge A Print By Its Photo ;-)
2007-12-16 13:47:00
A meme is a meme is a meme is a meme. And I reserve the right to change my mind. 8-)I have to say that this season's prints have grown on me a bit since my last rant on this topic. Mostly, because I was basing my opinion purely on a photo or two & hadn't yet seen some of these prints in person. In particular, I'd like to revise what I said about the botanical green print & the splatter dot print. After seeing these prints in person, I have to say they look a lot more appealing. ;-)Yes, I know I said the botanical green print was hideous. & that the splash dot print left something to be desired, but after seeing it in person, it's actually kind of... (wait for it, wait for it...), .... cute! Gasp! What, exactly is going on here?Has my mind been transplanted to another galaxy or dimension by little tiny green men preying on my recent spate of fashion fickleness?! No, sorry to say, it's nothing that dramatic. It goes back to what I was saying earlier: It's hard ...

Fashionista-for-Hire: In Need Of Fashion Consulting Services? I'm The Lady
2007-12-14 16:58:00
Hello All,If you like my posts, check out my fashion consulting services! I currently offer fashion consulting services through my business, Ferlanti Couture. When you visit this website, you'll see that I am a fashion & accessories designer, who designs & creates original collections on a seasonal & annual basis. Currently, I sell couture jewelry & luxury goods, but am also looking to eventually expand into women's apparel.I've spent my whole life immersed in fashion. Quite literally. From the very time I first set foot in my maternal grandfather's beautiful women's clothing store, I've been surrounded by knowledgeable people in the world of retail. As a small child, I helped tag items & arrange clothing in the store, & my love of fashion has remained until this day. And now, through my retail fashion company, I enjoy helping people feel great about themselves through their clothing & accessories, & have a particularly keen eye for detail...

I've Found You, My Long Lost Friends ;-)
2007-12-10 20:51:00
Remember those dark green wellies with orange laces that JCrew used to offer in seasons past? Yes? No? Maybe so?! Well, I happened to come across a picture of them while I was looking through my fashion photo archive for other JCrew items from seasons past. And you know what? I still think they are cute. True, they are basic, & perhaps not as exciting as some of the printed wellies, but they are classic & get the job done. If I could only have one pair of them, I'd rather have a versatile color which I can wear with almost anything than a wild & crazy color or print that limits what I can wear with them.So JCrew if you're reading this, could you bring back this color in future seasons? I know you offered it in a plain unisex version called the "Hunter Wellington," but I also loved the version you did in the above picture. I'd recommend updated the boot a bit by using a contrasting color -- like yellow or orange -- for both the top trim, bottom rubber sidewall s...

Holiday Hits & Misses, Part 6: Sleepwear
2007-12-10 09:24:00
JCrew Sleepwear Review - Holiday 2007:While there's a remote part of my brain that's saying that the below items are actually cute, the other part of me is screaming in horror at the mere mention of that last thought & frankly desperately wants to sledge-hammer that part of me that just thought such a thing. So, I think I'll let that crazy notion fly right out of my brain before the two halves of my Gemini nature go to battle with one another & make a mockery of my normally sane style acumen, which generally points "true North" on the fashion compass. ;-)Well, dear reader, what do YOU think of the below fashion renderings of the holiday spirit? Do they scream "tacky" or "cute" in your ears? Or you as conflicted as I am over the above items? While I generally like to leave the Christmas fashion parodies to the world of Bridget Jones & Mr. Darcy's comical Christmas sweater, I can concede that the above items are not nearly as ridiculous. However, they might still be...

JCrew Skirt & Pants Review - Holiday 2007:Absolutely love (!) the tartan print sailor pants & slacks:The European café scene is better rendered in the skirt print (than the sweater), but I'm still not hugely excited about it.The below skirt doesn't make it for me either. What's "off" for me here is the arrangement of compositional elements that form the whole:Where it goes "wrong" for me is the top portion with the curvy orange color block & the writing descending from it. I don't object to the placement of the color block itself, but the hue doesn't mesh well with the other colors in the composition & the writing descending from it is oddly arranged & is awkward-looking. However, the skirt does improve as the eye travel downward to the hem. The trees & the red trim are much more attractive looking than the upper half of the skirt's arrangement of the geometric elements & their color composition. Then there's this really cute mini:While I probab...

