6 Things You Didn?t Know About Clocks

1. Pierre Curie first observed that quartz crystals could produce stable vibrations-that is, could serve as clocks. 2. Levi Hutchins of New Hampshire made the very first mechanical alarm clock. 3. When clocks are advertised, they nearly always have their time set to 10:10. This is because it places the hands in an upward, almost “smiling” position ...

Silent Cuckoo Bunker Wall Clocks
2008-05-21 15:25:00
A solemn wall clock, making a depressing testament to the stark fear and horror of war. A silent cuckoo stands upon the bunker, an army helmet resting upon his head. In this silence, a hollow feeling is generated, to remind us of the loneliness of loss and struggle. The bunker itself is crafted from 111 individually assembled bricks. The surface of the piece has a jagged, irregular texture, that makes shadows seam sharper and more menacing. Against such a surface, the hands of the clock itself are almost lost, buried in the dense symbolism of the clock

Pin Clock
2008-05-21 15:03:00
I just think that this clock is so cool. I really used to like those push pin toys when I was younger, something about the way all of those pins pricked your skin when you pushed them in and out against your hand and face, it was just a really cool sensation. In this clock the push pins are moved automatically, with the motor shaping a new minute out of the pins every 60 seconds. According to the retailer the device makes a soft clicking sound, which I imagine might actually be rather soothing. Currently offered by Signals.com

Butterfly Wall Clocks
2008-05-21 14:14:00
This clock is awesome. Tiny red butterflies break free of the boundaries of time, to flutter merrily across the canvas wall. Totally unique, the butterflies can be moved and re-arranged to give the piece a fresh look in every season. I just like the message of freedom and joy that this piece conveys. Available from DesignShopUK.com

Timezone Clock
2008-05-21 14:02:00
This clock is kind of cool. It shows a world map with timezones, so that you can convert the time. I prefer the wall pieces with multiple clock faces, but that is just because I hate math. I suppose if I needed to know timezones, taking the time to do the conversions would keep me a little sharper than just being able to see multiple faces. I do however take exception with the colors. It looks like it is meant to be put in a hospital, where the doctors are all taking care of patients in different time zones. Even black would have been better, but why stop at black. They could have done a whole relief with vivid colors and textures Available at ShopModi

Hardwood Fern Clock
2008-05-21 13:49:00
I like the rustic feel of nature that is embodied in this clock. You can almost hear the twittering of birds and the sounds of woodland creatures rustling in the underbrush when you stare into the deep brown surface of this clock. Made from oiled sheesham wood, with intricately etched bronze leaves which point silently to the stark metal dowels. 11″ square, this piece can be used as a mantel clock, but also has mounting hardware so that you can install it on a wall. Being retailed at VivaTerra.com

Eclipse Wall Clocks
2008-05-21 13:29:00
A sleek, bold, almost stark piece, this clock would look great set against a dramatic wall color. Pure white, as shown here, works relatively well as it contrasts the deep black of the spreading spikes. 14.5″ X 14.5″ dimensions Available from Apt-Ny.com

8 Things You Never Knew About Clocks
2008-05-21 13:18:00
The hourglass, one early form of a clock, can still be found in use today in modern egg timers. These egg timers not only time how long it takes to boil an egg, but are filled with sand made from ground up eggshells, making their name doubly accurate! The National Institute of Standards and Technology boasts the world’s most accurate clock. NIST-F1 measures time by using an array of infrared lasers to count the vibrations of cesium atoms, which are then used to define the length of a second. This clock is so accurate that it would take over 60 million years of continued use for it to lose or gain a single second. On the clock Big Ben, the cast iron frame of the clock face was designed by AW Pugin. The Big Ben in London is actually the name of the Bell inside the tower and not the clock itself. Clocks ’ hands were designed to mimic the sundial, the way the shadows were cast on the sundial in the western hemisphere. Clocks turn clockwise because the shadow on sundials on t...

Are Disposable Drink Coasters Hurting The Environment?
2008-05-20 16:08:00
Disposable drink coasters, though often biodegradeable, are a symptom of a philisophical flaw in our culture. The idea that creating to consume and dispose can last is laughable, and can actually stunt our ability to innovate.
