Unbelievable - People Love Cell Phones As Much As Internet
2007-05-02 17:13:00
Jacobs Media has released the results of their 2007 Tech Survey on Cell Phones . Despite some people thinking that the cell phone is the worst invention ever, the Jacobs Media survey tells us that for ages 18-34, they rate cell phones as high as the Internet for tech they can't live without! That really is surprising to me since I could easily do without a cell phone but would have no idea what to do with myself if there wasn't the Internet. Also, while the cell phone manufacturers keep including more and more features on their cell phone offerings, the top 3 features are text messaging, calculator (!), and taking pictures. I'm very surprised that "listening to mp3's" is near the bottom. My impression is that the cell phone companies are really focusing on the mp3 feature (now that every phone can take pictures) and there's some fantastic mp3 phones out now like the Sony Ericsson W880i.Finally, what is interesting is the percentage of people who only have a cell phone and no long...

Don't Let Scammers Hijack Your Site
2007-04-30 15:24:00
In a previous post, I talked about getting rid of MFA sites. I just dislike the thought of a visitor to ProductCritic wanting to read digital camera reviews and clicking on an ad they think they want more information about only to reach a "made for adsense" site that just leeches clicks from ProductCritic visitors who are looking for genuinely helpful information. But, blocking MFA sites isn't enough. In the niche that ProductCritic sits in, many of the adsense ads shown are from sites selling cameras and camera supplies. Unfortunately, there are quite a few instances of these camera stores running scams of various sorts. Some of these scams (and how to avoid them) are described very well by Photo.net and Bob Atkins.I don't like the idea of some scam store using ProductCritic as a vehicle for scamming innocent visitors to our site. So, while it takes some extra effort, I pay attention to the ads that are being displayed on ProductCritic and, in addition to looking for MFA sites, wh...

Get More Complete Web Analysis With Performancing
2007-04-27 09:18:00
We use Google Analytics to get stats on visitors and pageviews for ProductCritic. Late last month, we signed onto Perform ancing. Although their tagline is "Helping Bloggers Succeed", it's useful for all sites like our Digital Camera Reviews site which is not a blog. I had been meaning to write a blog entry about it but by coincidence, today, I noticed that Performancing has a blog entry up that will provide pMetrics free for 12 months for a review. Great timing!Although I think Google Analytics is pretty complete, the additional features of Performancing are a really good companion to Analytics. Here's a walkthrough of Performancing.First of all, when you go to Performancing.com, it takes you to their blog. I don't quite understand that. The value of their site is in pMetrics, not the blog! They should really take you to the value part of their site by default. Instead, you have to click a top link (labelled "pMetrics") to even find the good stuff (not that the blog is bad at all...

Most Insane Tourist Photographer Ever
2007-04-24 15:38:00
I've travelled fairly extensively and as a tourist, you know that you usually only have a limited time in any one spot and you want to get the best photos that you can. When I read this post about an ultimate crazy cameraman at the Grand Canyon, it was hard for me to even imagine what must be going on in this guy's mind to go to these lengths to get a shot (especially when it looks like you don't really need to - why not just take the shot on the higher outcropping?) The shot below is the crazy cameraman's leap to the safer rock...with camera and tripod in his left hand.Luckily, DigiSniper added a PS at the bottom of the post that gives you the whole story. Great stuff!

Cell Phone Market Growth Slowing In 2007
2007-04-23 15:07:00
Cell phone sales growth increased by 10% in the first quarter of 2007 over the same quarter in 2006. Still, this healthy 10% growth could not keep up with the previous quarter.IDC has published a new press release showing that so far, 2007 probably won't keep up with the record cell phone sales of 2006 which saw an amazing 20% year-on-year growth in each quarter of that year. The release states, "this reflects IDC's expectations that as more subscribers are added to the network, fewer new subscribers are left to be added".The release also provides the Top 5 Cell Phone vendors in this order:NokiaMotorolaSamsungSony EricssonLG ElectronicsSamsung and Sony Ericsson benefitted from Motorola's missteps by posting a year-on-year growth with Sony Ericsson showing the largest growth. It's interesting to compare this to ProductCritic's cell phone reviews. While Samsung phones have only had quite average reviews, the latest crop of Sony Ericsson phones are mostly getting quite good marks ...

