Affordable Fashion From Across the Pond
2007-09-15 05:20:00 Asos.com is a must for any fashion forward, budget conscious woman. Asos is a predominant shopping website in the UK but whose goodies can be shipped to shoppers in the US. Asos? clearance section is unbelievable. There are hundreds of items on sale and most range between 10 and 40 dollars. You can buy anything from going out dresses to comfy shoes. Asos? main deal is that they sell clothes which are styled after a designer something or another that celebs like Sienna Miller, Nicole Richie, and Kimberly Stewart have worn but at a fraction of the cost. Asos carries brands from French Connection to Kitson to Rock & Republic. It?s not just women?s clothes and shoes that Asos sells. Need chic champagne glasses? You can buy them at Asos. What about makeup, jewelry, and designer handbags? Yes, you can buy them too. Even Asos? regular priced clothing is not expensive. Putting the Pretty in Ugg-Ly
2007-09-14 22:21:00 Take the UGG-LY out of your Uggs, and snuggle your feet into a pair of Cozy?s by Steve Madden. As a Syracuse, New York native, I know how important a warm pair of boots is as soon as the snow hits the streets. Now you don?t have to surrender style to stay toasty! These new winter boots are everything that you love and need in a good boot. The (f)Ugg had at least some things right, and good ol? Steve took some tips. Cozy will hit your upper calf and is lined with shearling to keep your toes happy even in below zero weather. Its outer shell is suede and comes in thirteen different colors. What I noticed first about these shoes, is the cute little bow at the ankle that breathes fresh life into this once stale style. Check out more styles for whatever weather condition you?ll come across. Who knows, you might even be tempted to wear these year round! They look great paired with stockings and skirts - and with colors like rose, ice and purple, it won?t be difficult to revive t... More About: Putting , Pretty
Wax Poetic Salon
2007-09-13 19:27:00 By: Kris Marvin Hughes For those valley-dwellers who are obsessive about being able to multi-task even when out of work, you will be in love with Wax Poetic Salon in Burbank. Where else can you get your hair done, your back massaged, and your bikini-line waxed all while taking in an art show and downing a complimentary cocktail. Well, thanks to Wax Poetic Salon, it?s possible. While initially the idea of a salon being connected to an art gallery may confuse you, from the moment you step in to the salon you see exactly why this works. The lobby is essentially the art gallery which includes a wonderfully stocked bar with alcohol and E-lix-r Tonics. I mean, come on, how many times can you read a Cosmo while waiting to be waxed? It?s so much more fun to be drinking a free glass of Stella on tap while perusing the modern art from local artists. And when it?s time to get the hair ripped from your eyebrows, you?re a little more relaxed and feel as though you got in a little culture...
Joshua Tree (Eastside)
2007-09-13 16:15:00 by: Amanda Fornecker Do you want to dance with somebody? Maybe feel the heat with somebody? Well, look no further than the Josh ua Tree (Eastside). You can hear fabulous tunes just like Whitney's, making this bar an exciting place to be. I love the 80s! There are lots of plasma televisions set up that play the music videos of these old time tunes. And a few even play Sportscenter, in true sports bar fashion. With 12 satellite TV systems, you can watch your favorite sports teams play at all times. There are two bars - one in the front and one in the back, which is great to alleviate some of the bar-goer traffic. From Tuesdays to Sundays there's a DJ after 8pm and Sundays also entail karaoke after 9. But you're sure to start your very own karaoke session at any point with the loud sounds of this great music! This is the Eastside counterpart to the Westside location. Located on Third Avenue, amongst a string of bars, the Joshua Tree is certainly one of the most hopping places to be ...
