Being Stylish While Being Cool
2008-05-07 23:00:00 Today it is over 80 degrees in The Nation?s Capital? and today I have seen some of the worst work fashion travesties in months! Ladies, just because it is warm out does not mean decorum, class and style should go right out the window. It really is possible to stay cool and be cool about how you do it.1. Respect Your Profession. Even when I worked at a very trendy fashion boutique, I didn?t flash a lot of skin. I respected my company, and the clients who shopped there, so I chose to enjoy the summer months with a bit more skin showing, but not letting it all hang out. Unless you are a lifeguard, a waitress at Hooters or a car show model, there is rarely a reason why you should have your stomach showing for work (this includes those shirts that barely hit your waistband and show an inch or two every time you swing your arms or reach for something off a shelf). Tube tops, backless halter tops and dresses, and short shorts are included. Your office may be very casual, but as my old boss... More About: Stylish , Cool

Free Tip - Keep it Clean
2008-05-02 17:36:00 When was the last time you washed your makeup brushes? Not wiped them on a tissue to change shadow colors or even use a swab of makeup remover, but actually cleaned them? Not only will a good washing of your brushes keep them hygienic, it will help prevent breakouts from bacteria and miscellaneous crud being transferred to your skin, and also will help with the application and pigment level of your cosmetics. There are some great precuts out there specifically for the cleansing of makeup brushes, but I use shampoo. A tip I learned when I worked in skincare is to occasionally switch out the gentle shampoo with an antibacterial wash (I use the Body Shop?s Tea Tree Face Wash) to give the brushes a gentle yet thorough cleansing.Wet the bristles with warm water, trying to keep the water on the exposed bristles only. In the palm of your hand, mix a bit of shampoo or cleanser with water to form a soapy lather. Swirl the brush in your palm gently; you will see the lather become opaque or cha... In Honor of Spring
2008-04-29 16:07:00 I know many have probbaly seen this before or had it emailed to you by a girlfriend... well I got my first pedicure of the season this weekend and so felt inspired to share this. Very cute... and very good advice! (Thanks Amanda for sending this my way!) The Open Toed Shoe PledgeAs a member of the Cute Girl Sisterhood, I pledge to follow the Rules when wearing sandals and other open-toe shoes:I promise to always wear sandals that fit. My toes will not hang over and touch the ground, nor will my heels spill over the backs. The sides and tops of my feet will not pudge out between the straps.I will go polish-free or vow to keep the polish fresh, intact and chip-free. I will not cheat and just touch up my big toe.I will sand down any mounds of skin before they turn hard and yellow.I will shave the hairs off my big toe.I won't wear pantyhose even if my misinformed girlfriend, coworker, mother, sister tells me the toe seam really will stay under my toes if I tuck it there. If a strap b... Wardrobe Alternatives
2008-04-22 11:58:00 We all have safety nets in our wardrobe. These are items we collect because they are comfy, they are cheap and they often remind us of younger, happier and more fun days (come now, who doesn't get excited when the weather warms up enough for flip flops?). Problem is, many of these wardrobe safety nets are devoid of any style and often end up destroying the personal style we otherwise may possesses on a given day. How do you keep it easy, breezy, yet maintain your personal style? The Flip Flop AlternativeDon't get me wrong, I love flip flops as much as the next gal. This weekend when grabbing a pair so I could play in the yard with my dog, I rifled through eight different pairs to find my beloved Reefs. I have stacked ones for longer pants, crocheted ones that are a tad dressier, aqua ones to match my bathing suit, ones that work well in wet conditions, ones that work with certain sun dresses or beach coverups in my closet. The thing is, flip flops are not real shoes. They don't lo... More About: Alternatives

Reader Question - Jeans That Fit