Top 10 Digital Camera Mistakes
2007-04-19 15:36:00
The Photo Mentor has a post describing the Top 10 Digital Camera Mist akes. I'm summarizing below:More Pixels Doesn't Mean Better PicturesDon't Use Digital ZoomTake The Highest Resolution Pics You CanHave An Extra BatteryOptical Viewfinder Isn't What The Camera SeesBe A TripodThe LCD Is MisleadingMore Pixels Are Better At High ISOYou Can't Always Fix In PhotoshopPrinting At Home Doesn't Save MoneyMost of these mistakes are geared towards people who have just bought their first digital camera (how many of you are there?) but I think everyone should pay attention to mistake #10 as it's easy to think that you should print out all your pics just because today's printer, ink, and paper produce such great results.
The Latest Top 10 Cell Phone Rankings From PC World

PC World has recently updated their Top 10 Cell Phone s. Here they are listed below along with the score given by PC World and the ProductCritic Score:RIM Blackberry Pearl - 85 (ProductCritic Score = 83)Sony Ericsson W810 - 84 (ProductCritic Score = 87)Motorola RIZR Z3 - 83 (ProductCritic Score = 75)Mororola RAZR V3i - 81 (ProductCritic Score = 81)Samsung SCH-u740 - 81Nokia 5300 - 80 (ProductCritic Score = 82)Sony Ericsson W300i - 80 (ProductCritic Score = 79)LG EnV - 79 (ProductCritic Score = 81)T-Mobile SDA - 79Samsung UpStage - 79Except for the Motorola RIZR, the ratings given by PC World sync up pretty well with the aggregate scores from ProductCritic. The front of my cell phone is all cracked up so I'm looking to get a new one. I'm really impressed by the latest Sony Ericsson phones and am thinking about the Sony W810i. But, I've had a Motorola phone of one type or another for quite awhile now though so I'm kind of invested in their OS and menu system etc. The RIZR is a reall...

2007-04-14 15:27:00
Go to Engadget to vote for the Digital Camera of the Year in the 2006 Engadget Awards. The choices are:1) Canon 400D/Rebel XTi (ProductCritic Score=85)2) Canon SD800 (ProductCritic Score=81)3) Nikon D80 (ProductCritic Score=91)4) Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 (ProductCritic Score=79)5) Sony Alpha 100 (ProductCritic Score=83)6) Sony HDR-SR1 (ProductCritic Score=88)So far, the results look like the Rebel XTi has a very slight edge over the Nikon D80 (even though the reviews show that the D80 is a better camera). You have until midnight, Monday, April 16 to cast your vote so head on over and do that.

Setting Up A Startup - It's So Easy Now!
2007-04-13 09:14:00
I am constantly amazed at the high quality of many open source projects. I've worked on a number of them myself and can understand some of the reasons why people contribute free time to the projects but it still amazes me at the quality of some projects. This post gives you a general idea of all the tools we used to create our startup. When we built ProductCritic we took advantage of as much open source software as we could to reduce our upfront costs. As mentioned in an earlier post the site runs a virtual private server. It's running Ubuntu Server using Lighttpd as the frontend webserver and FastCGI to run the Rails applications. Eventually this will be upgraded to use Mongrel and possibly Apache but the current system is working fine in our environment and I see no reasons to change it at the present. We are using PostgreSQL as the database server for no other reason than I prefer it to MySQL. For the type of application that ProductCritic is, (Digital Camera Reviews) either d...

Beginner's Guide To Buying A Digital Camera
2007-04-11 20:36:00
We've previously talked about what to look for when buying a Digital SLR camera but what if you've just started looking for a regular digital camera? (Although, with over 30 million digital cameras sold in 2006, there's less and less people who are just jumping into the digital camera market for the first time). If you need a beginner's primer on buying a digital camera, Tech2.com has a pretty simple beginner's guide.I've bought a few digital cameras and the best advice I can give is to go to the store and try it out (even if you're going to buy it online). You want to see how it feels in your hand and you want to try the basic functions (startup, viewing pictures, movies, deleting, menu options). The way the buttons are placed on the camera may just not work with your hands and fingers. Finally, look on ProductCritic to see what the professional reviewers say about image quality and how the cameras you're interested in stack up to each other.

