VPOD: Scarf Season
2007-09-21 15:46:00 I wish I had today's VPOD with me yesterday on my return trip to LA. When I stepped off the plane at LAX, the temperature may have been in the 70s, but I swear that 737 felt like a refrigerator! Surely, you too can find an excuse to wear this beauty. Its an Yves Saint Laurent find from the 1970s and has a chic pattern of bold red, black and shimmering gold. VPOD: Mod Danglers
2007-09-12 05:59:00 The oldest earrings ever found by archeologists were discovered in Iraq and date back to about 2,500 B.C. Since then, earrings have had a rocky history, coming in and out of style based on the availablity of metals, the popularity of elaborate hairstlyes or wigs, and fashion trends like Elizabethan collars or bonnets. And don't think that pierced earrings are a modern invention--they've been around far longer than screw-on and clip-on backs, both of which weren't invented until the early 20th century.Today's VPOD features a pair of pierced drop earrings from the 1960s. Colorful plastic shapes combine with geometric gold pieces for a fresh and flirty contemporary look. They're mod little danglers for a vintage fashionista!Available at Posh Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: A Feathered Friend
2007-09-11 15:41:00 Feathers are one of the most complex structures found in nature with the remarkable size and color of some feathers still unexplained by science. And though feathers are replaced by birds periodically through molting, there have been times in our history when fashion's demand for feathers grew so extreme that it caused destruction to certain species. So, please wear feathers responsibly! Unfortunately, the horrors of factory-farming can be found in the feather industry as well as the meat industry. That's why I choose to wear older vintage items and refuse to purchase any new feathered goods without exploring how the manufacturer obtained its feathers.Today's VPOD features a beautiful 1960s cocktail dress of burned-out velvet with luscious feather trim at the neckline and hem. Feathers are a huge trend for fall and while new designs can be costly, you'll be pleased with the price tag on this vintage version. It's a wonderful feathered find for a vintage fashionista!Available a... VPOD: Authentic Alligator
2007-09-10 16:59:00 Let's face it, we all have different budgets. What's inexpensive for one person is three months take-home pay for someone else. Sometimes, when it comes to fashion, you have to remind your wallet to think like Goldilocks. When searching for a vintage treat, it's important to find an object you love at a price that's not too cheap, not too expensive, but "just right" for you. Fortunately, there are options for every price range. Today's VPOD features three gorgeous vintage alligator handbags carring price tags from $250 to $995. They all have classic shapes, are in great condition and would look smashing with so many of your fall outfits. But regardless of what you decide to invest, you'll want to care for your bag properly so it will survive another decade or two. Here are some tips:*Store your bag in a cool, dry place. *Avoid water, heat and direct sunlight.*If your bag becomes wet, wipe it gently with a soft, dry absorbent cloth and then let it dry naturally.*Never u... VPOD: Z is for Zandra
2007-09-07 15:33:00 The Los Angeles Times once called Zandra Rhodes "London's lovely fashion lunatic," and I say the fashion world could use more just like her! Although she admitted to Vogue in 1978 that "...it's 15 percent talent and the rest is sloggin' your guts out," just look at what that fifteen percent talent and sloggin' guts creates!Today's VPOD showcases a Zandra Rhodes' design from the 1970s handmade in England. First and foremost a textile designer, Zandra's hand-painted dusty rose ribbons on black silk chiffon take center stage. But she didn't stop there. She added just the right amount of sequins and beads to the bodice, hem and waistline and topped it all off with a mini-bustle at the base of the spine. It's a masterpiece from a master for a vintage fashionista!Available at Frock.P.S. VPOD: Tarty Tartan
2007-09-06 15:02:00 The Scots love their tartans and boy do they take them seriously! They began naming and registering official clan tartans way back in 1815. Each clan has at least one distinct tartan with a unique sequence of colors and shades that are used for kilts, ties and other garments. The good news is you don't need to be a member of a clan or even have one Scottish bone in your body to wear today's smashing VPOD. This vintage taffeta gown by Francesco features a red-and-black tartan print with lots of pretty details like its rhinestone buttons. But it's the amazing bias cut skirt with almost a 17-foot sweep that will guarantee a grand entrance for any hostess. It's a perfect holiday dress for a vintage fashionista!Available at Marilyn's Midnight Glamour.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: A Foxy Trigere
