VPOD: Mamma Mia
2008-10-22 17:58:00
Mia Farrow may have been named one of Time magazine's Most Influential People in the World in 2008, but I remember her best from her electrifying role in the very creepy 1968 film Rosemary's Baby. And her fans are in for a special treat this weekend as three of her dresses, including today's VPOD, will become available at auction.Today's VPOD features a 1960s trapeze-style accordian-pleated silk chiffon minidress in a bold graphic print that Pierre Cardin designed exclusively for the actress's first starring film role. It's just one of the many lots available at the Whitaker-Augusta Auction Company's Fall 2008 Vintage Clothing & Textile Auction taking place in New Hope, Pennsylvania, this Friday and Saturday.Almost 350 of the over 1200 cataloged lots are available for live bidding on eBay and several photo galleries and full auction details are available at WhitakerAuction.com.It's a treasure trove of vintage treats for vintage fashionistas!(To receive the VPOD via email wit...

VPOD: A True Originala
2008-10-21 16:15:00
The longer you troll around at online vintage clothing stores, the more obscure labels you find that no one but a die-hard vintage fashionista would recognize. These little guys and guys may not have had the pleasure of walking down runways to the oohs and aahs of fashion's elite. But they are a definite pleasure to own and wear. And, quite often, their lower price points are an absolute bargain. For example, today's VPOD features a beautiful wool coat by Originala with a classic cut, huge domed buttons and a fantastic sculptural belt. Its soft grey color is simply sublime and it fits perfectly with this fall's icy pastel trend. Of course, unlike similar coats by Marni, Valentino, Louis Vuitton and Calvin Klein, this stunner's price tag has only three digits. It's a true Original(a) for a vintage fashionista!Available at Contentment Farm Antiques.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Just Koos
2008-10-20 06:18:00
Koos Van Den Akker was born in the Netherlands in 1939, immigrated to the US in 1968 and became a naturalized citizen in 1982. His signature statement has become the delightful mixing of colors, fabrics and textures. In the hands of someone else, combining up to six different fabrics like tweed, fur, leather, wool, sequins and quilted cotton would be a disaster. But in the hands of this master, it becomes...wearable art.Today's VPOD features a smashing example of his genius. This abstract wool jersey cape has cobalt and rust color blocks and dramatic long scarves. It's a very unique find for a vintage fashionista!Available at eBay from Seller ID koko1954.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Off to the Expo
2008-10-17 17:42:00
I may be exhausted from my recent trip (which resulted in the sporadic blog posts of the last few days), but I will still be dragging myself out of bed bright and early tomorrow morning to head on down to the early buying session at the Santa Monica Vintage Fashion Expo .And I'll probably feel like I'm still dreaming when I'm strolling amid the huge array of vintage goodies from more than 90 of the country's best vintage dealers. The show, which is celebrating its 20th year, is a must-see for southern California vintage fanatics. If you're within driving distance and have never attended, hustle on down between 10:30 am and 5 pm on Saturday or between 11 am and 5 pm on Sunday. Or, if you're an early bird, pay twice the regular admission fee of $10 and get first pick at the wares between 9:00 am and 10:30 am on Saturday. And if you have to miss the fun, click here for a list of participating dealers, many of whom have internet sites you can visit. It's a must-see event for a vinta...
VPOD: Lovin' Lanvin
2008-10-14 03:53:00
If you're anything like me, you don't get anywhere near enough cocktail party invitations to put all your "dressy dresses" into circulation. Of course, that's no reason to leave them languishing in the closet.Take today's VPOD for instance. This swanky 1980s number by Lanvin has a fall color palette that is crying out for a little bit of creative layering. Sure it's strapless and would be stunning with high heels and a smashing necklace, but the bold fashionista wouldn't be afraid to pair it with tights, boots, and a chunky sweater either. Think outside the box ladies! It's an inspiring find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage Couture.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Green with Envy
2008-10-13 18:00:00
Shakespeare described envy as "the green sickness" in Anthony and Cleopatra and since then we've all caught the bug and been green with envy at one time or another. Maybe it's struck you over a car, a home, a promotion or even something as silly as a to-die-for dress like today's VPOD.This glamorous silk faille cocktail dress by Estevez has a dramatic cut with an extremely unique bodice and an off-center back zipper. Wrap yourself in something this beautiful and you'll be wearing green without the envy. It's a fabulous find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Hemlock Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. According to research conducted at the CCICOLOR Institute for Color Research, between 62% and 90% of our initial 90-second judgment about a person or product is based on color. Well, it only took about 10 seconds for me to look at today's VPOD and know that I had a favorable response. This vintage chiffon dress is bursting with nature's bounty--beautiful shades taken from pristine mountain streams, lush vegetation, flowering plants and rocks of the earth. The impressionistic pattern teases the eye and the floral detail at the waist just adds to the charm. It's a colorful find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Blonde Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Tulle Time
2008-10-09 17:57:00
My daughter took on an ambitious project this weekend when she and her roommate decided to build--yes, build!--a new sectional for their teeny-tiny Manhattan living room. After several trips to Home Depot, walking armloads of cut 2x4's up five flights of stairs, negotiating with a power drill that had a mind of its own, and re-working their design when they realized they measured incorrectly, the girls completed a pretty marvelous custom-made piece--and neither of them ever held a hammer before!I'm firmly convinced that we women can do anything we set out to do--but if you're not inclined to work with traditional tools, then I suggest you turn your sites to the "tulle" of today's VPOD instead. This 1940s lace and tulle party dress is a true jaw-dropper! With its boned bodice, a few carefully placed rhinestones and that awesome shade of teal, what's not to love? Oh, and the only measurement you'll need is a 24-25 inch waist (you gals with the teeny tiny figures can fight over thi...

