In yesterday's LA Times, there was an interesting article entitled Pain at the Pump ." But it wasn't talking about the rising cost of oil. No, it was detailing the rising cost of the other kind of pumps: those by Christian Louboutin, Versace and Balenciaga. Cinderella would have had a fit if she lost one of these...it seems prices have broken through the magical $1,000 mark with some Spring styles carrying price tags of $1300 and more! In fashion, at least, there is proof of reincarnation. How else to explain the jumpsuit returning to life once again? And from my informal opinion polls, this is one polarizing piece of clothing: you either Love it (with a capital L) or Hate it (with a capital H).If you're part of the latter group, you won't be too pleased with today's VPOD selection. As a vintage dealer, I primarily handle items from the last few decades. Although I do have an affinity for century-old clothing--and have a gorgeous black mourning dress that I will whip out of its archival box for an evening gala someday--it's so difficult to find clothes of this age in wonderful, wearable condition. Today's VPOD, however, is a notable exception.This white linen bustle coat dates from the 1880s and has a very contemporary feel with its scalloped edging, adjustable side ruching and row of brass buttons. Examples of his work from The Museum at FIT and the Christian Louboutin archives will be on display at The Museum at FIT until April 19th.Born in 1964, Christian Louboutin began sketching shoes at the age of 11, and his red-soled shoes are now worn by celebrities and fashion-conscious women worldwide. in 1933, Adolf Schuman founded his wholesale business and named it "Lilli Ann" after his wife Lillian. The company grew quickly and had over $1 million in sales by 1940. Now I'm a real Lilli Ann fan as are many vintage fashionistas, but I particularly love the work from these early days of the company. Take a look at today's VPOD.This black knit jacket from the late 1940s has quite contemporary styling with its gathered torso and band collar. Every Alfred Shaheen print has a history that can be traced to a Polynesian or Far Eastern culture.
