How to Run for Office for Free with Web 2.0
2007-03-13 03:53:00
I was on some news program a few weeks ago talking about Barack Obama’s YouTube videos and Hillary’s online live chats, and at the end of the segment I said that the Internet empowers Regular-Joe candidates by giving them free access to a huge chunk of potential voters. The thing is, Obama and Hillary ...

Is GOOGLE,Inc affiliated with ukrainian dating site?
2007-02-23 13:49:01
Though GOOGLE corporation is a huge international company, with powerful lawyers and possibilites to sue practically to any individual or organisation in the world (recent cases wigh GMAIL.DE, GMAIL.RU GMAIL.PL domains can prove that), still the exist some individuals who succeed in earning some money with Google trademark domains. For example, I was very surprised when I saw that GOOGLE.UA (Ukrainian ccTLD) is redirecting to some third party dating site. HTML code reveals META-REFRESH redirect of GOOGLE.ua Ukrainian version of GOOGLE is available under domain COM.UA from 2001. GOOGLE.COM.UA (COM.UA is much more popular among other ukrainian TLDs) was registered by one of the ukrainian domain registrars, in order that domain not fall in hands of cybersquatters, and then transferred to GOOGLE, Inc for free. With .UA TLD situation is much more difficult. While it costs 60$ fee per year for a domain name itself (COM.UA costs 7$ per year), in order to register .UA domain, one should h...

Alarm bells ringing over domain registrar, RegisterFly.com
2007-02-23 13:49:01
Malaysia Sun Monday 19th February, 2007 (Big News Network.com): Up to two million domain names, including many with associated Web sites, are at risk over the apparent failure of ICANN-accredited domain registrar, RegisterFly.com. The company in recent weeks is reportedly almost dysfunctional as customers scramble to register, renew or transfer names. RegisterFly.com’s support systems appear to be down, or completely overwhelmed. It appears all domain names with the registrar are locked, preventing clients transferring, or even updating them. Attempts to change the status of domains are being overridden by the registrar. Registrars are required to provide owners with authorization codes which are required in transferring to other registrars. These are normally displayed in clients’ accounts, which are accessed by private login and password codes. It appears however RegisterFly.com has stopped displaying the codes. Calls to the various telephone numbers nominated for sale...

Canada, Mexico, Israel Join China, Russia as Countries Plagued by Piracy
2007-02-23 13:49:01
16 countries recommended for U.S. government watchdogs against digital piracy The International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA), a coalition representing copyright-based industries such as the MPAA, RIAA, BSA and the ESA, submitted its recommendations to the Bush administration its ?Special 301? review of copyright piracy and market access problems around the world. As they have in past years, China and Russia remain key problem countries, but most surprising to some are the new additions the coalition is targeting for 2007. IIPA recommends that an additional 14 countries be placed on the ?Priority Watch List,? joining China and Russia for a total of 16 countries. ?Many of the key markets around the world that are infected with high levels of copyright piracy or deny effective market access to copyright industries,? said Eric H. Smith of the IIPA. ?The unwillingness of the countries identified in our submission to curb high rates of piracy ? in most countries, through more eff...

MIT Student Invents Rapid Wall Climbing Rope
2007-02-23 13:49:01
Scaling tall buildings with a single click The ability to scale tall buildings with a small handheld device used to be the stuff of Batman?s wonderful toys. Nathan Ball, a 23-year-old graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has invented a device that makes the fantasy a reality. With the help of Ball?s ATLAS Powered Rope Ascender, a fully loaded firefighter could reach the top of a 30-story building in only 30 seconds, compared to the six minutes or more it often takes to trudge up stairs with 80 to 100 pounds of equipment. The device, which is the size of a hand-held power tool, can lift a 250-pound load more than 600 feet into the air at nearly 10 feet per second, all on a single battery charge. Through a combination of resourcefulness and ?the highest-tech equipment we could afford,? such as drill batteries and a few high-power density motors, Ball and his colleagues invented a device that could hoist 250 pounds of weight 50 feet into the air in seven seco...

