VPOD: Retro Clutch
2008-02-08 16:09:00
Maybe it's a reaction to the strong, vibrant colors that are popping up for spring, but the earthy, more neutral tones in this retro clutch really appeal to me.This 1950s plastic purse has a great mod atomic print but it's missing the black and turquoise colors that one might expect. And that makes it much more interesting. Oh, and that clasp? Yep, it's bakelite. And that makes it much more special. It's a chic retro find for a vintage fashionista!Available at That Purse Place.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. Fashionistas need to KISS--Keep It Super Simple. You can both look good and feel good with just a few simple pieces provided that that they are versatile, work together and are strictly edited.I know, I know, that sounds so easy but can be so challenging. Lots of women end up with closets bursting at the seams and still feel like they have nothing to wear. If this sounds like you, stop the insanity! This season, instead of heading to the mall to add even more items to your wardrobe, take your wardrobe allowance and hire a stylist or wardrobe consultant to help you. Together you'll edit your closet and create a personal "Look Book" of perfectly accessorized outfits with the pieces worth keeping. And today's VPOD would be one of those keepers. This late 70s/early 80s high-waist pencil skirt in violet blue could be a closet staple. For instance, this fresh and modern nautical look is as simple as adding a striped tank to the mix. And it's just one great possibility once you st...

Vintage fur is perhaps the best overall value among vintage clothing. Provided you buy from reputable dealers and purchase furs that have been stored properly, you can save yourself a bundle! Plus you'll know that no more animals have given up their lives for the sake of fashion.Today's VPOD is the perfect example. This black curly lamb coat, trimmed in luxurious fox fur, was custom-made for the Tony Award-winning and Oscar-nominated actress Peggy Cass. Its sleek lines, wide belt, and faceted black buttons scream elegant and chic loud and clear. And what a deal--a comparable quality coat would cost two to five times as much! It's a super swank find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage Textile.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Peep Show
2008-02-05 14:37:00
Women of yesteryear knew that covering most of the body and leaving just a hint of skin visible could still be incredibly titillating. Just read a classic romance novel and notice how areas like the neck, wrists, and even earlobes are described.Today's VPOD takes this idea to another level. Designed for the braless 1970s, this Alice Pollack design offers an interesting juxtaposition between demure and sexy. Fourteen buttoned-up buttons and long sleeves meet sexy cutouts on both front and back. It's a very unique find for a vintage fashionista.Available at Circa Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Suited Up
2008-02-04 15:24:00
Last night's Super Bowl may have been exciting, but fashionistas are more interested in the fashion battles taking place this week. The first will be in Bryant Park as designers show their Fall 2008 collections. And the second will take place on your TV screen between Patricia Field, costume designer for Cashmere Mafia and David C. Robinson, costume designer for Lipstick Jungle. Both of these shows are attempting to capture the old Sex and the City audience by featuring fabulous women with fabulous lives wearing fabulous clothes. And about those clothes...If you're a woman working in a conservative office (and many, many, many still exist) then the looks featured on these shows may not be entirely appropriate as fashion inspiration. Instead, take a look at today's VPOD.This buttoned-up Lilli Ann suit from the early 1950s would pass muster in the stodgiest of corporate conference rooms yet still has a feminine, ladylike appeal. Check out the slim skirt, the peplum waist, the yo...
VPOD: Prep for Evening
2008-01-31 15:22:00
What's pink and green and worn all over? That would be the preppy combo favored by Lilly Pulitzer fans. But when pink or green are carried separately, they pack a not-so-preppy punch for evening.Take at look at today's VPODs: an adorable chiffon pink number by Magid or a smashing lime satin by Ferragamo. Both have bows and gold rhinestone details. And either one of these darling vintage bags would make slipping into your Little Black Dress for the 12th time a whole lot more fun. They're colorful, elegant finds for a vintage fashionista!Available at Unique Boutique NYC.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Edwardian Chic
2008-01-30 15:36:00
There are lots of changes happening over at eBay. Vintage buyers can expect to see the following:* More gallery pictures (which are now free for sellers)* Higher opening bids (as sellers compensate for the increase in ending value fees)* Major changes to the eBay feedback systemOne thing that won't change, however, will be the vintage gems buried among the thousands of listings. Gems like today's VPOD.This Edwardian jacket (part of a two-piece walking suit) is so extraordinary I hardly know where to begin! Maybe the beaver collar with the huge button caught your attention. Or the back swallow tail flap and pleating. Or the decorative topstitching and wood buttons. And that's all before you even get a glimpse of the art-deco silk lining and the meticulous construction. It's a design that transcends time for a vintage fashionista!Offered by bustownmodern on eBay.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailin...
