VPOD: Holiday Bling
2007-11-26 15:06:00 Now that Thanksgiving is over, it's time to turn our attention to the holiday season and I wanted to share this nifty decorating idea I spied in Hallmark Magazine. It seems Laura Beddini in Weston, Connecticut had a grandfather and uncle who once owned Panetta Jewelry in New York City. When the business closed, the leftover jewelry was divided up and Laura received all the clip-on earrings. When she graduated from college and moved to her first apartment she didn't have any Christmas ornaments so she decorated with the jewelry. And what a fabulous idea! The rhinestones and faceted stones sparkle and shine and create a very sophisticated look. Clip-on earrings and brooches work best (although I don't suggest using anything truly valuable in case something gets damaged). It's a great use for a lone earring that's missing its partner or pieces with missing rhinestones. No need to throw them into a landfill. Instead throw them into a box and keep adding to your collection bit b... More About: Holiday , Bling
VPOD: Polished Grey
2007-11-20 15:13:00 Sure there are lots of great dresses out there for your upcoming holiday parties, but there's something about today's VPOD that just screams "cocktails" for me. It may be the icy shade of grey that conjures up visions of cocktail shakers, candelabra and sterling silver trays of canapes. Or maybe it's the simple sophisticated style of an ealier era that accessorizes perfectly with a martini glass. But from any angle, this 1950s vintage cocktail dress has plenty of glamour. The satin bodice combines both a demure bow on the front with a sexy criss-cross back. And the skirt is dreamy floating chiffon. It's an elegant, lady-like find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Mary Moore Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Bringing Sexy Back
2007-11-16 15:17:00 I'm all for bringing sexy back. But somehow, it seems like too many of today's young girls think sexy = lots of bare skin. I beg to differ. I think sexy is a state of mind. And a sexy woman looks sexy in well...anything. And sometimes just a hint of what's under the clothing and not on display is far sexier than putting it all out there for the world to see.Take today's VPOD for instance. This 1970s jersey evening gown is tres sexy and it has long sleeves! But that keyhole cut shows just enough cleavage to give it sexy status. And the fabulous beading further accentuates your curves (without any worry of accidentally falling out of your dress!)It's just one way to bring sexy back for a vintage fashionista!Available from lamodevogue on eBay.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Walk With An Egyptian
2007-11-14 15:45:00 With the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in the early 1920s and Cecille B. DeMille's popular film Cleopatra in 1934, it was just a matter of time before the Egyptian motif was seen in the fashion world.Today's VPOD is one example. This 1930s clutch handbag features a bakelite frame with Egyptian figures and hieroglyphs. It's a true conversation starter for a vintage fashionista!Available at ESTATEmentsHandbags.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Mink It
2007-11-13 15:50:00 Los Angeles had temperatures in the low 50s last week and already I saw people bundled up with their scarves and gloves and yes, even some wool coats. To someone who grew up near the Poconos and spent most of her adult life near Cleveland's snow belt, it seems a bit odd. I mean, I'm used to winter temperatures in the 50s feeling like Spring and being a reason to take off the hats and scarves and coats! But even out here, there are still a handful of days a year when I could find a reason to wear today's VPOD. And as much as I love the weather on the West Coast, I envy those of you who could enjoy this one for weeks on end. This 1960s coat by Golet has outstanding style. Thick, textured woven black cotton is offset with a luscious white mink collar and front panel. Then a little adjustable belt creates a built-in princess waist. It's a cold weather treat for a vintage fashionista!Available at Timeless Vixen.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchas... More About: Coats , Mink
VPOD: First Lady of Fashion
2007-11-12 15:23:00 You thought it was tough figuring out what to wear to your company holiday party? How about figuring out what to wear to your husband's inauguration as President of the United States? Now there's a fashion dilemma! One First Lady , Nancy Reagan, was able to hold her own through the inauguration and other important events like visits to the Soviet Union during the Cold War and the wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana. She had a simple and elegant style and even won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1988.This past weekend, Nancy Reagan -- A First Lady 's Style, a wonderful retrospective exhibit of her wardrobe, opened at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley. The year-long show features 80 looks arranged chronologically, from her wedding suit to the suit she wore to her husband's funeral. VPOD: H is for Hermes
2007-11-08 15:00:00 There was a fascinating article on Hermes in the September 2007 issue of Vanity Fair. Did you know that Hermes "does not boast, does not use celebrities in advertising, does not license its name, (and) does not let imperfect work leave the atelier (imperfect work is destroyed)"?What a company! And what amazing art (I won't diminish their work by calling them mere products). Of course, if you'd like to own an infamous Kelly bag, you might find it hard to afford and spend years on a waiting list. If you're in a hurry, you can purchase authentic pre-owned and vintage Hermes bags from Createurs de Luxe, but prices start at around $10,000 and head upwards to $55,000.Of course, Hermes doesn't just create handbags. Their scarves are treasures and, as you can see in today's VPOD, they also make jewelry. This gold and leather bracelet is simple and refined with the exquisite craftsmanship of Hermes. And like anything Hermes, it's made to last for generations and will never be out...
