VPOD: A Victorian Treat
2008-03-26 15:40:00 As a vintage dealer, I primarily handle items from the last few decades. Although I do have an affinity for century-old clothing--and have a gorgeous black mourning dress that I will whip out of its archival box for an evening gala someday--it's so difficult to find clothes of this age in wonderful, wearable condition. Today's VPOD, however, is a notable exception. This white linen bustle coat dates from the 1880s and has a very contemporary feel with its scalloped edging, adjustable side ruching and row of brass buttons. Even more exciting is that it's a wearable size (36-27-44 to be exact) and in sturdy, wearable condition. You sassy teens and twenty-somethings can pair it with leggings; more mature gals like myself can match it with jeans for day or satin trousers for evening. It's a true Victorian treat for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage Textile.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mail... VPOD: Vintage of Tomorrow
2008-03-25 14:28:00 When people meet me for the first time, they inevitably expect me to be wearing head-to-toe vintage. And they are always disappointed. Seldom does head-to-toe vintage work well. Instead, I pepper my outfits with vintage: a blouse or blazer here, a cuff bracelet or vintage belt there. And while I love my super-flattering pair of Jordache jeans from the 1970s I also wear Seven for All Mankind. This weekend, I sported a pair of black-and-fire-engine-red vintage pumps with a very contemporary dress.Yet even when I buy contemporary clothes, I've got vintage on my mind: the vintage of tomorrow. I'm always asking myself, Is this something I'd like to pass on to my granddaughter someday? (And no I'm not a grandmother yet!) But it's a way to test whether I think something is timeless. And if I'm going to buy timeless, well-designed, contemporary pieces, I prefer to pay bargain prices. So I thought I'd share one of my secret sources. Gilt.com offers luxury lifestyle brands at s... VPOD: Polo Power
2008-03-24 04:04:00 The sport of polo was first played in Persia as a training game for the military and has been called the "Game of Kings." Of course, in the fashion world, Polo is associated with Ralph Lauren. But the label on today's VPOD comes from a more unlikely source. This carefree summer frock is actually a Malia-Honolulu creation but without an ounce of Hawaiian influence. Instead, it's loaded with preppy fun-in-the-sun appeal with bold stripes and a polo pony print on kelly green cotton. Plus its price tag is designed for those of us who don't have trust funds. What a preppy polo find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Mavro Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Sole Desire: The Shoes of Christian Louboutin
2008-03-21 14:35:00 There's still time to catch the first exhibition to feature the work of Christian Louboutin. Examples of his work from The Museum at FIT and the Christian Louboutin archives will be on display at The Museum at FIT until April 19th.Born in 1964, Christian Louboutin began sketching shoes at the age of 11, and his red-soled shoes are now worn by celebrities and fashion-conscious women worldwide. His "Pansy" Mary Janes, featured here, are made of silk crepe and suede and scream "Springtime." One wonders if they were influenced by the time he spent as a landscape designer. (Yes, a landscape designer!)Not near NYC? Be sure to check out the online exhibition here to read more about this talented designer. And don't miss the "Shoe Lexicon" section to learn the definition of every shoe term imaginable. This is "sole" food for a vintage fashionista!(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: A Gem of a Jacket
2008-03-20 15:24:00 in 1933, Adolf Schuman founded his wholesale business and named it "Lilli Ann" after his wife Lillian. The company grew quickly and had over $1 million in sales by 1940. Now I'm a real Lilli Ann fan as are many vintage fashionistas, but I particularly love the work from these early days of the company. Take a look at today's VPOD.This black knit jacket from the late 1940s has quite contemporary styling with its gathered torso and band collar. Add in the just the right amount of pearls and rhinestones and you have a wonderful piece that you can wear for day or evening. It's a gem of a jacket for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage Martini.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Shaheen Sarong
2008-03-19 14:44:00 Every Alfred Shaheen print has a history that can be traced to a Polynesian or Far Eastern culture. And today's VPOD is no exception. This 1950s rayon dress features native fisherman along with colorful fish. And like all Shaheen prints, it was handscreened onto the fabric using separate screens for each color in the design. But unlike many Shaheen prints that are bright and colorful, this one is more subdued and quite interesting.Of course, it does take second fiddle to the chic sarong design of the dress. But together, they create a lovely choice for a vintage fashionista!Available at Posh Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Off the Cuff
2008-03-18 15:10:00 Coco Chanel began her career designing hats. By the beginning of WWI, she had expanded into clothing and during the 1920s, she also turned her talents to the design of costume jewelry and changed our view of costume jewelry forever.First of all, even though "fake," Chanel created jewelry of the highest quality and made it collectible with limited runs, some signed pieces and non-fake price tags. She also decided to embrace its fakeness by making it bigger in size, more bold in color, or more abundant, as in multiple strands of pearls instead of just one.Today's VPOD features a gold Chanel bracelet from the 1970s that has multi-colored leather strips woven through its dainty design. It's a perfect Springtime treat for a vintage fashionista!Available at VeryVintage.com.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: A Perfect Match