Maya Brenner Brings Charm Back
2007-09-12 21:35:00 Want to dress like a celebrity and have that star appeal? Well, here?s your chance. Jessica Simpson was recently spotted (looking more fabulous than ever!) leaving the trendy Hollywood club, Les Deux. She was wearing the Maya Brenner ?Texas? Necklace, available at www.mayabrenner.com. Char m Jewelry has been making a comeback in recent years, and I?d like to thank Maya Brenner for her effort ? I think she single-handedly pioneered the comeback. Charm jewelry may conjure images of silver cast roller skates and Eiffel Towers, but bear with me; you?ll find nothing that traditional or childish in her collections. Maya Brenner designs are versatile, simultaneously delicate and bold, with a hint of bohemian-chic. In addition to the state necklaces like the one Jessica was wearing at Les Deux, Maya Brenner designs feature elements of nature like feathers, leaves, and even starfish, all done in sterling silver and 14k gold. Additionally, she incorporates splashes of color with gems and beads... More About: Back
Short Sleeves Heat up Winter Fashion
2007-09-11 03:19:00 Some women don?t like winter because it?s impossible to show skin. Others don?t like it because it?s impossible to feel sexy in layers of bulky clothes. I think we may have finally found a solution to both these issues. Fresh off the rack this fall season is the short(er) sleeve jacket. Now, I can?t comment on the functionality of wearing short(er) sleeves in winter, or even fall for that matter, but I will say that I love this look and I endorse it 110%. It?s a great way to differentiate yourself from the crowd of black jackets. And even though silhouettes are generally slimming down this season, the short sleeve can be one way to incorporate a little volume ? volume in a place that won?t horribly distort your proportions. To say nothing of the fact that the short sleeve jacket is also a great way to show off your tres chic gloves (also hot this season, so it's a perfect pairing)...what are you waiting for? Jackets are a big investment, so be sure to choose one that you?ll like ... More About: Fashion , Winter , Heat , Short , Fash
3.1 Phillip Lim reveals worldly spring 2008 collection
2007-09-11 02:30:00 Even though his line was only launched in the fall of 2005, Phillip Lim has already become the darling of the fashion world, creating classic American sportswear for more-affordable-than-average prices. Working with Katayone Adeli and helping launch Development before moving into creating his own line, Lim quickly garnered glowing reviews. In 2006 he won the Women's Designer Rising Star award given by Fashion Group International and recently he won the Council of Fashion Designers of America award for emerging talent in women's wear. So it was with great anticipation that Lim revealed his spring collection. He said he "wanted to make clothes that were ready for travel," Lim revealed his 3.1 Phillip Lim spring 2008 collection on Sunday September 9th during New York's fashion week, going on now. The show began with Lim favorite, model Irina Lazareanu strolling down the runway in a khaki trench coat, white button down shirt, white harem-style pants, and a large white tie, ready for... Russian Haven: Okeanos Spa
2007-09-10 18:51:00 Not your typical spa, the Russian -flavored Okeanos has a regular clientele of ballerinas, athletes and celebrities. Its signature ?platza? treatment is very common in Russia, but it is transformed into a more luxurious version in this spa. You are in a sauna, face down, for about ten minutes, and your skin is brushed with oak and birch leaves. After which you stand under an ice cold shower and repeat the process ? face up. The platza treatment opens pores and helps with circulation. Athletes love it, and for the layman ? consider it your bottle of Echinacea, since it builds the immune system. Other signature treatments like the Caviar Wrap, Exfoliating Back Sea Scrub and Siberian Hot Stone massage complete the Cossack experience. And the lovely little café offers free vodka shots (compliments of ZYR) and sumptuous blinis. Geared towards men, Okeanos also has a cigar room. I go to Okeanos because it?s so unusual, and for the exotic menu offerings. The staff is so friendly, and the c... More About: Haven
Great Hole in the Wall Bookstore