Open any home decorating magazine and you'll find some article talking about the mixing of textures. Different textures help to give a room depth and also help satisfy our tactile natures as human beings.Well, mixing textures in fashion is just as important. And the designer of today's VPOD accomplished the task beautifully. This vintage clutch by Vittorio Arnio mixes leather, shiny black patent leather and suede in an oh-so-chic bag that's big enough to carry your essentials without throwing out your back. It's one stylish find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Modify. 2008-10-07 15:58:00
Isaac Mizrahi once described Norman Norell's designs to Vogue magazine as "simply the most glamorous clothes said in the fewest words."One glance at today's VPOD and you know exactly why he was raving. This 1960s dress by Norman Norell features gorgeous lace over pink dupioni silk with a smashing pink sash. It's breathtakingly feminine and oh-so-pretty. With lace as a huge fall trend--and most of it in black, midnight blue, plum and other fall shades--this is a refreshing change of pace that is still perfect for any occasion with crystal chandeliers, silver ice buckets and delicate champagne flutes. It's a very glamorous find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Olive's Very Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: James Galanos American Luxury
2008-10-03 16:05:00
With the fashion industry so focused on the outside, it's good to remember that it's what's on the inside that counts. No matter how beautiful a woman may appear to the eye, if she is nasty or mean-spirited her beauty will diminish the minute she opens her mouth. And James Galanos knew that what was on the inside counted, too. He established a reputation for creating garments whose insides were just as meticulously finished and beautiful as their outsides.Today's VPOD, a 1980s wool dress, is a fine example of his excellent tailoring and is available for a stylish fashionista to call her own. But more than 120 other Galanos masterpieces are available as eye candy at Kent State University's exhibit, James Galanos American Luxury , which runs until March 1, 2009 on the university campus. I was watching The Rachel Zoe Project last night and Rachel was talking about her two great loves: (1) her husband, Roger, and (2) the fashion world. And that got me to thinking about love and fashion.Have you ever noticed that finding the perfect dress and finding the perfect man have a lot in common? While each task requires you to be proactive (dresses and men don't generally fling themselves at your door!), no matter how systematic your approach, there will always be an element of fate or luck in the process that you can't control. And why is it that oftentimes the dress or the man that makes you lose your head is wildly inappropriate while the dress that looks great on the rack or the man who looks great on paper ends up being a huge disappointment? And who can explain that element of chemistry that makes your heart beat and your stomach flutter to tell you when you've found the one?Unfortunately, I can't point you to your perfect match in the romance department but I did fi...

VPOD: Shell It Out
2008-10-01 15:20:00
Believe it or not, there are still a whole lot of women who believe that vintage = mothball-scented grandma sweaters + frumpy housedresses. Au contraire! Sure there are loads of these types of items living in thrift shops throughout the country, but there are also little gems like today's VPOD hidden away. This little sweater shell has beads and sequins galore but looks tres chic with skinny jeans--not at all frumpy or old-fashioned. This one is missing a bead or sequin here and there. But with a price tag under $35, you'll never miss them! VPOD: Knit Picker
2008-09-30 16:39:00
Cashmere is known as the "diamond fiber" in China and could be this vintage fashionista's favorite eco-fabric. After all, quality cashmere garments can last forever with little to no pilling. They can be hand-washed requiring no chemical-heavy dry-cleaning. Plus they are about eight times warmer than wool and don't wrinkle. But......China's increased production of cashmere to meet our needs in the West is having a huge detrimental effect on its land, air and water. Not to mention the deplorable conditions for the darling goats who offer up their fur for your toasty cardigan sweater. As with so many fashion choices, choosing vintage cashmere not only benefits our environment but can offer a one-of-a-kind look that differentiates from the thousands of ho-hum cashmere sweaters sold by big-box retailers every year.Consider today's VPOD. This charming 1960s vintage cashmere sweater by Pringle would look smashing for the office with a skinny little belt, a white shirt, a pencil ski...