2008-03-17 14:20:00 Once upon a time, decades ago, in a fashion land far, far away, ladies actually matched their shoes and their handbags. No, this isn't a fairy tale. They really did! Match ing sets were all the rage. Of course, these days, the rules have relaxed and it's fun and fashionable to mix it up. But with everyone else mixing it up, it's quite interesting to wear a matching set.Take a look at today's VPOD. This vintage handbag and pair of heels by Andrew Geller are classy and chic. The printed pattern is Byzantine and done in white and heather gray (one of my favorite colors for Spring). They're a perfect match for a vintage fashionista!Available at ModBag.com.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: A Barbieri Beauty
2008-03-14 15:02:00 Sometimes a girl just can't make up her mind...Should she wear a flirty little cocktail number or go for the glamour of an evening gown? Instead of furrowing that brow and creating unnecessary frown lines, why not get hybrid with this unique little number by Helena Barbieri? This sleeveless crepe dress is absolutely stunning with its Mondrian pattern of beading and an ankle-length chiffon panel that trails behind. VPOD: Color Your World
2008-03-13 15:36:00 Spring has sprung! At least in all the fashion magazines. Pages and pages of colorful, fun items. Pages and pages of beautiful editorial shoots. But do you ever read the small print on those pages? Where it tells you the designer and the price of the item? And has that price ever taken your breath away?Of course, there are many designer vintage items that carry price tags that could feed the populations of small countries for a week too. But there are also plenty of affordable, fun Spring items to be had in your local vintage boutiques and online.Today's VPOD features one such item awaiting bids on eBay. This playful 1960s minidress by Malia features bold colors mixed with both a floral and a geometric print. VPOD: Rhodes Scholar
2008-02-18 15:15:00 Shakespeare's Juliet says "What's in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet." Tell that to the men and women who are pouring over the latest lists of popular baby names and deciding what to name their soon-to-arrive bundles of joy! These days, of course, celebrities have made it fashionable to choose unusual baby names. But this wasn't the case back in 1940 when Zandra Rhodes was born. Her brave mother, at a time when Mary, Betty, Dorothy, Helen or Barbara would have been the norm, decided to spell her little girl's name with a "Z" rather than an "S." So Sandra became Zandra and grew up to become a famed textile designer with both a very distinctive style and a very distinctive name.Today's VPOD features one of her 1980 designs. This lovely dress has a feminine pleated ruffled neckline and a satin shoestring belt with a subtle baby blue and pink print on black silk crepe that shows off Zandra's signature for all to see. It's a classy lit... VPOD: Baby Oh Baby
2008-02-15 14:59:00 When Carroll Baker starred in the 1956 movie Baby Doll she wore a short little nightie that soon became a "must-have" fashion item and shortly transitioned into daywear. Ta-dah! The babydoll dress was born. These flirty dresses with forgiving fits are more popular than ever (perhaps fueled by all the Hollywood actresses who love to wear them to camouflage and deny their pregnancies). But there's no denying that they are fun and ultra-comfy to wear. The only challenge is finding one in a cut and fabric that won't make you look too, well...babyish.Enter today's VPOD. An original born in the 1960s, this silk crepe baby doll has a chic, grown-up appeal. VPOD: Color My World
2008-02-14 15:28:00 Maybe you were one of those lucky people who always knew what they wanted to be when they grew up. Not me. I probably changed my mind twenty times before I hit high school. The list included such varied professions as international journalist, heart surgeon and textile designer. And with that love of fabrics, you can imagine why this little frock stopped me in my tracks. The variegated jewel tones of the dyed silk used in this dress are simply stunning. And what luck that the fabric was masterfully draped by Guy Laroche in a flowing, comfortable design. Just think--he turned out this beauty in the 1970s just a few decades into a career that began with no formal design experience! What a chic way to color the world of a vintage fashionista!Available at auction on eBay from Seller ID: koko1954.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Colorful Cashin
2008-02-12 15:20:00 Bonnie Cashin was recognized with over two dozen industry awards throughout her long and varied career. And while she is identified as a pioneer in the design of American sportswear, it's interesting to note that she started her career designing for dancers--first for a local ballet troupe and later for the famed Roxy theater--and even applied her talents to the design of practical, comfortable military uniforms for women during WWII.Today's VPOD features a fun colorblock lambswool sweater she designed in the 1970s. With its ribbed neck and cropped sleeves, it still looks fresh and contemporary three decades later! It's a sensational find for a vintage fashionista! VPOD: Retro Clutch