Gamblers bank on online gambling
2007-02-15 19:46:01
Online gambling giant 888.com has reported record growth, with 3.6 million members now betting online. The website reported a 35 per cent increase in real money memberships in its final quarter results for 2006 despite the operator having to exit its operations in the United States because of regulation changes. Changes in legislation limited online gambling companies from being able to accept electronic payment methods, such as credit cards, for members to use its casino and poker games. The company’s non-US business reported a net gaming revenue of $157 million (£78 million) in 2006, 28 per cent above revenue in 2005. Its net gaming revenue for all business, including the US, were up seven per cent in the same period. Helping its non-US operations were the release of new online casino in Spanish and German languages, and a new sports betting licence issued in Italy in December. The increase in revenue for 888 has continued into the start of 2007, with revenue set to rise eve...

Inside the World of Poker
2007-02-15 19:46:01
But first, what about Doyle? First, I will answer the question I received from people in the poker industry this week regarding Doyle Brunson. No, he did not get arrested. When I spoke with him this morning, he laughed and told me that these types of rumors fly about every year. Usually the rumor says he was taken out of a poker game in handcuffs for cheating! Now that?s hilarious because he could beat a table even if all the other guys were cheating! Next, let?s talk about what?s going on in the world of poker. Although the first online site opened its virtual doors about 12 years ago, there has been very little governmental intervention for most of that time. A few years ago the government issued subpoenas to some media companies without much follow-up. Recently, the government is taking a more proactive role, fumbling around trying to figure out a way to slow down the billion-dollar online gaming industry. It has been incorrectly reported that the NETELLER arrests were the result...

Google Accused of Helping Pirates
2007-02-15 19:46:01
Film studios are going after Google for its alleged aid in film piracy Google is coming under fire from big media studios who are accusing the search giant of aiding in film piracy. Setting this headline apart, however, is that the complaints aren?t over YouTube, but rather Google?s advertising. The Wall Street Journal reports that Brandon Drury and Luke Sample?who ran EasyDownloadCenter.com and TheDownloadPlace.com and are currently being sued by several Hollywood studios?got significant support from Google advertising. The two men said in sworn statements that Google offered them credit as an easy start to advertise on Google’s search engine, and that the search company also suggested ad keywords such as “bootleg movie download,” “pirated,” and “download harry potter movie.” According to the report, Google received $809,000 for its advertisements. News of this has sent many media companies, including News Corp., Viacom, Sony, NBC Universal...

World?s First Commercial Quantum Computer Demonstrated
2007-02-15 19:46:01
Canadian company D-Wave shows off technology that promises to give quantum computing capabilities to mainstream industry Canadian firm D-Wave Systems unveiled and demonstrated today what it calls ?the world’s first commercially viable quantum computer.? Comp any officials announced the technology at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California in a demonstration intended to show how the machine can run commercial applications and is better suited to the types of problems that have stymied conventional (digital) computers. The demonstration of the technology was held at the Computer History Museum, but the actual hardware remained in Burnaby, BC where it was being chilled down to 5 millikelvin, or minus 273.145 degrees Celsius (colder than interstellar space), with liquid helium. Quantum computers rely on quantum mechanics, the rules that underlie the behavior of all matter and energy, to accelerate computation. It has been known for some time that once some simple f...

Hooray for Blu-ray, it?s looking like a winner
2007-02-15 19:46:01
Product delays and lacklustre movie studio support could spell doom for the HD DVD disc format, which is struggling to gain a foothold in the Australian market as rival Blu-ray continues to extend its lead. Not only has the Blu-ray camp managed to secure the exclusive support of five of the eight major movie studios (two of the remaining three studios support both formats), it has also succeeded in being the first to market with stand-alone players, and enjoys wider support from retailers. These will be crucial factors in determining which format eventually takes over from the ageing DVD standard, as picture quality differences between the two are virtually indiscernible. Retailer support is seen by many in the industry as particularly critical, as the advantages the high-definition formats offer over standard-definition DVDs are most effectively demonstrated through in-store demos. JB Hi-Fi, described by its marketing director Scott Browning as the “largest true home entertai...