2007-09-05 15:21:00 Any way you measure Pauline Trigere's career--from the age of 10, when she first started using a sewing machine, or a few years later when she made her first dress, or from 1942 when she started her own house--you end up with over 50 years of fabulous design. An avid collector of turtles, a traditional Chinese symbol of longevity, she herself lived a long creative life, passing away at the age of 93 in June 2002.Today's VPOD features one of her amazing designs. This timeless ensemble includes a taupe dress with sash and a matching cape with a full six-inch hem of luscious fox fur. It's so luxurious it should come with its own limousine and butler! It's a stunning find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Unique Boutique NYC.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Playing with Prints
2007-09-04 16:19:00 Well, Labor Day's over and that means no more white, right? I mean, growing up, that's what I was told. You could only wear white between May 31 and Labor Day. Of course, these days, there really aren't any hard and fast rules. You can wear white this week or next and not have to worry about being written up by some sort of Fashion Police. But as the weather chills in the weeks to come, some prints, like today's VPODs, will look much more appropriate than say, Lilly Pulitzer florals. All three of these vintage dresses have deeper, richer fall colors and are perfect for layering. Add a cardigan sweater or one of this season's wide belts. Pull on tights and boots. Or throw on a corduroy or velvet blazer. These aren't designer masterpieces but with each dress carrying a price tag of less than $15, you'll have plenty of extra to spend on playful accessories. They're fun and inexpensive fall finds for a vintage fashionista!Available at Parish.(To receive the VPOD via email ... VPOD: Coated with Cranberry
2007-08-31 15:16:00 You can walk into any Goodwill or local thrift shop and probably find a rack of plain ol' vintage coats that are ho-hum and ordinary on any given day of the week. The same holds true for a quick browse on eBay. But if you have patience and wait it out, you are sure to eventually spy something with a little extra pizzazz, a little je ne sais quas. It may be hard to describe but you'll know it when you see it--like today's VPOD from the 1960s.First you'll notice the deep, rich cranberry wool. Then you'll run your eyes over the incredible lines and that interesting 1/2 cape design and think..."interesting, very interesting." Finally you'll pick out the little details: a lush velvet collar and back belt, the contour cut on the front vertical pockets, the dark buttons on the sleeves. You'll hold your breath as you cautiously look at the price tag...then breathe a sigh of relief that it's well within your budget at under $200. Yep, this is the one and wasn't it well worth t... VPOD: Pleasing Pleats
2007-08-30 14:22:00 Fortuny was the King of Pleats and most costume museums have one of his pleated gowns in their collection. According to one source, his pleats were created by evaporation when wet and folded silk was laid on heated tubes. Not sure what method was used to get the amazing pleats in today's VPOD, but Bill Blass certainly appears to be channeling the master here! This Bliss Blass design is from 1975-1985. And I just love so many things about this dress! First, let's talk about its yummy color combo of melon and pink. Then, it's tea length. It keeps it understated enough to wear in the afternoon or during the cocktail hour yet it is most definitely elegant enough for evening, too. And finally, we have those amazing pleats! They do take center stage, don't they? VPOD: Bikini Babe
2007-08-29 15:08:00 Where I grew up, at least in my family, there was no swimming in lakes after August 15 because of some old wive's tale that I never quite understood. But with Labor Day fast approaching, summer swim days for a lot of folks are numbered. So why not make one last splash with today's VPOD.This early 1960s bikini has both a patriotic and nautical feel with its bold red and white stripes, blue trim and gold anchor hardware. Plus the boy cut bottoms and full coverage top show just the right amount of skin--not too sexy but not too reserved either. It's an all-American find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Senorita Hollywood.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Groovin' Grey
2007-08-28 16:53:00 I'd love this fabulous little Lillie Ann jacket even if it wasn't this season's hottest shade. But the fact that it's grey too--well, it's a double whammy!Add in the cream piping and buttons, the nubby tweed fabric, the asymmetrical collar and that fabulous form-fitting cut and you can see why Lilli Ann pieces are so coveted by their owners. Style like this is always in fashion! VPOD: A Design Starr
2007-08-27 16:01:00 Talent, it seems, often runs in families. The Starr's are just one shining example. Both Frank, the father, and Malcolm, the son, produced some fabulous garments beginning in the 1930s and continuing to the 1970s.Today's VPOD is an example from the Frank Starr label in the 1950s. Very feminine jet black tulle covers black sillk faille. Lovely lace appliques adorn the bodice and a black satin sash fashions into a bow in the back. It's an ultra-feminine LBD for a vintage fashionista!Available at Kitty Girl Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Definitely Dior
