VPOD: Dramatic Don Loper
2007-11-06 15:36:00
Exquisite - Adj. - lavishly elegent and refinedIs there a better word to describe this 1950s two-piece ensemble from Don Loper? I don't think so.Oh, the details! Shoulder straps comprised of three black satin straps. A dozen tiny satin-covered buttons. That intricate tulle lace bodice. All this from Don Loper, the Ohio-born designer who made his way to Hollywood and eventually made a guest appearance as himself on the fourth season of I Love Lucy.So Lucy was a fan of his as were so many others. Like today's VPOD, with its soft black chiffon, ultra-full skirt, and that extraordinary waist and ruching on the jacket, his designs were elegant and refined--in other words, exquisite. It's a dramatic find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Heaven of Gowns.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Screenprinted Beauty
2007-11-05 16:05:00
Screenprinting, according to one source, has its origins in Japan, with a form of stenciling known as katazome. And today's VPOD features a 1960s screenprinted dress aptly described as "Asian Fusion."The bold print of brick red trees on yellow cotton has a definite Asian vibe but the funky pocket, flaring sleeves and matching sash feel very today. It's a screenprinted beauty for a vintage fashionista!Available at Dorothea's Closet Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Lovely Lilac
2007-11-01 14:30:00
You have to love the internet, right? I mean, years ago you had to be a celebrity or fashion insider to be invited to Fashion Week. Now, within hours and from miles away, you can view all the latest designs on your computer--from the hits to the misses and everything in between. Of course, soon after the runway shows end, we start seeing the "How to Wear" articles because not every runway look translates well to real life. That's not a problem for today's VPOD which features a runway look requiring no instructions. Modeled in a catwalk show for Radley in 1973, it's a super-sexy Ossie Clark design that would be just as sexy and stylish this coming Spring. The moss crepe is the loveliest shade of lilac and the deep sculpural plunging neckline...well, it plunges! It's a fantastic figure-hugging find for a body-conscious vintage fashionista!Available at C20 Vintage Fashion.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing ...

VPOD: Shirr Genius
2007-10-31 14:19:00
The shirring that's often found on today's belly-baring, ultra-snug tops doesn't do justice to this amazing sewing technique. But shirring, the gathering of fabric in parallel lines of stitching to create soft, feminine folds, is masterfully displayed in today's VPOD.This 1950s matte silk haltar blouse was made in Italy and still has its original tags. Beautiful hand-stitching helps to keep all those lovely, figure-enhancing folds in place and diagonal piped side seams create a flattering waist line. It's a bombshell haltar top for a vintage fashionista!P.S. One more thing...It has a 35-inch bust and is labeled a Size 14! (Just a friendly reminder that when you buy vintage you absolutely MUST look at the measurements and not the size labels.)Available at Past Perfect Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Ice Blue Beauty
2007-10-29 15:26:00
I must confess...I'm a total interior design junkie. I can get lost for hours in design magazines and visit Apartment Therapy every day. Right now, my favorite look is a room with ice blue walls, plush white carpeting and lucite and silver accents. And if I could translate this look into a favorite piece of clothing, it would be today's VPOD.This 1960s wool coat by Suburban Miss is simply darling! The perfect shade of pale ice blue is set off by shiny silver buttons. Luxurious grey and white chinchilla fur adorns the collar and cuffs. Its fabulous lines, construction and little details give it the look of a much more expensive label. It's a sophisticated and chic find for a vintage fashionista!Available for auction at Bebopadiva Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: A Petite Mugler
2007-10-25 14:52:00
I'm a total fan of his fragrance, Angel, and I'm a total fan of his designs as well. Thierry Mugler, in my opinion, is a designer that vintage lovers will be coveting in decades to come. Since he began his company in 1974, he has been a controversial fashion figure with a difficult-to-define style--after all, not many designers work with plastic, plexiglass and chrome!Today's VPOD features one of his more traditional designs, but it's anything but ordinary. This black cotton dress has the most interesting asymmetrical neckline with keyhole cutout and then an unexpected pocket on the back. And one-shoulder dresses are shaping up to be a key Spring 2008 trend. It's a fabulous find for a petite vintage fashionista!Available at Archive Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. 2007-10-24 14:52:00

