Proxy sites to browse the net anonymously - Reloaded
2008-02-08 11:27:00
Regular readers (http://feeds.feedburner.com/marcofolio) of my website know that I've written an article before listing 20 proxy websites (http://www.marcofolio.net/tools/20_proxy _sites_to_browse_the_net_anonymously.html ). There were a lot of comments in that article complaining about proxies that didn't unblock MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/), Hi5 (http://www.hi5.com/), Bebo (http://www.bebo.com/) or other websites from school or work. Because of this, I decided to give it a second go. Here is a huge list of proxy websites that you can use to access MySpace or Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/) from where ever you like. If it still doesn't work, a proxy just doesn't do it for you. You'll have to live with the fact that you can't access your favorite sites from the place you are.

Joran van der Sloot - "I know what you did last summer"
2008-02-07 11:45:00
Joran van der Sloot. A huge media hype (http://joranvandersloot.blogspot.com/) in the USA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Stat es), Aruba (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aruba) and here, in The Netherlands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands ). Why? All because of the death of Natalee Holloway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natalee_Hol loway). If you still don't know what I'm talking about, consider reading the complete story (http://www.peterrdevries.com/complete-st ory.htm) or try to follow the news more often. Because of the new developments (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natalee_Hol loway#January-February_2008:_New_developm ents), the story is a hot topic these days. The confession of Joran (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAtHZ-uDg 5U), taped by crime reporter Peter R. de Vries (http://www.peterrdevries.com/) with a hidden camera, has put everyone in shock. Especially the mother of Natalee is stunned (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYjZwop0Y 94) of the cruelty of Joran (http://...

12 reasons why I hit the "Show next page" button directly
2008-02-04 18:06:00
Social bookmarking websites (http://www.marcofolio.net/reviews/love_f rom_social_bookmarking_sites.html) are great. They help you spread the word of your blog, website or article and you can discover new ones. Personally, I like StumbleUpon (http://ionox.stumbleupon.com/) the best. I like to stumble over the net, giving away many "Thumb up". However, there are always websites that I come across when stumbling, that I just have to give a "thumbs down (http://ionox.stumbleupon.com/bads/)", or just directly navigate away from. Why? I have 12 reasons why I hit the "Show next page" button directly. Leaving out the 404 error pages (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/404_error) and servers being down, here are the reasons I press the "Show next page" button in random order. Remember these tips and don't make these mistakes on your own website. These tips are not only for users from StumbleUpon, but for all websites.

Promoting your feed to the max using a signature
2008-01-31 13:28:00
As a blogger, the main thing that you probably want is having many RSS feed readers (http://feeds.feedburner.com/marcofolio). Remember the 22 steps you must do after setting up a blog (http://www.marcofolio.net/tips/22_steps_ you_must_do_after_setting_up_a_blog.html) ? One of the tips in that article was: If you're a member of any forum, place the URL to your blog in your signature and reply to threads. Here is a nice little trick to optimize that signature, showing off your RSS feed. Attract more readers to your website and help spread the world. This technique uses the help from Feed burner (http://www.feedburner.com).

How Evolution Happens - CG Video
2008-01-27 22:31:00
As a designer, I really love CG (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_gr aphics). Especially the 3d stills (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay .php?f=132&daysprune=-1&order=desc&sort=v oteavg) really take my breath away. But what always amazes me, is the beautiful CG used in movies. Here is a short movie full of CG showing the evolution of planet earth. Watch evolution unfold before you in this amazing video featuring fish, amphibians, reptiles, dinosaurs, mammals, and primates. Even if you don't believe in the evolution, just sit back and enjoy the beautiful CG and music in this video.

This one goes out to all the new parents out there. Just a little guide on how to (and not to) take care of a baby. Very funny to read, but must be taken very seriously. You could print the images and bundle them to a little book that you could hold in your pocket just to be sure.

