Why blogging isn?t for everyone
2008-04-07 12:52:00
I have decided a few days ago that I won’t be blogging for much longer. Well, actually, I have ca. 150 blogposts on my blog, and I plan to bring it up to 500 (which will take about a year), and then quit pretty permanently, and maybe start writing again when I’m retired. By that ...

Two weeks with the new 2 GB iPod Shuffle
2008-04-02 21:46:00
A while ago, Apple refreshed its iPod shuffle line by adding a 2GB option and cutting the prices. At 55? (49$) for the 1 GB model, Shuffle is quite cheap. Yes, you can still get a 1 GB USB memory stick for one tenth of that price, but it won?t play music and isn?t an ...

The Wanna? announcement post: TechTour & Converteo404
2008-04-02 02:51:00
This post is aimed at helping friends bootstrap projects (although they certainly don’t need me to turn everything into gold, especially these ones). I apologize for the inconvenience caused to readers coming for content, not announcements, but these are 2 AMAZING projects that definitely deserve exposure. Unfortunately, a number of readers won’t be able to ...

The rumour was spreading fast and it is now official: Tech IT Easy’s just been acquired by California-based web startup news media TechCrunch for an undisclosed amount (7 figures is all I can say)! Creative Business In the Digital Era
2008-04-01 00:52:00
Unlike other Mondays? reputation, March 17th was a bright one in London. ?Post-reporting from the ?Creative Business in the Digital Era? seminar, in 01zero-one centre in Soho. The idea in the CBDE was to bring together people from different walks of the creative industry (music, cinema, publishing, photography?) whose common point is the zeros and the ones: ...

Auction 73 : Multi Play Multi Win
2008-03-22 05:20:00
Uf! My faith has been restored: we live in a civilized business world where everybody can be a winner, sky is the limit etc. More specifically, as far as the 700Mhz part of the sky is concerned, the breaking news are that there are no breaking news and no disruptive solutions: Winners US government has won ~ 20 billions of ...

Smartphone misconceptions
2008-03-21 09:20:00
Judging from Vincent?s latest post (and the comments!) about why he thinks Android will suck, there are many misunderstandings about global smartphone markets. First of all, they are a small subset of all handset market - just about 10%. There are many who are blinded by their US-centric power-user views. The echo chamber of blogs ...

Why Android will suck
2008-03-14 17:33:00
Hello again, Vincent here. Excuse me, I seem to be in a cranky mood lately, as far as technology goes, probably explaining my public rants towards the Facebooks and Scobles of this world. But I can’t let that stop me, here’s another one, aimed at Google ’s Android. Yesterday, Rich Miner, group manager for mobile platforms ...

Ghosts, the new benchmark for music distribution
2008-03-07 06:56:00
As some of you have read from the news, a couple of days ago Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails released their new album for free on the net. The first part of the four part Ghost I-IV was uploaded to the Pirate Bay and is also available from its website. Two days after the release, ...

Direct marketing value vs. referential marketing value
2008-03-06 14:43:00
Hello again, Vincent here. As some readers may know, I’ve both read and commented on Malcolm Gladwell’s Tipping Point, and found it an interesting book to think about the nature of communities and how certain individuals or groups of them are more influential in passing on ideas than others. That said, while I believe that such ...

5 reasons why business is going green
2008-03-04 10:55:00
Hello again, Vincent here. Let’s face it, even with nature knocking on our door, some accountant will still ask what this whole thing is going to cost. Science, facts, morality? it’s not enough. I compare it to smoking; even though everyone knows smoking kills, it took pressure?social, governmental, commercial?for people to quit. And the same applies ...

The role of the internet for the retail of *physical* goods.
2008-03-01 21:11:00
Hello there, Vincent here. One of the stories, I covered last week in my links on my blog, uncovered an interesting statistic. Only about 3% of retail sales in the US happens online. I don’t think these stats are at all coincidental. While I see a bright future ahead for the online retail of media-products, ...

