Extreme Heat Causes Spontaneous Combustion of Playgrounds
2007-08-15 18:31:00
Extreme temperatures caused mulch cushioning on a playground in Arlington, Texas to catch fire. Spontaneous combustion is to blame, and 20 playgrounds were closed in response to the danger. Wood chips containing plywood glues and chemicals are more likely to self-combust in high temperatures, thus the playgrounds will be substituting pea gravel for their cushioning requirements. As our planet's climate changes, we will hear more strange news like this of how extreme temperatures are causing problems we had not anticipated.

9 Million More Toys Recalled by Mattel for Dangerous Magnets
2007-08-14 16:31:00
This time my family is affected by the recent recall by Mattel . There will be tears in our household today, as toys Grandpa bought my daughter are included on the list. The concern is powerful magnets that can be swallowed and cause major damage. The list includes:Barbie and Tanner - hazardous magnetBatman - hazardous magnetPolly Pockets - hazardous magnetDoggie Daycare - hazardous magnet One Piece - hazardous magnetSarge cars - lead in paintAll affected toys were made in China. Another recall occurred earlier for Mag Stix Magnetic Building Sets, as serious intestinal injury can occur from swallowing these powerful magnets. This was another toy we had in our home. A child living relatively close to our home suffered major injuries from swallowing loose magnets. "Extensive surgery was required to remove the magnets and repair intestinal perforations," according to the CPSC. Magnets are very cool for children to experiment with, but safety should always be the concern of toy manuf...

Great Children's Literature: Little Yellow Pear Tomatoes
2007-08-14 02:22:00
Little Yellow Pear Tomatoes comes from my favorite children's literature publisher Illumination Arts. In this book, a little girl marvels at the circle of life in her little yellow pear tomatoes. She says, "Everyone and everything-my daddy, my mommy, bugs and worms, clouds and sky, lakes and rivers, the sun and stars-are parts of the tomato you cannot see. Take away any one, and the little yellow pear tomatoes in my garden could not be." This book takes its inspiration from the author's little girl and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. The interconnectedness of life is the theme of Little Yellow Pear Tomatoes, as the book is very thought provoking for children and grown ups. This is my favorite book of the five, and I can never look at the yellow pear tomatoes in my garden the same after reading this book.

Massive Toy Recall by Fisher-Price
2007-08-10 17:07:00
I've avoided blogging about the massive Fisher -Price toy recall for a week now, as these are not eco toys, but I can't bite my tongue anymore. Besides, even if you only buy your children natural toys, there are times when toys like these creep into your life from well-meaning relatives or your child themselves. Our family is fortunate not to own or have owned any of the recalled toys, but I am once again, flabbergasted that toys designed for children would contain lead. This is not new information that lead is hazardous to our health, so why do Chinese manufacturers continue to use it? Is it that cost effective that it is worth harming workers and children? I just don't get it. You can see a full list with pictures of the recalled items here. I worry about the conditions Chinese workers who apply this lead-based paint work in, as their health has most certainly been compromised. There are so many reasons to avoid Chinese made toys, as recent recalls have demonstrated. Chin...

Waldorf Kathe Kruse Mermaid Doll
2007-08-09 17:29:00
Little girls love mermaids, and I love Waldorf dolls. I have always been drawn to the work of dollmaker Kathe Kruse, the oldest German doll company. "Handwork, simplicity of design, integrity, and an aversion to gimmicks and fads are still very much a part of how the dolls are made. Each doll and item of doll clothing is made by hand and takes from 16 to 36 hours to make. During that time, it will pass through the hands of 8 to 10 craftspeople and artists."Magic Cabin offers an affordable, Small Waldorf Mermaid by Kathe Kruse. This doll is made of all natural cotton, wool, and mohair. The tail is removable, allowing the doll to live on land, as well as the sea of your child's imagination. The detailing on the doll includes beading and shimmering threads. My daughter adores her Small Waldorf Mermaid, which makes the perfect travel companion due to her small size. Kathe Kruse makes natural toys you can feel good about!

