Wardrobe Hints for Warm Climates
2008-02-13 22:58:00
I?ll admit it, I am NOT a know-it-all. I have only lived in my part of the US, I am not a mother, I am not a gardener, I am not a tall woman so I do not know off-hand the right thing for every woman out there. I often get emails and comments that my suggestions are not appropriate for all women?s lifestyles. Some I disagree with (if you attend weddings and Bar Mitzvas and special events in your life you should own a simple dress) and some I agree with. Recently I was contacted by a member of Pattern Review ? an awesome message board of sewers (hello ladies!!!) who suggested some options for those women who live in climates where it is always warm. She being from Texas knows a thing or two about a warm-climate wardrobe! I was happy to hear from an expert on that subject and would like to share her tidbits with you all!I love clothes, and am forever reading lists suggesting ways to put together a simple wardrobe that can form the basis of your entire closet. But, those lists ar...

Product Review - Afterglow Cosmetics
2008-02-06 19:46:00
In the past year my skin has become quite sensitive. Hives, irritation and redness occur if I look at my reflection the wrong way so I have been on the lookout for beauty products that are free of known irritants while still making me... well beautiful!Recently I was contacted by Afterglow Mineral Cosmetics and was very interested in trying their line. I have tried mineral makeup in the past with mixed results - some looked muddy on my skin, some made my face itch, and many seemed to get a weird ghostly glow in flash photography. Afterglow Mineral Cosmetics claims their line is free of synthetic dyes, preservatives and fillers; made with certified organic botanicals and even contains supposedly age-defying antioxidants such as grapeseed and pomegranate extract.Afterglow Cosmetics was created by Kristin Adams out of need; she too has sensitive skin and found most lines irritated and caused her to break out. Hardware Handbags Winter Clearance!
2008-02-06 12:02:00
Wanted to grab one of the HARDWARE Handbags when I reviewed them, but the price was outside your means? Well the company is having a Winter Clearance to make room for their new styles and currently the classic Shorty and Shopper are 50% off! Head to their site before they run out.As you know I reviewed this brand and even originallywrote about them sight-unseen because I was impressed; well months later I am still using my Shopper as my carry-on for flights, the bag to tote random stuff to work, and then to use to pick up groceries after work. The inside pockets keep everything organized and the snaps really seal up the top nicely to keep away pickpockets or losing an item. My bag seems to repel stains and looks as great (nice and structured and fresh) as it did when it arrived on my doorstep.Happy shopping!

Updating Your Wardrobe for Spring 2008
2008-02-05 19:29:00
I love the 80s; some of the most fun in music and even in fashion. I am one who does not flush with embarrassment when I see a picture of me decked out in mall bangs, puffy socks and shoulder pads. I thought at the time, the look was fun and colorful; fashion took risks. You could wear Versace, or you could wear vintage (though back then it was usually just a Joe Shmoe thrift store find) and still look totally tubular. That doesn?t mean I like the resurgence of metallics, shoulder pads, boyfriend blazers, leggings and skinny jeans in weird washes. It was fun? 20 years ago. Not it makes the most chic of women look like a fashion victim. So how can you get the new look for spring without looking like a leftover valley girl or a fashion victim? Here are some of the trends for spring that can work with most any wardrobe and survive more than one season of style:Watercolor BrightsThese aren?t quite the Crayola hues of the winter; they are a cherry spring version. Instead of orange...

Wardrobe Staples for the Mom-to-Be
2008-02-05 16:19:00
Many of you over the years have asked me about a maternity wardrobe. As that I have yet to be pregnant or a mother, I really didn't feel qualified to properly answer this question. Luckily fellow reader Leta Boylan has taken on the task. Thank you so much Leta!"Dear Allie:Using your original list, and a few other "just maternity" lists that I found, I have synthesized a list of what pregnant women need to buy, clothes wise. I know that you have no kids, but trust me, as someone who has one and is planning on another, maternity clothes are important and difficult."For maternity clothes, you will need a smock, a caftan, a muumuu, a half-apron, and some white Keds… okay, bad joke. Just kidding. Maternity clothes are only worn for a narrow window of time, so it helps to need to decide if you plan on having multiple pregnancies or not. Clearly, if you intend on having eight or nine kids, it makes sense to buy pricier, better made clothes. Accept the fact that unless you have unl...

The sexiest thing you can own – Yourself
2008-02-01 21:19:00
It’s hard when the various blog awards come out – I don’t know whether to participate because there never seems to be an appropriate category. I am not a beauty blog – yes I’ll write about it but I am not one to go gaga over the new MAC line or Marc Jacobs perfume. As for fashion… well I think I may be the only blogger left on the East Coast who is NOT at New York Fashion Week today. When it comes to shopping… well I do suggest items and ways to update a wardrobe with purchasing new pieces, but I personally don’t enjoy shopping too much, and I don’t believe in living outside your means. I don’t believe in purchasing something purely for the name it is associated with, that some magazine tells me it is the “must have” of the season, or to impress others. I really do think that with purchasing less, but higher quality items you can have an amazing wardrobe and be stylishly set for whatever live throws at you… no matter your income. As many of you fellow A...