VPOD: Biker Chic
2008-09-16 16:50:00
They're #4 on Elle Magazine's list of Fall Must-Haves and the good news is that you don't have to own or operate a motorcycle to join in the fun. Yes, motorcross jackets are all the rage this season--good news for vintage fashionistas since there's no better way to get an authentic lived-in look that to find a jacket that has actually been peppered by pebbles from the road. Of course, not all of these jackets are distressed, some are quite slick and shiny--like today's VPOD.This 1980s version by Moschino glitters with little square mirrors and a crystal drop zipper pull. It's true biker chic for a vintage fashionista!Available at live auction from Leslie Hindman auctioneers.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. Women have always played a significant role in fashion and The Museum at FIT is celebrating their contributions in a special exhibit, Arbiters of Style : Women at the Forefront of Fashion. The show runs through November 8 and features over seventy looks from influential female designers as well as fashion leaders like Diane Vreeland, fashion executive Rose Marie Bravo, photographer Louise Dahl Wolf and Lauren Bacall. These arbiters of style--though often not well-known by the general public--have influenced and shaped fashion for over 250 years as revealed in the exhibition's selected garments from the eighteenth century to today. If you're in NYC, be sure to visit the museum in person. VPOD: A Chic Shawl
2008-04-18 16:19:00
I adore handcrafted items--anything embroidered, hand-beaded or crocheted. I can't help but think about the hours upon hours of labor that are invested in the piece. And I'm so happy and proud to be able to wear that labor decades later for all to see. Today's VPOD is an exquisite example of handcrafting that is guaranteed to turn heads. Why choose an evening coat when you can throw this masterpiece over your shoulders! This hand-embroidered piano shawl dates from the early part of the 19th century. Oh, the colors! Garnet, ruby, tangerine, amethyst, midnight blue, the most delicate pink and more. The thick silk embroidery floss covers every inch of the black silk shawl. And the detail on the fringe is simply amazing! It's a very rare, one-of-a-kind find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Heaven of Gowns.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Make a Statement

Make a statement with something big, bold and beautiful. Everyone should have at least one statement piece--you know, that necklace that completely upstages the dress or blouse. And I'm not talking diamonds and rubies here. No, the statement pieces I'm referring to are usually costume and quite often, ethnic.Just like today's VPOD. This 1960s enamel bib necklace isn't made by a famous designer although it packs some great color and design and then delivers it with a whopping punch. So I caught a bit of The Millionaire Matchmaker the other evening and realized there is some value to reality television. The series follows a matchmaker who fixes up millionaire men with suitable women. And the proprietress, Patti, offered some good advice for any woman, single or attached: If you've got it, flaunt it! If you've got great shoulders, show them off. If you have great feet, make sure they're pedicured. If you've got great legs...well then strut your stuff in today's VPOD.This 1970s mini caftan was born for a long-legged beauty and its bright floral print is cheery and oh-so-right for Spring. VPOD: The Big Chill
2008-04-14 16:20:00
It may have been sweltering in Los Angeles this past weekend, but I felt as if I was in the Arctic Circle. Why? Because I was holed up at an Internet Conference working on plans for the new Zuburbia.com vintage boutique. And, well, can someone please tell me why we're smart enough to send men and women to the International Space Station but not smart enough to keep a hotel room's temperature at a steady 72 degrees! So while tourists were sweltering at Disneyland just a block away, I battled through chattering teeth and monster goose bumps. I would have given anything for a warm and cozy coat like today's VPOD. And now's the time to grab these beauties, ladies--while everyone else is thinking of swimsuits. VPOD: Get Your Wilma On
2008-04-10 15:51:00
This season's runways were packed with asymmetrical, one-shoulder dresses making the oft-forgotten shoulder the body part to bare this spring and summer. And while most designers attribute their inspiration for these designs to the Greek toga, one has to wonder if a little lady by the name of Wilma Flintstone, hailing from the Stone Age town of Bedrock and sporting a simple one-shoulder mini, didn't act as a muse as well. Today's VPOD is a vintage version of the current fashion trend designed by Mary McFadden in the 1980s. Fortuny-style pleats drape oh-so-elegantly in classic muted tones of peach and taupe. Just keep accessories to a minimum--earrings and bracelets will usually work better with this style than necklaces. It's a "yabbadabbadoo" find for a vintage fashionista!Available at C. Oh-la-la! This stunning Chanel dress epitomizes Parisian chic!Yards and yards of navy lace, with just a touch of gray and purple on the bottom ruffles. Boning in all the right places. Tulle underlayer to create structure and movement. This is classic design at its best--made in 1958 yet fresh enough to wear tonight.By the way, this same dress, but in black, was featured in the Victoria & Albert exhibition. In one interview, Pauline Trigere talked about how she could have been an architect or even a surgeon, but that she didn't think she would have enjoyed anything but designing collection after collection. And oh her collections! She began her business in 1942 and officially retired when she was 85 with work that has been compared to that of Balenciaga and Vionnet.Fabric was both inspiration and guide to Pauline Trigere, and she was especially known for the exquisite tailoring in her suits and coats.