The Best Shoes For Little Paws
2007-03-19 14:55:00
When my first child started to crawl, a friend gave me a used pair of Robeez shoes/slippers. I quickly fell in love with these natural, leather shoes for babies. I wanted my child to be able to keep her socks on during the cold winter months, but I didn't want her in hard sole shoes. I believe that growing feet should be allowed to grow naturally, not conforming to a shoemaker's idea about how the foot should be structured. Robeez allow your child's foot to grow naturally, as if the child was barefoot (which is what I advocate in warm months). Without Robeez, my daughter's socks would not stay on. I tried other leather and wool booties, but they would also fall off her feet. Robeez solved the problem, and both of my kids wore them well into toddlerhood. Here's the story behind Robeez, "Sandra set out to handcraft a pair of brightly colored, soft-soled leather shoes for young Robert. She was pleased to discover that the shoes seemed to improve his balance, because the s...

Who Needs Diapers?
2007-03-18 16:06:00
Have you ever wondered what families in third world countries or far back in history did for diapers? I have until I received the National Resource Defence Council's "This Green Life" in my inbox. In North America, we assume diapers are a normal part of infancy and toddlerhood, but it doesn't have to be that way. Having a diaperless babe works like this, "The method goes by a variety of names: elimination communication, natural infant hygiene and infant potty training, though the last is spurned by many who say there is no training involved. Whatever it's called, it boils down to this: the parent looks for the signals (hand-clenching, grunting, squirming, a look of inner concentration, etc.) that the baby regularly shows in advance of having to go, then takes the infant to the pot, sink or potty, and makes a special "cuing" noise -- for instance, "sss" -- to signal back that it's ok to proceed. Soon the baby makes the association. The family now has a communication system that ...

20% of Chinese Toys Unfit for Children
2007-03-17 16:42:00
There is reason to be concerned about toys made in China, which is most of the toys in the world market. According to news reports in India (US news agencies have failed to pick up on the story), 20% of toys made in China are unfit for children. Quality tests revealed industrial waste and gauze discarded by hospitals in toys made in China! This is an improvement from 25% of toys made in China that were found unfit last year. Many of my friends boycott products made in China due to human rights violations in Tibet. I am not sure that buying products made in the US gives the consumer a clear conscious. There is no guarantee that just because a product was made in the US that the workers were paid living wages and received health care benefits. In addition, the US's record on human rights violations is not clean. Watch the Ghosts of Abu Ghraib for a deplorable example of US torture and violations of the Geneva Convention. Buying from green companies, no matter their location, ...

B is for Bob Inspired T-Shirts
2007-03-16 17:12:00
This is a follow up post to "One Love", as we have made our B is for Bob inspired t-shirts. Using Adobe Photoshop, I created the images to be printed on the shirts; however, any word processing program could be used. In the previous post, I mentioned the print needed to be flipped for it to appear correctly on the shirt. This step is not necessary for the HP iron-on paper, but it is neccessary for some brands of iron transfer paper. The HP paper allows you to iron the image on without flipping it. After the image is pasted/inserted into a document and sized, the text is added. Next, using your ink jet printer, print the image. Follow the directions in the package of iron paper to peel away the backing, use a thin piece of tissue paper transfer paper on top, and then iron the image onto the shirt. Voila, you have your own custom made t-shirt! The children and parents of my preschool were so excited for their personal name shirts. These shirts are great for teaching name reco...

An Eco Child's Play Experiment: Lead in Backpacks?
2007-03-15 23:26:00
Given all the latest information about lead in children's lunchboxes, I became worried about my daughter's backpack. Her backpack, obviously bought by Grandma and adored by my daughter, is made by a very commercial company (Disney) that targets children through character promotion (princesses). Since it has some vinyl on it, I wondered if it also contained lead like certain vinyl lunchboxes. I bought this home lead test kit at our local hardware store (I laugh when I use the word local to describe a hardware store two hours away) to do our own experiment. The test kit is very easy to use. A few drops of water is applied to a pad, then the surface of the backpack is gently rubbed for a couple of minutes. The results: her backpack is lead-free. We are relieved by the results, but I do wonder if lead is present in other vinyl products designed for children.

