VPOD: Mollie's Magic
2009-03-13 16:34:00 Mollie Parnis made her first design after a football game. Her date invited her to go home and change so he could take her dancing, but she was wearing the only dress she owned. So...she picked up a pair of scissors, chopped off the neckline from her one-and-only dress and replaced it with the lace collar from one of her mother's blouses. Then she added a flower and voila! A designer was born who went on to dress First Ladies Mamie Eisenhower, Betty Ford and Rosalyn Carter. While never known as a design innovator, she did produce well-made, wearable clothing and had a theory: "Good designing doesn't mean dresses you have to throw every year."Amen to that!Today's VPOD features one of her 1970s maxi dresses in a colorful abstract print that would have felt right at home parading at one of the Spring 2009 runway shows. It's a bit of Mollie magic for a vintage fashionista!Available at Annie CreamCheese. (To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase informati... More About: Magic
VPOD: In the Nude
2009-03-12 17:06:00 Do you feel comfortable in the nude? Proenza Schouler, Ralph Rucci, Carmen Marc Valvo, Anna Sui and Thakoon all went nude this Spring and fashion magazines are encouraging fashionistas to do the same.Nude dressing is quite the oxymoron, isn't it? And it can be a bit hard to pull off. The trick is to choose a garment in a nude shade that creates a bit of contrast by being a shade or two lighter or darker than your complexion. Get inspired with today's VPOD. This easy, breezy 1970s viscose and linen dress is loaded with texture and oh-so-comfy style. It's a great way to go nude for a vintage fashionista!Available at The Urban Collection.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Mini Me
2009-03-11 16:37:00 Why bother with all those boring financial indicators to predict the stock market's performance when you can just look at womens' hemlines? The Hemline Theory says that when skirts are high, the market performs well, and, when skirts are long, well...prepare for new lows. Silly? Perhaps. But it's as valid as whatever methods those CNBC pundits are using to predict what's going to happen--they're less accurate than weathermen! So on the off chance that there is something to this Hemline Theory, we women should do our part and start wearing more minis. And today's VPOD would be a fine choice. This 1960s hand-knit mini-dress has a mod print and the same metal hardware used by Paco Rabanne. It's just fun and fabulous enough to reverse a market downturn all by itself. What an eye-catcher for a vintage fashionista!Available at Swank Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Very Valentina
2009-03-10 15:42:00 Kohle Yohannan, author of Valentina : American Couture and the Cult of Celebrity, says that "Valentina's interest in collecting and wearing vintage clothing and accessories was decades ahead of its time." And while she ran a successful couture business from the 1920s to the 1950s that rivaled the likes of Charles James and Mainbocher, and dressed women with the last names of Astor, Vanderbilt and Hearst, she is a designer that has remained in relative obscurity. But that's about to change. The Museum of the City of New York is currently showcasing Valentina's work in an exhibit that runs through May 17th, 2009. A vast array of her work and items from her personal couture collection will be on display and definitely worth a visit. Can't make it? Then the accompanying book by Kohle Yohannan is the next best thing to being there. They're both wonderful eye candy for a vintage fashionista!More information available at mcny.org.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price...
VPOD: Weiss Up
2009-03-09 17:44:00 Albert Weiss founded Albert Weiss & Company Inc. in 1942 and produced some outstanding rhinestone costume jewelry until the company closed its doors in 1971. But fashionistas need to beware. Cheap imitations of Weiss jewelry have been flooding the market in recent years, especially on eBay, so be sure to purchase your Weiss items form reputable dealers.Today's VPOD features a beautiful Weiss plastic and rhinestone clamper bracelet from the 1950s that is just perfect for Spring. Weiss was known for using only the highest quality rhinestones and boy can you tell the difference! It's a sparkling find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Ambers Attic. VPOD: Do You Canvas?