Canon Elph - Which One To Buy?
2007-04-09 19:15:00
Even if you're a Cano n fan, buying one of their ultracompact cameras in the Digital Elph line can be confusing and frustrating. There are so many of these models to choose from, each with their own set of features.CNET has recently posted an article about making a choice amongst the Canon Digital Elph cameras. They also have a side-by-side comparison of five of the models. I've listed them below with their CNET rating along with their ProductCritic Scores:Canon PowerShot SD1000 (CNET=7.8)Canon PowerShot SD900 (CNET=7.6 ProductCritic Score=82)Canon PowerShot SD800 IS (CNET=7.8 ProductCritic Score=81)Canon PowerShot SD750 (CNET=7.8 ProductCritic Score=80)Canon PowerShot SD600 (CNET=7.8 ProductCritic Score=83)CNET's conclusion is that if money is no object, buy the SD800 IS but if cost matters, get the SD600.All the reviews for the cameras are so close that you'll probably be happy purchasing any of them. I also have a Digital Elph (the PowerShot SD500 - ProductCritic Score=85) and...

Google Adsense Optimization Team
2007-04-04 15:15:00
Logging into ProductCritic's Adsense account today, I saw a new section called "Recent Messages" with a message from the "Optimization Team". Given that the date of the message was April 1, I almost thought that it was going to be some sort of April Fool's joke.Looks like Google automatically reviewed ProductCritic and here's the help they are providing:"You may be filtering ads that monetize well on your site".When I dig deeper, it says that I am filtering ads and that if I filter less ads, I could increase my revenue. That's all well and good but unlike Google, I hate Made-For-Ads sites. I don't want visitors to ProductCritic to click on them and basically waste their time. I really don't care that it could "increase my revenue" if I didn't filter them.If more and more sites actually filtered these Made-For-Ads sites, would they start to disappear? Probably not but we're going to do our part to make the Internet a little bit better.

The BEST And ONLY Digital SLR Buyer's Guide You Will Need
2007-04-02 17:51:00
Running a site like ProductCritic, I read a lot about digital cameras. It's hard not to get almost bored (or at least unaffected) with some of the articles out there and it becomes a rare occurance when I sit up and really take notice. Here's one of those times. I'm nearly speechless by how good this article is by Gear Digest (the same network of sites that is part of Tom's Hardware Guide ) providing a Buyer 's Guide to Digital SLR's which includes details and comparisons on 26 DSLR cameras. The article is so good because it gives you a really detailed explanation of many aspects of DSLRs like sensor types, lenses supported, and shutter speeds and how each aspect will apply to your final purchase decision. Finally, the article ends with a comprehensive features chart comparing all 26 DSLRs against each of the aspects that the article described previously. Great work! So, if you're in the market for a new DSLR or are a beginner looking to move up to your first Digital SLR, then do ...

Top 6 Resources To Learn Ruby On Rails
2007-03-31 02:26:00
In a previous post, we discussed why we are using Ruby On Rails to develop ProductCritic. We're not saying it's the best framework since sliced bread (nothing ever is) but it's fairly easy to learn if you're interested. With Rail's growing user base, the resources for learning the framework are certainly growing. The following resources are what I am currently considering the best locations of information.1) Free Original ScreencastsThree free movies that give a great overview and show what the framework can do. Watch them through at full speed to be entertained but then go through them and follow along with your own editor to rebuild the applications yourself.2) Agile Web Development with Rails, 2nd EditionWhen just starting out I found it useful to have the print book but it's also available in PDF as well. This book brings together all the components in building an application is really worth the money. It's been recently revised for 1.2 so it should have a reasonable sh...