2007-09-10 07:31:00 A friend took me to this fantastic book store, outside of the outdoor Eastern market in DC. It's a cavern of used books at great prices, and the people there are super friendly. Yes, it's easier to order stuff off the internet, but there's something to say for just wandering through towers of books stacked alongside steep stairs. Here is why the bookstore rocks: 1. On a brutally hot Saturday, there was a punchbowl full of free, perfectly strong Margaritas for all those perusing. 2. There is a room called the Mystery room-- partially filled with Mystery novels and partially filled with random literary ephemera. Books that are somehow outside of other categories, along with great literary biographies and a ton of Anais Nin's diaries (she was the author Henry Miller's lover and an erotic fiction writer. Also almost all her diaries, over 8 at least, were published post-humously. Fantastic, excting, sexy stuff). 3. If the Mystery room doesn't intrigue you, there is also the Busines... Change Your Ring As Often As You Change Your Mind
2007-09-10 03:19:00 Ever have one of those days where you are rushing to get dressed, put on the easiest thing you can grab, and then on your way to work ?only to decide you hate your outfit? "Got All of Your Marbles" has some great jewelry to put a little sparkle to your ensemble and a spring in your step. These outfit enhancers are so whimsical. The fun starts with selecting from a ring, earrings or a pendant. Once you decide what piece you want, you then need to figure out what size you like. Each piece varies in size from "itty bitty" (ten millimeter) to "whopper" (an inch around). The coolest part is what these pieces of jewelry feature The star of the show is a perfectly round marble. Don't be fooled, though. Although these "gems" may remind you of that game you may have played when you were a kid, the shiny babies used in the jewelry give it a modern, unique twist. Depending on what size of jewelry you choose, you also get five to thirty marbles to switch out. So, you can switch out a blue for ... More About: Change , Mind , Ring , Chang , Chan
Lush Handmade Cosmetics
2007-09-10 02:52:00 I stumbled upon Lush Handmade Cosmetics located right by the entrance of Macy?s department store on Michigan Avenue- jam-packed with sniffing, smiling fans. Not only is the name itself intriguing, but the copious stacks of bowls and baskets filled with multi-colored bath balls makes it look like a pretty, girly ice cream shop. I soon found out that my simulation was closer than I thought with their signature scents like Haagenbath and Each Peach. LUSH prides itself in their commitment to non-animal testing, use of fresh, natural ingredients and fair-trading in all of their products. Not being much of a fizzy bath person myself, I found out that they are equally well known for their natural soaps. Forgotten concepts like shampoo bar soap and deodorant soap came as a fragrant surprise. I especially enjoy their Sexy Peel (a citrus-smelling lemon peel exfoliating soap), their popular Avowash (an avocado and olive oil rich soap) and the fruity Angel?s Delight bar filled with cute little ... Loeffler Randall and Chie Mihara @ Shopgirls
2007-09-10 00:20:00 I cannot even begin to describe how excited I was to find that Shopgirls, in Costa Mesa, has started to carry Loeffler Randall shoes and clothes! For those of you unfamiliar with the line, let me just say it?s something to see. The shoes and clothes are gorgeous in classic styles but with a modern twist. They are very sophisticated without being overly stuff and conservative. The pieces at Shopgirls exemplify just that. The shoes, crafted in Italy, produce a quality that is hard to beat. And the clothes drape perfectly over your body no matter what your shape. That said, also new at Shopgirls is the shoe line Chie Mihara. Coming from Spain, these shoes achieve the impossible by combining uniquely chic design and ultimate comfort. They will be your feet?s best friend. The comfort comes from the shoe?s ability to hug your foot, giving it complete support, without squeezing it in a death hold. And the pitch of the heels gives you enough lift without tiring your foot out so y... More About: Hara
Fab Fall Frocks
2007-09-09 17:32:00 If you're like me, then Fall is a tough season when it comes to fashion. On any given chilly weekend, you'll probably find me in jeans and a sweatshirt. The image alone makes me shudder. I feel like I'm in fashion limbo. For some reason, once September hits, I almost don't know what to do with myself. I continue on like this until November comes around and I can get away with my Winter duds. No more! This season, there are so many great options. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Fall dresses that are all over the place. Gap has a great one that comes in a purple-ish/red color, black, or grey. The fabric is kind like a t-shirt material, so it's comfy but still looks dressy at the same time. Depending on the color you like, the price ranges from $34.99-$49.50. Not bad for a Fall staple piece. The best part? This dress works for all seasons. For Fall, pair it with a pair of thin sweater tights and some ballet flats. Winter calls for thicker tights and a pair of boots. Once Spri...

