Trends to make you buggy....
2008-06-07 17:30:00
Today?s swarm of insect inspired jewelery will range in price from the brooches at Miu Miu to the high-flying jeweled creations of Sharon Khazzam, Sevan and Vernissage. In case you were thinking that they would be running out of designs bear in mind that there are about 10 quintillion insects in the world ? bees, grasshoppers, praying mantises and walking sticks are just the tip of the termite mound. So if art should care to go on imitating nature, it will have some ways to go before the well of inspiration runs dry.

Selling precious jewelery
2008-04-04 06:48:00
Beware! For those that are currently selling off their gold, platinum and silver. One would think that the latest increase in traffic into local jewelry stores was to start shopping for a Mother's Day present, however, what we're seeing in the industry are mom's selling off their jewelry to cash in on the high precious metal prices. In fact, there are some smart entrepreneurs out there setting up what can only be called "Gold Buying Expo's" wherein they buy jewelry "on the spot" at the local Holiday Inn.What's the harm?

Diamonds are forever...
2008-04-01 05:19:00
Diamonds are the birthstone for those born in the month of April. They represent fearlessness and invincibility. Diamonds are prized for their brilliance, elegance, and purity, and have captivated our imaginations for thousands of years. The diamond actually derives its name from the Greek word adamas, meaning unconquerable and indestructible. The ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars that had fallen to the earth. Some said that they were tears of the gods. Kings of old wore diamonds in their armor to protect them in battle.Just remember to stay away from the conflict variety...

Sector Snap: Jewelry Retailers Decline
2008-03-31 03:52:00
From Yahoo Biz.Jewelry retailers fell on Friday, after an analyst downgraded two companies amid a difficult economic environment.Consumers are cutting back on big-ticket items such as jewelry as they face rising food and gas costs and weak credit and housing markets. In addition, precious metal prices have increased sharply in recent months.Merrill Lynch analyst Lorraine Maikis cut her ratings for Tiffany & Co. and Blue Nile to "Sell" from "Neutral."It was the second downgrade in a week for Tiffany, which on Monday reported strong fourth-quarter results and raised 2008 earnings guidance. On Tuesday, however, Oppenheimer analyst Roxanne Meyer said the increase in guidance was largely due to an accounting change and downgraded the company to "Perform" from "Outperform.""We think quarter-to-date U.S. comp trends could easily turn south, and are concerned that a second-half rebound in the U.S. luxury market will be tough in light of turmoil in financial markets and workforce reductio...

Guess what: Thin is in. That?s news? For watches it is! The ladylike aesthetics for fashion right now demand daintier proportions in wrist-wear. The look modernizes when coupled with a (respectively) large face. High time, I say, after the protracted period of watch bands going wide. 2008-03-30 00:33:00
From the National Jeweler. The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index, which had already dropped sharply in February, fell further to 64.5 in March , indicating that consumer's gloomy feelings about the economy, including the job market, remain at a five-year low. The Consumer Confidence Index had already slipped to 76.4 in February, far from the level of 100 it had reached back in 1985. The board's Expectations Index declined to 47.9 in March from 58 in February, and its Present Situation Index decreased to 89.2 in March from 104 in February. "Consumers' confidence in the state of the economy continues to fade, and the index remains at a five-year low [it was at 61.4 in March 2003]," The Conference Board Consumer Research Center Director Lynn Franco said in a press release issued on Tuesday. "The decline in the Present Situation Index implies that the pace of growth in recent months has weakened even further." What's more, consumers' views on future business ...

Retailers snap up spring trends
2008-03-12 03:26:00
Despite the sluggish US economy and the soaring price of precious metals, retailers are stocking up on the latest spring jewelry trends at the JA New York Winter Show, being held at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City. The JA New York Winter Show, running from March 9-11, features international booths, the New Product Gallery, the Couture Pavilion dedicated to high-end jewelry and educational seminars from Jewelers of America. This has proved to be an invaluable resource as salespeople must perpetually increase their knowledge, which means training must not be an event but an ongoing process.

Leap Year 2008
2008-02-29 06:00:00
Like many other Leap Year babies, or "leaplings," as they're sometimes known, today is a day for celebration! Some hold off on birthday celebrations during non-leap years, then throw a huge quadrennial blowout.February 29th is also a very special occasion because it's a day that women have traditionally proposed to men. For reference purpose there are a few tales of origin for this tradition;IrishIt is believed this tradition was started in 5th century Ireland when St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about women having to wait for so long for a man to propose. According to legend, St. Patrick said the yearning females could propose on this one day in February during the leap year. Scottish The first documentation of this practice dates back to 1288, when Scotland passed a law that allowed women to propose marriage to the man of their choice in that year. They also made it law that any man who declined a proposal in a leap year must pay a fine. The fine could range from a kiss ...