JCrew Shirt & Sweater Review - Holiday 2007:OK, frankly, I'm getting a bit peaked from all of this nonstop writing, so I'm going to make the next few posts really brief. The below tops look really cute in the below photos, however when I tried them on in the store, they were a bit too short on the bottom & way too shapeless in the torso for my taste:I wish they were more fitted, then I would've bought the one pictured on the left, which I think is really darling. The below top is really stylish, both in the picture & in reality:The next top has a similar feel to it, in terms of color & construction, but if those horizontal stripes grab her in the photo in such an awkward way (& she's a skinny model mind you!), you can imagine what they must do to the average body when tried on in the store. In general, I would have to gather a guess that the wide sequined stripes aren't flattering to a large majority of the population. ;-)I like the idea of the below sweater,...

JCrew Dress Review - Holiday 2007:OK, here's one holiday dress that I think deserves to have the spotlight shone upon it:I love the print & the fabric. Well done, JCrew.Having said that, it's not a style I would probably wear, as A-line dresses aren't something that typically flatter my shape. I know the conventional wisdom about A-line dresses, but yes, there are some of us out there who actually don't look good in the A-line shape & I happen to be one of them. Most people's figure issues are that they need to create a waist-line, balance out their generous bustline, or hide a generous lower-half. Well, my top & bottom are proportional, & my waist happens to be the smallest part of my figure. So, while the A-line silhouette emphasizes my narrow waist, it does so at the expense of the lower-half of my body. I personally don't like dress shapes that balloon out at the hips, as I somehow feel like my backside is going to require its own separate zip code. ...

JCrew Accessories Review - Holiday 2007:OK, this is going to be a quickie-but-goodie:Here are a few of my favorite new accessories from JCrew:Like these two prints, but not too crazy about the "botanical green" print for a laptop case (see below). It looks like something out of a seventies nightmare that went totally awry. Sorry, make that a tacky sixties or seventies wallpaper print in a cheesy, outdated hotel room, which suddenly exploded all over a laptop case! ;-) Can't you just picture this psychedelic print plastered on the walls of the the Brady Bunch or Part ridge family's homes. Or maybe that should be the Ken Kesey's magic bus & how its passengers felt after one too many acid trips. ;-)I don't know exactly why, but this same print looks far less hideous as a wooden-frame purse:Somehow the idea translates better as a purse. I think it's the scale of the print that works better in this instance. Still, it's not a look I gravitate towards. On the other end of the ...

Wait! More New Shoes! And They're On Sale Now Too.....
2007-12-05 22:05:00
I know some people have been carping to me lately about JCrew's "outrageous" prices. A cotton union jack pajama suit for $69.50 does seem a tad bit pricey for most, but I will say this: I've noticed that you can often get items for less at the retail store locations. Merchandise will frequently go on sale because frankly, the stores have got to move their inventory to make room for the next latest & greatest items of the upcoming season. So, guess who benefits? You, the customer, that's who. But of course! If you don't have access to a retail store, there's always the seasonal online sales. And speaking of sales, I'd like to let everyone know about the current holiday sale going on at JCrew.com. While it's true that some items are only marginally discounted, other items are a steal, marked down to more than 50-60% off the original price! Here are some of my favorite shoes that're now on sale:Etta suede peep-toe wedges - Originally $165.00, now on sale for $69.99.Etta...