VPOD: A Fall Paganne
2007-11-07 13:58:00 One word came to mind when I saw this striking Paganne dress--"Thanksgiving." Now, I know Turkey Day is a few weeks away, and maybe your family allows you to wear Uggs to the dinner table. But maybe not. Maybe you're going to be meeting his parents for the first time. Or maybe it's your turn to channel Martha Stewart and it's the first time you're hosting all the relatives at your place. Maybe you want to feel confident and look great. (And certainly looking great will help you feel more confident!)Then today's VPOD will be sure to help. It's made of silk jersey knit and has a perfect autumn print filled with deep, rich colors. So after consuming waaaay too many calories you'll still be comfortable. And, if you do dribble a bit of cranberry sauce, no one will notice. It's a perfect Thanksgiving dress for a vintage fashionista!Available at Woodland Farms Antiques.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing ... VPOD: Dramatic Don Loper
2007-11-06 15:36:00 Exquisite - Adj. - lavishly elegent and refinedIs there a better word to describe this 1950s two-piece ensemble from Don Loper? I don't think so.Oh, the details! Shoulder straps comprised of three black satin straps. A dozen tiny satin-covered buttons. That intricate tulle lace bodice. All this from Don Loper, the Ohio-born designer who made his way to Hollywood and eventually made a guest appearance as himself on the fourth season of I Love Lucy.So Lucy was a fan of his as were so many others. Like today's VPOD, with its soft black chiffon, ultra-full skirt, and that extraordinary waist and ruching on the jacket, his designs were elegant and refined--in other words, exquisite. It's a dramatic find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Heaven of Gowns.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Screenprinted Beauty
2007-11-05 16:05:00 Screenprinting, according to one source, has its origins in Japan, with a form of stenciling known as katazome. And today's VPOD features a 1960s screenprinted dress aptly described as "Asian Fusion."The bold print of brick red trees on yellow cotton has a definite Asian vibe but the funky pocket, flaring sleeves and matching sash feel very today. VPOD: Lovely Lilac
2007-11-01 14:30:00 You have to love the internet, right? I mean, years ago you had to be a celebrity or fashion insider to be invited to Fashion Week. Now, within hours and from miles away, you can view all the latest designs on your computer--from the hits to the misses and everything in between. Of course, soon after the runway shows end, we start seeing the "How to Wear" articles because not every runway look translates well to real life. That's not a problem for today's VPOD which features a runway look requiring no instructions. Modeled in a catwalk show for Radley in 1973, it's a super-sexy Ossie Clark design that would be just as sexy and stylish this coming Spring. The moss crepe is the loveliest shade of lilac and the deep sculpural plunging neckline...well, it plunges! VPOD: Shirr Genius
2007-10-31 14:19:00 The shirring that's often found on today's belly-baring, ultra-snug tops doesn't do justice to this amazing sewing technique. But shirring, the gathering of fabric in parallel lines of stitching to create soft, feminine folds, is masterfully displayed in today's VPOD.This 1950s matte silk haltar blouse was made in Italy and still has its original tags. Beautiful hand-stitching helps to keep all those lovely, figure-enhancing folds in place and diagonal piped side seams create a flattering waist line. It's a bombshell haltar top for a vintage fashionista!P.S. One more thing...It has a 35-inch bust and is labeled a Size 14! (Just a friendly reminder that when you buy vintage you absolutely MUST look at the measurements and not the size labels.)Available at Past Perfect Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Ice Blue Beauty
2007-10-29 15:26:00 I must confess...I'm a total interior design junkie. I can get lost for hours in design magazines and visit Apartment Therapy every day. Right now, my favorite look is a room with ice blue walls, plush white carpeting and lucite and silver accents. And if I could translate this look into a favorite piece of clothing, it would be today's VPOD.This 1960s wool coat by Suburban Miss is simply darling! The perfect shade of pale ice blue is set off by shiny silver buttons. Luxurious grey and white chinchilla fur adorns the collar and cuffs. VPOD: A Petite Mugler