VPOD: Porter Power

Thea Porter spent her childhood in Damascus before studying art at London University and opening her own boutique in 1967. She loved exotic fabrics and lavish textures and soon became known for her bohemian ethnic clothing.Today's VPOD features an outstanding example of her work. This gypsy dress swirls with colorful exotic style but with its tight bodice and that gold-brocade circular cutout, it still packs a punch of sex appeal. It's sure to bring out the hippie in a vintage fashionista!Available at C20 Vintage Fashion.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. Claude Montana is best known for his glamorous furs and his sexy leathers. And while he tended to use huge shoulder pads and bright colors along with exaggerated proportions, he confessed to a personal admiration for the simple forms of Vionnet and Madame Gres.Today's VPOD features one of his magnificent leather jackets done in buttery soft red leather. It fastens with an oversize buckle and features biker-like zippers on the sleeves. The design, which also features a rear cape and peplum, is called "Mateau Court."And it's a regal find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Katy Kane Vintage & Couture Clothing.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Go for the Gold
2008-01-24 16:14:00
Ah, gold! Atomic element 79. Symbol Au. Atomic weight 196.967This ancient metal of the gods has been coveted by fashionistas from as far back as 2500 BC in the ancient Sumerian civilization. And the price of gold is skyrocketing! $903.80 an ounce as of this morning. And yet we still can't get enough. YSL's new lip gloss contains 24-carat gold flecks and upscale spas are offering gold facials (claiming the gold stimulates collagen production).Any surprise gold jewelry is all the rage?!You can ride the trend with today's VPOP selections. These two designer cuff bracelets are simply fabulous. Choose from a 1970s Christian Lacroix or a 1990s Chanel. VPOD: Inspired by Schiaparelli
2008-01-23 15:50:00
There's an old saying that the "devil's in the details" but sometimes it's the details that count. Today's VPOD is a perfect example. After all, it's the hand-beading on the shoulders and sleeves of this 1940s dress that elevates it from just another LBD to a work of art. The draping of the black crepe channels the work of Schiaparelli and serves as the perfect canvas for an array of beads, rhinestones and jewels. But, surprisingly, it doesn't scream "evening" or "cocktails" (though it would be appropriate for both). No, I think this little number would do well at an afternoon event too. It's a sophisticated, elegant find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Marie McLeod Collection.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. And if you're growing weary of donning that heavy winter coat, boots and gloves every morning, let today's VPOD inspire you to look forward to the fun Spring dresses you'll be sporting in just a few weeks. This 1960s dress embodies Spring with its dusty rose and pink shades, lovely floral print, and ethereal chiffon. VPOD: Hot Heels
2008-01-21 16:49:00
The Charles Jourdan label was founded in France in 1920 and for decades has been able to swing with the fashion times. Although in the case of today's VPOD, it appears someone was unable to make up their mind.Is it a heel? Is it a wedge? Before anyone starts getting creative and christening it a "weel" or a "hedge," let's just agree that this heel treatment makes for one interesting shoe. Add in the striking electric color, the hint of gold detail, that sexy leather tie strap, unworn condition with the original box AND a 1970s price tag and you'll be wishing you were a size 7.5.They're hot heels for a vintage fashionista!Available at Posh Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Bead It
2008-01-18 13:24:00