Four Easy Steps to Your Cleanest Face
2007-09-08 07:20:00 Everyone knows that keeping your face clean (and keeping your hands off of it! I mean you!) is the best way to prevent breakouts and keep your skin radiant. However, some women don?t know the simplest routine to ensure that the best is being done for your skin?s overall health. Here are four easy steps: 1) Makeup Remover ? I like to start with makeup remover, because some cleansers will contain residues or oils (which you should avoid if you can help). A separate, gentler cleanser for your eyes is probably a good idea unless you?re not wearing a lot of eye makeup. 2) Wash Thoroughly ? Now you?ll want to wash your entire face, even removing the trace of the remover. Some people will argue that hot water is best, some cold. In truth, if you?re diligent, hot water to open and cleanse your pores is best followed by very cold water, to re-seal your pores. 3) Astringent Cleaner ? Astringents will come in an assortment for your skin type. This is a deeper clean than washing alone will ... More About: Face , Easy , Steps

Mod Lighting to Brighten Up Your Pad
2007-09-07 03:37:00 When I found these light fixtures online, I fell in love with their cute design and mod style. I had to do a double take when I saw who made them: the two and only Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. I had long forgotten about their line of clothing (ahem, fashion and lifestyle collections,) once only available at Wal Mart until I came upon their home décor line after doing some research for my new apartment. Whether you?re looking for a desk lamp, a floor lamp, a chandelier or a wall sconce, MK & A have what you?re looking for in their Create-A-Shade Collection of lighting. What is unique about this line is that you create what colors, style and patterns you want and the good people at ELK Lighting will pimp out the perfect look for you. Go on their website and type in your zip code to figure out where they're sold around you! Pastels? Bright colors? Solid colors? A mix of everything? You got it, dude!
Powell's City of Books
2007-09-06 22:20:00 I admit, I?m a dork; there is nothing I would rather do than read. Books are especially good reading material. So when I visited my boyfriend in his hometown of Portland, OR, I was totally excited to visit the famed Powell 's City of Books. The place is huge, taking up an entire city block, stocked full of every genre imaginable and some you can?t even imagine. It?s part warehouse, part library. They even have a large section of unique gifts and gizmos for the bibliophile, not to mention everyone else you and your mama ever met. Powell?s even buys used books, which is great for college students who have had their old textbooks rejected by their school?s buyback system (and yes, I speak from personal experience). You could spend days in Powell?s and never explore all they have to offer. If you ever make it to the Northwest, be sure to stop by, but you don?t have to be in the Rose City to enjoy the wonders of Powell?s, their website is also fabulous, and even includes a section of u... Bar 13
2007-09-05 22:01:00 As summer draws to a quick close you'll want to take advantage of the brisk summer breezes and the chance to catch up with old friends atop a roof in New York City. You can do this at Bar 13, which gives you different music options and scenery. A club-like atmosphere, Bar 13 provides two floors of DJ entertainment and a rooftop, with chairs where you can take in the great outdoors, buildings of the City, and a good time with friends. There's no bar up there, but the closest bar is just a short flight of stairs that will take you down to the second floor. The lighting inside is dim and intimate as lots of people in their early- to mid-20s dance, sing, and have a good time. On the first floor, there is a bright bar, with large lava lamps adorning the bar top. There's also open space that partygoers use as the dance floor. Bouncers can be found throughout the bar, regulating the population on the roof (so it's never overly crowded) and keeping the traffic flow on the staircases in ...
PDT
2007-09-05 03:41:00 All right, I?m going to let you in on a secret, but Please Don?t Tell. There is a great little speak easy that just opened in June called PDT. You enter through a small hot dog joint, walk into an old phone booth, pick up the phone, and voila! A door opens and you?re let into a modern bar with vintage values. While the fact that it?s a speak easy is cool and the way that you get in is fun, what I was most impressed with at PDT was the staff and the drink selection. Everyone who works there is friendly and laid back. The bartender actually enjoys figuring out new concoctions and takes the time to talk to his customers. The drinks are old fashioned, many of them containing egg whites and hard to find liquors, such as Creme de Violet, which is featured on the menu in the Silver Lily. If you take the time to look at the bar, they have an array of alcohol you wished you could find when you were flipping through your Savoy Cocktail Book. If you?re looking for an interesting to pla...