2007-10-25 14:52:00 I'm a total fan of his fragrance, Angel, and I'm a total fan of his designs as well. Thierry Mugler, in my opinion, is a designer that vintage lovers will be coveting in decades to come. Since he began his company in 1974, he has been a controversial fashion figure with a difficult-to-define style--after all, not many designers work with plastic, plexiglass and chrome!Today's VPOD features one of his more traditional designs, but it's anything but ordinary. This black cotton dress has the most interesting asymmetrical neckline with keyhole cutout and then an unexpected pocket on the back. And one-shoulder dresses are shaping up to be a key Spring 2008 trend. It's a fabulous find for a petite vintage fashionista!Available at Archive Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Goody Two Shoes
2007-10-23 15:11:00 The phrase "goody two shoes" originated in a children's book published in 1765. Poor little Goody only owned one shoe so when she was finally given a pair she is so happy she runs around crying out "Two shoes! Two shoes!" Perhaps you get that same feeling of glee when you look at today's VPOD.These 1970s platforms are by Goody Two Shoes and are simply amazing! Of course with their 5.75-inch heels, there isn't a podiatrist alive who would recommend them for everyday wear but...for a few hours...with a killer outfit...on a special occasion...I'll take the risk. Or, if you prefer, you can simply put a pair like these in your closet and be like John Travolta. Regarding his platforms from Saturday Night Fever, he told Premiere magazine, "I don't wear them, but once in a while I peek at them."After all, these are quite a collectible find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Listit Cafe.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up fo...
VPOD: Le Sweater
2007-10-22 15:19:00 It's a simple fact of life that more evening wear has survived from decades past than everyday clothes. Which is why it's always a thrill to find a really interesting sweater like today's VPOD.I know, I know...it doesn't look like it was knit on broomsticks like most of the oversized sweaters this season has to offer. No, this Claude Clement sweater from the 1970s was made in Paris and is tres chic with its sexy, snug fit. VPOD: Celebrating Galanos
2007-10-18 16:28:00 In a San Francisco Chronicle article by Carolyne Zinko, the classic fashion designer James Gala nos gives his opinion of today's fashions:"We're living in a blue-jean world with itty-bitty tops,'' he says. "What a bore. These women look dirty. They look unkempt. The masses are a mess. Whoever perpetuated the bare-belly look ought to be hanged.''I couldn't say it better myself! And this from a man who, along with Norell, was America's answer to Christian Dior and Christobal Balenciaga. Americans who couldn't afford to travel to Paris during haute couture's heyday would buy Norell's or Galanos' ready-to-wear clothes instead--after all, the fabric and workmanship were almost the same.Today, here in Los Angeles, James Galanos will be honored with his own sidewalk star when he receives the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style award. VPOD: Preppy Plaid
2007-10-17 16:31:00 I have friends who, after spending twelve years in Catholic or private school uniforms, say they'll never, EVER wear plaid again. No way, no how. Not a hat or scarf or skirt. VPOD: A Paisley Punch
2007-10-16 15:32:00 When you look at a paisley pattern do you see tadpoles or tear shapes? This distinctive fabric pattern has a long history. And while the town of Pais ley, Scotland has long been associated with the design, paisley did not originate there. It can actually be traced back about 2,000 years, eventually finding its way to Europe via the East India Trading Company in the mid-18th century. As a fashion trend, it has a longevity unlike many others. Although it's certainly more popular some years, it's become a classic that never looks outdated. Just look at today's VPOD. VPOD: A Scenic Handbag
2007-10-10 15:51:00 When I was visiting my sister in Pennsylvania a few weeks ago, I experienced the exact opposite of the mania I deal with in Los Angeles every day. We drove past huge cornfields, shared the road with the Amish in their horse-drawn carriages and passed a sign that declared, I kid you not, "Cow Crossing." And when I spied today's VPOD, it evoked the same sense of simpler times, family values, and connection to the land that are easy to forget when you live in a congested area with millions of people. This whimsical handbag features a farm theme in traditional autumn shades with tiny details like button studs and rhinestones. Even so, he is probably most famous for his perfume, Joy, which used the almost-as-famous tagline: "the most expensive perfume in the world."Today's VPOD features one of his designs from the 1960s--an absolutely darling silk pocket mini-dress with buttoned shoulders.