Was that a Vista fix released on Patch Tuesday?
2007-02-15 19:46:01
It depends on just what you mean by ‘Vista ’ February 14, 2007 (Computerworld) — Users can chalk up a critical vulnerability — now patched — in Windows Vista, a Microsoft security manager said today. Though if people want to get picky, the fix for the company’s malware scanning engine isn’t really for a flaw in the operating system’s core code. And therein lies a debate. The question of whether Vista was patched against its first remote code vulnerability may be academic in the long run, but researchers and customers alike are keeping close tabs on the operating system for the first confirmed vulnerability. Microsoft has repeatedly touted Vista as its most secure version of Windows ever. Yesterday, it released 12 security updates to fix 20 vulnerabilities, 11 of them pegged as “critical” in the company’s four-step scoring system. One of the bulletins, MS07-010, patched a critical bug in the malware scanning engine used...

Belgium Court Rules Against Google in Copyright Infringement Case
2007-02-15 19:46:01
Google continues receiving flak over text copyright As Google continues its project on reproducing the world’s printed material into a searchable digital format, the search giant also continues to face discontentment from a number of news print organizations. This week, a Belgian court ruled that Google may not reproduce material from a number of news papers in the country. Copiepresse, the organization that manages copyrights for Belgium ’s French and German language newspapers said that Google’s online text search is making material that is for paid subscribers fully viewable to the public. Many news organizations that publish their work online tend to make those articles paid-only after a certain time period of being free. Google faced a ruling last year in Europe that proposed a $1.3 million USD per day fine for reproducing articles online without prior consent. This week’s court ruling reduced that fine to a small $32,000 per day fine but representatives ...

Nintendo?s Wii Widens Lead Over Sony PlayStation 3 In Japan
2007-02-08 07:44:02
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Tokyo, Japan (AHN) - Sales of Nintendo ’s video game console, Wii , continue to out pace that of their larger rival Sony and it’s Play Station 3 (PS3). Last month, the Wii was outselling the PS3 by a 2-to-1 ratio, yet new data from tech tracking company Media Create finds the Wii has extended its lead to 4-to-1. Both countries are based in Japan, and dominance in the Japanese video game market has long been seen as a badge of pride within the gaming community. In the last week of January, the Wii sold 83,754 consoles against the PS3’s sales of a mere 19,996 units. Nindento’s portable game console, the DS Lite beat both units, selling 194,526; Sony’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) sold more units than the PS3, at 35,700 consoles, but remains far behind Nintendo’s contender. According to GameSpot UK, the release of the figures has renewed rumors that the PS3 will soon be getting a price cut. Last week Sony ...

The death trap for outsourcing? the wage hyperinflation in India
2007-02-08 07:44:02
The salaries in India are rising rapidly as there is a shortage of qualified people in India. Asian workers are expected to enjoy the highest pay hikes in the world in 2007, because of robust economic growth, talent shortage. India lines up in the top. Real wage increases, which represent workers'’ annual salary rises after taking inflation into account, are expected to climb an average 3.6 per cent in Asia this year, a 50 per cent jump from 2.4 per cent in 2006, according to a survey by human resources firm ECA International. American firms are already reporting lower quality of output due to shortage of talent in India. The IT sector has started subcontracting its work from USA to further lower quality regions of the world without letting the client know anything about it. The reason for such wage inflation comes from not only demand supply situation. Yong Indian youth these days realize working in the outsourcing industry is not going to give them a permanent career. Microsoft?s own antivirus fails to secure Vista
2007-02-08 07:44:02
Microsoft’s own antivirus software, Live OneCare, is unable to fully protect Vista users against viruses, and one of security firm McAfee’s antivirus software packages also fails to protect users, according to independent research released Friday. Security news Web site Virus Bulletin, backed by a team of security researchers based in Oxfordshire, U.K., tested 15 antivirus software packages used by businesses and designed specifically for Vista, Microsoft’s newest operating system. The packages were released to businesses two months ago. The researchers tested whether each of the antivirus products would stop a set of viruses known to be currently circulating. In order to be awarded a pass, the software had to detect all the viruses with no false positives. But out of the 15, four failed: Microsoft Live OneCare 1.5; McAfee VirusScan Enterprise version 8.1i; G DATA AntiVirusKit 2007 v17.0.6353; and Norman VirusControl v5.90. The other 11, including software from CA,...