2008-04-11 17:24:00 Hi Allie,I wanted to ask your opinion on something. I have a really difficult time buying pants, especially jeans. I have the flattest butt you will ever see in your life, however, my stomach is far from flat. I also have pretty skinny thighs. Most pants hang off my butt awkwardly and have lots of room in the thighs, and if I go a size smaller, they're too tight across my stomach and I get major rolls. Since sit-ups and squats aren't exactly my favorite, I'm not seeing my body shape change too much in the near future...Do you have any suggestions for brands that aren't made for girls with big booties? By the way, I'm 21 and attend a university. Thanks,AnnaHey Anna:Jeans seem to be harder for women to buy than bras ? they are a wardrobe staple, yet often times look horrible on a woman?s figure. They were originally sported by cowboys, but even a century of modifications haven?t quite made jeans a garment that always works with a feminine shape. However in the past couple of years... Reader Question: Summer Boots
2008-04-11 11:49:00 Hi Allie - Do you think boots are appropriate for summer (like tan ones for summer) for casual wear, with skirts or shift dresses, or is it better to save them for cooler weather? Thanks, AmyHey there Amy!I think it depends on where you are living and the trends of that area. I personally love a more casual boot with a fitted top and denim skirt for a barbecue or happy hour, and think floaty little dresses or shifts seem grounded with a sturdy boot. However I know that where I am (Washington DC) it is too humid and hot past June to sport anything but the strappiest of sandals and one would not only feel uncomfortable in knee-high leather, but look uncomfortable as well.I wouldn't buy boots for the purpose of summer wear, for you may find they are just too warm and awkward-looking to wear in 95-degree sunshine. However if you already own a pair, I am all for trying out new things and seeing how it feels and looks. I know I will most likely be wearing my casual tan mid-calf boots wit... My Experience with the Backless Bra by Maidenform
2008-04-07 15:26:00 As you know, I mentioned the Maidenform Breakthrough Backless Bra a couple of posts ago. I received a press release from Maidenform and was excited to try this. As a woman with large breasts, many fashions are impossible for me to wear because my bra would be showing. The concept of a backless bra geared toward busty gals seemed to be too good to be true.It is.The bra arrived this weekend. It is a molded cup bra and as soon as I saw the wide yet shallow cups, I had a feeling it wouldn?t work for my breasts. Molded cups don?t work for all shapes of large breasts, especially if those breasts are natural and have some age; many molded-cup bras are made to cover, but not support and lift. Second concern was the straps ? all elastic, and very narrow. Now narrow straps are great for sleeveless and tank styles of tops, but those of us with large busts know they usually don?t provide enough support. Being of all elastic also means they will usually provide less support and quickly stretch o... More About: Experience

Reader Question - Shopping for Swimwear
2008-04-04 16:05:00 Reader Laurie asked:I am wondering where you shop for swimwear. I have a body type very similar, although I've got quite a few years on you (55). I am in decent shape, would like a tank suit with medium high cut legs, but need a D cup underwire, if possible, or at the very least, good support for the girls. I don't want to look 18 but I also don't want to look 80 - difficult to find that middle ground. Any suggestions?Hey Laurie:Swimsuit shopping can be one of the most horrific experiences for a woman. Suits that have proper support often make one look heavier and older than reality, and cute suits usually don?t have the proper fabric or cut to flatter anyone but a pre-teen. As with any purchase, I recommend going for quality with a swimsuit so it fits, flatters, and maintains its shape and condition after many seasons in the sun, sand and chlorine. My favorite place for swimwear is Lands End. They have a really extensive collection; you can shop by body type (minimize shoulders a... More About: Shopping , Question , Reader , Swimwear
DUO Boots - Free International Shipping!
2008-04-02 18:44:00 I recently worked with DUO regarding the correct pair of boots for me. I decided to hold off until Fall, but was so impressed by their quick and courteous service. Via email I was able to discuss which style would be best for my frame and personal sense of style. I ordered a pair that had a minor defect ? when I contacted them, DUO immediately responded with an apology, informed me of how to return the pair and emailed me as soon as they received the boots. They asked how much it cost for me to return them so I could be properly reimbursed. I don?t think I have ever experienced such personal and pleasant customer service with a company. My DUO boots that I purchased several months ago are still great ? comfortable, stylish and sturdy.Well I just received this email ? free international shipping! Please Don't Try to Get This Look!
