Making the Router Decision: Horsepower vs. Rated Amperage

When shopping for your next router you’ll likely come down to performance as a key decision factor. One of the most obvious ways to measure performance is horsepower. But, as the Rockler blog noted recently, “there’s more than one way to measure horsepower, and some aren’t a good indication of how a router will work in an actual woodworking situation.” Your best bet will be to gauge the KIND of work you intend to do with a particular router and fit that to a rated amperage. As the Rockler blog says: “If you need a router mainly for light -duty, handheld machining for inlay and whatnot, a king-sized 15 amp model might not be the best choice. If you’ve been an online woodworker for any length of time you’ve probably come across Wood Shop Demos, a friendly and welcoming website that provides a step-by-step photo guide to woodworking projects. This is not a “how-to” site though and there are no plans that I could find for any of the projects. Instead you’ll find a photos of a project as it’s completed, with commentary from John Lucas that’s full of gems of woodworking observation. Like this one, from “Making a Silver Chest“: To compensate for any slight “tilt” to the router, she runs the boards so that one edge is run with the face down and the other edge with the face up. Our most recent question called for the help of Tool Historians: I have my father’s old #41 Yankee drill and I would like to know if I can still buy the bits for it? There are 10 spaces in the handle and I need to replace some bits, I think they are 3/32–3/16–13/64 and 7/32, anyway these are the ones I’m looking for.