Quit Boring People With Your Travel Slideshows
2007-03-28 20:36:00
I wouldn't say I've travelled extensively (like some of my friends) but I have been to quite a few "exotic" countries (India, Egypt, Turkey, all over east Africa) and have taken gigabytes and gigabytes of pictures (that's one of my pics in this blog post).I never seem to get around to putting all my pictures together into a nice slideshow that I can burn onto a DVD with nice music to show others though. Everyone has had the experience of going through other people's photos and being bored so it's hard not to feel a bit intimidated when putting a slideshow together of your own travel photos. After all, who wants to bore others?Brave New Travel ler has a good article about Creating Memorable Slideshows. The Incredible Story Of Cell Phones
2007-03-27 00:28:00
Do you remember when no one had cell phones? How did you tell your friends you'd be late? How'd you tell others where to come find you? How'd you figure out where everyone else was?Looking around nowadays, it's easy to forget that it wasn't very long ago when almost no one had a cell phone. Going through the cell phone reviews on ProductCritic, it amazes me how far the technology has come in such a relatively short time....especially when you see phones like the Blackberry Pearl or the Nokia 7390 with their huge list of features and functions. The Nokia 7390 has a pretty good 3 megapixel camera included. My first digital camera, the Canon G1 was 3.1 megapixel and it was one of the top-end "prosumer" cameras at that time!AmericanHeritage.com has a great article detailing the story of the creation of the first "hand-held portable phone" by Motorola. It's a pretty fascinating tale and, as with most good stories, it's about overcoming some incredibly massive challenges (due to a ...

Who Else Wants To Use PostgresSQL Instead Of MySQL?
2007-03-23 16:59:00
In a previous post I mentioned that we use Post greSQL as our database server. Common sense might indicate that we use MySQL as that is what the core team is using and what would probably be considered to be the defacto standard for Rails development. So why are we using PostgreSQL?Probably the biggest reason we use PostgresSQL is the simplest...I like it more than MySQL. This is one of the main reasons why we picked Rails as our development platform. When all things are equal, pick the one that is more enjoyable to use as you're going to be spending lots of time with it and it helps with motivation during those long hours of a startup. Both databases are perfectly capable and I've used both on live sites but I've always found MySQL to be harder to use from the command line. This may be because I don't know how to use all the features but that's is part of the problem isn't it? Learning PostgreSQL on the command line was very easy and intuitive, MySQL isn't.The other reason...

ProductCritic Is Definitely For The "Time Poor"
2007-03-19 08:54:00
Lightspeed Venture Partners has a blog posting up about the different types of Internet users. In creating Prod uct Crit ic, we didn't actually think in terms of this but given that I put myself in the "Time Poor " camp and the whole reason to create the site was to help others like me, it's not a wonder that "search engines" and "comparison shopping engines" are two examples that are directly linked to why we built ProductCritic. Our goal is not only to minimize the time that you spend researching products before you buy them, our goal is also to minimize the time you spend on ProductCritic! I know that doesn't sound like such a smart thing to wish for the visitors to your site when you're creating a startup. It actually sounds completely counter-intuitive.As I've stated in previous posts, the usefulness of ProductCritic is tied directly to how much time we can save people when they research products. That includes spending time on the site itself. Our belief is that if ProductCriti...
Now Is A Great Time To Buy A Digital SLR Camera
2007-03-15 14:06:00
I've owned a DSLR camera (a Canon 20D) for a couple years now. I bought it to go on a trip to India and don't regret the price or the cost of the extra lenses one bit. The pictures I'm able to take with the camera make me look like a better photographer without actually being a better photographer! The camera has been invaluable in capturing pictures of my first kid and again, some of the pictures turn out so fantastic, I'd be happy if a professional captured ones like them. Then again, that's what happens when you take hundreds of pictures in a session...you're bound to get at least one "show quality" photo! That's my strategy, shoot enough quantity so that you get lucky and get some quality. If you've been contemplating upgrading to a digital SLR, there is no better time than now! There are plenty of good options out right now at very reasonable prices. In addition to reviewing hardware and software, Macworld, for some reason, also reviews digital cameras (the only "consumer ...