Great Girl Fun
2007-03-14 17:06:00
My daughter purchased the Easy-to-do Ballerina Doll Making Kit at a museum gift shop. Over the weekend, we assembled her doll. This was a great activity for us to do together. The doll making kit comes with everything you need to assemble your doll, and the directions are easy to follow. The doll body is made of unbleached muslin fabric; however, I am sure the inside filling is polyester. The other materials are a combination of synthetic and natural fibers, so I am not sure if the Easy-to-do Ballerina Doll Making Kit fully qualifies as a natural toy. The kit is rated for children five and above; however, the fine motor skills required to assemble the doll would be difficult for a kindergartner to do alone. The two-sided tape was especially difficult to peel. My daughter did apply glue, wrap the yarn for the hair, and peel the tape. Even though she was unable to do more of the construction, it was still a great experience. The doll is highly cherished.

Sigg Update
2007-03-14 01:37:00
March 12, 2007 – Letter from Steve Wasik, President, SIGG USA:On March 9th, it was brought to my attention that a website sponsored by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) made mention that SIGG bottles contain plastic liners with bisphenol A (BPA).I can assure you that SIGG bottles are absolutely not made with a plastic liner and are in fact lined with a proprietary non-toxic, water-based resin which has been refined over decades of study and is extremely safe & stable. Based on the confidence we have in our product backed by numerous laboratory studies, we questioned the EWG and requested that they provide us with the testing they have conducted on SIGG – or alternatively to remove the “SIGG” mention from their website if they have not tested SIGG. Within 24 hours of this request, the EWG removed SIGG’s name from their report. Unfortunately, in the meantime this message was picked up by a few other websites, one of those being The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) and...

A safe alternative to reusable plastic containers, the 10 oz Stainless Steel Vacuum Food Jar stainless steel construction will not leak harmful chemicals and is neutral to taste and smell. Natural Silk Seclusion
2007-03-11 16:13:00
Silk is a wonderful, natural fiber that inspires your child's imagination. Silk Fantasy Bowers can be hung over a child's bed or from the ceiling to create a nice, cozy, private space. Children love intimate places, and every child should have such a special place to retreat to when their emotions are strong. Magic Cabin offers many versions of the silk fantasy bower. The fabric is very light and not meant for rough and tumble play. My daughter has the rose bower. Because they are made of real silk, the Magic Cabin fantasy bowers are expensive. We found our silk rose bower at a local toy store 50% off, and it is made by Sarah's Silks. I have seen cheaper versions of play bowers on ebay and other sites; however, these bowers are not made of silk but polyester. If you want you child to be surrounded by natural materials, the silk bower is for you!

Feeling Lucky?
2007-03-10 16:15:00
Our good friends' daughter attends the Pleasant Ridge Waldorf School in Wisconsin. The school is sponsoring a Good Energy Raffle. The grand prize is a hybrid car or solar power system or solar/wind power system for any home/person in the US. Each raffle ticket is $50. At first, I thought the raffle ticket's price was very expensive, then I realized the school is limiting the number of tickets sold to 2,060 tickets. These are good odds for winning your own alternative energy system or hybrid car valued at $23,000. Please click here to buy raffle tickets (if you live in Wisconsin). If you live outside of Wisconsin, please contact steve@thekickapoo.net to buy raffle tickets.

Explore Gravity with a Rainbow Roller
2007-03-09 15:39:00
I am always fascinated by watching a young child discover the properties of gravity. I remember one grocery store experience, where my daughter repeatedly dropped things from her seat in the cart to the floor. She thought it was very entertaining to watch Mommy pick it up and kept repeating the activity. As we were standing in line to check out, a woman noticed my frustration. She said to me, "Isn't it wonderful she is exploring gravity!" This kind woman's perspective helped change my attitude from one of annoyance to one of amazement. Any toy that allows your child to discover gravity will be popular in your home, and the Rain bow Roll er made by Alex is a wonderful natural toy. I have seen several different versions of the Rainbow Roller in various Montessori catalogues, but we have the one made by Alex (it can be purchased through Amazon or Magic Cabin). The brightly colored Rainbow Roller is aesthetically pleasing and made of environmentally friendly rubberwood. It comes...