VPOD: Goody Two Shoes
2007-10-23 15:11:00
The phrase "goody two shoes" originated in a children's book published in 1765. Poor little Goody only owned one shoe so when she was finally given a pair she is so happy she runs around crying out "Two shoes! Two shoes!" Perhaps you get that same feeling of glee when you look at today's VPOD.These 1970s platforms are by Goody Two Shoes and are simply amazing! Of course with their 5.75-inch heels, there isn't a podiatrist alive who would recommend them for everyday wear but...for a few hours...with a killer outfit...on a special occasion...I'll take the risk. Or, if you prefer, you can simply put a pair like these in your closet and be like John Travolta. Regarding his platforms from Saturday Night Fever, he told Premiere magazine, "I don't wear them, but once in a while I peek at them."After all, these are quite a collectible find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Listit Cafe.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up fo...
VPOD: Le Sweater
2007-10-22 15:19:00
It's a simple fact of life that more evening wear has survived from decades past than everyday clothes. Which is why it's always a thrill to find a really interesting sweater like today's VPOD.I know, I know...it doesn't look like it was knit on broomsticks like most of the oversized sweaters this season has to offer. No, this Claude Clement sweater from the 1970s was made in Paris and is tres chic with its sexy, snug fit. A wool/acrylic blend in an interesting berry/mustard color combo and trimmed with plush velvet applique, it's a perfect choice with jeans. It's a cozy little find for a vintage fashionista! An available eBay auction at Metal Thread Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Celebrating Galanos
2007-10-18 16:28:00
In a San Francisco Chronicle article by Carolyne Zinko, the classic fashion designer James Gala nos gives his opinion of today's fashions:"We're living in a blue-jean world with itty-bitty tops,'' he says. "What a bore. These women look dirty. They look unkempt. The masses are a mess. Whoever perpetuated the bare-belly look ought to be hanged.''I couldn't say it better myself! And this from a man who, along with Norell, was America's answer to Christian Dior and Christobal Balenciaga. Americans who couldn't afford to travel to Paris during haute couture's heyday would buy Norell's or Galanos' ready-to-wear clothes instead--after all, the fabric and workmanship were almost the same.Today, here in Los Angeles, James Galanos will be honored with his own sidewalk star when he receives the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style award. This honor will be added to a long list of awards for his work including the Coty Fashion Award Hall of Fame and the Council of Fashion Designers of Americ...

VPOD: Preppy Plaid
2007-10-17 16:31:00
I have friends who, after spending twelve years in Catholic or private school uniforms, say they'll never, EVER wear plaid again. No way, no how. Not a hat or scarf or skirt. Not even that famous Burberry print. Of course, not all of us feel this aversion. Some of us might look at today's VPOD (with a $28 price tag, mind you) and our little fashion brains would start spinning. After all, there are dozens of ways to mix-and-match this classic 1980s wool plaid skirt with the sweaters and blouses and blazers in our closet that have been waiting patiently to see the light of day again. It's a preppy little plaid for a vintage fashionista!Available at Adore Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: A Paisley Punch
2007-10-16 15:32:00
When you look at a paisley pattern do you see tadpoles or tear shapes? This distinctive fabric pattern has a long history. And while the town of Pais ley, Scotland has long been associated with the design, paisley did not originate there. It can actually be traced back about 2,000 years, eventually finding its way to Europe via the East India Trading Company in the mid-18th century. As a fashion trend, it has a longevity unlike many others. Although it's certainly more popular some years, it's become a classic that never looks outdated. Just look at today's VPOD. This 1960s ivory silk coat by Bill Blass for Bond Street features a paisley pattern in a splashing medley of cobalt blue, burnt orange and gold. Plus it's tailoring is pure street chic. What a powerful punch of paisley for a vintage fashionista!Available at Posh Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. Are you a woman who's shy about color? Do you look in your closet and see a sea of drab neutrals like black, grey and tan? So give yourself permission to add a bright splash of color every now and again. VPOD: A Scenic Handbag
2007-10-10 15:51:00
When I was visiting my sister in Pennsylvania a few weeks ago, I experienced the exact opposite of the mania I deal with in Los Angeles every day. We drove past huge cornfields, shared the road with the Amish in their horse-drawn carriages and passed a sign that declared, I kid you not, "Cow Crossing." And when I spied today's VPOD, it evoked the same sense of simpler times, family values, and connection to the land that are easy to forget when you live in a congested area with millions of people. This whimsical handbag features a farm theme in traditional autumn shades with tiny details like button studs and rhinestones. Yes, it's kitschy, but it's also so unique that it reminds me why I started collecting vintage in the first place! It's a fun little find for a vintage fashionista!Available at ModBag.com.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: A Pretty Patou
2007-10-09 15:30:00
Jean Pato u is perhaps one of the most influential fashion designers of the early twentieth century and he certainly left his mark. According to at least one source, he is the first designer to have used his initials on his clothing. Even so, he is probably most famous for his perfume, Joy, which used the almost-as-famous tagline: "the most expensive perfume in the world."Today's VPOD features one of his designs from the 1960s--an absolutely darling silk pocket mini-dress with buttoned shoulders. The A-line design is simple but the details and workmanship hint of couture. It's a pretty Patou for a vintage fashionista!Available at VintageCouture.com.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Pin One On
2007-10-05 15:40:00
You know me...if everyone's wearing it, that means it's time for me to move on to something else. And I have to admit I'm done with the whole brooch thing. Been there, done that. This season I plan to add pizazz with vintage animal and insect pins. I guarantee they'll spark conversation:Handsome man in elevator:"Excuse me, is that a...lizard you're wearing?!"Me:"This? Oh no, it's a gecko actually..."Of course, the answer could be a lobster, a moth, a turtle, a fish, a monkey, a snake, or a grasshopper depending on the day of the week. These vintage pins come in all shapes and sizes, both plain and fancy. Take today's VPOD. This little guy mixes pink and black enamel with rhinestones. Two suggestions though. First, match the weight of the pin to your garment to avoid any fabric damage. Larger, heavier pins should be worn on more durable fabrics like wool. Second, use your imagination. Pins don't have to be worn on just a lapel. Pin one to a hat, a plain ol' clu...

