Bloglines Expands Embedded Video Support
2008-06-02 21:11:00
We've been spending a lot of time working on improving the back-end of Bloglines, but we wanted to share some fun for you Blogliners out there. More and more of our feeds have embedded video, so it was a no-brainer to offer greater video support. We've cleared over 30 different video sites to stream video through Bloglines. It's a broad list including Blip.tv, Break.com, Brightcove, Cnet, CNN, CollegeHumor.com, Dailymotion.com, Metacafe, Myspace, Revver, Video egg, and oh yeah, YouTube, among others. Here's an example where I'm about to watch Jake and Amir of College Humor. The video is embedded in the Silicon Alley Insider feed inside using the Vimeo player. Bloglines Beta Gets Search, Flickr View and Improved Add Page
2008-03-25 02:56:00
We've deployed all the features mentioned in the previous blog post. Here's a recap: Search Blog search is finally in Beta , and we've incorporated some popular Ask 3D features. For example, related searches are displayed in the right-hand column next to results. All of classic's features are still there, but with newer styling. Flickr View Selecting a Flickr feed and viewing it in quick view now uses the Flickr API to show images at their maximum resolution. Add Page Beta's old add page was spartan, to say the least. The new Add page has package tracking, weather feeds, and a new feature: Packs. You can now add popular categories of feeds with a single mouse click. Enjoy! - Eric Engleman and the Bloglines Team
Bloglines Beta Debuts Photo Widget
2008-01-17 02:30:00
We have another treat for you Blogliners who have been patiently awaiting our redesign. Today's special surprise is the Photo Widget View available within Bloglines Beta .We've been experimenting with different views in the Bloglines Start Page. In this case, we display photos from Flickr inside a Photo Widget. Sure beats a text description. We currently only do this for Flickr, but in future releases you will be able to apply the photo view for other photo-oriented feeds. Here's a little before and after. Before After As a reminder, you can go to Flickr or other photos sites and create a feed tracking a specific topic or tag. In the example above our topic we tracked was "Europe." Or you can track a specific user on the site. So in other words, anytime a friend posts a picture on Flickr, you would see that picture on your Bloglines. Have Fun! - Eric Engleman and the Bloglines Team

Bloglines Beta Launches Saved
2007-12-18 03:18:00
We've been busy working on Bloglines Beta to provide some stocking stuffers for everyone during this holiday season. Tonight we rolled out Saved. Later in the week, we'll talk about a couple of other features: Flickr Widget and Blog Preview. Just as it sounds, this features allows you to save a post for future reference. Many of our Blogliners are active filers who like to save their favorite posts. It's very easy. Let me walk you through the feature. You'll notice at the bottom of an article a new "Save" button located in-between "Pin" and "Email." Clicking on the "Save" button creates a new inline window where you can add a comment and save the post to a specific folder. To get to your saved articles, click on the "Saved" button in the left-hand corner of your screen. Simple! You might ask, "Why have "Pin" and "Save"?" Sometimes you want article "Pinned" in your reading flow so you're forced to look at it again to really absorb the complexity of the...
Bloglines Volunteers Wanted!
2007-11-16 01:30:00
Blogliners, we’re looking to meet you face-to-face for some quality time to discuss how you use a feed reader. We’re looking to meet people who are new to feeds and feed readers. We’ve met a lot of people over the past few months at conferences, the forums on the web, etc. And we love meeting our power users, but now we need to find some users who are new feeds and feed readers. Here are some key questions to determine if your right for our customer research: New to feeds and Bloglines in the past year. Consider yourself a non-techie. Willing to do some “homework” about 10 minutes a day for a few days. Have broadband. Live in the Bay Area - a must. Willing to meet with our researcher for 90 minutes during the week of 11/29 to 12/7. Modest compensation will be provided for you time. Since we know that Bloglines attracts a wide set of people, we want to get a good mix - all ages, home or work users. So we’ve created a short (5 minute) survey to he...

Bloglines Beta - Even Faster!
2007-11-09 01:16:00
Earlier this week, we released another round of improvements for Bloglines Beta : It's Faster Most people have commented on how fast the Bloglines Beta is, much faster than the classic site. However, a web site can never be too fast! Will, Bjorn and Ben have been reviewing the front-end code looking for ways to shave time off common actions. Hold onto your seats, you'll definitely feel the speed improvements especially in QuickView and 3-Pane View. We hope you relish the time saved not waiting to download. We are. Back-button Support Because sometimes in life, you do need to go backwards to go forwards. Now you can use the browser's back button like on standard web sites. Hitting the back button will take you to the previously loaded screen. Expandable Start Page Modules Some feeds just demand more space on your start page. Now you can change the size of the start page modules with a simple drag-and-expand of the...

Sew,Mama,Sew! on the Move
2007-11-08 00:00:00
Warning: This post might cause strong reactions. Please do not operate heavy machinery while reading. Sew, Mama , Sew! debuts this week in the Bloglines Top 1000, climbing 790 spots from last week to claim the title of Biggest Move r. It leapt over top feeds like USATODAY.com Travel - Top Stories and the Drudge Report. Other feeds on the move include Marc Andreessen's blog.pmarca.com, Design*Sponge, and MIT's Technology Review Feed. Coming in at 1000 and debuting for the first time is 1000 Confessions of a Pioneer Woman. It's a great example of a independent voice that has attracted a strong community. Pioneer Woman has great stories and sweet photos (we love the cinnamon rolls.) Why the Bloglines Top 1000? People ask us all the time about what Blogliners read. We've had the Bloglines Top 200 for the last couple of years, but wanted to highlight even more independent voices. We felt this was important because many have been lamenting the ...

2007-09-13 20:10:00

Here's an example of a part of my feed library so you can see what I read. The next set of release...

*Hiccup!* (excuse us)
2007-04-05 02:50:00
If you haven't noticed any problems with your Bloglines service over the last 2-3 days, you can stop reading here. For those of you who MAY have noticed a small hiccup or two, there's a simple reason for it: Some of the new services we rolled out last week have been restarting due to a small glitch in our network protocol. These hiccups rarely occur and last a very short amount of time--less than one second. Even so, we wanted you to know that we have tracked down the issue and fixed the problem. We're sorry about the inconvenience and will continue to monitor the situation. -The Bloglines Team