Powerful Message
2007-03-08 15:44:00
I saw this video on Green Parenting and found its message very powerful and moving. I forwarded it to many of my friends and family members. Even the Bush supporters were moved by the message and signed the petition. To me, raising an eco-child is more than providing natural toys, but teaching love, compassion, and tolerance for all of earth's creatures.

A Natural, Organic Lunch Bag
2007-03-07 16:25:00
ReusableBags.com offers yet another excellent alternative to vinyl lunch bags. The Acme Organic Cotton Canvas Lunch Bag is a simple, affordable option for lead-free lunches. The organic unbleached cotton bag is surprisingly roomy, fitting my daughter's entire lunch and snack for the day in it. The only drawback to the Acme Organic Cotton Canvas Lunch Bag is the relationship between the handle and velcro closure. My daughter found that when she carried the bag by it's single strap, it caused the velcro closure on the top of the bag to open. In addition, the handle seems undersized for heavy lunch contents. Despite these drawbacks, I really like this organic lunch bag. It reminds me of the paper sacks of my youth in its simplicity, and it is perfect if you do not need an insulating bag. And thankfully, the organic fabric is not covered in promotions for corporate character's targeted at children. Fair labor and wages are used in the manufacturing of this bag. The bag is mac...

Safe Sippy Cups: Sigg vs. Klean Kanteen
2007-03-06 16:13:00
9 March 07 Update: According to an email message from reusablebags.com, "We just wanted to send your our response to the recent alarm over the SIGG water bottles: The proprietary SIGG bottle lining is a water-based, non-toxic coating that is baked into the interior walls and remains flexible and crack resistant for the life of the bottle. This special SIGG lining is not plastic – it is a micro-thin epoxy… SIGG bottles exceed FDA requirements… Unlike common Lexan plastic water bottles (polycarbonate #7), which studies have shown over time may leach harmful chemicals like bisphenol – A (BPA), SIGGs have been thoroughly tested to ensure they are 100% leach-free and 100% safe!” (SIGG 2007 Product Catalog) I still don't like the idea of an epoxy liner in my children's water bottle. 8 March 07 Update: According to Organic Consumer's Association, "Many metal water bottles, such as those sold by the brand Sigg are lined with a plastic coating that contains BPA. Look for stai...

Super Cool Wooden Cars by Automoblox
2007-03-05 16:02:00
Automoblox has combined design and function to create these super cool wooden cars with minimal plastic parts. Is it a car? Is it a puzzle? Automoblox cars come apart, and the parts are interchangeable. We have had our red Automoblox sport coupe (designed by Callelo) for a year, and both of my children love to play with it. The little plastic people have different shapes on their bottoms that insert into the car seats, furthering the puzzle experience. The people and tire treads do pose choking hazards, thus the Automoblox cars are rated for children over three years of age; however, we allow our two year old son to play with his. If your child has moved beyond the oral exploration stage, the toy is safe for use with supervision. Another bonus is there are not too many parts to get lost around the house when the Automoblox is disassembled. Unfortunately, the product is assembled in China for sale. Automoblox's creator had several bad experiences and was lied to about the...

Who Is the Consumer Product Safety Commission?
2007-03-04 16:16:00
With the news of lead in lunchbags and bpa risks in baby bottles and sippy cups, I have been wondering who and what the Consumer Product Saftey Commission (CPSC) is. The CPSC is an "independent" agency of the US federal government, meaning it does not exist within any department in the Executive branch; however, the president appoints commissioners. The Commission is normally made up of three commissioners, but one seat has been vacant since July 2006. My friend Tim alerted me to the issue that the commission can no longer act with just two commissioners. Bush proposes to appoint Michael E. Baroody to the CPSC. Baroody is the chief lobbyist for the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), a powerful trade group that opposes aggressive product safety regulation. What a logical choice for the agency that protects American consumers from unsafe products! The CPSC can still issue recall alerts in this "semi-neutered status",but it can not impose fines on companies that violate...

