Derma Technique Spa
2007-09-06 06:48:00 Step into this serene setting and let it all go. From the friendliest staff to massages that take you to another universe, Derma Technique Spa is the place to go when you are looking for a low key, relaxing experience. Located in a shopping strip, Derma Technique appears to be your standard, run-of-the-mill spa, offering services such as facials, massages and manicures. But from the second you ring to book your appointment, you'll find something different. Efficient, pleasant receptionists walk you through every service they offer without being wordy or overzealous. Once you arrive for your appointment, a staff member walks you to a plush, living room-like setting where citrus water and the scent of gorgeous candles await. We tend to get there early just so we do have a chance to take in the delicious waiting room! Derma Technique ranks far above any other spa in the city, with both gracious faces and stellar techniques used in their services. Facials (and all skin treatments, for... More About: Nique
Bar 13
2007-09-05 22:01:00 As summer draws to a quick close you'll want to take advantage of the brisk summer breezes and the chance to catch up with old friends atop a roof in New York City. You can do this at Bar 13, which gives you different music options and scenery. A club-like atmosphere, Bar 13 provides two floors of DJ entertainment and a rooftop, with chairs where you can take in the great outdoors, buildings of the City, and a good time with friends. There's no bar up there, but the closest bar is just a short flight of stairs that will take you down to the second floor. The lighting inside is dim and intimate as lots of people in their early- to mid-20s dance, sing, and have a good time. On the first floor, there is a bright bar, with large lava lamps adorning the bar top. There's also open space that partygoers use as the dance floor. Bouncers can be found throughout the bar, regulating the population on the roof (so it's never overly crowded) and keeping the traffic flow on the staircases in ...
PDT
2007-09-05 03:41:00 All right, I?m going to let you in on a secret, but Please Don?t Tell. There is a great little speak easy that just opened in June called PDT. You enter through a small hot dog joint, walk into an old phone booth, pick up the phone, and voila! A door opens and you?re let into a modern bar with vintage values. While the fact that it?s a speak easy is cool and the way that you get in is fun, what I was most impressed with at PDT was the staff and the drink selection. Everyone who works there is friendly and laid back. The bartender actually enjoys figuring out new concoctions and takes the time to talk to his customers. The drinks are old fashioned, many of them containing egg whites and hard to find liquors, such as Creme de Violet, which is featured on the menu in the Silver Lily. If you take the time to look at the bar, they have an array of alcohol you wished you could find when you were flipping through your Savoy Cocktail Book. If you?re looking for an interesting to pla...
The KnockOut - Nicki McGrath
2007-09-05 00:25:00 This club isn't super new but it is most DEFINITELY notable with a punk rock meets The Supremes sound and shrunken heads with a Latin flair as decoration. The crowd can occasionally be impressive, even during happy hour, with all sorts of interesting folks from drummer chics to biker boys to software tattooed geeks and film nerds. The red-tinted lighting makes everybody pretty and the owner is always around with his magical DJ hands and old school pony tail. Drinks are ridiculously priced - as in cheap! The decor covering the walls is endless and hard to look away from with various glow-in-the-dark posters and blown-up arrest photos of notorious convicts. If you feel the need to remember your visit to The KnockOut but alas, forgot your digital camera don't you worry. For $3 bucks you can have your very own special photos taken in the Amelie styled photo booth with a lovely blue background for grandma's fridge or a naughty red for your own (wink wink). Mondays enjoy Karaoke and ... More About: Knockout
Saltaus
