I have spent almost three years writing in this blog and I've enjoyed every moment of it. However for the past few months I have really felt the lack of motivation that I once had while blogging (I think it shows through my writing and my infrequent updates). So, on Christmas day of 2008 I've decided to move on and focus on other hobbies (maybe Age of the Empires II, I've been playing that game way too much recently haha *nerd*).This is going to be my last post on Beijing Baby! and I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has read my blog for the past three years, and to those who have commented, emailed and supported me throughout this entire time. Thank you so much! I would not have had this fun if it wasn't for all of you.I started this blog just a little before my first exchange to Japan, and now that I'm nearing the end of my second exchange I think it's a good time to finish. Coincidentally this is also going to be the last semester I study Japanese. Having st...

I know it's been a long time since I last blogged and I do apologize, but I've had a few computer problems. Ever since I bought my laptop (in late 2006), it has never had an anti-virus program. I know it's stupid to not install one but I've always been too lazy. Anyway, for 2 years nothing has entered my computer but as I was downloading the new series "90210" (I'm so embarrassed), a virus attacked my poor computer (it was a stupid show anyway, I didn't even watch more than two episodes). So I had to re-installed windows... and I do have an anti-virus program now.I also bought myself a 650GB hardrive in Akihabara the other day. I have to find enough things to fill it with.Besides that I have made myself a new blog. Yes, that's why I haven't been blogging lately it wasn't because I was lazy at all. It's mostly a fashion blog that is written both in Chinese and English (I have to practice my Chinese), so please visit and bookmark Girl in a Scarlet Dress, I think I will updat...

I been going for jogs in the middle of the night with my friends who live in the same apartment as I do. We go jogging along the Yagami River but when it's one in the morning it can be very very scary. Now Japan is a country that has one of highest suicide rates in the world, and jumping off a bridge isn't an uncommon way to commit suicide. So as we were running along the river, we had to cross many bridges and two of them had flowers tired around the poles. One of my friends also mentioned someone committed suicide on one particular bridge we happened to run across. Now this wasn't exactly the happiest thing to be talking about when it's the middle of the night, dead quiet (except for the sound of the river) and extremely dark! I was certainly freaked out! However the run was worth it though, I felt so much better afterwards (I had burgers that evening -_-;;).I know I talked about burgers in my last post (as well) but I have been making home cooked meals as well.1. Cooking past...

Tokyo Welcomes You
2008-09-29 14:02:00
Despite my whines about not being in Beijing anymore, I am absolutely high on Tokyo . I have this little apartment that is so completely tiny yet very cozy. Honestly I think that's all the space I need anyway. I'm usually not home half the time and when I am, I just sit on my bed watching movies and Gossip Girl Season 2 (YEAH!).My room looks a bit messy in the photo because it was taken on the second day I moved in so I was still attempting to unpack. Don't judge my neatness by this photo -_-;;The little kitchen and laundry. The front door and hallway. The size of my apartment is probably only the size of my room at home (plus the bathroom maybe) but I love it. It's the first time I really feel independent. What's more is that I have actually bought a pan and kettle and I'm cooking for myself. My friends definitely should be proud of me, I'm turning into a domestic goddess! (Although I do cook noodles and pasta in my kettle... just don't tell anyone).Classes started last Thursd...

I miss Beijing!
2008-09-17 08:50:00
I know this post has arrived weeks overdue, but you have to understand the pain of setting up bank accounts, buying a new mobile phone, getting your alien registration sorted and going to various orientations. The first week I arrived in Japan I went to Numazu, Shizuoka to visit my old host family. It felt like I had never left. All the feelings of being thankful and slightly uncomfortable at the same time came rushing back at me. It was great to be able to see everyone again, but also knowing I would be out on my own in weeks time really kept me energetic and happy. So now I'm alone in Tokyo (besides the new friends I made in my apartment) and I really love it. I love being able to do what I want, whenever I want without really needing to consider anyone else besides my own selfish needs.I've been to Keio University several times for orientations and an exam. It's a small campus (compared to my USYD) but it's a beautiful place (especially the East gate) . The past few days I've...

