What I did when my parents were away...
2008-05-16 15:43:00 WednesdayWeather: Sunny (26 degrees).Top: Black Cue top bought in Sydney.Bottom: Pencil Skirt bought in Syndey.Shoes: Black peep toes, present from friends.Bag: Gucci Jolicoeur.Accessories: Wolford stay ups and Heart necklace.I always enjoy a dressing up, so I jumped at the chance when I met up with my friends Cindy and Adam for dinner. They told me they were going after work so they would be in their suits, I almost convulsed with glee as I rarely ever have a chance to wear corporate gear, being a non-commerce student at all. So I raided my closet, but went a little bit overboard in the "secretary" look department. When I met up with my friends they glared at me weakly and said, "Mel you look like a PA."That was totally not the look I was going for..."No!!! I'm a divorce lawyer.""No you're not. Divorce lawyers don't dress like that.""How about a PR Exec then?""That might work.""Yay!"So in the end I was still happy with my new found role as a PR Exec. I think I've been watching ... 2008-05-06 15:51:00 FridayWeather: Sunny (27 degrees).Top: Uniqlo white shirt bought in Japan.Bottom: Kookai denim shorts bought in Sydney.Shoes: Chunky black heels bought in Beijing.Bag: That Longchamp bag (Le Pliage) everyone is carrying.Accessories: Brown belt and Tiffany & Co. Open Heart necklace.I wore this for a friend's birthday dinner after spotting some model lounging around in a similar outfit in Harper's Bazaar. Of course copying a model probably does wonders for ones body image, but I was still relishing on the fact that I had lost 4 kilos while I was in China. My skinny friends are all dieting at the moment awaiting their trip to Japan. The skinniest one of them is on a Fruit Diet!!! I almost fainted when I heard that. It's almost as bad as when I go on detox (she can still eat carbs though). However, dieting isn't going well with one of them... she's constantly trying to persuade people to go eat Deep Fried Mars Bars with her... I don't even know what that is! I'm not detoxing... 2008-04-25 18:05:00 MondayWeather: Sunny (25 degrees).Top: Black tank racer back top bought in Sydney and brown button up top (came it a dress) bought in Japan.Bottom: Gripp Skinny Leg Jeans bought in Sydney.Shoes: Chunky black heels bought in Beijing.Bag: Black netted bag, gift.Accessories: D&G white belt bought in Beijing.I have a problem with Jeans... Skinny Leg Jeans in particular. I think they look very very nice, on most people in fact, but they just don't look nice on me. I think it's the way my hips are shaped, my child bearing hips I like to say. Since I'd lost some weight from being in China for 6 weeks (I dislike Chinese food) I was finally able to squeeeeeze back into my only pair of Skinny Leg Jeans that I haven't been able to fit in since my fattening year in Japan. I really wanted to buy a blue pair of Skinny Legs when they did Evisu loves Puma collaboration circa 2006 but unfortunately that was during my Japan weight days and nothing would have fit me then. Beijing Baby!
2008-04-23 14:29:00 Wow I know it's been about a zillion years since I last blogged but I've been so caught up with Uni, work and friends I've barely had time to sit down in front of my computer.Loads have happened during the past month. I know I sounded like I was whining about going to Keio University instead of Peking University in my last post but now I'm extremely extremely happy that I'm going to Keio. It was such a challenge to get into (a Professor had to even vouch for me) and I definitely won't be taking this chance for granted. Having said that I also get to go to Beijing and study an intensive Chinese course at the Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) for 4 weeks right before I go to Japan for my 6 month exchange. So I kind of ended up with the best of both worlds. The only thing is, some of my best girlfriends are leaving for Japan in the beginning of July for a 3 week holiday which means they miss my 21st birthday!!! Holy *a4i&*^% can you believe I'm turning 21?! I mea... More About: Baby , Travelling , Parties , Going Out
Shanghai Baby!
