iPhone Dev Team delays release of iPhone PWNED
2008-04-01 01:07:00
I'm one of the iPhone users from the world that are really looking forward to the iPhone 2.0 software release (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/iphon eroadmap/). The update will be available in June (http://gizmodo.com/364788/iphone-20-upda te-available-for-free-in-june-touch-users -get-to-pay-up-again), but the iPhone Dev Team (http://wikee.iphwn.org/) already got their hands on this fine piece of software. Better yet: They hacked it to let it run 3rd party application. And the best: It will be released this week. A downside: It was going to be released on the 30th of March, but it had a couple of delays. They're improving the script & making a Windows version of the application.

Download movies from YouTube and other streaming media websites
2008-03-30 19:05:00
Did you ever came across movies / films on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/), Google Video (http://video.google.com/), MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/) or Break (http://break.com/) that you wanted to store on your local machine? You can have several reasons for this; Being afraid that the movie / film will get deleted by the host or user, placing the file on your iPhone or an other mobile video player and so on. Of course you can dig through the source code finding the source files, but that's a lot of time-consuming work. Here's a list of services that'll allow you to download any streaming video file from popular websites. The list is placed in random order and feel free to place any services not listed here in the comments, or which one you liked the most. Of course these services can be used for free.

Show your feedcount the way you want
2008-03-22 18:58:00
Feedburner (http://www.feedburner.com/) is a great tool / website to manage and control your RSS feed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS). I've already written an article before on how you can promote your feed to the max using a signature (http://www.marcofolio.net/how_to/promoti ng_your_feed_to_the_max_using_a_signature .html). Today, I'm going to show you how you can show-off the number of feed readers subscribed to your feed in your own, beautiful way. Many bloggers use the FeedCount from Feedburner to show how many readers are subscribed to their blog. I'm pretty sure you'll have seen the following image around the net (several times): Feedburner (http://www.feedburner.com/) and a webhost that supports PHP (http://www.php.net/) and GD (http://www.php.net/gd).

Marcofolio.net goes v1.5
2008-03-21 14:31:00
Hi! I passed the "600 (stable) feed readers (http://feeds.feedburner.com/marcofolio)" border last week, so I decided to give my beloved visitors an update of the website. I changed a couple of things to improve the site. One of the things you probably noticed already, is the different kind of lay-out. Here is a list of the changes made on Marcofolio.net. Feel free to give me some feedback about the changes. If you found some bugs, please leave a comment or contact (contact.html) me.
Baby car logos
2008-03-19 20:00:00
Everyone started out small. When you were born, you looked totally different than how you look now. This doesn't only count for humans, but (apparently) for cars too. Do you recognize this little fellow? Just look how much he has changed! And he even had more friends to play with.

Check where visitors came from & give them a message
2008-03-17 21:02:00
Recently, I was stumbling (http://ionox.stumbleupon.com/) over the net and came across an article showing me the following message: Hello StumbleUpon user! If you like this article, consider to give it a thumbs up. It was as if the website knew where I came from. I wanted to know to code behind this. I did some research and found out how you can find the referring website with a PHP variable. The mfReferral Joomla! module (http://www.marcofolio.net/joomla/mfrefer ral_give_your_visitors_a_personal_message .html) uses this technique too. Check where your visitors came from & give them a nice, personal message. This way, you'll have a more interactive & personal site. By doing this, you can kindly ask your visitors to do something, like give you a digg when they came from Digg.com. Ask them if they found what they were looking for, if they came from Google. Here is a "clean" version of the script, that you can use on any PHP based website. Just set your variables in the top of the scri...