The KnockOut - Nicki McGrath
2007-09-05 00:25:00 This club isn't super new but it is most DEFINITELY notable with a punk rock meets The Supremes sound and shrunken heads with a Latin flair as decoration. The crowd can occasionally be impressive, even during happy hour, with all sorts of interesting folks from drummer chics to biker boys to software tattooed geeks and film nerds. The red-tinted lighting makes everybody pretty and the owner is always around with his magical DJ hands and old school pony tail. Drinks are ridiculously priced - as in cheap! The decor covering the walls is endless and hard to look away from with various glow-in-the-dark posters and blown-up arrest photos of notorious convicts. If you feel the need to remember your visit to The KnockOut but alas, forgot your digital camera don't you worry. For $3 bucks you can have your very own special photos taken in the Amelie styled photo booth with a lovely blue background for grandma's fridge or a naughty red for your own (wink wink). Saltaus
2007-09-04 23:38:00 On the weekends, my girlfriends and I usually choose a neighborhood dive bar or BYOB sushi spot to celebrate our singledom (and stretch our inadequate pay checks). But I?m afraid Salta us, a contemporary, Zen-inspired destination in Chicago?s West Loop, has changed our low class taste for good. This posh restaurant and lounge, located at 1350 West Randolph Street, is where ?the hottest of the hot? gather, per the restaurant owner?s beaming declaration. The VIP space reserved for a friend?s Bachelorette party was ideal for the small plates/wine pairings that were previously arranged. And to top it off, our attentive waiter couldn?t have been more adorable, I mean, knowledgeable about each course. The sleek architectural design of the interior and minimalist outdoor patio highlighted the contemporary chef-selected canapés, including the group fav-Risotto Cakes. These lightly fried spheres, made with parmesan cheese and served with a pesto sauce, were crispy on the outside and had a cr... More About: Alta
Tinto Tapas Bar West Hollywood
2007-09-03 16:46:00 Finally - an upscale restaurant in West Hollywood that we can head to before and after the clubs. Now that the area between Gardner and Fairfax on Santa Monica has upped their glitter quotient (and I am not talking about a transvestite with a boa, I am talking about Porsches, Ferraris and your occasional Prius properly valeted in a parking lot and a line outside the door of an official, Hollywood hot spot club), we can hopefully expect some fabulous late night fare. Locals, I think it's time to admit we're all over the only late night eats in the area involving an ATM machine, Gardenburger and a location that could easily have been cast for American Graffiti. Because the fact is this - we are so much better than that. Why blow the diet eating junk when cap off your night at an elegant Tapas bar? Tinto , located at Santa Monica and Gardner, is offering us a chance at authentic Spanish happiness. This gorgeous wine / tapas bar has taken over what used to be Hunter's Bar and is op... The Pod Hotel NYC
2007-09-02 20:48:00 Every time I visit New York, I stay in The Pod Hotel . Centrally located in Midtown East, The Pod not only has great views of the Chrysler Building, it?s a short taxi ride to both Uptown and the Village and Soho. For me, staying at The Pod is like coming home, as I lived just three short blocks away for ten years. Luckily, this newly renovated European-style hotel sprouted up just after I moved to San Francisco. The Pod world consists of appropriately tiny-size rooms, with touches like iPod docks and stainless steel vanities for a thoroughly modern look. The Pod is a tourist class hotel offering $99 rooms, a bargain in a city where the norm hovers at three times that. For the price you share a bathroom in the hallway (something I?ve never done even on trips to Europe, but hey, this is New York). The communal bathrooms are brand-new and in pristine condition with lots of stainless steel and polished granite. Larger rooms that include a bath are slightly more expensive. The deci...