Product Review - Jonathan Product Beauty Water Shower Purification System
2008-01-25 23:11:00
How much would you spend for something that would give you better hair? Less frizz, more time between shampoos, extended life on your highlights and dye jobs and lots of shine to boot? What if this item also gave you softer skin?As I mentioned in an earlier post, I treated myself this birthday month to a beauty product. After a while of eyeing it at Sephora and remembering episodes of Blow Out, I finally succumbed and bought the Jonathan Product Beauty Water Shower Purification System .Why did I hold off for so long? Well the $95 price tag scared me a bit. Come on, it’s just a freaking water filter; maybe I could figure out a way to jimmy-rig my Brita pitcher in my shower. And could a filter really make THAT much of a difference? Then I thought about my bi-monthly visits to the salon where I get a cut and color touchup. I think about the hives I have been plagued with the past several months. I then think about how fabulous my hair is when I visit other states such as Maine....

Wear Red on February 1st - Heart Disease Doesn't Care What You Wear
2008-01-24 16:28:00
One of my favorite colors and a great campaign to support; National Wear Red Day. Join me next Friday in wearing red and spreading awareness about women's heart disease.Friday, February 1, 2008, is National Wear Red Day—a day when Americans nationwide will take women's health to heart by wearing red to show their support for women's heart disease awareness. Although significant progress has been made in increasing awareness among women from 34 percent in 2000 to 57 percent in 2006—most women fail to make the connection between risk factors and their personal risk of developing heart disease.National Wear Red Day is an annual event held on the first Friday in February. On this day, women and men across the country will wear red to unite in the national movement to give women a personal and urgent wake-up call about their risk of heart disease. Everyone can participate by showing off a favorite red dress, shirt, or tie, or by wearing the Red Dress Pin (available at www.heart...

Wednesday Rant - Happy Birthday to YOU!
2008-01-24 00:46:00
I turned 30 a couple of years ago, and that date was not as much frightening as it was eye-opening. I was never one of those women who made a list of what she hoped to accomplish by a certain date, I have worked hard and let life take me where it wants to when it wants to.However when I turned 30, I realized I was an actual GROWN UP. No longer could I party until 3am and still survive work the next day. No longer could I live off vodka tonics and Slim Fast bars and have energy and a decent waistline. The concept of disposable clothing from low-price retailers seemed to be stupid when I was shopping for furniture, cars, electronics. And my skin… oh my skin was looking 30. 15 years of makeup, a decade of passing out before taking off my makeup and drinking more soda than water had taken its toll. My skin was suffering, and I felt guilty. For at 30, I realized that you can be fired from a job, your house can be burned down, your spouse can leave you but you will always have your ...

Dress Your Age, Not Your Shoe Size
2008-01-23 15:21:00
I hate too many rules with fashion – it takes the fun out of it. I don’t think a certain age requires one to have a certain length of hair or skirt, and heck I think diamonds are too pretty to only wear in evening and when older. However, I think some fashion guidelines are created to help us from looking like fools.Last week I was crossing the street in Washington D.C. and in front of me was a woman in a full-length mink coat and a shoulder-length sandy-colored bob. She was wearing black pants, black heels, had a very large black handbag and was walking with purpose. From the back, I assumed she was a successful and powerful woman in her late 40s to early 50s. At the intersection she went left when I went right and I was able to see the front of her and was utterly shocked to see this woman was in fact younger than I – probably early to mid 20s with a fresh face and a baby pink cashmere turtleneck. This weekend I visited Miami, the land of flamboyant dress. I saw so many...

Oh goodness, HUNDREDS of you applied for the Sephora Smokey Eye Kit contest! Unfortunately I only had one kit to give out, and Trina from Canada was the winner! Congrats Trina, do come back and let us know what you think of the kit! This week's prize is quite a luxurious treat for the winner - Darphin Paris HydroFORM Toning Oil. I have used products from the Darphin Paris line and have been highly impressed with the quality, the fragrance and the results. I currently use an oil by them for my face every night and seen a drastic change in the appearance of fine lines and the elasticity and softness of the skin. Spend Money to Save Money?
2008-01-15 18:07:00
“Sometimes you need to spend money to make money.”We have heard this when it comes to renovating our homes for a sell, or starting a business. Well this rule holds true for fashion. Sometimes you need to spend money to make (or save) money.Quality clothing is usually more durable and classically-styled than its cheaper counterparts, resulting in less money on the wardrobe and more for the wallet. However, there is another way that spending money can support your bank account in the long run.Your New Best Friend – The TailorHeels were hip, but now flats are where it’s at. You finally got rid of that baby weight and back into a size eight. You’re 5’1” in a 5’6” world. There are many reasons why the clothing you either own or hope to own isn’t quite right and could use a bit of sewing modification. A good tailor can help you out to take your current wardrobe and make it fit the current trends AND your current figure. Instead of settling for garments that “...

Catie at the wildly entertaining and well-written Cuffington has tagged me for one of these blogger memes. I love reading these on other blogs for it gives some insight into the author and owner and I love Cuffington, so I'll participate!1. What is the Story Behind the Name of Your Blog? This blog started as a personal place to store some ideas I had about fashion and style. I started it knowing diddly about blogging, so the name was What Every Woman Needs in Her Wardrobe. Short and catchy, huh?Well I started thinking about branding and a way to get the idea out to more people and asked friends for name ideas for this blog. One of my best friends Shelly thought of Wardrobe Oxygen because she said the blog bring life to women's wardrobes. That and some clever banners and avatars by Sandy, and I was transformed into Wardrobe Oxygen! I think it is a perfect name - I am not trying to change anyone, just offer some advice to add freshness and air to any woman's wardrobe.2. Why Di...