Holiday Hits & Misses, Part Two: A Shoe Review & Shopping Psycholog

Wow, so much to review, so little time. Literally. I've got another jewelry holiday trunk show to do this weekend, so suffice to say, I'm rather busy & really shouldn't be blogging. But after all, we all need to take a break now & then. So I choose to temporarily relieve stress via blogging. ;-)So, in the interest of time, I'm going to divy up my review into the following areas:(1) Shoe Review (One of my favorite topics! ;-) )(2) Accessories (As a jewelry & accessories designer myself, of course this is another favorite topic!)(2) Dresses(3) Tops (Shirts & Sweaters)(4) Bottoms (Skirts mostly this time)(5) SleepwearEach area will be a separate post.Yes, I do realize I skipped some categories (outerwear, jackets, pants, suiting, swimwear, etc.). OK, I'm baaaack, this time for another installment of "Hit or Miss," where I deliver no-nonsense reviews of the latest JCrew products. If you don't recall these earlier fashion review segments which went by the name of "Hit or Miss," it's not because you're going cuckoo or have possibly had your memory wiped by The Haitian from Heroes. Rather, I just decided to call them by this name about 5 seconds ago. ;-)Anyhoooo, let's get down the real business at hand: Fashion, specifically JCrew fashion. So here's my latest review of some of JCrew's more noticeable & eye-catching fashions:OK, first off, please note that the use of the above words "noticeable" & "eye-catching" can have either good or bad connotations. ;-)Having said that, let's dish. Or maybe that should be a dog dish. Yes, JCrew has it's new line of dog products called Crewmutts. (This is a rather obvious play on words of their other relatively "new" product line, Crewcuts. Mad About Plaid + Bella Coat On Sale Now!
2007-11-16 10:32:00
For those of you who loved the black & red checked cotton broadcloth Phoebe dress I described (in a previous post), it also comes in solid colors & now, most recently, in a new print, the "black watch tartan plaid."While I don't really care for the solid colors, the prints make me jump for joy! This time, the dress been re-interpreted in an allover navy, black, & green tartan print wool from Italy. It's gorgeous! Check it out:In general, I like how the dress is a fresh style we haven't seen before. The ruffled collar manages to be subtle & stylish but never prissy; the shape of the dress is different while still managing to be flattering; and, the style is cute without being too cutesy. The collar can stand up, and when worn this way, it gives the outfit a more regal "Mary, Queen of Scots" or "Elizabeth I" kind of feel.Accessories are very important in a dress like this. And they require careful consideration. There's ample décolletage to provide a nice canvas...

Shoe-Sizing Schizophrenia
2007-11-14 17:07:00
I tried on several pairs of shoes last night at the store. My favorites of the evening were the Erin suede peep-toe heels in the chili pepper color & the patent-leather Mary Janes in holiday red.Well, it appears that, after trying them on in the store, the Erin suede peep-toes I'd originally ordered from the catalog in size 8, (which were backordered until November 26th), are now going to be way too big. Apparently, I take a size 7 in this shoe. So I cancelled this backordered item & re-ordered the correct size. (They did have a 7 in another color, so I tried them on for sizing purposes.)Here's a picture of these shoes:This is also the case with the holiday-red, patent high-heeled Mary Janes. Here's a picture of those shoes:OK, this is really weird & frustrating. I thought I took an 8 in JCrew shoe sizes. So why do I take a 7 in their Erin peep-toes & Mary Janes? In their suede ballet flats & boots, I do take an 8. However, in some of their sandals I ta...

It's A Bird, It's A Plane! No, It's A Clown-Costume!
2007-11-13 12:56:00
While I like to think of myself as a fashion-forward gal, I do not ever want to dress in clothing that'd make me look like a clown. The below jacket, aptly named the "Cheshire Jacket" (for unintended comical reasons unforeseen by JCrew), would make Bozo's costume look good in comparison.JCrew, what were you thinking? Was some JCrew designer making clothes in a drunken rage, out of a desire to avenge his or her unpopular childhood?!!! [And were they forced to wear something that looked like this? ;-)]It looks like an egg had an accident, after being on a collision course with some milk toast & some Marimekko textiles!I know it's supposed to be an unusual, artistic statement, but I just can't wrap my head around it. And I'm usually fairly open-minded about fashion!I think what bothers me about it is that, while the outfit intends to be boho chic, it actually looks like it was instead slapped together haphazardly, without a lot of forethought. And worst of all, the colors &a...

A Word On JCrew Sizing
2007-11-13 01:27:00
OK, stay with me. As promised, I'll be giving you insight on sizing & fit at JCrew. Now of course there's the sizing chart on the website. But I'm going to let you in on a little secret. The sizing is a little bit more complicated than that. Now why would I say this?I tried on a zillion different things at the JCrew store & I can honestly tell you that while sizing is consistent there, it does vary with the different fits & styles of clothing. What do I mean by this exactly, you might ask? Well, here's where that nifty little example in my last post actually comes in handy. If you'll recall, I mentioned that I'm an hourglass, & a size 4. So, I will now detail how that translates into figuring out my sizes in various articles of clothing. Keep in mind that if you do not have an hourglass shape, the below sizing calculations I mention here might not apply to you.My biggest clothing issue/challenge is that pants typically gape in the waist, so I always need to ...