South By Southwest 2008 rocks!
2008-02-26 10:51:00
Hey guys, Vincent here. Over the last few days, I’ve been enjoying the SXSW 2008 line-up of music?an annual tradition, where they release a torrent of free and legal (with some restrictions, I’m sure) independent music every year. It’s a sure way to discover bands that will make it big in a few months to ...

Episodic gaming, part two
2008-02-16 10:19:00
It?s time again for the weekend edition of Tech IT Easy. It was almost a year ago when I wrote about Sam & Max games in the context of episodic gaming and how episodic format combined with digital delivery might save some niche gaming genres, like point-and-click adventure games. I mentioned some other, at the time ...

Where I want mobile phones to (d)evolve towards
2008-02-14 21:51:00
Hey, Vincent here. I fell in love today, which is perfect timing, considering the date. Only it wasn’t a woman, it was a phone. Because my last phone suddenly broke, I was forced to quickly get another, and because I usually need to read about 10 websites before deciding, I bought the cheapest unlocked phone ...

Social networks a complex competitive advantage?
2008-02-11 19:22:00
Hi, Vincent here. You’ve probably been noticing that social networks are springing up in every nook and cranny all around the net. Fast Company is starting one (which I joined, just for fun), Anthony Robins is starting one, even food-companies are starting them (check my post on the somewhat unsexy Milner-cheese on my blog). The question of why is relatively simple to answer. Social networks are relatively cheap to operate (for certain types of companies), they do not require significant shifts of resources (for certain types of companies), and derive the majority of their content from user-generated content. The types of companies that benefit most from them are two-fold. For one, those that already produce content for a living will find it easy to add in social features. Those that do not, will likely be more suited for a partnership with a content-company, as that will not distract from their core-focus. Another, perhaps less apparent benefit is competitive advantage. Rela...

Getting hired by Amazon, Apple, ?, Yahoo, ZDnet: tips and future hacks.
2008-02-06 02:05:00
Trying to digest a cheesy crust pizza this noon, I was wondering if instead of a pizza I was carrying a baby. The good thing was that there would be two of us going back to work, even if the one was rather unqualified to give me hand. What a delight for my pizzababy to ...

The mystery of ?ambition? and how it correlates with success
2008-02-04 12:49:00
Hi, Vincent here. When we started our masters in entrepreneurship, so many years ago it seems, we were kindly informed that our chances of failure were pretty high?above 75% after 5 years, I believe. So that’s about on par with a career in Catalonian linguistics then? Nice! For my thesis, while it was not the primary ...

What does our logo & tagline say to you?
2008-02-02 23:51:00
It’s Saturday or Sunday depending on your time zone, so the chance is high that you’ve got more time to think hard for a few seconds  and write a valuable comment than during frantic week days. I badly need your feedback indeed. This post aims at getting crowd consulting on something that matters a lot to me: the ...

Developer to all-technical-staff ratio: 1:4 as a rule of thumb?
2008-01-30 01:43:00
Here’s a quick question to all people used to either interact with or being part of software development teams. Consider a software vendor, a good one, and its technical headcount. It is no secret that R&D teams aren’t made of software developers only. In order to be deployed successfully, architectures and code need to be tested by a QA department ...

Book review: The Assault on Reason by Al Gore
2008-01-28 18:38:00
I recently finished Al Gore’s latest book, The Assault on Reason, which takes a critical view of the current state of US democratic system and the systematic abuse against it by megacorporations, special interest groups and the system’s own executive branch. This book follows the same story of a good idea abused and turning against ...

Revisiting ITIL service catalogue
2008-01-23 11:27:00
I’ve seen a steady stream of visitors finding their way to my last year’s post about ITIL service catalogues. At one point I had to finally close the comments, because some people felt it was a correct place to advertise their solutions. Even after leaving the company I did the project for, I’ve been approached ...