2008-01-23 23:00:00
Two great (web)design websites, Dezinerfolio.com (http://www.dezinerfolio.com/) and Marcofolio.net (http://www.marcofolio.net/), decided to team up to bring you something beautiful. The original dfTheme 2.0 (http://www.dezinerfolio.com/2007/06/21/d ftheme20/) made by Dezinerfolio was first released for Wordpress. After a while, they decided to make the theme for Drupal (http://www.dezinerfolio.com/2007/10/23/d ftheme-20-for-drupal/). Jackbook.com released it later for blogger (http://www.jackbook.com/2007/10/dark-blo gger-template.html). Now, Marcofolio.net brings you this beautiful dark web 2.0 theme to Joomla ! 1.0.x (http://joomla.org/). This template called Whitesquid (Named after the demo website of the Drupal version of dfTheme 2.0) will really amaze your visitors. Of course this template can be downloaded and used for free. And don't you want to download the full album through torrents (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_ %28protocol%29) since you only want that one single or song? Those loops are created on a computer, but here are 5 very cool interfaces that allows you to create your own music loop. PHP Random Image Rotation
2008-01-15 20:23:00
Want some randomness on your website? Try out this PHP image rotator. This script will display a random image every time the user re-loads the page or starts navigating. A very nice effect that can help you make your website a little bit more interactive. This script can be perfectly used for a banner of header on your website. You can also use this in your signature or avatar on a forum. Additionally, you can rotate HTML and CSS files. Just make sure this script is placed on a PHP server, otherwise it will not work.

Top 5 worst forms of online advertisement
2008-01-09 16:21:00
Since the beginning of this blog there were a lot of visitors (http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffi c_details/marcofolio.net) and my website kept on growing. Because of that, several advertising websites (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online _adve rtisement) contacted me if I was willing to put their clients ads on my website. I rejected them because they weren't in the best interest of my readers, which is very important for me. I did some research and created a top 5 worst forms of online advertisement that will surely keep your visitors away. This list is created from the users point of view. I think that if you add the number 1 on this list to your website, you'll probably receive more money. So it's up to you: Do you want more visitors and a high-quality website or do you want to fill up your website with loads of ads, keeping your visitors away? Let me start that I wont put the Pop-up advertisement in this article. Those are old and most people now have a pop-up blocker or...

Use a custom font on your website
2008-01-07 16:51:00
Webdesigners always have to make sure that they use a common font (http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/Windo wsMacFont s.html) for their website, otherwise it'll display incorrect on browser that don't have the font installed. This can be really annoying if you want to use a nice custom font (http://www.marcofolio.net/photoshop/ulti mate_photoshop_design_resources.html#Font s). You could load the font in Photoshop and save it as an image, but this isn't dynamic and is not SEO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engi ne_optimization). Here are two solutions on how to make dynamic custom fonts. This is a dynamic custom font Using image replacement And is SEO proof The font used above is called Diavlo (http://www.josbuivenga.demon.nl/diavlo.h tml) and uses PHP Image Replacement. The other technique that you can use is sIFR. These can very good be used as attractive blog titles.

33 favorite Marcofolio.net articles from 2007

I started this blog in June of this year with the article about how to create a custom page title in Joomla! 1.0.x (http://www.marcofolio.net/how_to/create_ a_custom_page_title_in_joomla_1.0.x.html) . After a couple of articles, I took a brake while on vacation. But when I returned, I started writing articles in August again. This blog now has almost 100 articles, around 400 feed subscribers (http://feeds.feedburner.com/marcofolio) and over 1000 comments. I think this is pretty good for someone that hasn't had a blog before, didn't know anything about SEO or Social Bookmarking. I just wanted to share my knowledge, fun and interesting things with the world. I created an alphabetic list of my own favorite articles from 2007. I'm checking these articles often because of the interesting resources or just for fun. Which article of mine did you like the most or through which article did you get here? Of course you can expect more high-quality, interesting and fun articles from me in 200...

Syobon: Most frustrating game ever
2007-12-30 12:30:00
Here's a nice little time-killer for you. The image you see below is a screenshot from Syobon, a Japanese Mario-look-a-like game. Doesn't look very interesting, does it? But I'm sure, that if you're going to play this game, you'll get pretty frustrated some times. But it'll be funny too, especially when you let others play. The video below will explain more. I wasted over 200 lives in this game, but couldn't get passed chicken in the castle level when you have the sword.