2007-09-04 23:38:00 On the weekends, my girlfriends and I usually choose a neighborhood dive bar or BYOB sushi spot to celebrate our singledom (and stretch our inadequate pay checks). But I?m afraid Salta us, a contemporary, Zen-inspired destination in Chicago?s West Loop, has changed our low class taste for good. This posh restaurant and lounge, located at 1350 West Randolph Street, is where ?the hottest of the hot? gather, per the restaurant owner?s beaming declaration. The VIP space reserved for a friend?s Bachelorette party was ideal for the small plates/wine pairings that were previously arranged. And to top it off, our attentive waiter couldn?t have been more adorable, I mean, knowledgeable about each course. The sleek architectural design of the interior and minimalist outdoor patio highlighted the contemporary chef-selected canapés, including the group fav-Risotto Cakes. These lightly fried spheres, made with parmesan cheese and served with a pesto sauce, were crispy on the outside and had a cr... More About: Alta
Tinto Tapas Bar West Hollywood
2007-09-03 16:46:00 Finally - an upscale restaurant in West Hollywood that we can head to before and after the clubs. Now that the area between Gardner and Fairfax on Santa Monica has upped their glitter quotient (and I am not talking about a transvestite with a boa, I am talking about Porsches, Ferraris and your occasional Prius properly valeted in a parking lot and a line outside the door of an official, Hollywood hot spot club), we can hopefully expect some fabulous late night fare. Locals, I think it's time to admit we're all over the only late night eats in the area involving an ATM machine, Gardenburger and a location that could easily have been cast for American Graffiti. Because the fact is this - we are so much better than that. Why blow the diet eating junk when cap off your night at an elegant Tapas bar? Tinto , located at Santa Monica and Gardner, is offering us a chance at authentic Spanish happiness. This gorgeous wine / tapas bar has taken over what used to be Hunter's Bar and is op... Reminiscence Inc.
2007-09-03 02:18:00 If you ever find yourself longing for the days when Frankie Said Relax, mousse was a hair product and not a desert and bands like Oingo Boingo and the Bangles rules the pop charts take a moment to flashback to the ?Greed is Good? era and stroll on down to Remi niscence, a cheesy, kitschy but never boring vintage store. In the front of Reminiscence shop, you?ll find fun trinkets such as whoopee cushions, magic eighth ball and Mad Libs. They also have silly putty, wind up toys, and those little foam things that you put in water and they grow in five minutes. There?s also a neat selection of jewelry and pendants in glass cases up front. Head toward the middle of the shop and here?s where all the sartorial fun begins. Fluffy prom dresses, funky t-shirts with slogans, outfits with glitter and sparkles and giant shoulder pads to start with. Just be careful when walking around the clothing stands. They are packed tightly together. Toward the back are the dressing rooms and shoes. It?s kin...
The Pod Hotel NYC
2007-09-02 20:48:00 Every time I visit New York, I stay in The Pod Hotel . Centrally located in Midtown East, The Pod not only has great views of the Chrysler Building, it?s a short taxi ride to both Uptown and the Village and Soho. For me, staying at The Pod is like coming home, as I lived just three short blocks away for ten years. Luckily, this newly renovated European-style hotel sprouted up just after I moved to San Francisco. The Pod world consists of appropriately tiny-size rooms, with touches like iPod docks and stainless steel vanities for a thoroughly modern look. The Pod is a tourist class hotel offering $99 rooms, a bargain in a city where the norm hovers at three times that. For the price you share a bathroom in the hallway (something I?ve never done even on trips to Europe, but hey, this is New York). The communal bathrooms are brand-new and in pristine condition with lots of stainless steel and polished granite. Larger rooms that include a bath are slightly more expensive. The deci...

Celadon Galerie
2007-09-01 21:38:00 With it's small plates of asian-fusion cuisine, Celadon Galerie boasts an eclectic menu that offers something for everyone in a setting that is fitting for any social occasion. First date? Sharing dishes of pan-roasted halibut and steamed spicy szechuan wontons is the perfect way to break the ice with Mister Oh-So-Fabulous Blue Eyes. Or maybe it's girl night, and the evening demands fruity mixed drinks and mojitos poured with an expert's hand. And that birthday party requiring ample room and scene to accomodate a large group? Celadon's friendly (and attractive!) servers will keep the plates of tuna tartar lollipops coming at a steady pace! Whatever it is that attracts Celadon's eclectic mix of diners to spend an evening there, the zen-like ambiance and atmospheric lighting make for a setting that is difficult to leave. The Delancey: Rooftop BBQs and Dancing!