An open letter to Bill Gates
2007-02-06 13:43:01
Dear Bill Gate s Give me back my weekend. I bought a new Windows Vista laptop ? and that?s when the trouble began. My dislike of your new user interface you can put down to the conservatism that comes with advancing years. However having loyally stuck by the galumphing, unaesthetic functionality of your operating systems over the past 15 years, while faced with ridicule from pretentious Mac-loving types, I resent your attempt at an elegance transplant. But what really grates is that your system is incompatible with two of the vital tools of my trade. Vista refuses to load the software for my newish Olympus digital recorder. And here?s what takes the biscuit. Vista rejects my HP IPAQ handheld device ? even though the software for that was created by Microsoft! So in order to put Vista at the centre of what I do, I would have to buy hundreds of pounds of new hardware. Which may be great news for your industry, but makes me regret never having defected to Steve Jobs. Perhaps now?s the t...

The Aditya Birla Group company is making calculated moves to take its presence pan-India in the next couple of years and has worked out a strategy to keep infrastructure costs from mounting. The company is in talks with independent tower vendors including GTL and Essar for setting up more towers and smaller base transceiver stations, apart from sharing cell sites with other mobile operators. Himanshu Kapania, COO, Idea Cellular Ltd, told DNA Money, ?We are in talks with mobile tower manufacturing companies in India and other international giants are coming in, ready to build and maintain towers for others.? According to him, ?Outsourcing will result in a substantial reduction of costs incurred on infrastructure and allow us to spend more on corporate brand building of Idea across t...

Law prohibits financial institutions from processing payments to gambling sites February 05, 2007 (IDG News Service) — A law prohibiting U.S. financial institutions from processing payments to online gambling sites hasn’t stopped U.S. employees from visiting sports-betting sites, according to cybersecurity vendor Scansafe Ltd. Attempted visits to online gambling Web sites by employees of Scansafe’s U.S. customers were up 77% in the week between Jan. 23 and 31; the Super Bowl was yesterday. Scansafe provides a Web-blocking service to large businesses, and it examines 6 billion Web requests a month. In October, President George Bush signed into law a measure prohibiting financial institutions from processing payments to gambling sites. The government has until mid-July to develop the processing regulations for financial institutions. But some online gambling sites have begun telling U.S. customers that financial institutions are already distancing themselves. On Wedn...

Kids at greater risk of seeing online Internet porn than ever
2007-02-06 13:43:01
According to a report called ?Taking on the Inter net Porn Industry?, and a report from the Pediatrics Journal, kids are at greater risk of being exposed to online porn than ever before, giving parents a tougher time than ever in keeping their kids safe online. The ?Taking on the Internet Porn Industry? report from ?The Third Way? has some pretty stark facts on the online porn industry and how it is targeting young children. According to the report: - The most frequent viewers of Internet porn are kids 12-17 years old. - The average age at which children are first exposed to online pornography today is 11 years old. - Certain Internet pornography producers imbed children?s words like Teletubbies and Pokemon as ?meta-tags? to drive kids to their sites. - Approximately 20 new children appear on pornography sites every month, many of them kidnapped and sold into sex. This follows news reports from Reuters and the Associated Press that the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pedi...