The US is the Single-Largest Importer of China-Made Costume Jewelry
2008-02-29 01:37:00
China continues to be the world's dominant producer of costume jewelry, accounting for approximately half of global supply. The 5,000-plus supplier base exports more than US$1 billion worth of necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets, anklets and brooches annually. Exports have been increasing in the past few years, and strong growth is still the trend. The US is the single-largest importer of China-made costume jewelry, absorbing 39 percent of the country's exports. Combined imports from EU member countries accounted for 19 percent of China's shipments. Low-end models represent approximately 55 percent of outbound volume, midrange models 30 percent and high-end designs the rest. The following are some of the key trends we see in China's costume jewelry industry: Rising material and labor costs will force suppliers to raise prices in 2008, although keen competition will cap increases to 10 percent. The majority of makers will continue to increase their production capacity to me...

Pantone fashion color report fall 2008
2008-02-27 00:58:00
A Season of Change Best described as a season of change, fall ?08 is defined by rich, elegant hues that offer a vibrant selection. New York's fashion designers emphasize cooler blues, greens and purples in the top five tones used in their collections, followed by variations of warm red, orange and yellow. "Fall is traditionally a time for subdued, quiet colors, but this season we are seeing a shift toward cool hues with bright, exciting undertones," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. "Conventional tones such as warm autumn hues, chocolate browns and steel grays are also among the fall color choices. Blue and purple tones have become staples, as illustrated by Blue Iris, one of the top 10 colors chosen by designers this season, and Pantone?s Color of the Year for 2008 ."

Spring Accessories 2008
2008-02-18 04:25:00
Over the past two weeks I've been in Hong Kong and have had the pleasure of being able to escape the blahs of 30 centimeters of snow, +15 centimeters of snow and finally another 15 centimeters ... On my first full day back in Toronto I've been treated to the sweet slippery enjoyment of freezing rain and over 22mm in rain. Needless to say I'm already missing the spring like weather from my two week escape. In any case some might suggest that when times are bleak and bleary that its best to take a cue from Mary Poppins and eat some sugar, or go fly a kite. Then of course I don't think anyone will be flying kites unless they have a pair of skates on. Fortunately, many of this spring?s accessories ? bright, playful and plastic ? offer a droll antidote for these worrisome days. Remember that even when clothing trends veer toward conservatism, accessories can break the mold. Playful, unconventional accessories remains an expression of personal style, even paired with a basic w...

Smart Shopper: Know your trends...
2008-02-17 20:56:00
Hip Hop JeweleryFans across the US, Canada, the UK and even Asia are purchasing this fascinating type of jewelry as the products are unique and distinguishable due to their size and styles. Hip hop chains are usually very large, so large that most mainstream jewelers do not carry those styles. Another common trend is that they are covered with gemstones of all types ranging from diamonds to rubies and sapphires. Because of these characteristics, authentic pieces can sell for prices upwards of $50,000 for one item.To fill the demand for these products at reasonable costs, fashion jewelry manufacturers have been creating high quality replicas at amazing prices and great quality. The highest quality iced out chains are made of solid brass and only the highest quality CZ stones are used. Watches are made with quality Japanese movements, genuine crocodile pattern leather straps and top grade steel. With the emergence of these products, the popularity of hip hop jewelry surged.Everyone ha...

2008 Valentine's Day Survey - Redux
2008-02-01 06:51:00
Valentine's Day, the most romantic day of the year, is full of expectations ... and disappointments. According to the 2008 Jewelry.com Valentine's Day Survey , Cupid needs a helping hand. Jewelry.com asked a few hundred women what they wanted to get this Valentine's Day and what they actually expected to receive and once again, the findings prove that Mars and Venus speak very different languages. On the other hand financial worries are a universal lingo. Money isn't everything ... It's the thought that counts this year with over 50% of woman surveyed noting that this February 14th, all they wanted was a romantic surprise or a simple card/flowers/ chocolate. -- Unfortunately almost half (47.4%) also noted that what they expected was 'disappointment' or 'something he picks up last minute' -- When it comes to 'how much to spend' -- 38.4% stated their partner usually spends no more than $99, with 30% responding he spends a big fat $0. -- ...