Okay, I wrote this post about two weeks ago before I left to go to Suzhou and Shanghai, so it may seem a little old, especially now that I'm back in Beijing .Studying Chinese in Beijing during the 2008 Beijing Olympics is probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. The atmosphere is great. I love the Olympics, it's the only time I can spend all day watching sport without anyone nagging me, as everyone is doing the same thing. My favorite things to watch are of course my favorite sports, the Men's Basketball, Women's Volleyball and the Men's Tennis. I also always watch the Diving, Gymnastics and Track & Field but I've also developed a new liking to Fencing. A few day ago my friend Han and I went shopping at the Dongwuyuan Fuzhuan Pifa Shichang (the Zoo Fashion Markets). Although there was a large selection of clothes and everything was super cheap (20, 30RMB anyone? = AUD$3.5, $4.70), the clothes were so horrendously ugly that I wouldn't wear any of it even if they ...

So much has happened since I last blogged. I now have long hair, lost 2 kilograms of weight and most surprisingly a shoujo manga like storyline has surfaced. The first is due to a magical thing called extensions, the second is due to my dislike of Chinese food and the third... well, it's complicated.Sometime last week I went to have dinner with my oldest cousin and my grandparents. We went to a place called, "Hai Di Lao" which roughly means "Scoop Under the Sea". It's a popular hot pot restaurant and the "Scoop Under the Sea" comes from the act of scooping the bottom of the hot pot for meat/vegetables and other wonderful things. My first cousin and I at the restaurant.Look, I have hair!!!They have waiters who make noodles from a piece of dough. These guys dance and do all sort of acrobatics while making it.Our hot pot. It was very very spicy. My cousin and I outside the restaurant.Last Saturday night I went to the GongTi Xi Lu clubs with my French friends from Uni. We first went to ...

Beijing Summer
2008-07-28 10:06:00
Here I am in Beijing ... in Starbucks, again. I heard that there was going to be free wireless connection in the city during the Olympics but obviously it hasn't started yet. So now I am forced to drink overpriced black tea and ice cubes just to use the net. Oh well, at least the connection is fast.It is so very hot and humid here. A stark contrast from the SNOW (very very light flaky snow, but snow nonetheless) that swept over the Sydney's North Shore this afternoon. Snow in Sydney??!! That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. I'm going to ask my sister if she saw any.I have to wake up at 5:30am every morning to get to class (I'm studying Chinese at Beijing Language and Culture University at the moment) because the University is so far away from my house. I live East, close to the city but the University is North West outside the 4th ring (the city of Beijing is surrounded by rings with Tiananmen Square being the center. The 2nd ring is the ring that basically surrounds the C...

Taiwan & Thailand
2008-07-12 17:28:00
I wrote up a quick entry for my last post as I was just about to hop on a plane to go to Taiwan and later Thailand . It seems I have returned from my tropical journey and all I can say is Sydney is damn cold! I really hate the cold, but I don't mind New York or Beijing kind of cold because at least that means 24 hour heating. Shanghai or Sydney cold isn't actually cold enough to have that kind of heating and using the air con non stop is such a waste of energy, and thus I am cold at home as well as cold outside. So I have to say I thoroughly loved my tropical holiday in Taiwan and Thailand. My first stop was Taipei, Taiwan where my family and I stayed for 2 days. We went to the Night Markets on the first night which was a lot of fun. The Night Markets are just roads of small food, clothes and accessories stalls. Bargaining is a must there, but you can't bargain off a lot though since they prices are already quite cheap. I was trying to put on a Taiwanese accent while bargaining but...

Uber Quick Post
2008-06-30 13:13:00
This is a uber quick post for two reasons. 1) My bandwidth is kaput, 2) I need to pack and 3) I need to paint my nails a nice bright shade of pink. Okay that was three reasons, the last one came up in an epiphany of nail polish fumes. So apart from EXAMS! These have been my activities for the last week.SundayWent shopping with Dave for a tie. We found a nice one in Louis Vuitton then we moved onto other shops. Since I was still sulking about sacrificing my Chanel I went to buy a Fendi to cheer myself up. I guess it was my 21st birthday present to myself. I sound like such a brat but I'm only bratty over bags.Dave and I also checked out the new Apple Store that just opened in Sydney on George St. It's really quite big, but I'm a PC girl myself. Blah.TuesdaySince I have no life I went to the Sydney Flashmob Freeze. It was so much fun, best 3 minutes of my life. My friend caught us on video, hopefully she'll post it up soon. They said there were 2200 people who attended this event a...