2009-03-06 16:12:00 According to the Worldwatch Institute, 100 billion plastic bags are thrown away in the United States every year. That's why Los Angeles and other cities are voting to ban plastic carryout bags from supermarkets and stores. So it's no surprise that reusable shopping bags have become the rage. But is a bag made in China, shipped from overseas, and made with a plastic that will take longer to decompose than our current disposable plastic bags really all that green?Remember, the environmental mantra is "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle." Not "Produce, Reuse and Recycle." So a far better choice would be today's VPOD. This kitschy little trompe l'oeil canvas tote from Roberta di Camerino sunk its production costs way back in the 1960s. And while it's quite a bit more costly than those reusable plastic bags for sale near the check-outs, it's packed with a whole lot more style and a heap of environmental goodwill. And that makes it an eco-fabulous find for a vintage fashionista!Available fro... VPOD: Poolside Pucci
2009-03-05 15:58:00 Bikini season is a few months away--sooner if you're planning a Spring break. And as you sculpt your body into bikini-worthy shape with diet and exercise, it's nice to know that a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine reports that the type of diet you use to slim down doesn't matter as much as sticking to it. That's right. You can forget yo-yo, crash or fad diets. But it won't make one ounce of difference if you follow Atkins, the Zone, Volumetrics, Weight Watchers, the South Beach Diet, the Sonoma Diet or any others. Like a lot of areas of life, it's persistence that pays off.Well, that plus healthy eating and exercise. One in a million can look like Heidi Klum without effort but the rest of us mortals have to work at it. And if you need just a little more motivation, take a look at today's VPOD.This 1960s Pucci bikini is a fabulous reward for all your hard work. And if bikini season approaches and you still feel like you're 10,000 crunches short, you can ju...
VPOD: For What It's Worth
2009-03-04 15:46:00 Recently a not-so-attractive 1920s train engineer's shirt sold on eBay for $7,100 and a 100-year-old pair of Levi's sold for over $36,000. And while these items might have been rescued from life in a thrift store or landfill, there are many other valuable items that aren't rescued because owners aren't aware of their value.Today's VPOD features a gorgeous 1960s coat by Norman Norell in bubblegum pink. Even without getting up close and personal, you can see this garment just oozes quality. Norell was a master, producing couture quality garments for the ready-to-wear market. But I can imagine a 20-something cleaning out her grandmas's or great-grandma's closet, seeing this label, saying "Norell who?" and tossing it into the Goodwill pile. And thrift stores don't know the value of things either. I once found a Jones of New York dress marked $24.99 while a skimpy little Alaia dangling on the hangar next to it was marked $7.99! So, if you think you might...possibly...could...may... VPOD: Leaning Tower of Lilli
2009-03-03 16:27:00 Snow days! I never thought I'd say this but I miss 'em. Yesterday, my sister's kids were off school and my daughter had a snow day from work due to that nasty blizzard that struck the east coast. And while we don't get any snow days here in LA, that doesn't mean we all don't need them.I mean, aren't they a perfect break from our busy, stressed-out lives? You can't go anywhere and a snowy silence reigns. And as you stare out the window, cuddled beneath a cozy blanket and sipping a cup of steaming cocoa, you get to thinking how every single one of those millions of falling snowflakes are unique. And how you are too.And that sure makes it hard to get out bed the next morning and get dressed in something that had a huge production run, doesn't it? I mean, how unique can you feel when you know there are 100,000 of your dresses walking around. No, when you feel unique, you want to dress uniquely. And there's no better way to do that than with vintage.Take today's VPOD for in... More About: Tower
VPOD: For the Birds
2009-03-02 17:16:00 Contrary to popular belief, lovebirds will not die if not kept in pairs. These colorful parrots, which are native to Africa and Madagascar, are called lovebirds because they have a habit of huddling closely together in the wild and generally behave very lovingly towards each other. Many bird lovers keep lovebirds as pets and the most expensive breeds can cost hundreds of dollars. But if you love the idea of lovebirds and prefer not to hear chirping several hours a day, check out today's VPOD.The lovebirds on this 1970s Mexican embroidered dress prefer to hang out in closets, not cages. And both the hot pink color and the bohemian chic vibe are perfect for spring. It's a fun little find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Greasy Waitress Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Jersey Girl