Don't you love finding ephemera in the pockets of vintage coats and handbags? That's something that doesn't happen when you bring home an item from the mall! Ticket stubs. Restaurant receipts. Photographs.Handwritten notes. They're little reminders that the garment or purse had a life before you. That it's been privy to the laughter, tears, and conversations of a prior owner. Today's VPOD is a beautiful c. 1925 French beaded evening bag with an outstanding jeweled and enameled clasp. But this stunning bag also holds the added thrill of a little handwritten note: Honey-moon Paris rue de Rivoli Le Marais w Albert - 1925. It's a sweet reminder that you're not just carrying any ol' evening bag but a piece of history. And that makes it an especially exciting find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Antiquepeek.com.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Batik Me
2008-01-17 16:10:00
Tina Leser liked to use wide-ranging fabric choices: sari silks from India, wools by Pringle, Persian brocades, Siamese robes, Filipino prints. That's what happens when you take an around-the-world honeymoon, like she did with her second husband in 1949. You end up becoming a master at stirring the world's great melting-pot of culture and whipping up incredible fashions infused with a distinctive American viewpoint.Today's VPOD is a fine example of this blending. This 1950s batik-print, one-shoulder sundress has just the right amount of ethnic island influence. I love the sarong-like draping and the charming strap detail at the shoulder. Its representative of the many "play" pieces Tina Leser designed for women on a budget. And more than 50 years later, it's still a beautiful bargain for a vintage fashionista!Available at Blue Velvet Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Designer Tomato
2008-01-16 15:27:00
There are plenty of designer tomatoes. For instance, this year you can expect the Strawmato, a tomato-strawberry hybrid, and a green-and-red striped Zebra. But I'm a strictly organic gal--no bio-engineering or genetic alterations for me please. Nope, the only one who gets to mess with my tomatoes, besides my favorite local farmer, is...Lanvin. This is the kind of designer tomato I'm interested in. At first glance, this late 1970s dress is just a killer maxi with eye-catching colors but then...wait for it...yep, those are tomatoes! I say tomatoes. You say to-mah-toes. VPOD: Abstract Me
2008-01-15 15:47:00
In the documentary film My Kid Could Paint That, director Amir-Bar-Lev tells the story of little Marla Olmstead who, at the ripe old age of four, was painting modern canvases at her dining room table that had critics comparing her to Jackson Pollock. Genius modern art or toddler scribbles? You decide. After all, art is in the eye of the beholder. And if you hold an affinity for abstract art, then today's VPOD is for you. This 1980s print skirt has all the not-so-random brush strokes of ink and color that a girl could ever want. Oh, and its price hovers somewhere around $30, not $30 million. It's a cute abstraction for a vintage fashionista! VPOD: Ringing in 2008
2008-01-14 16:18:00
I fully support the writers in the ongoing Hollywood battle between the WGA and the AMPTP, so I completely understand why we didn't see our favorite celebrities parading in designer fashions at the Beverly Hilton Hotel yesterday. But with the Golden Globe Awards cancelled, I thought I'd try to make-up for yesterday's lack of Hollywood glitz and glamour with some red-carpet worthy vintage gems.Today's VPOD features four stunning rings representing four different eras: an Art Deco aquarmarine and diamond, an Edwardian ruby and diamond, a 1960s fire opal and diamond, and a 1950s estate imperial jade and diamond. These are the real thing, not costume imitations and will set you back from around $3000 to $20,500 depending which one you choose. (Can you guess which of the four is the most valuable?)They'd be a great way to ring in 2008 for a vintage fashionista!Available at Beladora.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my grow...