2007-09-01 18:29:00 It?s getting harder and harder to find a great club that?s under the ?Bridge and Tunnel? radar and doesn?t cheat its patrons with crazy covers. But after a recent visit to The D elancey, my faith in NYC nightlife is reborn! Complete with a gorgeous tropical rooftop, The Delancey is perfect for enjoying the last days of summer in style. Every Tuesday night from 7-10pm, there are rooftop BBQs: free to hang out and $5 for food! I can always appreciate a great DJ, and with a wide variety of them on The Delancey?s roster, different nights will give you and your friends a menagerie of music to shake it too. There?s also a downstairs area where there?s often live music. With the great music and multiple levels of fun, book your next party at The Delancey. I attended a 21st birthday bash, and friends were able to reserve a seating area for free. Visit www.thedelancey.com to see a listing of upcoming events! More About: Dancing
Swift is a Crowd Pleaser
2007-09-01 17:56:00 Swift is the type of bar that my friend insists, ?I never pay for a drink here.? True to her word, this pub is packed wall to wall with cute Irish Wall Street-types and parties of friends who are always inviting you to join in whatever their celebrating. It?s difficult to find a great bar that your girl and guy pals can all agree on and Swift might just be it. Everything from the beer menu to the food menu to the music makes Swift a great nighttime haunt. Their international beer menu is full of almost 100 drinks on tap or by the bottle ($5 and up). More than a bar, Swift is complete with a DJ who plays anything from Lily Allen to Justin. Swfit sometimes even has live music. Their pretty traditional food menu covers all of the bar bases while mixing comfort foods with classics. Mini burgers ($5.50) chicken wings ($5.50) and ?Swift Dollar Dogs? ($1) share menu space with Dean?s Cottage Pie ($8) and Bangars & Mash ($8). For special occasions you can call to book a party, bu... More About: Crowd , Swift
Cosmic Cantina for out of this world nachos and margaritas!
2007-09-01 17:25:00 Sangria, margaritas, beer, organic burritos - don?t pass up Cosmic Cant ina as another mediocre college crowded bar among the others near Union Square. It?s a great place to satisfy your hunger for any of the above at any time of the day. Any burrito joint where you can actually eat healthy is my kind of place. The ingredients are fresh, the options are full of greens and vegetarian options, and some are even organic. My top favorites are the Spin City burrito ($7) with a whole wheat tortilla, spinach and mushroom and the unbeatable Deluxe Nacho s . Try them vegetarian ($8) or with chicken ($11) or steak ($12) and the delicious guac and fresh chips will blow you away. Sit outside on a nice day or indoors if not. At night, you can stop by Cosmic Cantina for a drink and some chips and salsa at the bar in the back of the restaurant. The music is usually good and loud and goes great with a pitcher or two of margarita ($28) or red or white sangria ($17 at the bar.) At late night, yo... More About: World
Amélie of Nob Hill
2007-09-01 09:43:00 Everybody loves Amélie. When I hear the name what immediately comes to mind is the favorite film featuring the sweet and fantastically quirky Amélie of Monmartre. Audrey Tatou plays the gamine French girl with a heart for helping people stuck in emotional gridlock. San Francisco now has its own Amélie, a saucy new wine bar on Polk Street in Nob Hill , with its own version of vino therapy. Come here to recoup with a glass of wine and a tasty bite. Amélie presents a huge wine list, with selections from velvety viogniers to berryful Bordeaux. There?s Lillet for the ladies and a range of beer on tap. Nibble on small plates of cheese and olives, or opt for something more substantial like the ravioli. A happy hour special on weeknights offers three wine tastings for $10. Post-modern art decorates the space, including a mobile above the bar and frosty wine bottles glowing on the walls. A passage from Victor Hugo?s The Legend of the Centuries is stenciled en Français on the ceiling i...