2009-02-27 16:42:00 Are you a Jersey Girl ? I am! And I didn't grow up in the great state of New Jersey. I just go crazy over jersey dresses. I mean, what's not to love? They're as comfy as can be and they're perfect for packing since you can squeeze about a dozen into an overnight bag.Today's VPOD features a 1970s printed jersey maxi dress that gives all those Bessi's and Leonard's a run for their money. Okaaay, so it's polyester jersey, not silk jersey like a Pucci, but it sure packs a lot of style for a frock that's under $100.And that makes it perfect for a Jersey Girl who's also a vintage fashionista!Available at Kitty Girl Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Boot Me Up
2009-02-26 17:44:00 While a lot of women have visions of tulips and crocuses dancing in their heads, patiently waiting for Spring so they can store their winter coats and break out their sandals and sundresses, true fashionistas have their eyes turned to Fall 2009. Now that Fashion Week has come and gone, it's time to take stock of all the collections and make sense of the Fall 2009 trends. And while you can spend hours scouting out all the fabulous runway shots on the web, fashion editors and bloggers will be happy to do the work for you with their forthcoming roundups of Fall 2009 trends. Of course, no two lists will be the same and when you try to consolidate them you could end up with a trend list that is...well, far too long to process. That's why I subscribe to one and only one Trend Report: my own sense of what I like and what I know works for me. VPOD: Topshelf Texture
2009-02-25 18:26:00 If you look long and hard enough, you can find a vintage version of just about every key trend that might be popular in fashion at any given time. Take today's VPOD for instance. This lovely little frock looks like it could have stepped off a Spring runway but it was actually sculpted way back in the 1950s. Little tufts of silk have been applied over a dress with simple lines to create a softly textured look that is all the rage (and a whole lot less expensive than today's designer versions). It's a topshelf textured find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Posh Girl Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Flower Power
2009-02-24 17:56:00 Last Spring was all about flowers and this Spring is all about...flowers! From chrysanthemums to peonies, Monet-like watercolor prints to oversized abstract patterns, flowers have definitely moved from the garden to the closet.Today's VPOD features a picture-perfect spring dress that is in full bloom. This 1950s floral print frock is easy, breezy and beautiful. Plus I love how the floral print teases the eye with an almost op-art pattern (which just happens to be another key spring look). It's a choice just loaded with flower power for a vintage fashionista!Available at Dorothea's Closet Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: If the Shoe Fits...
2009-02-23 18:44:00 With the economy imploding, it might be time to shop your closet and to make friends with your tailor and cobbler. Not everyone can afford to buy the latest fashions right now, but with a little tweaking and a fraction of the cost, you can transform your old dresses, skirts, shoes and bags into brand new-to-you items.Sure, we gals know that a tailor can shorten a maxi dress to a mini or turn a tired old frock into a sexy strapless number for a few bucks. But not as many gals are aware of all the magic their local cobblers can do. Not only can that friendly neighborhood shoe repair shop turn your thigh-high boots into ankle booties and transform a faded pair of Manolo Blahniks into something shiny and new, they can also dye faded or dirty handbags, replace their straps and upgrade their hardware.Of course, sometimes you luck out and stumble across a fab vintage item that needs no detailing at all. VPOD: The Divine Miss M
2009-02-20 17:30:00 Claire McCardell is perhaps one of the most important American ready-to-wear designers of the twentieth century. And she was a bit revolutionary--interpreting Parisian designs for hard-working American women in inexpensive fabrics. Her first famous design was called the Monastic, and, like many of her clothes, there was very little hangar appeal--it was made to be worn. Valerie Steele, in her book Women of Fashion, said that upon seeing the Monastic, one dress manufacturer shouted "(it's) a dress with no back, no front, no waistline and my God, no bust darts!" Radical? Yes. Popular? Oh, yes!Today's VPOD features another dress attributed to Claire McCardell--one with a bit more detail than the Monastic. Like many vintage dresses, the tags are long gone but the dress belonged to a woman who worked for Hattie Carnegie and Claire McCardell was employed by Hattie Carnegie and so...well, does it really matter? After all, this little black frock has a dramatic neckline and sexy laced bo... More About: Miss , Divine