2008-03-27 21:59:00 The other day I was heading into the Metro to go to work and I passed the line of boxes offering the free papers for the community. I usually just pick up the Washington Post Express ? it?s exactly the length to read for my commute (skip the sports unless it?s baseball season, read the horoscope as I exit the train and drop it in the recycling bin). However a competitor daily commuter paper caught my eye ? Catherine Zeta Jones was on the front and it had an article inside discussing her fashion sense! I snagged it with my usual Express and headed into the station. This other paper was in the recycling bin before I even caught my train, and it was because of the so-called ?article? on how to get Zeta-Jones? look. They showed a photo of her at the opening of the remodeled Red Door Salon on Fifth Avenue in New York City, she was dressed in a lovely belted dress with a yellow coat over it. They then proceeded to show how a commoner like us could ?get? her look. Instead of a bracelet-slee...
Reader Question - Storing Out of Season Clothing
2008-03-27 17:29:00 Reader Joyce Asked:I invested in a few nice wool, silk and cashmere pieces over the fall and winter, and now that it's almost time to put them away, I am worried about keeping them in good condition until it's time to wear them again. Any suggestions on storing these garments during the warmer months? Hey Joyce:Perfect timing! I know here in the Nation?s Capital it was warm enough the past two days to go without a coat so it?s time in many parts of the world to start storing away the heavy winter garments and pull out the cotton and linen pieces! I?d be happy to share my steps for storing out-of-season garments:1. Clean Everything Before Storing. Even if it doesn?t have a stain, you will want each garment cleaned to remove any perspiration or invisible stains. Body odor and perfumes attract bugs, and invisible stains can set over the months and become quite obvious come the fall when the garments are pulled out to wear again. When cleaning, avoid the use of starch or fabric soften... More About: Clothing , Question , Reader , Season
Get Paid to Shop Online - Ebates
2008-03-26 17:56:00 I have to thank Jazzi at the utterly fabulous fashionista for this one, if it weren't for her post, I would have never known about this gem! And it's so good I had to share it with you guys!Ebates is similar to many free point-building programs where if you shop through their site, you will be rewarded. However what is cool about Ebates is that you earn actual money, not points for each of your purchases, and even get a $10 gift card to a store of your choice (the diva in me wanted Sephora, but the practical homemaker in me chose Target), just for signing up!So pretty much, you get paid to shop at your favorite retailers. And speaking of favorite retailers, Ebates has hundreds of stores they are partnered with, from department stores like Nordstrom and Kohl's, hotels and travel sites like Holiday Inn or Hotwire.com, online shops like iTunes, Zappos and Shutterfly, to speciality retailers like Lands End, Brookstone, Godiva and Sephora. Not too shabby!Enjoy! More About: Paid , Shop , Online , Get Paid To

Free Tip - Cut the Purse Strings!
2008-03-26 15:11:00 Each week I will be posting a free way that you can update your look or wardrobe - simple and budget friendly steps that are super easy to accomplish. This week's idea - cutting the purse strings! With use, leather and leather-like bags often start to fray, especially at the straps. We often miss this detail, with our purses becoming almost a part of our bodies. We throw them over our shoulder and don't usually give them a second look. Walking to work today, I saw several women (and men with messenger and laptop bags) carrying expensive looking and new styles of bags that looked a big raggedy just because of these wayward threads. With a pair of embroidery or cuticle scissors, snip all the little strings from the edges of your purse. While you're at it, grab your laptop bag, your favorite tote and any other handbags in your collection and give them a trim. You won't need to even touch the fabric, little scissors like this will get close enough to the bag for a clean finish withou... More About: Free , Strings

A Wide Calf Boot Update
2008-03-21 10:59:00 So as you know from many previous posts on here, I have wide calves and have dealt with many companies trying to find tall boots that fit and flatter my larger-than-average legs. Many of you have suggested having a cobbler stretch traditionally-sized boots, but to give you some perspective, the last boots I ordered that fit had a 45 cm calf... that's around an 18" shaft for Americans. Most regular boots are 14-15" and a wide calf boot in stores like J. Crew and Ann Taylor is usually around a 16-17" shaft. I know many many of you readers have the same issue - the "wide calf" boots available aren't wide enough or the selection plentiful enough.Well since my last review of specialty bootmaker Duo and plus size retailer Silhouettes, I have been doing some more boot shopping, searching for the Holy Grail of Wide -Calf Boot s, and I wanted to share my experiences with you.SilhouettesAfter the great experience with my brown suede boots from Silhouettes, I decided to try a few more styles. ... Reader Question ? How to Dress a Curvy Frame