How I love the Chanel 2.55
2008-06-19 10:34:00
My step into adulthood aka my 21st (18 years and 36 months dear) will be on the 3 July 2008. It's weird because I still think of myself as a teenager the majority of the time. When I was looking to join a basketball team a few months back I initially clicked on the under 18's section, until dreaded reality hit and I realized how much I had aged. I think my scary age is 25 years old. Not because it's old or anything like that, but it's the age that I've set for myself to actually grow up. It's the age in which I should have a steady job (one that I like), a serious boyfriend, have bought my own home (along with a mortgage unless I win the $50 million Powerball jackpot) and have taken full responsibility of my life. Of course I have another 4 years to just relax, act childish and have fun.A few weeks back my parents asked me what I wanted for my 21st birthday. Without one hesitation in my mind I screamed, "Chanel 2.55!!!" I wanted the classic size, black lambskin (although I was...

Japan Exchange Q&A
2008-06-08 17:52:00
Many people have been asking me about my 2006 exchange program to Japan as well as my up and coming 2008 exchange to Japan, so I've decided to compile some of the questions and just answer them here in one go. If you have anymore questions, you can comment or email me at beijingbaby11@gmail.com.Just a little background, I did my 2006 exchange to Numazu, Japan as a high school exchange student and I'm going to Keio University in Tokyo as a University exchange student in September this year.Q: Did you finish high school in Australia before you went on your 2006 exchange?A: Yes, I finished high school in Sydney (end of 2005), then I deferred my university placement and went on exchange to a Japanese high school in Numazu (March 2006-January 2007). When I returned the next year, I began my university studies in Sydney (March 2007).Q: What problems did you face when you were there?A: Apart from the normal problematic situations like missing my friends and family I also felt felt that m...

Open Heart necklace and black braces bought in Tokyo, Japan. It's important to wear good flat shoes while going shopping at the markets. There's so much wet grass it's disgusting. I was also freezing in my shorts that morning since we had to get there so early, good thing I bought a jacket.Anyway, if anyone came in contact with me on Monday night then they would have spoken with a girl on the brink of complete insanity. My mother thought I had been possessed by the devil when she saw me walking down the hall chanting, "???????? and ?????????". I felt like I had to memorize an absolute paramount number of vocab I will never ever use in real life situations for my Chinese exam. The funny thing is, I speak fluent Chinese which indicates how high our teach...

They told me they were going after work so they would be in their suits, I almost convulsed with glee as I rarely ever have a chance to wear corporate gear, being a non-commerce student at all. So I raided my closet, but went a little bit overboard in the "secretary" look department. When I met up with my friends they glared at me weakly and said, "Mel you look like a PA."That was totally not the look I was going for..."No!!! I'm a divorce lawyer.""No you're not. Divorce lawyers don't dress like that.""How about a PR Exec then?""That might work.""Yay!"So in the end I was still happy with my new found role as a PR Exec. I think I've been watching ...

Open Heart necklace.I wore this for a friend's birthday dinner after spotting some model lounging around in a similar outfit in Harper's Bazaar. Of course copying a model probably does wonders for ones body image, but I was still relishing on the fact that I had lost 4 kilos while I was in China. My skinny friends are all dieting at the moment awaiting their trip to Japan. The skinniest one of them is on a Fruit Diet!!! I almost fainted when I heard that. It's almost as bad as when I go on detox (she can still eat carbs though). However, dieting isn't going well with one of them... she's constantly trying to persuade people to go eat Deep Fried Mars Bars with her... I don't even know what that is! I'm not detoxing...