CNET Editor's Top 7-Megapixel Cameras
2007-03-13 06:10:00
The latest batch of pocket point-and-shoot cameras boast 7-Megapixels of goodness. Of course, lots of megapixels really doesn't mean better pictures but CNET has listed their top 7-Megapixel cameras.I've listed them below along with each cameras ProductCritic Score (as long as they are listed in ProductCritic).Canon PowerShot SD800 IS (81)Sony CyberShot DSC-T10 (77)Sony CyberShot DSC-T50 (79)Canon PowerShot A710 IS (83)Sony CyberShot DSC-T30Canon PowerShot A550Nikon Coolpix S7cKodak EasyShare V705 (75)Sony CyberShot DSC-H5 (78)Canon Powershot SD550 (85)It's always interesting to me how CNET rates their products compared to the summary score that we calculate from all the professional reviews on the Internt. Note that the 10th spot on CNET's list is the best rated of them all according to the ProductCritic Score. I think the SD550 is a great camera so I'm not surprised it's actually got the best reviews from experts. I'm also not surprised that Kodak has the lowest score of th...

Testing Great Firewall of China
2007-03-12 06:22:00
John Chow just posted a blog entry about his very successful blog being blocked by the Great Firewall of China . Well, I decided to go and try it out to see if either this blog or ProductCritic (the main site) was also blocked. From the results, it looks like ProductCritic is available (yay!) but for some reason this blog is blocked. I've included both images from the test result.I'm not sure how much I can believe the results because Google Analytics shows that I've been getting hits from within China to this blog. Maybe the analytics data is wrong? Also notice that in the 'available' image, at the bottom, it actually says that the last test was 'blocked'. Something is definitely odd with this test. It's not that big of a deal to me as access to the main ProductCritic site from China is what is actually important to me.

Are You A Linux Geek? You'll Love These Phones
2007-03-07 14:04:00
The Ministry of Tech blog has a post listing The 5 Hottest Phone s for Linux Fanatics. All these "phones" are built on the Linux platform and in theory, should enable communities to be created around them to customize their functionality.Listed below are the phones (and their ProductCritic Score if available):FIC Neo1973Sony mylo (ProductCritic Score = 67)ROAD S101K HandyPCMotorola A1200 (ProductCritic Score = 83)Grundig B700The Motorola A1200 (also known as the "Ming") has pretty good reviews but the Sony mylo has quite mixed ones. This is probably because the mylo really isn't a phone in the traditional sense in that you can only make calls if you're connected via Wi-fi and use Skype...it doesn't have the traditional cell phone capabilities (and therefore the monthly fees or contracts).

Our Simple And Free Method For Submitting Sitemaps
2007-03-06 07:20:00
Creating sitemaps for your site is a very important part of ensuring that the search engines can spider your site easily and know the most about its pages. You can view ProductCritic's sitemap at http://www.productcritic.com/sitemap.xmlA t ProductCritic, we mostly care about Google and Yahoo! since these two sites combine for more than 80% of the search traffic to the site. If you have not done so already, you should set up your sites at both Google Webmaster Tools and Yahoo! Site Explorer:http://www.google.com/webmasters /toolshttp://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.co mOnce you've set up your sites and verified that you own them (I've found that the easiest way to do this is to upload their generated html file to your site vs using a meta-tag), it's time to create and upload a sitemap. When we first launched the main site, we tried some free sitemap generators (just do a search at Google and you'll find a ton of them). The free online one that we found was the best was XML-Sitemap s.com....

How To Save A Wet Cell Phone
2007-03-02 21:56:07
Just a quick post today...hopefully a useful one. I think there's two camps of cell phone users, those that take real good care of their phone and those like me who drop their cell phone a lot. As I type, my phone currently has a huge crack across its front and its been there for quite awhile now. I should replace it but nothing else is wrong with the phone! The LCD works just fine (both exterior and interior) so I just keep using it.OK, maybe I'm also lazy and cheap.Anyways, in my regular dropping of my cell phones, occasionally it happens in the middle of the street on a rainy day. Lucky for me, so far, it hasn't fallen directly into a puddle. If it does, the warranty is void and the phone company knows what you did. But, if you're not so lucky and it happens to you (or your kid throws it into the toilet), have a look at this article on wikiHow that provides as much help and instruction as possible on how to save it (if it can be saved).

