This Weekend in Roller Derby (March 15)

From Phil Arnold:On Saturday, the Philly Roller Girls kick off their 2008 Season with a double-header bout featuring all three-league teams and a visiting team from the Carolina Roller Girls. The first bout will feature the Heavy Metal Hookers, against the Debutante Brawlers from the Carolina Roller Girls. Teflon Donna, a recent addition to the Hookers, will be playing against her former Carolina team. The second bout of the evening will be between the Broad Street Butchers and the Philthy Britches.All the action will take place at the Sportsplex, at 1331 O'Reilly Drive, in Feasterville, PA. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m., with the first bout starting at 7:00 p.m. Both bouts will feature two 30-minute periods, with an intermission between bouts. The second bout is scheduled to kick off shortly after 8:45 p.m. Tickets for all bouts are available at http://www.phillyrollergirls.com/. General admission is $0 in advance, and $12 at the door. A LINE SNAKES FROM DEEP in the parking lot at Playland Skate Center in Austin, Texas, to a tent near the entrance, where a woman in a miniskirt and cowboy boots sells tickets. When the glass doors open, music escapes ? door-frame-rattling bass and clapping drums that fade under the singer?s Joey Ramone?style whine ? and a handful of people palming Lone Star beers rustle out to check the crowd. They seem satisfied. It will be standing-room-only tonight. Inside, the atmosphere is part concert, part kegger, part boxing match, part inside joke. The band Clap!Clap! beats on bravely as oblivious spectators fill seats ringing the skate track. All eyes are on the curtains that shield one corner. From Phil Arnold:The Boston Derby Dames host an Interleague bout as the Boston Massacre will take on the Bronx Gridlock of the Gotham Roller Derby from New York City. As a warm up, a 30-minute exhibition game will be held between Boston and the Maine's Vacationland Vixens. This event will take place at the Shriner Auditorium, 99 Fordham Road in Wilmington, Massachusetts. Doors open at 5 p.m. with first whistle scheduled for 6 o'clock. Tickets are $14 in advance and $16 at the door. This is huge - Gotham Girls made the FRONT PAGE of the NY Times ! I really wanted to add the article When Their Alter Egos Come Out to Play, but the Times wants $250 to repost on the internet.There's background on the resurgence of roller derby and the growth of the WFTDA (Women 's Flat Track Derby Association) featuring a video and interviews with several of the GGRD rollergirls. It makes me proud to be a part of roller derby.