Dropbox: SVN for the regular folks
2008-03-14 17:38:00
Subversion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subversion_ (software)) is used to maintain current and historical versions of files such as source code, web pages, and documentation. When I'm working with a project team at school, we're working with Tortoise SVN (http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/). This SVN application is very useful to share files & folders in a Windows shell. If another team member screws up your source code, you can easily revert to a previous version. It really looks like the Time Machine on Mac OSX (http://www.apple.com/nl/macosx/features/ timemachine.html). The only downside to this, is that SVN can be pretty hard setting up. You'll need to have knowledge about SSH (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Shel l) and understand UNIX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix). Most people don't have this knowledge and that's where Dropbox kicks in. Simply drag your files to your shared folder on your computer and everyone who you invite will be able to share the files. Graffiti art to boost your inspiration
2008-03-12 22:22:00
Graffiti (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graffiti) (or spray paint) often regarded by others as unsightly damage or unwanted vandalism. But some times, the boring wall is supplied with a true piece of graffiti art, making it a joy for the eyes. A new game from Atari, Getting Up (http://www.atari.com/gettingup/), is based on tagging. I made a collection of pictures showing these fine spray paint creations. By looking at them and studying the details, you could boost your (Photoshop) design inspiration. If you're not in to design, just sit back and enjoy this amazing form of art. Please take note that I'm not showing any graffiti tags (http://flickr.com/photos/dbuc/109339740/ ) or space spray paint (http://flickr.com/photos/clintjcl/420732 291/) in this article. Those can be pretty inspiring too.

Phun: Fun with physics
2008-03-08 11:49:00
iPhone (http://www.marcofolio.net/webdesign/add_ a_webclip_icon_for_easy_iphone_access.htm l) users will probaly know the app iPhysics (http://www.installerapps.com/2007/12/05/ iphysics/). Computer games will know the games The Incredible Machine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Incredi ble_Machine) and Line Rider (http://linerider.com/play-line-rider-onl ine). But what if you combine the power of those games in one? Than you'd have Phun (http://phun.cs.umu.se/wiki/Phun). The falling sand game (http://chir.ag/stuff/sand/), that uses Java, does come pretty close to Phun. Gravity and different materials makes these so interesting and fun.
15 stunning motion typography videos
2008-03-05 13:18:00
Motion typography (or kinetic typography) refers to the art and technique of expression with animated text. Expressing yourself through animated words with graphics can be really convincing and cool to see. Flying, floating, growing, expanding, turning characters is what you'll see in the next minutes. I've selected 15 very nice motion typography movies. Some are more breathtaking than others, but they're all outstanding. They all know how to use typography very well and it'll be a joy for your eyes, although some will be really fast. You can get a massive design inspiration kick just by watching these videos. I wouldn't mind if real film starters or music videos in the future will be like this. If you want to create such a movie on your own, you can try Adobe After Effects (http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffec ts/) or SWiSH Max (http://www.swishzone.com/index.php?area= products&product=max).

mfBlank: External link recognition with icon suffix
2008-03-02 23:17:00
If you have a website, one of the main things you want to do is keeping your users to stay. That's why, when you link to an external website, most people will add the attribute target="_blank" (new window) to the link. This method can be pretty time consuming, especially when you're not using a WYSIWYG editor. For more user friendly links, you could also add a suffix icon to show a new window will open. mfBlank does all this work for you! It recognizes outgoing links and adds the target="_blank" and an icon automatically. This way, you'll make sure to keep your visitors on your site. The script is very small, but can be really useful for your website. Are you tired of placing the target=_"blank" attribute to all links on your Joomla! website? mfBlank is your solution and it automatically adds a suffix icon to external links. mfBlank Download mfBlank for Joomla! 1.5 Download

Add a webclip icon for easy iPhone access
2008-02-29 17:49:00
Today, I got my own iPhone. Big thanks to my girlfriend who knew someone that had a spare. Now you might think: "Why does he get one from someone else instead of buying one in the shops"? There's a very simple reason for that: The iPhone isn't released in Europe (yet). The iPhone, like many other smart phones, can connect with the internet. What if you want the user to have a nice, fancy button for easy & fast access to your website? This is where the Webclip kicks in. Remember my tutorial on how to create a favicon for your website (http://www.marcofolio.net/webdesign/how_ to_create_a_favicon_for_your_website.html )? A webclip is like a favicon for the iPhone & iPod touch and it'll look very professional.

Adam's Apple
2008-02-19 09:37:00
Who doesn't know the story about God, Adam and Eve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_and_Ev e) and the Forbidden Fruit, the Apple (http://www.apple.com/)? Wait, why is the word Apple linked to the website of the company that created the iPod, the iPhone, the iMac, the macBook etc.? This is because here is a modern version of the story of Adam and Eve. Read it, and you'll understand. The story is pretty funny and has a nice rhyme, but can be a little bit lsfw (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.ph p?term=LSFW). By the way, the "Forbidden Fruit" became considered a form of apple, because of a misunderstanding of the Latin "malum", where malum as an adjective means evil, but as a noun means apple.