Romania president tells Gates that piracy is good
2007-02-06 01:42:02
Piracy kickstarted Romania n software industry Pirated software - especially from Microsoft - kickstarted the Romanian software industry, according to President Traian Basescu. Widespread media reports quote Basescu as saying “Piracy helped the young generation discover computers. It set off the development of the IT industry in Romania.” What’s remarkable is that he said this in front of Bill Gate s at the opening of Microsoft’s global technical centre in Bucharest. Gates apparently ignored the remark. It is not surprising to hear that young people in a nation with relatively low incomes have been using pirated software, and it can be argued that such behaviour actually benefits large vendors: no loss of sales occurs if the people involved would not have been able to afford legitimate copies, there is pressure on them to ‘go legit’ as they enter the workforce (especially when working in software development), and the vendor gains from increased m...

YouTube Told to Remove Viacom Clips
2007-02-06 01:42:02
An agreement could not be reached between the two companies, so Viacom has requested YouTube to take down all Viacom content on the popular video sharing site Viacom yesterday requested that YouTube remove 100,000 unauthorized video clips from the site after on-going licensing negotiations failed. “It has become clear that YouTube is unwilling to come to a fair market agreement that would make Viacom content available to YouTube users,” Viacom said in a public statement issued on Friday. It is unknown if the two sides are going to try to negotiate another agreement in the future. Viacom numbers claim that YouTube users watched Viacom-owned content more than 1.2 billion times on YouTube, according to an outside consultant. Viacom currently owns cable networks MTV, Nickeloden, VH1 and also owns the Paramount Pictures movie studio. YouTube plans on complying with the request from Viacom. “It’s unfortunate that Viacom will no longer be able to benefit from Yo...

AMD Opteron 2200-series Works in Quad FX Motherboards
2007-02-06 01:42:02
ASUS L1N64-SLI boots with AMD Opteron 2218 and standard DDR2-667 memory AMD insider and occasional DailyTech writer Dave Graham posted images of an AMD Opteron 2218 processor running on an ASUS L1N64-SLI motherboard. This is intriguing as the ASUS L1N64-SLI is a motherboard designed for AMD?s Quad FX enthusiast platform. The motherboard BIOS detects the processor correctly and functions properly. It also appears that the system is using standard DDR2-667 MHz memory instead of registered ECC memory typically required by Socket F Opteron-based motherboards. Although it would seem memory compatibility problems would arise, Graham has images of the system passing Windows Vista?s memory diagnostic tool without error. With compatibility with AMD?s Opteron 2200-series processors, the ASUS L1N64-SLI may be the holy grail of dual-socket socket-F motherboards. Although the motherboard is pricey, the compatibility with AMD Opteron 2200-series processors opens up AMD?s Quad-FX platform to more...

Dell Faces Lawsuit Alleging Secret Kickbacks From Intel
2007-02-06 01:42:02
Dell is accused of secretly receiving illegal rebate kickback payments from Intel in return for an exclusive deal Dell has received a class action lawsuit from investors accusing the company of improper accounting in its longtime partnership with chipmaker Intel Corp., reports the Wall Street Journal. Specifically, the lawsuit alleges that Dell’s profits were inflated by hundreds of millions of dollars in ?secret and likely illegal? kickbacks by Intel to ensure the exclusive use of its chips inside Dell computers. The lawsuit also accuses Dell of misleading investors about ?serious accounting, quality and customer-service problems.? The 251-page complaint filed on Wednesday coincided with the surprise resignation of Kevin Rollins — who at the time held the title of CEO at Dell. Rollins, along with now CEO Michael Dell, were both named as participants in the suit. The complaint states that 15 senior people at Dell were privy to the information about the alleged secret agr...

The breach on the stadium site was discovered by Websense Inc.’s automated tools on Jan. 26, but the engineers at the company were not alerted to the problem until this week, when Websense customers complained that they were unable to visit the site. The dolphinsstadium.com and miamidolphins.com sites are affected by the attack, as are mirror copies of those sites such as proplayerstadium.com.