2007-08-24 16:27:00 Christian Dior once said that he could have produced all of his collections in black or white. "Color cannot transform a failure of a dress into a success," he said. For him, cut was the ultimate star and he was the king of cut, shaking up the world with his New Look and then going on to formulate the Oblique line, the Oval line, the Profile line, the Princess line, the H line, the A line and the Y line. Today's VPOD features a black wool coat from his Autumn/Winter 1958 collection. It's lined in black taffeta and that extremely large collar can be put up to protect your head in the cold. VPOD: Belted Beauty
2007-08-23 15:59:00 There's someone in the blogiverse who's blogging about how he's paring his life down to 1,000 items. That's it--1,000 items total. And while I'm all for simplifying and not living to excess, it would be much more difficult for me to accomplish this same task because of my passion for vintage shoes and handbags and belts and scarves and...well, the list goes on and on and I haven't even begun counting books and fashion magazines!Take today's VPOD. This 1970s Yves Saint Laurent studded suede belt packs in a whole lot of style in just a tiny bit of space. Who doesn't have room for just one more belt?! VPOD: A Blast of Blass
2007-08-21 16:34:00 Bill Blass is an American fashion icon with quite an impressive resume that includes being a three-time winner of the Coty American Fashion Critics Award, the recipient of the first lifetime achievement award from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and one of the founding members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He was so successful designing for Maurice Retner on Seventh Avenue in New York, that he was one of the first designers to see his name on a label. His eye for design is legendary--just look at today's VPOD.This 1980s cocktail dress is very ooh-la-la. Give someone else bright yellow silk with yards of black lace and you could end up with a gaudy mess but Blass is able to create a garment that oozes sophistication. It's a little blast of Blass for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage Martini.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Back in Black
2007-08-17 16:36:00 Your winter coat is probably one of the most-worn items in your wardrobe, right? So it makes sense to find something classic and timeless (so you'll still feel in style next year), something that has great quality (so it will last more than one winter) and something you love (so you can squeal with delight when you pull it from storage in 2008 and 2009 and 2010).Today's VPOD fits the bill on all accounts! This 1950s wool coat has fabulous lines and details (like the nipped waist and gold-and-black buttons) and all this style comes in at a price tag under $250! VPOD: Golden Gloves
2007-08-16 15:30:00 Gloves are one of this season's must-have fall accessories. They appeared on just about every fall runway and it's not about utility--even if it doesn't get cold enough to throw a snowball where you live, chances are you'll see women wearing gloves in a few months! This year, besides the standard leather, velvet, or suede, we've seen lace, cotton, silk and sheer gloves plus bright colors, beading, feathers, and fur. It's a glove bonanza! And you can find fabulous vintage versions of all of these pieces. Here's some info you might find helpful:Glove Size: To determine your glove size, measure around the widest part of your dominant hand, excluding your thumb. The measuring tape should be sitting on top of your knuckles. Gentle bend your hand into a fist, read the measuring tape and that's your glove size: Size 6 (XS) up to 10 (XL) (although sometimes gloves are "one size fits all" if the fabric has a lot of stretch).Glove Length: Glove length is measured in "buttons," de... VPOD: The Little Beaded Sweaer (LBS)
2007-08-15 15:55:00 I absolutely adore the look of a vintage little beaded sweater (LBS) with jeans. It has so much more panache than a t-shirt and still gives off a casual weekend feel. Of course, you can take that same LBS and pair it with a pencil skirt for the office. Or wear it in place of a blouse under a suit jacket or blazer. And now--now!--is the time to scoop up these beautiful little treasures from eBay and vintage clothing sites.Yes, Helen Bond Carruthers may be the most-coveted label, but there are plenty of unknown masterpieces out there as well. And since the best sweaters are made of cashmere or lambswool rather than acrylic, be sure to store your gem properly to keep away those pesky moths. If you're not the type to purchase archival boxes, at the very least you can protect your sweaters in a zippered pillow cover.Today's VPOD features a 1950s hand-beaded, silk-lined lambswool cardigan to inspire you. It's a pretty purchase for a vintage fashionista!Available at Polkadots and Mo... VPOD: Bringing Sexy Back
2007-08-14 16:05:00 Today's VPOD is a great example that proves you don't have to bare a whole bunch of skin to still look incredibly sexy. Sweater dresses are hot for fall and you can see why. They're a great way to look and feel very feminine while still being covered up enough for an office. This is an authentic 1940s sweater set by Tony Berman in a sizzling red virgin wool. The skirt is long--below the knee. The sweater top is accented with just a touch of sparkling rhinestones and pearls and the matching belt will help you create that coveted hourglass shape. It's a sexy find for a vintage fashionista! No word if this is one of the many patterns that Amey designed in collaboration with the fabric designer, Tzaims Luksus, or if this is Amey's sole inspiration, but it's a definite winner. It's a one-of-a-kind find for a vintage fashionista!Available at VintageVibrations.com.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Stunnng Lilli Ann
