Trentacosta to the Rescue!
2008-03-07 01:45:00 Why is it that once clothing gets into double-digit sizes it loses all style?Walk into any major department store and you'll see proof - the Misses section is full of modern silhouettes, fun colors, details taken off the runways. Once you cross the aisle to the Womens section you find dowdy shirt jackets, cheap embellishments, corny patterns and styles.Darren Trentacosta wondered, where are the plus size versions of the items one sees in the monthly glossy magazines, on celebrities and models or, even more importantly, being worn by the plus size consumers? thinner girlfriends? Where does the plus size consumer find these fashions? In response to that question, Darren created Trentacosta New York, a line of tailored and stylish clothing in sizes 10 through 24. Darren had been a fashion photographer for years and was always encouraging his clients to add plus-sized models to shoots. he even helped create CurveStyle, the first runway show at Bryant Park for plus-size fashion. What I lo... The Power of Accessories
2008-03-05 22:46:00 I often blog about accessories, but I haven?t really delved into them and how they can really create your personal style. Last night on the subway I saw the best example of how accessories can tell a story better than most garments in your wardrobe. Two women on the train, both in black tailored shirts tucked in to classic black trousers. Both were wearing tan trenches, both were standing up, engrossed in their reading material. One woman had her hair in loose waves, was wearing this necklace and the matching earrings from Ann Taylor, a slim black glossy leather belt and pumps of the same glossy black leather that had silver buckles on the front. She had a black tumbled leather large satchel in her hand. The second woman had a silk scarf in bronze, camel, ivory and gold tied at her throat and tucked into the neckline. She had a thin gold chain through her belt loops and was wearing black boots with a square toe and slim heel. She had a camel leather structured purse over her shoul... Speak Up!
2008-03-05 11:56:00 I wrote about contacting retailers regarding poor selection for plus sizes before, well my sister recently did just such and received a response! She and I were doing our favorite lunchtime activity - internet window shopping from our respective work desks and emailing one another potential buys. She noticed a very cute Macintosh-style of rain coat at Lands End that she liked. As with many retailers, the item came in fewer (and less boring) colors for extended sizes. She decided to write them a letter. Lands End has really done a good job over the years of offering extended sizes for a large portion of their collection, and maybe a letter would open their eyes to the fact that they do not always offer the most colorful or trendy pieces in enough sizes.Dear Lands End,I love that you offer so many styles in plus sizes, especially coats. However, I am dismayed that the brighter colors usually only come in regular and petite sizes. For example, your microfiber rain coat. Just becau... More About: Speak

Too Much of a Good Thing
2008-03-01 13:37:00 I am getting lots of emails and comments from women excited about the spring trends. They are wondering how to fit all of them into their current wardrobe and want to know my opinion.I agree, there are some really wonderful trends this year that can add a lot of style and personality to a simple wardrobe, that are flattering and wearable. But do know, you do NOT have to follow any trends if you do not want to! A stylish woman is not a slave to trends; she only accepts those that she honestly enjoys. That being said, if there is a trend that does fit your personality, your lifestyle and your wardrobe? too much of it can be a bad thing.Yesterday on my way home I popped into Filene?s Basement. My eyes hurt from the carnival of colors in the bag section; bags women were grabbing up as though they were free. There were patent clutches, patent slouch bags, patent frame bags in bright orange, lipstick red, canary yellow, apple green. These bags had the hip patent, the current shape that... How to Save Face
2008-02-29 18:40:00 We all can?t afford a tub of La Mer, but we can all do very simple free (or almost free) steps to better our skin. There is no point in putting paint on a dirty canvas; the first step in looking beautiful, stylish and polished is to have beautiful and happy skin. Here are some simple tips that every woman can do to achieve that. Happy Leap Day to all!1. Drink Water. I know, I know we all hear this but it really really REALLY makes a huge difference. I try to drink 60 ounces of plain water a day and when I do it, my skin is so happy and fresh looking. My husband bought me a Nalgene in my favorite color and I have it on my desk. Each morning I fill it up and I compete with myself to have it finished before lunch. I then go and refill it and try to finish it before I leave at the end of the day. Weekends I give myself a break, but because I force the water during the week, I crave it on weekends and catch myself drinking almost as much on Saturdays and Sundays.Add flavor if y... Product Review ? Jumeau
2008-02-25 18:01:00 I was recently asked to review a new line of bags called Jumeau that is being sold at bagsbuy.com. Jumeau is described by the company as, ?Jumeau [is] young and hip with a fun modish feel to it.? They have four lines of bags under Jumeau:Institution Collection: Fusion between form and function. Product Review - Embrace
2008-02-25 15:13:00 Do you ever see products and think, "why didn't I think of that?" Well that is exactly what I thought when I was contacted by Embrace to try out their products - The Bra Strap Solution and A Fresh Pair.I think one of the tackiest things is to have exposed bra straps - I don't care what celeb or designer is sporting the look, it isn't chic and it isn't stylish. Unfortunately not all fashions work with a traditional bra, and I have found that racer-back and convertible bras are not always as supportive. I have tried many tools on the market to pull my bra straps closer together to work with racer back and cut-out styles of tops and have always been disappointed with the results. I expected Embrace's The Bra Strap Solution to be another disappointment. The Bra Strap Solution arrives in a very clever package that looks like a matchbook. The tool itself is of clear rigid plastic and reminded me of the little plastic inserts I used to put in 45 RPM records so they would work on t... More About: Product Review , Review , Product