2008-02-08 16:09:00 Maybe it's a reaction to the strong, vibrant colors that are popping up for spring, but the earthy, more neutral tones in this retro clutch really appeal to me.This 1950s plastic purse has a great mod atomic print but it's missing the black and turquoise colors that one might expect. And that makes it much more interesting. Oh, and that clasp? Yep, it's bakelite. And that makes it much more special. It's a chic retro find for a vintage fashionista!Available at That Purse Place.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Get Nautical
2008-02-07 15:31:00 Fashionistas need to KISS--Keep It Super Simple. You can both look good and feel good with just a few simple pieces provided that that they are versatile, work together and are strictly edited.I know, I know, that sounds so easy but can be so challenging. Lots of women end up with closets bursting at the seams and still feel like they have nothing to wear. If this sounds like you, stop the insanity! This season, instead of heading to the mall to add even more items to your wardrobe, take your wardrobe allowance and hire a stylist or wardrobe consultant to help you. Together you'll edit your closet and create a personal "Look Book" of perfectly accessorized outfits with the pieces worth keeping. And today's VPOD would be one of those keepers. This late 70s/early 80s high-waist pencil skirt in violet blue could be a closet staple. For instance, this fresh and modern nautical look is as simple as adding a striped tank to the mix. And it's just one great possibility once you st... More About: Nautical

Plus you'll know that no more animals have given up their lives for the sake of fashion.Today's VPOD is the perfect example. This black curly lamb coat, trimmed in luxurious fox fur, was custom-made for the Tony Award-winning and Oscar-nominated actress Peggy Cass. Its sleek lines, wide belt, and faceted black buttons scream elegant and chic loud and clear. VPOD: Peep Show
2008-02-05 14:37:00 Women of yesteryear knew that covering most of the body and leaving just a hint of skin visible could still be incredibly titillating. Just read a classic romance novel and notice how areas like the neck, wrists, and even earlobes are described.Today's VPOD takes this idea to another level. Designed for the braless 1970s, this Alice Pollack design offers an interesting juxtaposition between demure and sexy. Fourteen buttoned-up buttons and long sleeves meet sexy cutouts on both front and back. It's a very unique find for a vintage fashionista.Available at Circa Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Suited Up
2008-02-04 15:24:00 Last night's Super Bowl may have been exciting, but fashionistas are more interested in the fashion battles taking place this week. The first will be in Bryant Park as designers show their Fall 2008 collections. And the second will take place on your TV screen between Patricia Field, costume designer for Cashmere Mafia and David C. Robinson, costume designer for Lipstick Jungle. Both of these shows are attempting to capture the old Sex and the City audience by featuring fabulous women with fabulous lives wearing fabulous clothes. And about those clothes...If you're a woman working in a conservative office (and many, many, many still exist) then the looks featured on these shows may not be entirely appropriate as fashion inspiration. Instead, take a look at today's VPOD.This buttoned-up Lilli Ann suit from the early 1950s would pass muster in the stodgiest of corporate conference rooms yet still has a feminine, ladylike appeal. VPOD: Prep for Evening
2008-01-31 15:22:00 What's pink and green and worn all over? That would be the preppy combo favored by Lilly Pulitzer fans. Both have bows and gold rhinestone details. And either one of these darling vintage bags would make slipping into your Little Black Dress for the 12th time a whole lot more fun. 2008-01-30 15:36:00 There are lots of changes happening over at eBay. Vintage buyers can expect to see the following:* More gallery pictures (which are now free for sellers)* Higher opening bids (as sellers compensate for the increase in ending value fees)* Major changes to the eBay feedback systemOne thing that won't change, however, will be the vintage gems buried among the thousands of listings. Gems like today's VPOD.This Edwardian jacket (part of a two-piece walking suit) is so extraordinary I hardly know where to begin! Maybe the beaver collar with the huge button caught your attention. Or the back swallow tail flap and pleating. Or the decorative topstitching and wood buttons. VPOD: Inspired by Schiaparelli
2008-01-23 15:50:00 There's an old saying that the "devil's in the details" but sometimes it's the details that count. Today's VPOD is a perfect example. After all, it's the hand-beading on the shoulders and sleeves of this 1940s dress that elevates it from just another LBD to a work of art. The draping of the black crepe channels the work of Schiaparelli and serves as the perfect canvas for an array of beads, rhinestones and jewels. But, surprisingly, it doesn't scream "evening" or "cocktails" (though it would be appropriate for both). No, I think this little number would do well at an afternoon event too. It's a sophisticated, elegant find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Marie McLeod Collection.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. 2008-01-21 16:49:00 The Charles Jourdan label was founded in France in 1920 and for decades has been able to swing with the fashion times. Although in the case of today's VPOD, it appears someone was unable to make up their mind.Is it a heel? Is it a wedge? Before anyone starts getting creative and christening it a "weel" or a "hedge," let's just agree that this heel treatment makes for one interesting shoe.