2008-03-20 13:30:00 I know I'm really late with my China posts but you have to realize I'm sloth lazy.As you know I spent a few weeks in Suzhou just hanging out but since it was snowing so hard for the first time in like 85 years, I didn't get to go out as much as I would have liked. Besides there are only two relatively good malls in Suzhou: Taihua (which has almost completed the construction of Suzhou's first Louis Vuitton store) and the Matro shopping mall on Guan Qian Jie (the only shopping street in Suzhou). The real shopping fun began when my cousin Oli, his best friend David and I headed for Shanghai (about an hour drive from Suzhou). We only spent a day there and let me tell you what an exhausting day it was. We managed to shop in over five malls and a mega Zara store and spent a combined total of 20000RMB ($3125AUD).There are definitely some excellent malls and department stores in Shanghai, and since I'm terrible at remembering names I can't tell you what they were called but all you rea... 2008-03-08 15:10:00 ThursdayWeather: Sunny (27 degrees).Top: Red shirt (there are actually tiny black polka dots on the shirt but it's very hard to see) from my mother's old wardrobe.Bottom: High waisted grey shorts from my dad's old wardrobe.Shoes: Chunky black heels bought in Beijing.Bag: Louis Vuitton Pochette.Accessories: Bally black belt. This is one of my few non-headless outfit photos. I just wanted to show off my 90RMB ($15AUD) clip in hair extensions. Who needs the Jessica Simpson ones when you can buy a similar one for one twentieth of the price. While I was in Beijing I raided my mother and father's wardrobes in order to find some wearable "vintage" pieces. I found a few skirts and tops but my favorite has to be my dad's shorts. He was so skinny then! Normally I wouldn't even been able to fit into those shorts but I had lost about 5kgs in China (I don't like Chinese food haha).I think I'm completely and utterly head-over-heels in love with Beijing at them moment. Ahhh!!!
2008-02-23 08:58:00 Let me tell you I've been having the best time in Beijing at the moment. My cousin Oli and his friend also came over to visit for a few days which was excellent as it meant going out every night without my grandparents hassling me about how young girls shouldn't go out alone. At least they think I'm still young.Ok I'll make this post real quick because I'm in Starbucks right now and I've got 12min left on my battery. I'm hating Dell laptops right now!!!My youngest uncle (he's still cool) took me and all my cousins to have steak at Wang Ping a posh little restaurant in Suzhou. The desserts were amazing, especially my fruit punch with dry ice floating out from the bottom.Oli and I being weird again. In Club Scarlett, the only Club in Suzhou with that many young people. When I have more battery power I'll tell you all about the clubs in Beijing. They are so good! More About: Travelling , Clubbing
Lots of Snow.
2008-02-04 08:08:00 I can really feel the holiday mood kick in these days. I'm not doing much except sleeping late, getting up later, shopping and eating. All would be perfect if the temperature raised 30 degrees.I thought I would do some bargain hunting but without realizing (I haven't been converting RMB into AUD very well) the pices for clothes these days are actually quite high. A simple top seems to be at least 500RMB (roughly $80AUD). When did material items become so expensive in China? The other day I bought a skirt for 1200RMB which I regretted later on because I certainly wouldn't have bought the same skirt for $187AUD. Besides that, my stocks plummetted before I was able to sell them (stupid volatile market!!!) so now I'm becoming really poor... thank goodness for the Chinese New Year red pocket. Now one thing I didn't have to buy was this silk dress I pulled out from my grandmother's closet. She had it made for her over a two decades ago and since she couldn't wear it anymore I was ab... More About: Travelling , Snow , Going Out
Finally Out
2008-01-26 07:01:00 I'm in the rather cold computer room right now typing this while my two cousins are behind me battling each other via some invisible wireless connection at Winner Eleven 2008 on their PSPs. They are screaming and shouting at each other... basically being boys playing soccer with their hands.Besides listening to their fasciating insults (I'm learning a lot of Chinese), I'm sitting here smiling because guess who found their camera cord? Yay! I found some photos of Maggie and me having a girls night out before I left for China.I'm looking at those photos missing the warmth of the Sydney sun... gahh!!! I gave my grandparents a call in Beijing a few days ago and they told me it was -10 degrees celsius there... that's crazy~~~ How am I going to survive?! I think I suit living in Singapore better.Yesterday I went to do some hardcore shopping with my cousins. I had to buy some makeup remover so I went into a shop my second cousin's girlfriend always visits. The shop assistant were nic... More About: Travelling , Clubbing , Finally
1st Week