Skinny Leg Jeans in particular. I think they look very very nice, on most people in fact, but they just don't look nice on me. I think it's the way my hips are shaped, my child bearing hips I like to say. Since I'd lost some weight from being in China for 6 weeks (I dislike Chinese food) I was finally able to squeeeeeze back into my only pair of Skinny Leg Jeans that I haven't been able to fit in since my fattening year in Japan. I really wanted to buy a blue pair of Skinny Legs when they did Evisu loves Puma collaboration circa 2006 but unfortunately that was during my Japan weight days and nothing would have fit me then. Wow I know it's been about a zillion years since I last blogged but I've been so caught up with Uni, work and friends I've barely had time to sit down in front of my computer.Loads have happened during the past month. I know I sounded like I was whining about going to Keio University instead of Peking University in my last post but now I'm extremely extremely happy that I'm going to Keio. It was such a challenge to get into (a Professor had to even vouch for me) and I definitely won't be taking this chance for granted. Having said that I also get to go to Beijing and study an intensive Chinese course at the Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) for 4 weeks right before I go to Japan for my 6 month exchange. So I kind of ended up with the best of both worlds. The only thing is, some of my best girlfriends are leaving for Japan in the beginning of July for a 3 week holiday which means they miss my 21st birthday!!! Holy *a4i&*^% can you believe I'm turning 21?! I mea...

I know I'm really late with my China posts but you have to realize I'm sloth lazy.As you know I spent a few weeks in Suzhou just hanging out but since it was snowing so hard for the first time in like 85 years, I didn't get to go out as much as I would have liked. Besides there are only two relatively good malls in Suzhou: Taihua (which has almost completed the construction of Suzhou's first Louis Vuitton store) and the Matro shopping mall on Guan Qian Jie (the only shopping street in Suzhou). The real shopping fun began when my cousin Oli, his best friend David and I headed for Shanghai (about an hour drive from Suzhou). We only spent a day there and let me tell you what an exhausting day it was. We managed to shop in over five malls and a mega Zara store and spent a combined total of 20000RMB ($3125AUD).There are definitely some excellent malls and department stores in Shanghai, and since I'm terrible at remembering names I can't tell you what they were called but all you rea...

I just wanted to show off my 90RMB ($15AUD) clip in hair extensions. Who needs the Jessica Simpson ones when you can buy a similar one for one twentieth of the price. While I was in Beijing I raided my mother and father's wardrobes in order to find some wearable "vintage" pieces. I found a few skirts and tops but my favorite has to be my dad's shorts. He was so skinny then! Normally I wouldn't even been able to fit into those shorts but I had lost about 5kgs in China (I don't like Chinese food haha).I think I'm completely and utterly head-over-heels in love with Beijing at them moment. Let me tell you I've been having the best time in Beijing at the moment. My cousin Oli and his friend also came over to visit for a few days which was excellent as it meant going out every night without my grandparents hassling me about how young girls shouldn't go out alone. At least they think I'm still young.Ok I'll make this post real quick because I'm in Starbucks right now and I've got 12min left on my battery. I'm hating Dell laptops right now!!!My youngest uncle (he's still cool) took me and all my cousins to have steak at Wang Ping a posh little restaurant in Suzhou. The desserts were amazing, especially my fruit punch with dry ice floating out from the bottom.Oli and I being weird again. In Club Scarlett, the only Club in Suzhou with that many young people. When I have more battery power I'll tell you all about the clubs in Beijing. They are so good!

I can really feel the holiday mood kick in these days. I'm not doing much except sleeping late, getting up later, shopping and eating. All would be perfect if the temperature raised 30 degrees.I thought I would do some bargain hunting but without realizing (I haven't been converting RMB into AUD very well) the pices for clothes these days are actually quite high. A simple top seems to be at least 500RMB (roughly $80AUD). When did material items become so expensive in China? The other day I bought a skirt for 1200RMB which I regretted later on because I certainly wouldn't have bought the same skirt for $187AUD. Besides that, my stocks plummetted before I was able to sell them (stupid volatile market!!!) so now I'm becoming really poor... thank goodness for the Chinese New Year red pocket. Now one thing I didn't have to buy was this silk dress I pulled out from my grandmother's closet. She had it made for her over a two decades ago and since she couldn't wear it anymore I was ab...