My Fashion Identity, In A Nutshell
2007-11-12 23:20:00
Hello There, Loyal Readers,Let me entertain you with another scintillating exploration into the world of fashion as I see it & thus, a view into my inner fashion psyche. So, for starters, let us first review the basic, semi-autobiographical, fashion-related facts about me, established thus far, which you may or may not know, depending on how regularly you frequent this blog:#1. I'm a discerning fashionista with a penchant for salsa. [I'm talking about the dance here, people, not the condiment! Well, I do like both, but only one goes well with JCrew apparel. ;-)]#2. Did I mention that I was an Olympic-medal-worthy marathon shopper? If the Olympic committee ever approves apparel shopping as an official Olympic sport, you can just send me to straight to the Olympic village, baby! You better believe I'd be a gold-medalist! Clothing shopping is like a bloodsport to me. Just ask my fiancé, Erik, about that, & he'll confirm it word for painstaking word. ;-)You see, it's no...

The Phoebe Dress Is Freakin' Fantabulous! Salsa The Night Away In This Hot
2007-11-10 02:36:00
I went out salsa dancing last night in the city with a bunch of friends (to celebrate a good friend's birthday) & wore the below dress, with black tights & black suede peep toe shoes. So here's how I styled the entire ensemble: As I like to put my own spin on a look, to "own" it & thus, make it uniquely mine, I mixed & matched JCrew pieces with some of my own original accessories, of which I created & designed myself. So, to properly accessorize the look, I wore a funky, vintage-inspired, one of a kind Ferlanti Couture necklace (I'll have to take a picture of it & post it here, so you can see it! It's made of black onyx beads & has a really unusual, white filagree, vintage pin at its center), a pair of red cinnabar earrings from Wildfire Designs, & some enameled bangles (also from JCrew) in a similar color palette. To mix it up a bit & make the fashion statement a bit more edgy & unexpected, I also wore a chic, silk-covered headband in a ...

The Most Flattering Pants Ever + A Word on How to Attain Chic-Casual Style
2007-11-05 22:16:00
Wow, two posts in one-day. Yes, when it rains, it pours. ;-)The focus of my next discussion will center on the attainment of chic-casual, "ready-to-wear" style, or, as it's better known in fashion industry parlance, prêt-à-porter. Just as the title implies, ready-to-wear clothing has a practical, off-the-rack fit.JCrew is a brand that really excels at this. I find I rarely, or if-ever, have to tailor something I buy from this store. The fit of their garments is exceptional. This of course is one of the many reasons why I love JCrew so much! ;-)So, not surprisingly, I'd like to highlight just a few of these spectacularly-fitting items from this season:The City-Fit Madison Stretch ChinoJCrew's city-fit Madison stretch chinos are bar-none, the best fitting style of pants I've ever worn. Ever.In general, the city-fit cut of pants are simply amazing, so when JCrew added a bit of stretch, I just knew it was going to be a good thing.First came my initial reaction after I trie...

Favorite Fall & Winter Patterned Sweaters: Argyle & Chains & Cr
2007-11-05 18:11:00
If you're looking for something snazzy to spice up your fall & winter wardrobe, there's nothing better than a fun & stylish print to put you in a good mood, to start your day off in the right direction!I particularly adore JCrew's lion cashmere critter tee:While you might not actually be headed for a rugby match at Eton or tea with the queen, there's certainly no harm in looking like you might! ;-)It's a very attractive sweater, which could just as easily go with a wool tartan-print mini (i.e., best left to the teenage & college-bound set) or knee-length kilt (i.e., appropriate for all ages), as it could with jeans or slacks.---------------------------------- --------------------------------Another fun favorite is the long-sleeved, cashmere argyle tee. This year, JCrew's doing three different kinds:There's the all-over argyle print, of which, the most versatile, wearable color, IMHO, is the black, white, & mushroom grey print:My only word of caution is this: ...
