When we finally got some wheels, which wasn't much more than a scooter, we were off to that new world where kids hung out year 'round, the mall. You could do everything there. Outside of actually buying anything, there were some cool stores. We had to go dream about a new stereo, then maybe an air hockey table. Or how about a foosball table! Yeah that's what we surely needed!Then for some fun, we always ended up at the arcade. We weren't going to win any stuffed animals, but we sure could unload some coins. Had to make sure we saved enough to gas up the scooter and head home. Yup, that's the way it was.

It never really matters what age you are when it comes to having a favorite toy. We all can think of what toy we really enjoy right now, today. From the pedal car when we were 3, to the home video arcade when we were, uh, well let's just say, when we matured, a little. Playing board games, like backgammon , or chess was great because you could play them anywhere.  Outside, at the beach, remember? Then your mom would yell out to you from her kitchen cave, and say, "let the girls play too". So now, to not get into trouble, you thought of a game to play that you knew the girls would lose at, and they would leave. So you would suggest, "how about some air hockey girls?" One childhood memory that really takes me back, is that magical musical box that sat on mom's dresser. The sound was like something from a fairy tale, but for a few moments if all was quiet, you were transported into that little ideal world. The music box has a great history. Sometimes when you were a kid, and it was raining outside, after you finished playing a board game in the game room, sitting down to put a model together would be just the thing. You knew it would take you a few days or weeks even, but it was one of the first projects in your life that you had to finish. Building model cars was the most fun, but if you wanted a real challenge, a model ship was the ultimate! Roll up your sleeves and dive in! Finding a spot to display it was the next project. It had to have a place of distinction. Maybe you could take it to school for show and tell before it was finally put in its new home. Yup, thats the way it was.

One of the games we enjoyed playing a lot was backgammon. We still play it quite a bit. The game has an interesting history. It began appearing in the Mesopotamian culture of Ur around 3,000 B.C. and archaeological digs continue to turn up board games very similar to todays fast paced and challenging game of backgammon. Backgammon in its early form is the oldest known board game in history surpassing even the game of Chess. The travels of this gaming idea show up in both ancient India culture as well as Egyptian culture where a variation on the game called Senat was popular among both Egyptian aristocracy and the slave population. By the time backgammon reached early Greece, the Greeks decided to lay claim to inventing the game but it was only an adoption of their culture from earlier civilizations. In the Roman version, three dice were employed for the moves and the game was referred to as "Bac amen" or "back game". We have always enjoyed a fast paced game of backgammon

OK, you listened to some music  and had a few dances with your girlfriend, now it's time to get her home. So you hop on your scooter  and off you go. Those were some pretty fun times. You decide to impress her, so you take her to the fair, walk along the midway to find a game you're good at so you can win her that big stuffed animal she said she wanted.  No problem. You knock a few bottles off a stool and she picks out the big stuffed panda.  You go ahead and try a few more throws and win again! This time she picks out that really nice music box.  Maybe now she just might return the favor and tuck away for Christmas that cool phonograph you've had your eye on!

Pedal cars were the best way to get around when you were 3.  Where did we need to go?  Why were we in a big hurry?  Just because, now get out of my way!  Toys were the most amazing things in the world.  Made just for us.  Only one purpose, to have fun and laugh and smile 'till your face hurt. This blog is about the way toys made us feel, and to bring some of those feelings back to life, with of all things, more toys!