I Have A Lot More To Learn About Adsblacklist
2007-03-02 09:56:03
So I've been using AdsBlack List for a little while now. Actually, more to the point, I've been putting MFA (Made For Ads) sites on my Google Adsense Competitive Ad Filter list and just using AdsBlackList to keep track of all the MFA sites I see on ProductCritic.I've read a few blog posts and related comments about it not working or reducing overall revenue. I'm not sure I've seen a reduction in revenue yet (still too early to tell) but I might try an experiment in the second week of March to see what happens when I remove the sites on the Ad Filter list.Still, I'm debating with myself because my main purpose for putting those sites on the list is not just for increasing revenue (since some posts say that Google already puts in the highest paying ads automatically since that's the best for Google...which makes sense). My main purpose for putting the sites on my filter list is that I hate MFA sites and everything they stand for and I think that I'm doing a disservice to people...

The Worst Digital Cameras Ever
2007-02-28 21:55:02
I just stumbled across an article by Digital Camera HQ talking about the worst cameras ever. Although written in October 2006, some of the cameras are still on the market so watch out! In no particular order, the writer calls out these cameras:Canon Powershot A70Sea Life DC500Kodak Easyshare OnePolaroid PDC-5080Pentax Optio E10While I was surprised by the Canon A70 (as I've always been happy with my Canon's), further details revealed a major glitch in the camera and Canon had to offer free repairs for it. It's the one camera that has driven many people away from Canon's ever since.I'm certainly not surprised by the inclusion of the Pentax Optio E10 though. Of all the cameras on ProductCritic, it has the lowest ProductCritic Score of 63. Not surprisingly, the second lowest score on the whole site goes to its cousin, the Pentax Optio A10 which received a 69. That definitely tells me that Pentax doesn't know how to make a good point & shoot...although I believe that their dSLR's...

Build A Website Using Ruby On Rails That You Can Be Proud Of
2007-02-27 21:54:26
ProductCritic is developed with the Ruby on Rails framework. This entry will give some insight on how this came to be.My experience with web apps started with ASP and later onto ASP.NET. I found ASP.NET a huge improvement over ASP but after working on a few sites I still found it lacking.Specifically one thing ASP.NET does not have good support for is nice URLs. I'm sure there are ways to do it but I never found a good solution to removing those ugly .aspx page extensions. Also, the page/form centric model that ASP.NET uses is a bad design for medium to large sites I find. No matter how hard I try I've always found my ASP.NET based sites always becoming a bit of a mess if they take off in size. There were many other problems and things I just didn't like about ASP.NET so about a year and a half ago I began looking for an alternative.I got interested in working with Ruby on Rails after seeing the original screencast. I'll never forget thinking "who is that crazy danish guy...

Second Worst Invention Ever? Cell Phones
2007-02-24 09:52:01
IT Week has a summary of a survey done in the UK asking what is the worst invention ever. Believe it or not, Cell Phone s came in second just after Weapons! Here's the full list:Weapons (35%)Mobile Phones (17%)Nuclear Power (9%)Sinclair C5 (9%)Television (9%)The Car (6%)Cigarettes (6%)Fast Food (3%)Speed Cameras (3%)Religion (2%)I have no idea what the Sinclair C5 is but obviously it's some British thing that's really bad! I also don't know the audience they were asking for this survey but I'm obviously different than that target group as I love my TV and my car.I actually don't think Cell Phone s are bad at all (which is why they are one of the products reviewed on ProductCritic)....what is actually bad are some Cell Phone users!
Not Sure What Type Of Camera To Buy?
2007-02-22 21:50:01
I read a lot of forum posts on Yahoo and CNET and a lot of the questions are very general in nature and are usually of the type "What is the best camera?" or "What camera should I buy?"This is a very difficult question to answer because, like cars, the type of camera you buy depends highly on what you will use it for, how much you want to spend, etc.About.com has a very simple Digital Camera Selector Quiz that may help you by at least pointing you in the right direction about which cameras you should do some research on (of course, you should then do that research on ProductCritic). I tried the quiz acting as different types of buyers and I think it retured fairly decent advice...although it said I should get an advanced camera instead of the dSLR that I thought it would recommend given my answers to the quiz.If you are looking to buy your first digital camera and are a little intimidated by all the choices, do yourself a favor and take the short quiz.