2007-08-10 15:54:00 Lilli Ann was founded by Adolf Schuman in 1933 and named after his wife, Lillian. And although his garments were mass-produced for the ready-to-wear market, they are held in high esteem by collectors because of their distinctive quality, craftsmanship, and fabrics, many of which were imported from France.Even better, the Lilli Ann label provides a huge "bang for the buck," tending to hold its value over time and offering price tags that should be much higher based on quality. Just one glance at today's VPOD and you can almost feel an "haute couture" vibe, can't you? It looks very expensive but can be had for a lot less than you might think (and for not much more than a plain ol' wool coat at your local department store). This 1960s Lilli Ann outfit incorporates several fall trends with its bright color, cape detail and fur trim. The little black dress with luscious fur hem has a unique cut-out back and can carry its own at any cocktail soiree. The matching coat is magnifican... More About: Dresses , Coats
VPOD: Poppy Love
2007-08-09 15:58:00 Poppies have long been used as a symbol of sleep (remember Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz?). Yet colorful poppies create some of the most eye-catching prints! Marimekko loves them and they appeared in this season's Oscar de la Renta spring collection. If you're looking to add some poppy punch to your closet, look no further than today's VPOD.This 1970s vintage maxi is unlabeled but full of style. VPOD: Raise the Volume
2007-08-08 15:45:00 A structured dress with a hint of fullness in the skirt or the sleeves seems to be on the Fall 2007 Must-Have List in every major fashion magazine. Of course, pulling off this look requires excellent tailoring and design so the best examples carry labels like Galliano for Dior, Lanvin and Louis Vuitton. You can, however, find vintage alternatives to the modern dresses that walked down the fall runways. You're looking for soft volume in a structured shape--like in today's VPOD.This vintage 1970s dress by Roger Milot for Fred Perlberg is stunning with its rich and vibrant paisley wool. VPOD: Boot-ing Up
2007-08-07 16:17:00 It isn't quite time to pack up the sandals yet, but it is time to maybe start thinking about your fall purchases. And if you only have room in your budget for one piece of footwear this season, then consider an ankle boot. Something like today's VPOD perhaps?Yes, the ankle boot is back and I just love this utilitarian piece. Sooo comfy with pants and yet so fashionable with some textured tights when you decide to wear a skirt or dress instead. These vintage brown ankle boots are by Xavier Denaud and feature a high--make that very high--four-inch heel. They'll look awesome with jeans, a fall sweater dress, a little plaid skirt and so much more. So maybe they're not utilitarian enough for an ice storm or blizzard but that still leaves lots of days in between for these boots to do some walking. They're the perfect footwear for a vintage fashionista!Available at Archive Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my grow... VPOD: A Pretty Peplum
2007-08-06 16:39:00 A fashion designer I met at a recent wedding has been interviewing for jobs all over LA and of course, our conversation turned to Spring 2008. What can we look forward to? 2007-08-03 16:10:00 Roy Halston Frowick was born in Des Moines, Iowa and raised in Evanston, Indiana--not the hubs of the fashion world by any means--yet somehow he went on to build a fashion empire. And though it might have spiraled a bit out of control in the later years, when his name was licensed and found on just about everything it seemed, he remains on the list of masterful American fashion designers.Today's VPOD expresses Halston's beautiful draping ability and his sense of minimalism that inspires the wearer to add her own personal style to the outfit. VPOD: Gucci Gal
More articles from this author:2007-08-02 15:55:00 Warning: There are plenty of counterfeit designer handbags out there! Usually created in the most popular styles, some of them can be really great copies--hardly distinguishable from the real thing at first glance and sometimes even at a second or third glance. But you'll never find me carrying one!No, I'm not a snob. There are lots of legitimate reasons not to succumb to the temptation of a fake Fendi on your arm. Here are my top three:1. The sale of counterfeits has been linked to terrorism and organized crime.2. The holders of copyrights, trademarks and patents should receive the profits owed to them for their work rather than criminals. 3. Counterfeits cost Americans jobs. (And often their work is replaced by sweatshop or even forced child labor.)So as a consumer how do you protect yourself?First and foremost, buy from reputable sellers!
