Quick Update

OMG, this weekend has been so intense! First of all I got all excited because I met Nia Vardalos and she is the sweetest person in the world! We met three days in a row: first for drinks at the Village Idiot on Melrose on Friday night and we had a blast, then at some club downtown LA and last night she came to our house where I hosted a small get together and stayed up until late. Meanwhile the blog went down several times on Saturday, I experienced a nervous breakdown during which I also punched my poor laptop almost destroying it completely... the good thing is that I ended up buying a new one which made me realize how badly I needed it. Of course now I have to start all over again plus learn how to navigate in the freaking Vista and all that with a terrible headache from the weekend's hangover. To top all these off, my dearest friend Alexandros a journalist from Greece is visiting these days but has no car so I had to drive him around the town, which I gladly did... obviously. S...

Obama Is The New Black

Generally I don't blog about text designs and even more I don't blog about political designs. But in this case I couldn't help it! The shirt reads "Obama Is The New Black ", which I find ingenious. It works in so many levels... In my short Google search to find more about this line I also found a very interesting article posted in latimes.com written by Gregory Rodriguez back in Dec 2006. Anyhow, I'm not a US citizen and I don't vote but I'm sympathetic to Obama and I think this shirt stands out among the tons of other pro Obama designs.

New Shirts by Bang Bang

Three new designs are now available at Bang Bang T-shirts. The first one, Ninja, is the winner of last year's 80's themed design contest and is basically a parody of 80's ninja and kung fu movies. The second is inspired by maybe the most beloved movie/comic book villain ever, the Joker, and boy is he creepy... lol... The last design and my personal favorite (you know me; I'm more of a visual person) is the winner of the Superheroes contest and is an amazing take on Superman. Also, I hear from James at Bang Bang T-shirts that they will attempt to break the world record for most t-shirts ever worn (I'm sure you've seen several videos at YouTube attempting the same thing). As you understand they're gonna need quite a few t-shirts, so if any of you have shirts to give away you can contact James and your help will be much appreciated. Kiss of Death

I totally loved Go Ape's latest design, Kiss of Death . It looks like lately I dig all Go Ape shirts... So anyway, Kiss of Death is designed by Australian artist Simon Noynay (aka Huskworks)who has an amazing range of illustrations and t-shirt designs to check out at his website. Funny thing about this artist, earlier today while checking out his webpage I stumbled upon a very beautiful design with the name "Return to Hades" and immediately thought that would be great for a DBH shirt. Well, what do you know? He has already submitted it and is doing pretty well with the votes and soon enough we are gonna be talking about it! Please please please vote for it... But for the moment let's enjoy Kiss of Death at Go Ape.

InkBath Shirts

I just found this site and I think it has potential. Based in Nashville, InkBath consists of several independent artists from all around the world. What I like about this type of groups is the diversity of the artwork; there are so many different styles to choose from. The shirts go for $19 and I like the fact that there are plenty of detailed photos. My only concern is that the designs are not categorized by gender, so it's a little confusing since not all of them come for both genders.

The Truth Hurts

German brand Gulasch Baron released a pretty sick new design this week. It's called The Truth Hurts (ladies click here) and is limited to 250 pieces. The designer is the very talented German artist Martin Krusche who is also the founder of Yackfou. There's nothing to add about the design really; as I said it's pretty sick and odd and I love it! Hans and Fras Shirts

So I'm feeling a little better today, actually it was my first day out at last, and believe me, I see the world through different eyes! But enough with me; I so want to introduce you to this new t-shirt shop! When I say "new" I really mean new, they are less than a month old. Hans and Fras has some damn cute t-shirts, very simple looking, very Asian, very innocent and then not so innocent (lol). Their whole, let's say idea, is to bring us back when we were kids and we had this favorite shirt that had that cute little character on it and we wore it all the time. And to some extend they succeed it. Now Hans and Fras shirts come in limited quantities, since they are individually hand printed using silkscreening process, and with a card with the run number on it. As I said the site is fairly new and I would like to see some more designs and some more photos of the products in different colors.

So I'm still sick, my throat aches, I can barely hear my voice, my whole body is in pain because I stayed in bed all day yesterday and... I cannot take the boredomness anymore! So I thought I should get up, take a shower, and cheer up a little! Fortunately for me I just received a newsletter from Vintage Vantage saying that they have a huge sale offering a bunch of t-shirts for 10 bucks! I always wanted to buy this t-shirt and today I got my chance. They also have some pretty cool new designs up like this Spacemen shirt... Ok, I think I'm gonna go back to bed now...that was enough excitement for one day....

