Any hint of Kalgoorlie or Canning being under threat seems to have been snuffed out by enthusiastic members of the WA punting public, and Liberal challenger Luke Simpkins has almost forced his way to the front in Cowan ($2.08). Similarly, the Liberals are almost into favouritism in Hasluck ($1.95), despite only a narrow victory there in 2004. The Coalition has taken a battering in eastern state seats, but WA may prove to be their salvation. If they can stem the tide in WA, and even pick up a couple of seats, they may limit the damage in the House and cling to power, said Mr Hobbs. Federal seat by seat betting in PortlandBet.com?s historic markets currently shows the Coalition with 76 seats, the ALP 72 with 2 independents.

76-72-2 Betting continues to drive markets towards Labor. The ALP has closed the gap in 26 seats across Australia, including a dozen in Queensland, leaving the Coalition with the slimmest of leads in PortlandBets 150-seat markets (76 of 150 seats). While Western Australia remains well disposed to the Coalition, with the Libs edging into favouritism in both Stirling and Swan, elsewhere it is all the ALP. Eden-Monaro and Lindsay have both swung to Labor favouritism in New South Wales. With Queenslands Moreton also joining the Labor fold, it seems only a matter of time before the weight of bets pushes the Coalition into outsiders in the betting.

Aside from the torrent of punters for the Libs ($2.05 into $1.40) in Greenway, the majority of betting has been for the Labor Party, seeing big moves in Chisholm ($1.50 into $1.30), Hindmarsh ($1.60 into $1.36) and Bonner ($1.74 to $1.55). The Coalitions 77 to 71 lead over Labor remains unchanged, as the Gain of Greenway was offset by the Loss of Macquarie to ALP favouritism (ALP $2.22 into $1.83).

Currently, the Coalition hold 21 of the 29 Queensland House of Representative seats with the ALP holding 6 and an independent, Bob Katter, holding the final seat. The ALP are predicted to pick up the Brisbane seat of Bonner, giving them 7 seats while the Coalition are favoured to win the newly predicted seat of Flynn. This would leave the Coalition with 21 Queensland seats. Independent Bob Katter will retain his seat.

The Coalition currently hold a firm majority of New South Wales House of Representative seats, possessing 27 to the 21 of the ALP. There are also two New South Wales independents- Tony Windsor and Peter Andren- in the House of Representatives. The seat of Gwydir, currently held by the National Party, has been abolished meaning that there will be one less New South Wales seat contested. The ALP are expected to pick up Greenway and could prevail in close tussles in Eden-Monaro and Lindsay, vacated by former Government Minister Jackie Kelly. The Coalition is favoured to claim the reconfigured seat of Calare, abandoned by the extremely popular local MP Peter Andren. If the ALP were to win one of either Eden-Monaro or Lindsay, the situation would be that the Coalition would have 25 New South Wales seats with the ALP having 23 and independent Tony Windsor the remaining.

The Coalition currently holds a big majority in terms of House of Representative seats going into the 2007 federal election, having 87 of the 150 seats on offer. The Australian Labor Party currently hold 60 seats with independent candidates holding 3. This is expected to change significantly, however, with the ALP projected to make a net gain of 11 seats with the Coalition expected to drop 10 seats and one less independent expected to be returned. Whilst the ALP are expected to make significant inroads into the Coalitions majority they are expected to fall four seats short of an absolute majority with the Coalition predicted to take 77 seats the ALP 71 seats and independents Bob Katter and Tony Windsor to be retuned.