VPOD: Shoulder the Burden
2009-02-19 17:41:00 Brace yourselves, ladies--shoulder pads are back! Regardless of whether or not you embrace the concept of reincarnation spiritually, there is no doubt that certain looks get reincarnated over and over again in fashion. And since it always seems to happen every twenty years or so, we should have expected all those Dynasty and Dallas inspired looks from the Spring runways. If you were never a huge fan of this shoulder pad scene, then today's VPOD is for you. This Yves Saint Laurent linen blazer from the 1980s offers just enough attention to the shoulders to look chic for Spring without giving you an overdone linebacker look. It's a relevant but wearable find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Yoox.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Seduction at The Museum
2009-02-18 17:52:00 I'm planning a trip to NYC in April and hoping to schedule an excursion over the The Museum at FIT to see Seduction , a chronological survey of over 250 years of sexuality in fashion. There are seventy looks and forty accessories in the exhibit from a rather demure Belle Epoque corset to an over-the-top Galliano skintight black leather evening gown.Today's VPOD features one standout from the exhibit--a 1970s silk jersey evening dress by Halston. Totally S-e-x-y! And you haven't even seen the wrapped back. It's a fine example of just how far fashion has traveled. To think that there was a day when a woman's chest was fully covered and the simple sight of ankles glimpsed under a crinoline was considered shocking! Yes, seduction, that art of temptation and enticement, can be displayed in fashion in both daring and subtle ways. And you can witness many of the finest examples in Seduction from now until June 16, 2009.It's fashion at its finest for a vintage fashionista! For mo...
VPOD: For the Birds
2009-02-17 17:38:00 It's hard enough being an entrepreneur in current times, but imagine the extra difficulties of being a businesswoman in the 1940s. That's why I love the stories of ordinary women (with extraordinary style) who couldn't help but express their creative juices and produce lovely designs that we vintage fashionistas still covet.Margaret Smith is a perfect example. As a local girl in Maine back in the 1940s, she stitched up some funky little beach bags for her friends and ended up stitching up thousands of different handbags over the next few decades. And while Margaret Smith, Inc. shuttered its doors last year, there are still plenty of her colorful, printed bags available. Today's VPOD features a fine 1950s canvas shoulder bag printed with a small flock of songbirds. It's a cheery Spring find for a vintage fashionista!Available at La Pochette.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Around the Colorblock
2009-02-16 18:30:00 Think back to Kindergarten. Remember how there were two groups of kids: the ones who colored inside the lines and the ones who didn't? Regardless of which group you were in, you can surely appreciate the coloring ability of Catherine Ogust in the colorblock dresses she designed for Penthouse. Today's VPOD is a fine example from the 1970s. This polished cotton dress is just bursting with Spring's brightest hues, all of which are kept inside some clean, simple lines and further tamed with a fab obi-style belt. It's a colorful (and affordable) creation that mimics one of Spring's hottest trends for a vintage fashionista!Available at Couture Allure Vintage Fashion.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Be Still My Heart
2009-02-14 17:56:00 Centuries ago, scientists had no idea that the heart pumped blood through our bodies. But they knew their hearts beat a little faster when they were upset or excited or in the presence of their beloveds. And so they naturally concluded that their hearts were the seat of emotions in their bodies. Wrong! We now know, of course, that it's the brain that gives us those butterflies in the stomach and that racing pulse, but we still associate the heart with feelings of love.So on a day that celebrates love in all its shapes and sizes, I've chosen a VPOD that is both sleek and modern while showcasing the eternal symbol of love, the heart. It's a lovely find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Modify.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Golden Girl