I so dig this new Threadless design! The artist, Michael B. Myers Jr. (aka slaterock), created In Pachydermic Fashion as a continuation of his Select Threadless winning and very very very popular design, In Oceanic Fashion. I've talked about this artist in the past in connection with Cotton Werks and his Berry Thieves design which is one of my most favorite designs ever. He has about 10 winning designs at Threadless, among them Pending Peril and The Wandering Troubadours are again some of my most beloved Threadless designs. What I like about slaterock's work is his attention to details, his linework, and how he uses his colors. But especially in this one I love the lighting...

It looks like today is my lucky day and the reason is because I discovered a couple of new kick ass stores, one of them being MessHead Clothing . I have absolutely no information about these guys, besides what I could read in their "about" page, but I do know that they have some very creative, strong designs. Honestly I have the urge to buy every piece in this store and, luckily for me, the prices are insane! My top two picks are Make Amends and Baby Beluga and that's after a huge debate (trust me). MessHead designs are printed on American Apparel and sold through District Lines.

The Pencil Man

Among the recent winners of the "Mech-Tech" competition at Allmightys there was this brilliant design by artist YONIL. According to the artist "The Pencil Man" is a metaphor; the sharpener symbolizes the mind, the idea, the concept whereas the pencil symbolizes the tools, the hands, who actually create the final piece of art. It's very interesting to see this kind of designs, who offer a great insight, being chosen and awarded. The next Allmightys competition is titled "I am Thinking.." so I'm excited to see what designs it will bring us...

I just read an interesting article at Custom T-Shirt Talk about Zazzle trying to recruit some of Cafepress' shopkeepers. Truth is that Zazzle has been changing a lot lately, improving the website and changing their commission policy. So I contacted some friends who happen to be CP shopkeepers and it looks like for couple of those this happens to be the case. According to some rumors, a big share of Zazzle has been bought by the Murdoch Corp and if that's truth it may justify the changes, the inflow of capital, and this "aggressive" tactic.Now the question is, why someone would leave Cafepress to migrate to Zazzle? One reason I can think right away is the printing quality and the product variety that Zazzle offers. I recently bought a t-shirt from Zazzle and I have to admit their printing quality is amazing in comparison to anything I've ever bought from CP. Another reason could be the better service. Tee vs Tee is Addictive!

I just discovered Tee vs Tee and I'm hooked to this damn site! Tee vs Tee is basically a site where several t-shirt designs compete against each other and people can vote for their favorite one. Could the goal be to find the one, the ultimate, the best t-shirt? Could even exist such a thing? Frankly I don't think so but that didn't stop me from voting for at least 30 minutes! If you're bored of the typical humorous/offensive/attitude t-shirts you have the choice to vote in the artsy and indie category. There's also the Leaderboard page where you can check out the rankings of all designs and in each separate category. Finally, there's a blog that fills you in regarding updates, corrections, upgrades and of course gives you the chance to chat and comment about the t-shirts. Tee vs Tee is a great source of t-shirts and a very pleasant way to pass your time... NICE!

Roman Apparel and The SOLD Project

The SOLD Project is an organization devoted to spreading awareness regarding child prostitution around the world. A team of 7 twenty somethings embarked on a trip to South East Asia to document this $10billion a year industry and find the causes of this tragic reality. You can watch the tailer here. Roman Apparel has partnered with this group to help raise money for the education of young orphans recently rescued from a life of sexual slavery in South East Asia. For this cause they've created this SOLD Project T-Shirt. The t-shirt costs $31 and half of the proceeds are going directly to the SOLD Project education fund. According to Will Roman (owner of the Roman Apparel) the design features "a beautiful watercolor design which evokes a feeling of childhood innocence". I'd say this is a very beautiful t-shirt no mater what, but if you can help these children by purchasing it, that's even better!

Akumu means nightmare in Japanese but these shirts from Akumu Ink are not a nightmare just yet. I accidentally, bumped into this little shop from Canada and I'm so digging their "Of Horror I" shirt. I actually think I'll add it to my collection of bloody designs! As I said, Akumu Ink is a little store based in Canada and is the creation of Joey and Dora who get their inspiration from movies, music, and their own imagination. They print on American Apparel Fine Jersey cotton t-shirts and they sell in very reasonable prices ($21.00). I'm looking forward to seeing more of these bloody designs of theirs...

One of last week's winning designs at DBH was "Family Tree " which is so crazy. I'm loving it. Among all the weird designs around, finally something original! I also liked today's winner, "Snakey Shaky Heart". Nice warm colors and so appropriate for Valentine's (I wouldn't expect anything less from DBH for this occasion).
