Eco-Chic: Hayden Harnett Tote
2008-03-19 21:13:00
Hayden Harnett has supported "green" causes for a while, but this is my favorite endeavor so far. The "Green is Good" tote is perfect for groceries, or other random shopping (take it to Saks!). I would even use this is a bag for foul weather, or the beach. I love that it has an interior pocket, so it is actually more functional that regular "green" shopping bags. And 100% of the proceeds goes to Farm Aid's efforts to promote local, organic, and sustainable farming through education and training.

New Rami Kashou
2008-03-19 15:52:00
Rami Kashou was always my favorite Project Runway designer; I really felt that he KNEW how to design for real women (not only models that Christian designed for) and had a sense of the business side of fashion. After all, he's had his own line for several years (I've been posting about it for a while myself), and a showroom in LA. His final runway show was a tad disappointing, but overall, I still think he should have won. Anyway, he hasn't sulked for long, a few new pieces are available now at Maneater Threads. My favorite is this tulip skirt: I COULD NOT make this work for me, it would just accentuate my hips, but if you have more of a straight body type and want to CREATE curves, this is the perfect skirt. It would look fabulous with a white v-neck t-shirt, as well as a beautiful silk blouse. Check out some of his pieces on sale as well, and through the end of the month, take an extra 30% off sale items with code SALEON. Take 20% off regularly-priced...

Review: American Apparel Skirt & More
2008-03-17 23:35:00
I told you I needed this Jerome Dreyfuss bag! After obsessing about it for 48 hours, I went ahead and ordered it from Active Endeavors last week and it arrived today. I haven't actually carried it outside yet, but I've loaded it up with all my stuff, and so far, I love it. The leather is the SOFTEST textured leather I've owned, and the bag itself is incredibly light; I'm actually surprised by how light it is. The only thing I'll have to get used to is the flap over the top of the bag. It closes only with a leather strap through two d-rings (which I will probably never use), but stays in place very well. I'm just not used to "closed" bags anymore! But I have a feeling I'll manage. The skirt is by American Apparel . I was intrigued by the high-waist, and thought I could try to work with it. I ordered the XL (because I have found that AA runs pretty small, for my hips anyway) and washed and dried it on HOT so it would shrink a bi...

April Marin Custom Clothing
2008-03-17 22:07:00
I have been meaning to write about April Marin's custom clothing FOREVER, but alas...better late than never, right? I actually had a dress made for me online several years ago, and it fit me perfectly. I entered the measurements, specifications, and it came out just as I expected it to. It's VERY dated, so I don't wear it anymore, but I like the concept. Especially for a body so hard to fit as mine. April can do jackets, dresses, and suits, and they are gorgeous, and definitely not boring. The Dylan Ruffle jacket is my favorite, although I would prefer it without the ruffle at the bottom. And she could probably do that. Since she does custom clothing...

The gladiator sandal is baaaack...I actually love the trend, but would go for a more pared down version, like these by Coclico, rather than knee-high lace-ups a la Balenciaga.

ThriftyChick Shopping Guide: Coping with a Shopping Addiction
2008-03-15 19:30:00
(we've started a new partnership with where we'll be trading content every week. They'll get some "grechen" codes, and you'll get fabulous Shopping Guide s on everything you ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask) Its 3 am, HSN is on, and the host of the show is almost done wrapping up that last item she is selling before the next host takes over. You find yourself watching to see if the price will go any lower. It doesn't but you still convince yourself to get it. Sounds familiar? No? Ok, how about this one: you’re at Bloomingdales/Saks/Fortunoff/Macys/(Inser tstorehere) your intent was to come in and get one thing instead you've ended up going way over your budget, but have found some way to rationalize spending extra and how you can rearrange your finances to accommodate this purchase. “I'll just skip getting coffee this week, instead of going out to dinner I'll eat in, I'll car pool to save on gas,” you say to yourse...

As prevalent as it is now, nothing beats a cool jersey dress for Spring/Summer. I, personally, need some super-duper shapewear to go underneath, but I LIVE in short and long jersey dresses in warm weather. I love the new arrivals from Heimstone at Language (save 15% with code "grechen")

Eco-Chic: Laloo at Steven Alan
2008-03-15 01:15:00
In case you were looking for another organic cotton, sustainable fashion clothing line, here's the latest: Laloo . Okay, so I'm not THAT excited about this one, but we all need basics, and these are good starting pieces if you're trying to build an organic cotton/sustainable fashion wardrobe. Laloo was created by Rashida Jones (from the Office) and her business partner, and featured in Lucky this month. You can buy it online at Steven Alan . There's really not much to the line, just very basic pieces, great for layering, and some cute dresses. At least it's relatively affordable; nothing over $100, which is unusual for most celebrity clothing lines these days... I love the detailing on the back of this tank, although it's very hard to see from the picture: and this dress looks like the perfect thing to throw on with flat sandals this Summer:

Goldsign Treo Jeans
2008-03-12 19:37:00
Okay, first, I'm going to try to refrain from ANY bag posts for ONE WEEK. I know, I've gone a little overboard recently, but I am simply obsessed with handbags. Mostly, I am just inexplicably drawn to them, but also, I truly believe that the right/wrong bag can make or break an outfit. I'm not saying the bag has to be expensive, or a designer name; I am of the opinion that a bag needs to be proportionate to your body size/type, and functional for your lifestyle. Then again, I do believe that a bag should be an investment. You wear different clothes everyday, but carry the same bag. If you do carry the same bag every day for years, you should invest a substantial amount of money in exceptional quality, and a timeless style that you will love every day you carry it. Anyway, enough said. I realize not all of you are bag whores like me, so I'll get back to posting more clothes/shoes/random stuff and give the bags a break for a while...well, a week anyway. ...

Eco-Chic: Jerome Dreyfuss
2008-03-12 02:47:00
I need an intervention. I just received the loveliest Gerard Darel bag from Delcina (yesterday), and now, I am obsessed with this Jerome Dreyfuss bag at Active Endeavors. Can you blame me? Seems that Jerome Dreyfuss is popping up all over the place lately. Mr Charles Shop (save 20% with code "grechen"), Anica Boutique, Mick Margo, Kaight, and Active Endeavors (where you can take 20% off with code "grechen" by the way...) just added the line. And I really had no idea until I was reading one of my favorite eco-fashion blogs, the greenset, that my obsession is also eco-chic! Jerome Dreyfuss uses Italian leather dyed with vegetable and plant extracts, no toxic crap. So now I have to get it.

Gerard Darel Review
2008-03-11 19:11:00
Gerard Darel handbags have long been favorites in their home country of France, and among celebrities in the US, but until now, it's been a hard brand to find in the US. Honestly, this makes Gerard Darel all the more attractive for me; I won't see my bag on everyone and their mother. I admit, I love to carry a high-quality, beautiful bag that constantly leaves people guessing as to who designed it! My Gerard Darel 36-heures bag from Delcina has no logos, no bells & whistles, no fancy closures...it's just a timeless, gorgeous, high-quality leather bag. I'm about 5'3" and I feel like this size is great for me. It's big, but you KNOW how I love big bags...and not at all overpowering on my frame. It's lined in plain black fabric, and is very easy to stuff full, and then get it all out. I prefer to carry it by hand or on my elbow, but it's very comfortable to carry on my shoulder, although it would NOT fit if you're wearing a...

Mike & Chris Theodore Jacket
2008-03-10 00:45:00
My lifestyle is ultra-casual; I work at home and when I do go out, I set my own dress code. And as you can see from my Outfits-of-the-Day, they mostly consist of jeans, a sweater, and flats. I try to be creative with my outfits...but I dress according to my lifestyle, which mainly consists of running errands, having casual meetings, and shopping. So Mike & Chris fits into my closet very well - each piece adds something unexpected, and while they are very casual, they still look nice and put together. So far, I have 4 Mike & Chris pieces (go to the Reviews Index to see my Mike & Chris reviews) and I'm always on the lookout for the next one. I tried to make that a leather jacket, but the arms were SUPER small on me, so that didn't work...and the price was quite an obstacle...now this one is next: This one is available in black and gray at Maneater Threads, where you can take 20% off with code GRECHEN20.

Jessica Jensen Handbags
2008-03-10 00:25:00
In case you didn't notice, I didn't talk about Fashion Week at all here on Grechen's Closet. To be totally honest with you, I couldn't care less about fashion week NY, London, LA. or wherever. Not because I don't appreciate fashion for fashion's sake, or for art's sake, but I'd just rather see what shows up in stores and on women's bodies - not just on models. I would honestly love to see a "real" woman dressed for work or play in pieces she styled on her own rather than models walking down the runway in ethereal, never-meant-for-public-consumption creations. This is why I'm addicted to Lucky Magazine. It's about shopping more than fashion, and personal style, at least as much as trends. I could do with better editorial and descriptions, but overall, I appreciate that Lucky shows me things I can actually buy, and maybe make work with my body. Maybe... Kind of like Grechen's Closet.... Anyway, this latest...