The Great Brunch Debate
2007-09-01 01:27:00 It?s Sunday morning edging into the afternoon. Do you want breakfast or lunch? You shouldn?t have to choose. These days, most bistros offer brunch, usually starting from ten am until three. My question was, where should I go when I live in a city with so many options? I decided to head into Roscoe Village. One, I could walk there and not have to fight the maddening Sunday crowds who were in no doubt, all trying to figure out where to eat. Two, I knew that Roscoe Village had several restaurants with a brunch menu and outdoor seating. Near the corner of Damen and Roscoe amidst trendy shops is Kitsch?n. This neighborhood favorite looked just as crowded as it?s rival, Orange, just next door. I decided to take a chance on Kitsch?n. The model-like hostess was friendly and said that for a table for two, the wait would be considerably low if I said first available seating. Within two minutes, I was seated inside near the window which was almost as good as being outside. The inside ... More About: Brunch , Great , Debate , The G

Alice's Tea Cup
2007-08-31 04:47:00 Once upon a time in a whimsical borough called Manhattan there was a charming little place where friends could go enjoy the delightful tradition of afternoon tea? Watercress (A Cafe)
2007-08-29 02:02:00 By: Kris Marvin Hughes From the very moment you step into this adorably modern café, you will feel as though you are a welcome guest in Chef Cindy?s home. Decorated very simply, but extremely elegantly, this delightful café has an ever-changing menu filled with mouthwatering homemade soups, salads and sandwiches. They even have a nice selection of bottled beverages at the front counter to choose from (Jones soda anyone?) They have a number of dark wood tables and chairs, as well as a few bench seats and an adorable window bench that overlooks Ventura Boulevard. On my first visit, I had the tomato gazpacho soup which was served in a very modern-art-looking bowl accented by fresh chunks of avocado which floated happily in the soup. I also devoured a delightfully fresh Tomato and Buffala Mozzarella Panini which I have to say was the best one I?ve ever had. As if I wasn?t already impressed with the atmosphere of Watercress and the artfully-presented amazing food, I was downright ... More About: Cafe , Cres

Not only does this place carry amazing tasting dishes, but it also has a trendy atmosphere that is bound to make you eating out experience a lot of fun. Ninth Gate offers a variety of food choices, great for a meat lover, a vegi lover and a spicy food lover. This place also offers a lot of food at very reasonable prices. For example, for about $9.95 CAN, you can anjoy a plate of Bulgogi with rice, dim sum, array of appetizers, edomame beans, and noodles...And this place has amazing staff, who are always ready to answer any questions not only about Korean cuisine, but also Korean culture. Haru
2007-08-28 16:55:00 by: Amanda Fornecker For a posh and yummy evening check out Haru. Rolls are an average price and there are specialty drinks to be ordered from a fully stocked bar. The dim lighting sets an intimate scene, but it's not just for the couple with the romantic anniversary. You can come to Haru for a chill night with a group or to catch up with your long lost friend. With multiple locations throughout the city, you'll be able to enjoy some good Japanese food at your convenience. Upon entering the Gramercy Park location, there's a waterfall and two floors, making the ambience very pleasant and exciting. Farther uptown, there's a Haru restaurant and a Haru sake bar just across the street. The sake bar serves a full menu as well. The wait staff is attentive and the food is definitely very tasty. It does tend to get crowded, especially on weekends so reservations are usually a good idea. But if you go during off times, like most restaurants (early or late) you'll be able to get a table ...