2008-03-20 15:50:00 Reader Caroline asks:Hi Wardrobe Oxygen,I have a large bust (36DD) and am a size 8. I can never find shirts or jackets that look right on me. How does a curvy lady look feminine but not like she?s putting the girls out on display? What types of shirts and dresses should I be looking for?Hey Caroline:As a fellow large-busted woman, I feel your pain. Having the curves on top, but an average dress size means items are usually too small on top, or else too large in the waist and too long in the hemlines.First, here?s a list of things you should try to stay away from:Crewnecks and BoatnecksThese necklines usually make your bust look bigger, and seem to make your shoulders look just as large. Even though this example is on a small-busted woman, you can see how this style of neckline accentuates her bust area. A slightly rounded or v-neck can give the same amount of coverage, but will lengthen the look of your neck and expose part of your collarbone, showing the world you are not a lineba... Reader Request - Suits for Tall Women
2008-03-19 16:21:00 Reader Jamie writes in:I'm in law school and need to find a suit for my first upcoming 'practice' oral argument. The problem is I'm tall (5'10'') and am a 14-16. I would like to find something of good quality but not outrageously expensive. Any suggestions on where to start?Hey there Jamie:I really don?t understand why the selection for tall women is so lacking; when I was a personal shopper I would guess a third had issues with sleeve and hem lengths ? maybe they were tall, possibly high-waisted, or slimmer than standard (a Size 2 isn?t always 5?5?!).JC Penney is a place to find reasonably-priced suiting in very simple, professional styles. This jacket, skirt and suit combo in a subtle pinstripe would be great for your argument, post-bar in the courtroom, or even as separates for casual days at work or out on the town.I have a love/hate relationship with New York & Company; sometimes they have beautiful and well-made pieces, and sometimes they have an entire store full o... Support the Fight Against MS
2008-03-19 14:54:00 I?ll be honest, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) wasn?t a disease I understood, or even thought about a decade ago. I lumped it with all those ?random? illnesses with initials that some lesser-known celebrity was diagnosed with, or that was a cause adopted by a bigger-name celebrity. I didn?t know anyone with MS, so it didn?t affect me.Then my now-sister-in-law was diagnosed with MS. It opened my eyes; fellow humans are being diagnosed with chronic illnesses every day ? we don?t need to know them intimately to care and get involved. The only way to beat these diseases is to be informed and involved. From the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Web site:Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable a... Site Review - Taaz
2008-03-18 18:26:00 I remember in 1997 when my family got our first home computer, I got a program from Cosmopolitan Magazine that let me load a picture of myself and try myself in different hairstyles and colors. The hair never looked natural and was something fun to giggle over with friends, but wasn?t a useful tool in deciding how to change my look.Over a decade later, technology has improved and there are a few sites out there that offer a semi-realistic look of how you may be with long red curls or a blonde spiky ?do, and even with colored contacts or red lipstick. Fun to play around, but not really useful to know which products or colors to purchase.Until Taaz. Taaz is a site where like many, you upload your picture and can change your look. However Taaz offers some extra fancy features that can make a fun site more accurate and useful for your next shopping trip. When you upload your photo, the site asks you to point out the outside of your eyes and lips, and then offers points where you can adju... The Commuter Curse
2008-03-18 15:48:00 One of the greatest things about my new job is taking public transportation. I know you must think I am crazy to say that, but I love the People Watching (a sport that deserve to be capitalized), and I love the interaction. For years I have lived in my car, alone on my rush hour commute and then alone in my office or cubicle for the majority of the day. Often I would spend a day never speaking to a soul outside of a hello when passing a coworker in the hallway. Now I get to read, listen to music, and be surrounded by my fellow humans. It's pretty great... until I am assaulted by the hideous fashion of the Woman Commuter.I too am a female commuter, and I understand why so many fellow women end up getting the Commuter Curse . It is so easy, so comfortable, and you think no one will notice.Well ladies, though we may pretend that the sweaty mouth-breather may not be pressed up against us on the subway, we are not invisible. Think about your next commuter - try as you may to hide behind ...
