Free ringtone workaround is NOT Good
2007-09-08 11:59:00
Just thought we'd let the droves of paranoid upgraders know in on a small bit of good bad news. Yes, Apple did already release a new version of iTunes tonight, 7.4.1, and we tested to see if said update "fixes" the ringtone-renaming hack (if you really want to call it a hack) that lets users supply their own ringtones sans Apple's $0.99 fee. Breathe not so easy: it may be legal (probably), but the hack did not continue to work just fine for us. More below.Update: So yes, our previous ringtones carried over and we were able to add new renamed ringtones to iTunes -- but our readers are right in that 7.4.1 DOES block the renamed ringtone workaround moving forward. Our initial syncs went unblocked, but only until we tried to add new ringtone files. Once you actually attempt to sync new renamed ringtone files, well, then you're in for a heap o' pain (see above).

gets demonstrated on video, HP's iPAQ 610
2007-09-06 13:24:00
Those hoping to get to know HP's iPAQ 600 series a bit better can start celebrating, as the folks over at Notebooks were able to sit down with Raj Bhavani, an iPAQ product manager, and record a brief demonstration describing its features. Notably, the built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, HSDPA, click-wheel, three-megapixel camera, integrated GPS, and Windows Mobile 6 operating system were all highly praised, but the lackluster 320 x 240 resolution display looked to be a (critical) weak point. Nevertheless, the device does look pretty sharp (or maybe we're just suckers for all that connectivity), so be sure and click through for a look at the interview.

Motorola E6 can transform, make calls
2007-09-06 13:20:00
With what was likely an inspired bit of effort, some clever modder -- we really wish we knew who to credit but sadly don't -- has converted a MOTOROKR E6 into a working transformer. Unlike the Nokia branded Tran sfomer handsets we saw last week, this actually transforms and apparently somehow still functions as a phone -- though looking at it we'd guess just barely. While, we wouldn't haul this around with us as a day to day phone, we'd def put it up in a place of honor here at the Engadget Mobile Mansion. Hit the read link for a pile more shots.

The Apple iPhone
2007-09-01 05:59:00
looks like a thing of beauty. Widescreen touch interface, no buttons, runs OS X, useful widgets, integrated email, Google Maps, Google/Yahoo search, visual voicemail (see who voicemail is from before you call), SMS, Wifi, etc. etc. Oh, and it plays music.A lot of people are wondering just how big this thing is. Using the technical specs from apple.com, I grabbed some cardboard, scissors, and glue and made a scale model of the iPhone. Here it is:My hands aren't that big (I can barely palm a basketball on a good day), but it still seems to fit pretty well. How does it stack up against similar devices? Here's the iPhone vs. my current mobile phone, the Nokia 7610:iPhone vs. a 5G iPod:Thickness of the cardboard iPhone vs. the 5G iPod:1G iPod shuffle, 3G iPod, 5G iPod and the iPhone:iPhone vs. a TiVo remote and a Wii remote:That's all the gadgets I could find on a couple of hours notice.I also dug up something I wrote a couple of years ago in the gigantic text file I keep on my Powerbo...

Nokia N95 Review
2007-08-25 04:55:00
Revew By: The KingMy wife really needed a new phone so I gave her my Nokia N70 and got myself a new phone. Ok, lets call it a gadget or should I say device? Anyway compared to the N70 my new phone, a Nokia N95 has a lot of new features and cannot be called a phone only. It has a 5 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi (WLAN) and a lot of other nice features. Operating SystemThe Nokia N95 runs the latest version of the Symbian OS (S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1). Compared to previous versions or editions of the Symbian OS the updates are quite small - you get a new version of S60 web browser with some new features like improved RSS and Flash Lite support. Also support for more Bluetooth profiles (A2DP stereo audio profile). The UI (user interface) has some small changes too - a notification graphic over the icons of applications that are open. Overall feeling for me is a faster and more stable device than previous Nokias I used.N95 cameraThe camera has 5 megapixels, uses Carl Zeiss optics and ...

Nokia N75 music Symbian phone is fantastic but battery life is poor
2007-08-10 05:40:00
Nokia N75 music Symbian phone is fantastic but battery life is poorPersonally the Nokia N75 is a great phone for music; it does everything I want it to do. Many people love this phone but there are many that want to know more about it so this is what I shall do. This flip phone has style which is granted, it has functionality, and best of all it has everything you need to listen to your favourite tracks. My worries are that the battery life is pretty poor, not saying do not buy this phone because of that, after all there are plenty of mobile phones on the market with even worse battery life. All in all this is a great phone and well worth having.Nokia N75 main specifications –• UMTS / GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900• 2.4 Inch TFT display with 240 x 320 pixels, 16M colors• Second external 256K colors display 160 x 128 pixels• Downloadable themes• Vibration• 3D sound stereo speakers• MP3 & Polyphonic (64 channels) Ringtones• 40 MB shared memory• microSD (TransFlash) &am...