Lead-free Lunch: Part 3
2007-03-03 16:11:00
When I alerted my friend Laura of the Bar 717 Ranch Children's Camp to the lead in lunchbag issue, she found a great company ReusableBags.com, offering a critically acclaimed line of reusable shopping bags plus a growing family of smart, earth-friendly products all designed to help you reduce, reuse and save. ReusableBags.com offers many lead free lunch boxes, as well as great products such as Klean Kanteen and Sigg water bottles and sippy cups. ReusableBags.com graciously sent Eco Child's Play some sample products. On Friday, we tested the Cool Totes Insulated Lunch Bag, available in many great patterns for children and adults. The Cool Tote Insulated Lunch Bag is made from Therma Tek insulation, which is made from recycled soda bottles! There is a velcro closure if you chose the shoulder strap model or a buckel closure for the backpack model. Included with the Cool Totes Insulated Lunch Bag is a non-toxic reusable freezer pack that has its own pocket inside the Cool Tote bag. ...

Wooden Parking Garage
2007-03-02 18:16:00
Living in a family of all girl children, my access to typical "boy" toys was limited to other people's houses. One of my early childhood memories is playing with my best friend's brother's plastic parking garage. I loved working the elevator and letting gravity pull the cars down the ramps. When I saw a wooden version of the parking garage, I had to buy if for my son's birthday. Actually, my daughter was the one that found it and really wanted it for herself. She tried to convince her dad to build her one. Wheel Town Park ing Garage is available through Hearthsong for about $60. Made of wood, this natural toy replicates the plastic version of the toy. The Wheel Town Parking Garage has three different levels and comes with a working elevator, helicopter pad (helicopter sold separately), gas pump island, one car, and a car wash. There is place where you can attach wooden railway or roadway tracks and expand the play. Additional accessories are available, such as a Wheel ...

Green, Green, Organic Lawn
2007-03-02 01:16:00
We spend a lot of time playing outside and having a beautiful, soft, green lawn is important to me. After many years of experimenting, I have figured out the best way to get an organic lawn: regular watering and Gardens Alive Lawns Alive! fertilizer. I have tried other organic fertilizers purchased from local gardening stores, but nothing competes with the beauty of a Garden's Alive lawn. Gardens Alive makes several different fertilizers for your lawn. I use the Fall Lawns Alive! in the October and Spring Lawns Alive! in March. These fertilizers are specially designed with all natural ingredients that quick release and gradually release. Just two applications a year is all that is needed, compared to four or five applications a year with chemical fertilizers. I would not want my children or pets playing on a chemically fertilized lawn. Growing up, I remember seeing signs on chemically treated lawns warning people and pets (like pets can read) to stay off the lawn for 24 h...

Mother Can I Trust the Government?
2007-02-28 18:31:00
Once again, the government has failed to protect the youngest citizens. Yesterday, it was announced that the most common baby bottles may be dangerous. The baby bottles in question are made of hard, clear plastic made with Bisphenol A, also called BPA. Heating a BPA bottle increases the amount of leaching, which is a common practice for warming breastmilk or formula in a bottle. Babies and young children are most at risk from the leaching effects of BPA. According to a CNN article (courtesy of the Web Savant), "Rachel Gibson, a lawyer for Los Angeles-based Environment California, said the laboratory tests on bottles from all five brands - Avent, Dr. Brown's, Evenflo, Gerber and Playtex (Charts) - were found to leach bisphenol A at amounts known to harm animals in laboratory animal studies." Environment California Research and Policy Center conducted the independent test on baby bottles. “Parents cannot be expected to deal with these issues on their own,” said Gibson. ...