Product Review - Turbo Ion's Croc Flat Iron Wet to Dry 1" Flat Iron
2008-02-23 13:52:00 I must admit, up until a year or two ago I didn?t think much about my hair. I got a haircut maybe every six months professionally, I often hacked at split ends with cuticle scissors and was known to randomly chop my hair myself or dye it at 4am when I was feeling bored/frustrated/antsy (wish I could find a picture of my home-made asymmetrical haircut of 2002? let?s just say I used Kelly Osbourne for inspiration). With this lack of care for my hair style, I was equally lackadaisical with purchasing styling tools. Hair dryer died? Well I?ll purchase the one on clearance at Target. Want my hair straight? I?ll just go all 60s and use my iron on the Wool setting!I started to realize that bad hair with good clothing was a bad mix; the raggedy layers and limp locks didn?t fit my polished wardrobe and I sought out a stylist who understood my hair and personality. She taught me that good products will keep my hair healthy and my color bright.I have been slowly replacing the drugstore br... More About: Product Review , Review , Product , Turbo , Iron

A New Look on Fashion
2008-02-22 18:52:00 I think women often look at fashion and clothing in the wrong manner, and that is why there is so much bad style, cheap style and weird combinations out there on women. We should look at style the way one would look at art, gardening or cooking. Before finding celebrity experts in the field who have a style we like, we should know the basics. Before we do a complete fashion overhaul, we should break down the style process. If you like cooking, you first learn how to work with what you have. That saucepan your mom gave you for your first apartment, the whisk you picked up at the grocery store, the foodstuff you could afford on your budget. As you cook, you acquire better tools based on what you enjoy/are good at cooking. Maybe it?s baking; possibly it?s grilling or Asian stir-fry. You read up on recipes and proper tools. You seek out markets and shops that carry hard-to-find ingredients. You have recipes or cookware that are your go-tos: ones you love and love you back because ... More About: Fashion

Random Acts of Kindness Day
2008-02-16 19:19:00 February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day. Use this holiday as a way to care for your fellow woman. For one day, don’t visit TMZ, Perez or Defamer to find out about Britney. For one day, stop to compliment a stranger on the street for her pretty shoes or nice hair. Hold the door at the store, let a woman senior to you on the train or in the church doors before you. Help a mother riddled with bags and children get her groceries to her car. Call your mother and tell her how much you love her. Before you start to criticize a fellow woman’s actions, looks or lifestyle today, take a moment to imagine yourself in her shoes. Instead of a sneer, for one day offer compassion and a genuine smile. You never know, she may need that smile more than you can image. Practice Random Acts of Kindness today, and find yourself becoming more beautiful from it! And after your day of kindness, I would love you to come here and comment on how it affected you!I hope you all have a wonderful...

Black Doesn’t Make You Look Slimmer, it Only Makes You Look Boring
2008-02-16 15:51:00 Yesterday on the Metro, a gorgeous woman in a pumpkin-colored toggle coat, brown trousers pinstriped with pink and brown booties. Gorgeous skin with a glow from pink blush and pink-tinted gloss. Pretty braids with little streaks of dark copper with the brown. I would guess the woman was a size 26. She could stop traffic with her inner glow and sassy look.In black? She would be another fat woman on the train. Not even that, she wouldn’t be remembered. She would blend in.The other day in the grocery store, woman who looked as though she just got out of yoga class or the gym. Dark plum yoga pants, gray sneakers with lime green accents, dark red glasses, olive green quilted thigh-length coat, nubby loopy scarf and matching hat knit in shades of olive, pink, purple and navy. Nothing too out of the ordinary, but it made me stop and think about my own black yoga pants (all three pairs) and that I own the very same coat but in black.