Nokia launches mobile social network - MOSH by Nokia!
2007-08-10 05:38:00
While all the big carriers are working hard to get existing social networks ported to play nice on their networks and handsets, Nokia seems to be taking a completely different approach. They’ve launched the first-ever social network launched by a handset maker - and who better to do it than the the most prolific mobile phone manufacturer on the planet? MOSH by Nokia aims to bridge the gap between the mobile and desktop social networking with their cross-platform design - upload, share, collect, or download various media from your mobile phone as well as your desktop (or laptop). You can upload all sorts of media to your MOSH account - audio, video, games, applications, documents, photos, basically anything you want to add to your profile. As you browse through other user’s accounts, you can “share” any interesting media with your friends (MOSH will send them a link to the file via SMS text or email), “collect” cool media (MOSH will bookmark the file for later viewing or d...

Fly Mobile SL600
2007-08-10 05:37:00
The Fly Mobile SL600 is a lightweight slider phone aimed very much at the value-for-money end of the market. Following on from the Fly Mobile SL500i, this new handset from Fly Mobile is available now in the UK for less than £60 from Woolworths, and it's also available in other regions for a similar sort of price. At first glance you'd be forgiven for thinking that the Fly Mobile SL600 was a Samsung slider - it wouldn't look out of place in their range and it does have some similar design elements, but crucially this is a distinctive design in its own right. At 81 grams, the SL600 is quite light, but it's still pretty well specified. The SL600 has 176x220 pixel TFT display in 262,000 colours, a two megapixel camera with flash and multishot capabilities, microSD expandable memory, multimedia playback capabilities including MP3, MP4, AAC, 3GP and WAV formats, an FM radio, Bluetooth and Java. Fly Mobile don't seem to have cut any significant corners with the design of the SL600.All...
Free map app for GPS-enabled phones - AmAze from LocatioNet
2007-08-08 18:39:00
IntoMobileWe hate getting lost on the road (especially when we have a GPS-phone by our side), and we love anything free. That’s why we love the new AmAze navigation software from Loca tioNet. It’ll keep us from getting lost and it’s free! This one goes out to our friends in the UK - LocatioNet is touting its AmAze software as being made specifically for UK highways and byways. Satellite images, map routing, weather forecasts, and even voice-prompts (if you’ve got the goods) it’s all there - as long as your GPS-equipped handset plays nice with J2ME apps. But, like they say, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. In exchange for a free-of-charge download, AmAze will be serving up some nice, targeted advertising based on your specific location. No need to pay to activate the premium navigation services on your GPS phone, that’s just wrong. If you want to give AmAze a whirl, head on over to www.amazegps.com and get your download on.

OSNews takes on the N95
2007-08-08 18:34:00
The GPS never worked, the camera isn’t going to replace a stand alone point and shoot anytime soon and the firmware is buggy. This is why I love Eugenia’s reviews, she always voices her complaints clearly and recommends solutions. Her answer: Wait for a few firmware upgrades. My answer: Wait for the next Nokia flagship. The N95 is clearly a first generation product.

Nokia N95 Firmware 12.0.013 Changelog leaked
2007-08-08 18:30:00
It pains me to have to say “changelog leaked.” Why can’t Nokia just be honest and admit that they shipped a phone that wasn’t perfect from the start, but they’re trying very hard to correct that. Nokia is one of the few companies who even do firmware upgrades! If you tell someone to update to the latest firmware or bios or version of software, they will always ask what is new? Did they fix anything? A simple changelog like the one Symbian Freak just posted makes a world of a difference in communicating to users what exactly Nokia worked on and why you should update your device first thing after reading this article. A few things to note: HSDPA indicator added (remember when I posted the screenshot that had 3.5G in the top left corner?) AGPS enabled (preview of the technology thanks to Symbian Guru) Problems with the WiFi connecting to Netgear routers now fixed Better memory handling in the music player application “Lots of improvements with maps.”

LG Shine x Andy Lau Special Edition phone
2007-08-08 18:29:00
LG Electronics has launched the new special edition version of its Shine phone designed in the partnership with famous Chinese actor Andy Lau. The Shine x Andy Lau Special Edition phone comes complete with the actor’s own handwriting inscribed motto on the back of the phone which says “Heaven is where the kind hearted people are.”Those not familiar — myself included — should know that Andy Lau Tak-Wah is the 46 year old movie actor and producer, who has appeared in more than 100 films. Obviously, LG is aiming to appeal to the Andy Lau’s huge fan base throughout Asia, although I find Shine appealing even without his calligraphy.

Nokia Exits Chip Development, Outsources Modem Technology
2007-08-08 18:09:00
Nokia today announced plans to outsource development of third-generation (3G) chips to STMicroelectronics and license out its modem technology, widening its supplier base and opening up the market. The world's top cell phone maker said STMicro would design and build 3G chips based on Nokia technologies for Nokia and other customers, freeing up research and development resources for other areas. Nokia will continue to develop its leading modem technology, which includes protocol software and related digital design for WCDMA/GSM and its evolution. Nokia will then license this modem technology to its chipset manufacturers, who will use it in the chipsets they develop and produce for Nokia and - if they so decide - in the chipsets they produce for the open market. This licensing and multisourcing strategy will allow Nokia to broaden its pool of chipset suppliers and leverage external innovation to support its wide range of products. It will also allow Nokia to focus on its core compet...