2008-01-21 12:58:00 You won't believe how I spent my first week in Suzhou, China.I've spent my first week in bed! Sniffling and sneezing with nothing but bad Chinese day time TV and a February 2008 copy of Vogue China to keep me company.I haven't even had a chance to go out and scout the city for clothes and other items that are highly desirable. Even worse my grandparents are staying at my house in Suzhou which means constant (and cosistant I may add) nagging and worrying about whether or not I've had enough to eat or if I'm cold. All I do is lie in bed with my electric blanket on and eat all day, how can I possibly be hungry or cold?! Ahh, grandparents... they are darlings but sometimes it can be just a little too much for a teenager to handle (and yes, I'm still a teenager -_-;;).Also I've made a big booboo with my packing and forgot to bring the cord that connects my laptop with my camera, which means no photos for my all new travel blog entries =( I'll see what my cousin can do for me but ... I really do love Sydney, it's so beautiful, yet at the same time I can't stand the quietness of such a large city. That's why I like New Years Eve, I can finally feel the city come to life.I also met up with my friend Dave who had just come back from studying in Beijing. I have learnt things from these inspiration bibles. For example, I've learnt a great deal on how to pose to make you look tall and thin from examining red carpet photos. One of the photo secrets I'll share with everyone is how to look the best from a front on pose. What you do is you stand up straight, slant your hips forward and lean all your body weight into the front leg. Then you lift up the heel of the back foot to add height and length to you legs (especially if you're not wearing heels). You can probably see my back foot raised in this outfits photo, but if you do this more carefully, no one will be able to ... More About: Family , Fashion , Travelling , Designer , Budget

Looking Back
2007-12-17 15:03:00 Looking back at this year I realized I had a pretty bad first half, while the second half really lightened up. As I always say, "you won't know what happiness is unless you've felt sadness."In a January post I wrote about 5 things I wanted to achieve during 2007. In May, I hadn't achieved any of them, but now in mid-December I realized I've done 3 out of the 5 things.1) A boyfriend. (X)2) A drivers license. (O)3) A new job. (O)4) Distinction Average. (O)5) Lose 5 kilos. (X)No I don't have a boyfriend, but I haven't really been actively looking either. I think I was so influenced by my Japanese school friends, that having a boyfriend felt like it would play a big part in my life. I was so envious of my friends in Sydney who were having their 1 year, 3 year, 6 year anniversaries, but unfortunately most of them have now broken up. Single is still the best.I finally got my P's which means I am finally able to drive on my own. If only I had taken the initiative to find a driving i... ????????????????
2007-12-11 12:59:00 I was listening to all the songs I used to listen to when I was in Japan and Hitoto You's (???) Hanamizuki (?????) came up and I just burst into tears. My heart shatters every time I hear the lyrics:"????????????????""I hope you and the person you love will continue for 100 years."I have never been in a situation like that, nor would I ever want to, but I think if that were to ever happen, I'll be the type who would want to let go of the person I love if they were in love with another girl. I would probably eat through a dozen boxes of Ferrero Rocher and put Hanamizuki song on repeat, but at least I would know that he was happy. Being annoying or a hinderance to someone I care about is one of my greatest fears. AHHH!!! There is something wrong with me! Must be the PMS pushing out the revoltingly emotional side of me.(-_-;;)Chu ? Mel More About: Music , Love

He danced uninhibited on a busy city bound train. Two individuals, both foreign to this land chatted away excitedly. The doors on the train closed and began its journey back to the station where they came from. The train was already half way across the Harbour Bridge before they realized. They laughed. These are the stories I noticed on the train.* * * * * *I've finally decided to go as a Stepford Wife for tomorrow's party. Pool Cleaning
2007-11-27 13:13:00 My mattered fringe plastered onto my face as tiny sprinkles of rain began to fall. Attempting to stand firm on thin heels I peered down into the water searching for leaves. I had promised my father that I would take over his household duties while he was overseas. Some of these duties included paying the bills, driving my sister to tutoring and cleaning the pool. Little did I know how much skill was required in the exquisite art of pool cleaning. There was a certain force needed in your wrist to make the leaves float up before catching them in your net. I had stood at the edge of the pool for over half an hour trying to remove the stubborn remains of fallen leaves. The weight of the pole left me uncomfortably tired as I waddled around trying my best not to fall in.It was at the forty minute mark when my sister quietly took out my camera and snapped a candid photo. She then ran out laughing and shouting, "what idiot wears heels and a pencil skirt when cleaning the pool?!"In my defens... More About: Cleaning , Pool , Amusing
Costume Party
2007-11-26 13:03:00 I'm going to a friend's 21st in a few weeks and the theme is "sexual fantasies". Blogging
2007-11-21 06:24:00 I haven't written one of these in a long time. For a while I felt that there was something lacking, perhaps it was inspiration, or it could have been motivation, but the likely answer is both of them combined with a hint of exhaustion. Life had became a routine of uni, work, homework, tv and sleep, I felt no need to make any type of commentary on such mundane things. I didn't want to be "that" type of blogger who pours their hearts out over the internet describing each and every situation in a long winded analysis of their feelings and deep thoughts... oh the melodrama... oh the angst! I could have easily slipped into "that" category being a sporadic drama queen, but at the same time I didn't just want to be "that" other type of blogger who just posts up photos with not much else to say, except " well... like... I went to this party on like Saturday night, and it rocked liked totally" . When I realized I had become "that" I needed a break to consider whether I should continue bl... More About: Blogging