2009-02-13 18:12:00 The popularity of all those gossip magazines at the checkout line proves that a whole lot of people are interested in the comings and goings of others. But fashionistas need to be sure they're paying attention to their own comings and goings. No one should be without a full-length mirror and the ability to see a complete view of the back of an outfit before parading in public. And while we tend to pay more attention to what's going on right in front of us, occasionally a frock makes a bigger impression on the takeaway. Today's VPOD is a fine example. This 1960s gold lame evening gown by Frank Usher has a plunging back neckline and extraordinary applique that is stunning both coming and going. It's a golden girl find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage Secret.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Picnic Perfect
2009-02-12 18:41:00 Perhaps one upside to the economy's downside is that folks are re-evaluating how, when and where they spend their time and money. We're re-discovering the value of friends and family instead of worrying about being seen around town with the latest and greatest gadget or with the hippest and hottest bag.Today's VPOD is a 1940s wrap halter dress by Claire McCardell that harkens back to a simpler time before we were all plugged in. I can just picture the woman who owned this dress packing a picnic lunch for the family, piling everyone into the car and spending the day connecting with each other instead of connecting with their iPods, Wii's, or MacBooks.Claire McCardell understood that American women wanted clothing that was practical and functional while still being comfortable and feminine. VPOD: Buzzing Like Neon
2009-02-11 16:39:00 John Mayer has a song which talks about a woman "buzzing just like neon." But this Spring, fashionistas are buzzing about neon.I have to admit this throwback to the 1980s doesn't thrill me--I'm more a neutral kind of gal--but I do love the way just a touch of neon can spice up those neutrals.Take today's VPOD for instance. This vintage tri-color jersey dress by Louis Feraud anchors the bright neons that Spring requires with classic black and a soft cut and drape. It's a bit of Spring zing for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage Couture.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. 2009-02-10 16:28:00 Yes, the economy is in a tailspin but oh, the bargains! Stores are practically giving things away. I don't think I've ever seen so many full page ads from Bloomingdale's that feature the word "SALE." And Macy's is advertising values up to $100 for the low, low price of $4.99!Of course, there are great values in the vintage market as well. For instance, the opening bid on this amazing 1960s two-piece ensemble by Zelinka-Matlick is less than the cost of a magazine subscription! It's mind-boggling that this quality tailoring, this quality midweight wool and sumptuous mink trim, and this amazing construction and detail are available at this price.Forget saving for a rainy day. VPOD: Zip It
2008-10-24 18:24:00 On the finale of The Rachel Zoe Project, Rachel Zoe had picked out two Oscar gowns for Jennifer Garner. One was black and one was nude. And Rachel was pulling for Jennifer to wear the nude choice. Why? Because she feared that all the amazing detail on the black gown would be lost on camera and appear flat and boring when viewed on the screen.Black garments, as a general rule, are notoriously hard to photograph and it's especially important to remember this when shopping online. Remember that what at first glance might appear to be ho-hum on your monitor could actually turn out to be a stunner when you hold the actual garment in your hands.Of course, occasionally a black dress will catch your eye even with these challenges. Today's VPOD is a vintage-wannabe that's less than a decade old but loaded with grown-up style. VPOD: Ushering In Fall
More articles from this author:2008-10-23 18:23:00 One of the problems with shopping for vintage clothing online is the wide variation in the way that computer monitors display color. Maybe that's the reason that a CyberDialog research study showed that 60% of internet shoppers don't trust the color of an item displayed on their screen and about 15% have returned an item because when it arrived its color didn't match the customer's expectations.Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that this problem is going away any time soon. While there are software solutions available to e-commerce sites to help alleviate the problem, most vintage clothing companies are far too small for the investment to make any financial sense. So what's an internet shopping fashionista to do? Well, for one, you can adjust your expectations a bit. Maybe that dress isn't the exact shade of eggshell blue you had hoped for, but then again, it is pretty awesome, it is one-of-a-kind and it is something you never would have stumbled across if you weren't trolli...