VPOD: Bright and Lacy
2007-10-03 14:56:00
One of the favorite parts of my job is talking with women (or men) who are interested in selling a collection of vintage clothing. Sometimes I'll reminisce with the woman herself, hearing stories of where each and every piece was purchased or worn. Sometimes it's the children or grandchildren relating the stories. Often, especially with evening wear, there is an emotional attachment to a dress or gown or coat. Very often it's associated with a particular and important event in someone's life. And I believe that when you have a chance to own these items and know their history, it's an extra special treat. For example, today's eye-catching blouse is from the collection of Renata Cicioni of Buenos Aires, Argentina--the former wife of a count, the widow of a prominent landowner and horsebreeder and a well-known social figure and philanthropist. The yellow silk features hand-stitched black lace and a low slung belt at the hips. And it's just one of many beautiful pieces bein...

I wonder if Yves Saint Laurent found his inspiration for today's VPOD from the ballet. I remember wearing cozy wrap-around sweaters over my leotards when I was a young ballerina practicing her releves. Of course, this little number is waaaay more glamorous.Designed in the 1970s for the Rive Gauche ready-to-wear line, this wrap blouse features a glittery lame chiffon with fluttery ruffles at the neckline and sleeves. VPOD: Saffron Stunner

Saffron is a sacred and auspicious color with many regarding it as the most holy color of all. It is often worn by Buddhist monks and is an important color in Hinduism as well. But, regardless of religious leanings, I think we can all agree it looks just stunning on today's VPOD.This 1950s chiffon party dress is an unlabeled treasure. I just love its pleated bodice with the off-center corset-like lacing and the way the hem dips from shorter in the front to longer in the back. VPOD: I Feel Pretty, Oh So Pretty
2007-09-26 15:46:00
Before you know it the holiday party season will be here and you're probably going to react in one of two ways. You'll either eagerly look forward to invitations knowing you have the perfect party dress in your closet or you'll be running around like a maniac trying to find somthing to wear at the last minute. I've played out both of these scenarios over the years and I promise you the first one is a lot more fun!Today's VPOD features a fabulous 1950s cocktail dress that would be oh-so-right for so many holiday occasions. This sophisticated dress features a favorite label: "Harvey Berin designed by Karen Stark." It's a relatively simple yet elegant design--a fitted sheath with pleated cap sleeves and a rear view that includes a plunging back and floating panel. But because it's done in gorgeous ivory satin with a quite contemporary black-and-white print pattern, it looks fresh and modern although it has distinctly vintage roots. It's an oh-so-pretty find for a vintage fa...

VPOD: Coated in Style
2007-09-25 14:27:00
So far, in the last month, just popping in and out of Goodwill stores, I've found a 1970s Karl Lagerfeld blouse, a skimpy little 1980s Alaia dress, a Koos van den Akker skirt/blouse set and an amazing little 1960s sequin bolero jacket with mink trim. So many people I talk to are surprised at my success because when they try shopping in thrift stores, they never can find anything! So what's the trick? First, I always walk into a store believing I'll find at least one great item. (It doesn't always happen but keeping an open mind certainly helps!) Second, I don't waste time looking at every item and label because I want to find that one great item in 15 minutes or less. So, I scan. And what I'm generally looking for is...fabric. Quality clothes are made of quality fabric. It looks different and it feels different and once you learn to recognize it, you too will be scoring great thrift store finds.Take today's VPOD for example. This 1960s coat has an unusual slub fabri...

VPOD: Print It!
2007-09-24 15:20:00
I have to admit that I am a total sucker for prints even though I find them very difficult to wear. Because I'm petite, a print dress that looks great on a hangar will often completely overpower me when it's put on my tiny frame. And since I have to hem almost every long dress made, I have to be very conscious of the pattern at the hemline and make sure it will still work when it's taken up two inches. (How I envy you ladies that don't have this problem!)Still I love the search for that great print dress that works for me and today's VPOD stopped me in my tracks. First of all, it's one of my favorite colors: a deep coral red. This is the background for a interesting print pattern that isn't too limited and isn't too overdone but somehow is just right. Add a sexy keyhole neckline, high walking slit, a Paganne signature on the bodice plus those amazing bell sleeves and ding, ding, ding...we have a winner! It's a printed treasure for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vin...