Downshifting Week-Slow Down and Green Up!
2007-02-27 16:41:00
April 21-April 27 is National Down shifting Week , created by sustainable living writer and broadcaster Tracey Smith. During this week, citizens in the UK and US are asked to "Slow Down and Green Up!" Here are a few tips from the press release to help you downshift: · Cut up a credit card - “Learning to live within our means is key to downshifting and positively embracing living with less is better still.” · Plant something in the garden you can cultivate and eat - “Grow a few tomatoes or chillies on a windowsill if you have no garden; pesticide-free produce tastes amazing. It also breaks the myth that all food comes from the supermarkets!” · Contact local food producers and re-think your vending machines at work – “Low mileage food and drinks and Fair Trade and Organic treats in the workplace…whatever next!” · Book a half-day off work to spend with someone you love, no DIY allowed - “How can we have ‘quality time’ with great people, if we spend so much of ...

Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends
2007-02-26 18:15:00
Both of my kids became interested in Thomas the Tank Engine wooden railway system when they were two years old. I have always been amazed at how this simple wooden toy sustains their attention. It is true that many children and families succumb to the mass merchandising for Thomas toys, clothes, etc.; however, the wooden railway system is a natural toy that is common to many households in America. In my opinion, that is a good thing. Of course, there are many plastic Thomas toys, but I find the wooden railway system of good quality and designed for open-ended play. It is neat to watch a child evolve from depending on adults to build the tracks to creating their own unique track systems, which is very good for learning about spatial relationships. The train play can be open-ended with children making up their own storylines; however, I do know children that rely on storylines from the tv program for their train play. Thomas the Tank Engine wooden toys are expensive, but they do...

Do You Need a Good Laugh?
2007-02-25 16:08:00
Searching around the Blogsphere, I came across this hilarious list of "The Top 10 Most Ridiculous Products for Baby" writtne by blogger Matt Dinniman. Although this list does not contain natural toys, there are several items that try to mimic natural processes or parenting. Personally, I think the above pictured cradle by Moffi is rather cool; however, I understand Matt's opinion that, "I bet it's probably really comfortable for the baby, but man is it creepy. If the baby spends too much time in this thing he'll probably end up on late-night radio in 30 years talking about his repressed memories of being abducted by aliens." Number 8 on the list is product designed to allow men to "breastfeed". Matt even includes a link about a man who was able to lactate! (Click here to read.) Number one on Matt's list is the above pictured Zaky Pillow. Matt describes the Zaky Pillow as, "Disembodied zombie hands to hold the baby in place. I don't care how well they say this works. Eco-Friendly Lunch Bag
2007-02-01 19:26:00
As a child, I remember taking my lunch to school in one of those classic metal lunch boxes. I think mine had Scooby Doo on it. When I outgrew the lunch box, I remember using a small brown paper bag. My parents would buy these disposable bags in large quantities for everyone in the family to use. In fact, "brown bag lunch" is synonymous with bringing a lunch from home to school or work. Now, children bring their lunches in insulated soft cooler-type containers. Recently, I read a post on Mindful Momma about the lunch bag dilemna. Her experience with reusable lunch bags bought at Target is that they don't last. In her post "Lunch bag Woes", she suggests buying a lunch bag made from recycled billboards made by Relan. This is a cool idea; however, I wonder what kind of inks and other products are used in the creation of billboards. Would these products be safe around food? Besides, the billboard lunchbags are pricey at $26. My daughter uses the Reusable Lunch Bag from Magic C...

Finally, A Safe Sippy Cup
2007-01-19 18:05:00
I am so excited to have found a non-leaching, safe sippy cup made by Klean Kanteen, the stainless steel alternative to plastic. Klean Kanteen makes the best stainless steel water bottles. They are odor free and do not taste like metal. We have tried other stainless steel bottles that smell horribly and are lined with epoxy. Plastic/polycarbonate bottles leach bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that mimics the hormone estrogen, and can cause chromosonal abnormalities. An article a friend gave me stated that baby bottles are made of the worst kind of plastic, as well as the Nalgene bottles I have used for decades. Any Klean Kanteen bottle can be turned into a sippy cup by buying the adaptor and spouts. Of course the Klean Kanteen sippy cup costs more than plastic versions, but the cost is small when you consider the benefit to your child's health. Besides, as my daughter said, now my son is the coolest kid in preschool with his shiny Klean Kanteen sippy cup. Here are a couple links ...