'A million girls would kill for this chance'
2007-11-07 15:33:00 I found this article while searching internships for various magazines. Interesting read indeed. From The TimesJuly 10, 2006A million girls would kill for this chanceAn ex-intern at Vogue, tells her storyAmy OliverThe most ridiculous thing I had to do during my three-month internship at American Vogue was to order a blacked-out company limo to chauffeur a plate of cold turkey sausages about a mile to the Hermès showroom. My boss, fashion assistant to one of the more prestigious editors and furiously feisty to boot, thought nothing of spending close to $100 ferrying sausages, or anything else for that matter, around Manhattan. There was no pay, the work was menial in the extreme and yet a million girls would kill for the chance. Yes, what follows is my very own version of The Devil Wears Prada, Lauren Weisberger?s fictionalised account of one girl?s baptism of fire working for an American glossy, and now a film starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. The internship, advertised ... 2007-11-02 15:35:00 My bandwidth completely died on the 29th, and being the impatient girl I am I couldn't stand to sit there in front of my computer waiting for things to load at modem (circa 1997) speeds, so I just didn't go on at all. This in turn made me miss a few events planned on my Facebook as well as a few important emails from Uni and work. Life seems to fall in chaos without the internet doesn't it? Thank the technology God for mobile phones, at least I was still contactable, so I didn't miss out on anything too important (like the JT concert! *dies*) and my phone rang, so I turned it off an apologized to my lovely doctor. He grinned at me then said, "diabolical creations they are.""I actually find them quite useful," I replied. And with that he stabbed my arm with the needle. Now what is a diabolical creation is fast food. The Chop.
2007-10-01 14:52:00 I haven't vanished, my sister had just used up September's bandwidth on the 25th, and being as impatient as I am, I couldn't be bothered waiting for images to load at dial up speed. So I abstained from the internet for over 5 days. Woo! Go me!Anyway last Friday I finally went for the chop (refer to post All About Hair). I would like to say I was brave and confident about getting a new look but truthfully I was extremely nervous. I'm generally nervous about change. Maybe I'm just old fashioned. The thing was, I kept getting flashbacks of a horror cut a few years back in which I just wanted some nice soft layers but the hairdressers gave me a mullet. I remember crying at my reflection in the mirror. That was my first (and hopefully last) time crying over a haircut.I opted to get my haircut at Luc Espace (pronounced luke air-sparse) in Chatswood Chase this time. Britney
2007-09-24 17:07:00 I got my haircut on Friday and I made it shorter than I anticipated. I have to say I love it though. Will share the photos very soon. I just got back from Hunter Valley so I'll do a proper post tomorrow. I love Seth Green, I've loved him ever since I saw that movie with him and Jennifer Love Hewitt in it... what was it called, something about a Party?I've never been a Britney Spears fan because I never thought she could actually sing. I used to get annoyed because back in the day (when she wore a modified school uniform around), they compared her to Christina Aguilera. I could never comprehend how these two singers could even be compared with each other. Sure, their image may have been similar back in the early 2000's but Christina has the most amazing voice. These days however, I feel so... More About: Music
Another Fashion Icon
2007-09-20 17:41:00 I did a post about Fash ion Icon s a month or so back and I'm kicking myself now for forgetting to include the gorgeous and talented Mika Nakashima, a Japanese singer, actress and style icon.I love a woman who is capable of trying out extremely different styles and pulling them all off. Most of the time Mika does the typical Japanese-girl-in-her-mid-20's style where she wears knee length skirts, footless tights, flats and a baggy top layered on top of a tank. And although she still looks good I am much more inspired and amazed by her whole layers of tulle, chiffon and lace look as well as her punk rock style which she experimented with during her Nana (she played the character Nana in the film of the same name based on the manga of the same name) stage. Below are a few pictures of my favorite Mika Nakashima looks. My favorite is perhaps the last picture on the right. Aprons
2007-09-17 16:35:00 They say you can find fashion inspiration from nearly everywhere. I think they may be right. My latest obsession comes in the form of aprons, and before I knew it I was finding inspiration from "adult" costumes sites. Apart from the obvious skankiness, the vinyl and the "ewwww..." factor, I quite like the apron, high socks and petticoats look when they exude an Alice in Wonderland/Lolita cuteness about them. There are definitely a few things you have to ignore in these pictures.I think my initial obsession for aprons came from reading the manga Paradise Kiss (see posts Paradise Kiss + NANA Inspirations and I cry like a baby.) and Gokinjo Monogatari both by Ai Yazawa. Fashion design are main themes in both these mangas and the Happy Berry brand (within the mangas) pulls aprons, big skirts, petticoats, strawberries, cuteness, Lolita, big ribbons, white lace and pink together very nicely. How can you not love something so cute? I wish the "Happy Berry" brand really did exist.I've also g... More About: Manga , Anime , Apron