Rasha - Nicki McGrath
2007-08-26 20:15:00 Under new management, Rasha reopened its doors where it sits packed between bars on 16th street only to look like one itself until you actually go in, and even then the ambiance isn't so removed from a good little pub. The food is inexpensive and what you would expect for San Francisco with such great places as Bodhi or Osha for competition. The Pad Thai was delicious and enough to share with a friend and the cucumber salad refreshing and sweet. While my girlfriends and I ate we sat by the front window comfortably on cushions and pillows, watching the busy street outside as a Grey's Anatomy rerun played up on the flat screen muted with Bob Marley as its substitute soundtrack. Our server was very helpful in what we might like and took great care of us. I would recommend Rasha as a place to stop before heading to the nearby bars such as Kilowatz or The Elixar where having a stomach full of food comes in handy. It won't break the bank and it's a nice place to enjoy others company.... More About: Restaurant
Cantina - Nicki McGrath
2007-08-26 19:55:00 It was a happy accident recently when a friend and I wandered into Cant ina, a small but beautifully decorated bar brand new to Union Square (but lacking a sign, hence the chance that we would walk in). For such a stylish place with its Latin inspiration, art-covered walls and tree stump stools at the bar, I was rather surprised there weren't more people. The bartender working was extremely nice to us and she made some memorable drinks; one in particular I still dream about called a Laughing Buddha that includes vodka and ginger....and I wouldn't say I laughed but I was definitely smiling. I only hope that more people stumble upon Cantina because it makes a great escape to such a busy Square and that's just the type of atmosphere we could use. It had a similar feeling to the equally small Otis (a bar on Maiden Lane) where going for happy hour with your friends and enjoying intimate conversations is easy but at Cantina the Latin flair and funk or remixed salsa playing in the backg...
Moonstruck Chocolate Cafe
2007-08-25 16:31:00 Since childhood I have always thought that Swiss Miss instant cocoa was the height of sophistication in the realm of hot chocolate. The powdery clumps bubbling on top, fishing out the marshmallows that never seemed to come in a sip. But now that I?m a little older I was curious to find this ?gourmet hot chocolate? jazz everyone was talking about. I came across Moonstruck chocolate café after my Michigan Ave. shopping spree and I instantly knew that my daily sugar allowance may as well be thrown off the bridge right then and there. Moonstruck?s selection came as a sweet surprise with their amazing menu offering 9 different kinds of hot chocolate. Nine! From their double-dark to their Mexican vanilla spice blend, their cocoa selection blew every Swiss Miss mix out of the water. In addition to their cocoa, they also have a generous selection of chocolates and truffles (which they do, in fact, sample). Their knowledgeable staff also informed me that the chocolates are shipped daily fro... More About: Restaurant , Chocolate , Cafe , Chocolat , Choco
Savannah: A Genteel City Who Knows A Good Time!
2007-08-25 01:18:00 If you are looking for a vacation spot with a city vibe and Southern Hospitality, then head to Sava nnah , Georgia. Just three hours southeast from Atlanta, Savannah is one of America?s oldest cities but with some of the best party spots. Blasted into the public eye by the book and film, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Savannah has become more popular in recent years but with good cause. Charming, historic homes double as bed and breakfasts and many of them are surrounded by sweeping trees with Spanish Moss. Savannah?s famous squares are easy to walk to and fun to explore. There?s an abundance of hotels, but I usually stay at the Hyatt Regency. It?s stylish, the rooms are huge, and the staff make you feel right at home. The best part, though, is that the Hyatt has it?s own entrance to River Street, the main hub in Savannah. No matter what day it is or what the weather?s like, River Street is always bustling. Jazz musicians playing along the Savannah River can be hear... More About: Time , City

Finding Your Sweet Spot at Kyotofu Dessert Bar
2007-08-24 20:49:00 You?ve tried the city?s best tofu salads, enjoyed a tofu wrap, and indulged in the latest tofu burger creation. Since there?s always room for dessert, be sure to head over to Kyotofu for an elegant preparation of your favorite soy-based necessity. Less than a year in operation, Kyotofu is one of New York City?s sweet spots when that craving hits; this dessert bar will have you fooled into thinking it?s another sushi place with its modern Japanese décor and meditative environment. However, a quick peek at the menu proves that this isn?t the place for modest tastes; choose from a sweet sampler of fresh baked goodies (available at noon), and treat your inner chocoholic with healthful snacks such as Mini Miso Choko Cake or a cookie box to accompany your afternoon espresso.