I'm in the rather cold computer room right now typing this while my two cousins are behind me battling each other via some invisible wireless connection at Winner Eleven 2008 on their PSPs. They are screaming and shouting at each other... basically being boys playing soccer with their hands.Besides listening to their fasciating insults (I'm learning a lot of Chinese), I'm sitting here smiling because guess who found their camera cord? Yay! I found some photos of Maggie and me having a girls night out before I left for China.I'm looking at those photos missing the warmth of the Sydney sun... gahh!!! I gave my grandparents a call in Beijing a few days ago and they told me it was -10 degrees celsius there... that's crazy~~~ How am I going to survive?! You won't believe how I spent my first week in Suzhou, China.I've spent my first week in bed! Sniffling and sneezing with nothing but bad Chinese day time TV and a February 2008 copy of Vogue China to keep me company.I haven't even had a chance to go out and scout the city for clothes and other items that are highly desirable. Even worse my grandparents are staying at my house in Suzhou which means constant (and cosistant I may add) nagging and worrying about whether or not I've had enough to eat or if I'm cold. All I do is lie in bed with my electric blanket on and eat all day, how can I possibly be hungry or cold?! Ahh, grandparents... they are darlings but sometimes it can be just a little too much for a teenager to handle (and yes, I'm still a teenager -_-;;).Also I've made a big booboo with my packing and forgot to bring the cord that connects my laptop with my camera, which means no photos for my all new travel blog entries =( I'll see what my cousin can do for me but ...

I have learnt things from these inspiration bibles. For example, I've learnt a great deal on how to pose to make you look tall and thin from examining red carpet photos. One of the photo secrets I'll share with everyone is how to look the best from a front on pose. What you do is you stand up straight, slant your hips forward and lean all your body weight into the front leg. Then you lift up the heel of the back foot to add height and length to you legs (especially if you're not wearing heels). You can probably see my back foot raised in this outfits photo, but if you do this more carefully, no one will be able to ...

Looking Back
2007-12-17 15:03:00
Looking back at this year I realized I had a pretty bad first half, while the second half really lightened up. As I always say, "you won't know what happiness is unless you've felt sadness."In a January post I wrote about 5 things I wanted to achieve during 2007. In May, I hadn't achieved any of them, but now in mid-December I realized I've done 3 out of the 5 things.1) A boyfriend. (X)2) A drivers license. (O)3) A new job. (O)4) Distinction Average. (O)5) Lose 5 kilos. (X)No I don't have a boyfriend, but I haven't really been actively looking either. I think I was so influenced by my Japanese school friends, that having a boyfriend felt like it would play a big part in my life. I was so envious of my friends in Sydney who were having their 1 year, 3 year, 6 year anniversaries, but unfortunately most of them have now broken up. Single is still the best.I finally got my P's which means I am finally able to drive on my own. If only I had taken the initiative to find a driving i...

Hanamizuki (?????) came up and I just burst into tears. My heart shatters every time I hear the lyrics:"????????????????""I hope you and the person you love will continue for 100 years."I have never been in a situation like that, nor would I ever want to, but I think if that were to ever happen, I'll be the type who would want to let go of the person I love if they were in love with another girl. I would probably eat through a dozen boxes of Ferrero Rocher and put Hanamizuki song on repeat, but at least I would know that he was happy. Being annoying or a hinderance to someone I care about is one of my greatest fears. AHHH!!! There is something wrong with me! Must be the PMS pushing out the revoltingly emotional side of me.(-_-;;)Chu ? Mel

He threw up his hands swinging wildly in time with the music that was pounding through his earphones. He danced uninhibited on a busy city bound train. Two individuals, both foreign to this land chatted away excitedly. The doors on the train closed and began its journey back to the station where they came from. The train was already half way across the Harbour Bridge before they realized. They laughed. These are the stories I noticed on the train.* * * * * *I've finally decided to go as a Stepford Wife for tomorrow's party. I've been searching the net for style, makeup and hairstyle inspirations.Chu ? Mel
