Indiana Jones vs. Iron Man
2008-06-01 22:40:00
We just spent a few days with friends in London - well, we actually weren’t in London the whole time, we also went to the Vegan Fayre in Bristol, which turned out to be a really nice event… Either way, part of the time we spent in London, we actually spent in the cinema. Friday night ...

Very Expensive Brick
2008-05-17 22:10:00
My 60 GB PLAYSTATION 3 just bricked. At least I assume it’s bricked, as it doesn’t produce any video, sound, nor does it recognize the controller. And just a few hours after Sony’s customer support shut down for the night… There’s so many stories on these here intartubes about the customer support of various companies that ...

Clay Shirky at Web 2.0 Expo SF 2008

Broken Toe Update
2008-05-13 13:12:00
Going briefly into my personal life again, it seems that the broken bone wasn’t quite as simple a case as I had assumed. At first, progress was astounding. The first week I couldn’t really walk around without crutches, but day by day I felt my ability to put weight on my foot returning. The second week ...

(The) Children of Men
2008-05-12 19:23:00
A few days ago, my wife and I saw Children of Men, a movie loosely based on P.D. James‘ novel The Children of Men . I’d read the book a few years ago, wasn’t terribly impressed with it, but wanted to give the movie a chance. As I’d forgotten a few of the finer points of the ...
Vegans are rare? I think not!
2008-04-30 21:16:00
I’ve often encountered the belief that while vegetarianism is a relatively wide-spread and well-understood concept, veganism is “out there”, and vegans are a rare lot. Truth be told, I used to believe that myself. When I flew to New York a while ago, the flight attendants informed me that the airline I was using did not ...

Broken Toe
2008-04-29 19:39:00
This is an update for those amongst my readers interested in some aspects of my life. I broke my toe, will now be walking on crutches for a while, and can expect to be fully healed in 4-6 weeks. Friday, 25/04/08, ca. 20:45 GMT: When I threw my opponent in Ju-Jutsu class, his foot swept across ...

A Matter of Principle
2008-04-29 08:43:00
So here’s a theory: to take any principled stance requires a certain amount of insanity. First, let’s head over to our favourite site for a definition of insanity: Traditionally, insanity or madness is the behaviour whereby a person flouts societal norms and becomes a danger to himself and others. Greek tragedies and Shakespeare often refer to madness ...

Tepid Cocoa
2008-04-25 10:00:00
I’ve not had a chance to dive into Mac OS X GUI programming until a few days ago, where I first came into contact with both Objective-C and Cocoa , Apple’s application API. My impressions of both are rather mixed; I like some things, I heartily dislike others. Altogether, the whole experience leaves something to be ...
Uncharted: Drake?s Fortune
2008-04-12 18:19:00
So I just finished Uncharted, a game by Naughty Dog. I’m not going to review it here in-depth, because Yahtzee has a far more entertaining review up at the escapist magazine. There are quite a few points where I disagree with Yathzee’s view, though. This is original content from un|we|sen, licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share ...

Perceived Security
2008-04-11 11:35:00
A few days after I published my impression that NYC seems like a safe place, Bruce Schneier blogs about a mother sending her child on a subway journey, arguing that it’s safe to do so. It’s probably the coincidence that prompts me to recommend that particular article on his blog, but it also ties in ...

Design Patterns III
2008-04-06 05:59:00
When I wrote yesterday that I recently had a conversation about design patterns, I skipped over that conversation’s contents, focussing instead on the result. Much of the talk centered around implementing design patterns using C++ template (meta-)programming, such that they are evaluated at compile-time rather than run-time. If that previous sentence didn’t mean much to you, ...

Design Patterns II
2008-04-05 06:41:00
Remember my previous post about design patterns? Me neither, I wasn’t even sure I’d written one. Anyhow, here’s a bit of a brain dump on them, a result of a conversation I had the other day. When discussing the merits of design patterns, I pretty quickly concluded that they were about 90% bullshit, and was ...

Everyday Shooter
2008-04-04 06:24:00
The other day I downloaded a bunch of game demos from PLAYSTATION1 Store, and while I was browsing their offerings, I came upon Everyday Shooter . Now I’ve read a few rave reviews about the game, and I’m usually distrustful of those, so it came as a bit of a surprise to me that the game is ...
Rapid Prototyping
2008-04-03 06:31:00
I recently came across an article on gamasutra.com about prototyping games in under seven days. It’s a highly interesting read, and also annoys the hell out of me. The reason for that is most likely because my engineering experience tells me some of the tips and tricks for rapid prototyping laid out in the article ...

New York Impressions
2008-04-02 06:58:00
So my employer sent me to New York for a few days. I didn’t have a huge amount of time or energy to go sightseeing, so that’s something I’ll have to do the next time I go. As a consequence, I only took a bare minimum of decent pictures of New York back with me. However, ...

Died in a Philosophizing Accident
2008-03-04 12:07:00
Or maybe not. Reports to that effect may have been exaggerated. There’s no real reason I picked the above title for this particular post, except that it may be fairly unique. I’m writing this post, because I’ve been subjected to both sides of an ugly situation, that occurs rather too frequently for my taste, which I ...

Still Alive
2008-02-01 06:03:00
Yes, we’re still alive! And look at me still talking when there’s science to do. Ok, ok, I’m jumping on the cake-is-a-lie bandwagon here. The point is, the line pretty much sums up our current state (or mine, at least): we’ve made the move to England, but there’s still too much to wrap up (putting up ...

Copyright, part II
2008-01-12 14:01:00
Seeing that Norman responded to my previous post about Copyright issues today, and seemed to have misinterpreted some of the more vague points in my article, I’ll write a followup. Note that Norman’s writing in German, so while I want to encourage you to read his blog (and buy his books), you might not follow ...

Copyright
2008-01-11 21:55:00
Reading on William Tully’s blog about Canadian copyright law changes in the making, I felt that maybe one of the discussions I had time and again with some friends1 might make for a good topic. It also ties in well with some of my recent posts here. Note that I make no claim that the opinions ...

Larry Lessig: How creativity is being strangled by the law
2008-01-08 06:32:00
I’m too lazy this morning to figure out how to embed the video directly, so why don’t you just head to this blog1 and watch Lawrence Lessig talk about copyright issues in our times? I’m used to hearing people discuss copyright issues, and patent issues, and anything that nowadays gets lumped together under the term ...

ShowClix 2.0
2008-01-07 20:22:00
I got a chance today to preview the new, international version of ShowClix, a search engine + social networking1 site for finding concerts near you (or wherever). Since live music is one of the things I enjoy, any tool that helps me find the shows I want to attend is welcome. I’ve decided to review ...

2007-10-31 20:15:00
This is just to inform you that I’m currently conducting some upgrades to the website software. If things don’t look as they should (odd right-hand side navigation, missing images), that’ll all be fixed soon enough. Thank you for your patience! Edit: Everything should work again as it previously did. If you find errors, please be so kind ...

Bladder Stones
2007-10-05 20:45:00
If you’re following my blog, you’ll notice that I don’t often write blog entries about what I did on a particular day. Today, I’ll make an exception. Today I took my guinea pig to the vets. You can see an older picture of her to the left. Having her stomach x-rayed a few weeks ago, because she wouldn’t touch food1, the vets found that she had two rather large bladder stones, which were taken out today. There’s a picture of them after the jump. (more…) Just a mild stomach upset. [↩]

Petition gegen Verjährungsfrist bei Sexueller Gewalt
2007-10-04 19:28:00
Note: this entry is in German, because it specifically concerns German laws. You can find a translation of this entry here.