Pierre Cardin, in his own words, admitted to designing "everything from chairs to chocolate." And while he did license and merchandise his name to the max, it shouldn't diminish from his immense skill as a designer. For instance, there are tons of reasons to love today's VPOD. This 1970s Pierre Cardin clutch is so fresh and modern with its abstract yet organic print and interesting, textured weave. The midnight blue-and-white color scheme works year round. And that "young kick" is evident in today's VPOD.This 1980s dress combines two of this Spring's hottest trends: the one-shoulder, asymmetrical cut and polka dots. It's fresh, feminine and whimsical. VPOD: BarCoded
2007-12-28 15:47:00
Back in high school, I worked as a cashier in a grocery store--waaaay back before there were these things called barcodes and you actually had to key in the price on every item. Now it seems everything has a barcode. In one study, researchers actually placed tiny barcodes on bees to help track their mating habits! So it was only a matter of time, I suppose, before the barcode translated to fashion and the time is Spring 2008. Let's see...there were black-and-white striped pieces carrying labels from Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino, Behnaz Sarafpour, Chanel and more.Today's VPOD feature a darling vintage version of the trend dating from sometime in the late 60s or early 70s. The requisite black-and-white stripes are accented with bows on the skirt and tiny little rhinestones on the bodice. VPOD: Retro Beach Babe
2007-12-27 13:27:00
My daughter leaves this afternoon to spend New Year's in the Canary Islands and I'm pretty sure none of the swimsuits she's packed provides as much coverage as today's VPOD. It's hard to believe that back in the 1920s, suits with even more coverage than this one used to spark gang-like battles in which women were actually arested for defying laws against scanty beachwear.Compared to a skimpy string bikini, this little number appears downright grandma-ish but retro prints (especially large, colorful florals) are back in fashion. And a suit like this is just perfect for sun-bathing. Accessorize with heels, a skinny little belt, oversize sunglasses and a floppy hat for an oh-so-glam retro Hollywood look. VPOD: Chic Chicago
2007-12-26 14:26:00
Until January 5, 2008, vintage fashionistas still have the opportunity to view the exhibit, Chic Chicago : Couture Treasures from the Chicago History Museum, at The Museum at FIT in New York City. It provides a rare opportunity to see 50 great couture treasures from the collection of the Chicago History Museum including gowns by Worth, Doucet and James as well as masterpieces by Balenciaga, Schiaparelli, Madame Gres and Mainbocher.Plus this exhibit is perhaps even more interesting because of the Chicago Museum's emphasis on provenance which provides fascinating information on the great women of style who supported the designers. For example, this Vionnet gown was worn by Mrs. Potter Palm II when she was presented to the Queen of England in 1938, a time when court rules dictated the colors, styles and details of dresses that would be acceptable. And if you have no plans to be anywhere near NYC during the next week, grab a cup of coffee, tea or cocoa and settle down at your computer ...
VPOD: Imperfect Perfection
2007-12-21 15:21:00
Wabi Sabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection. Instead of shunning decay from time, weather, love and age, it celebrates it. And for a vintage fashionista, that means learning to embrace frayed edges, subtle color fading, minor snags and other imperfections. Not every vintage garment is in mint condition. And while I'm not suggesting you wear tattered rags, there are many vintage garments whose uniqueness overshadows their minor flaws. Like today's VPOD.This 1930s dress has gold-painted carved wooden buttons. And just look at those interesting sleeves! And that rounded collar with the front pleat.Though it's only listed as "good" condition, a gal with a wabi-sabi mindset would snag this beauty in a heartbeat. It's an example of imperfect perfection for a vintage fashionista!Available at Hemlock Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: After While Crocodile
2007-12-20 15:16:00
My list of New Year's resolutions grows longer every day. Last week, after a visit to the massage therapist, I had to add "Use Handbags More." Seems carrying a shoulder bag was contributing to the knot in my scapula. So I went a huntin' and caught me...a crocodile. A vintage crocodile handbag that is.And while there are tons of gorgeous crocodile bags to be had, many are quite conservative, classic pieces. This bag, however, has a more contemporary feel even though it still has a characteristic vintage celluloid clasp. It's a stylish find for a vintage fashionista!Available at The Croc Doc Shop.P.S. I feel the same way way about crocodile and leather as I do fur. I won't buy new items but will continue to buy vintage. I feel it's a way to honor animals whose lives were taken years before I could make a conscious choice to do anything about it.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here...

VPOD: Zebra Season
2007-12-19 15:24:00
In 1959, Anne Fogarty wrote a book called Wife Dressing. And while it did detail how to become a well-dressed wife, Anne also shared her observation that women play many different roles in life and encouraged each woman to find her own personal style. In general, she recommended an understated, natural look for women that didn't necessarily follow the fashion trends of the day. And in her own designs, Anne Fogarty delivered garments that were simple, stylish and youthful. In this maxi dress from the 1960s, for example, Anne Fogarty used sheer bird's eye cotton pique voile but then she "pumped up the volume" with a subtle pattern that suggests zebra. So while it has an understated elegance, it scores super-high on the comfort scale. It's an eye-catching summer party dress for a vintage fashionista!Available at RetroDress.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here.
