In the B to B marketplace, what I find most important is customer service. Of course we need good products with competitive pricing. Of course we need quality sellers. October is the exhibition month with so many trade shows on electronics, gifts, home & garden, handbags and accessories etc. Our overseas buyers are typically busy attending such exhibitions first in Hong Kong (my home town) and then going to Guangzhou for the famous Canton Fair. Contacts were made and in some cases samples were bought. I attended such shows before and I typically got hold of a lot of product brochures and leaflets. What I would do is to go to these company websites and try to get more information on them and their products. Then most papers and brochures were trashed after I bookmarked some useful sites. I do feel this is not very environmentally friendly especially with the global warming problem. When I first moved to Beijing early this year, my mother was kind of worried. Coming from Hong Kong, we all heard strange and horrifying stories about products imported from China . For example, we heard oranges that are painted in bright color to make it look fresher. Soyer sauce is made with human hair. Such stories are really terrifying. Even in Beijing, the local media once published that pork bun was made with paper! Even local residents could not believe such things could happen. What is more farcical is it turned out such story was invented by the media. This means all things could be fake. So you will wonder how I can survive in Beijing. Here I am, eating local food every day, using local hairdryer, water boiler at my home and wearing china-made shoes and clothes. I have bought at least 4 pairs of shoes at the local department store opposite my company with very good leather at no more than US$25 per pair on average.
