India: Outsourcing is bad for America
2007-02-04 13:41:03
An India n newspaper slamming outsourcing and H-1B visas? How the World Works is always a sucker for unexpected juxtapositions, so when Rob Sanchez’s JobDestruction Newsletter linked to a supposedly “great article” on H-1B visas and outsourcing from a newspaper called India Daily, I had to investigate. Indeed, the unsigned editorial reads as if it could have been written by the virulently anti-H-1B Sanchez himself, although the command of English syntax was not so hot. Irony alert No. 1: The article is surrounded by Google ads linking to a plethora of Web sites offering all kinds of help with your outsourcing needs, as well as how and where to obtain your own H-1B visa. That was mildly amusing. But what was India Daily? Precious little information about the publication, which has an entire section devoted to outsourcing news, along with sections on Bollywood movies and Indian sports, is obtainable from the Web site, which features an extraordinary number of un-bylin...

Bill Gates Speaks on Windows, Criticizes Mac Ads
2007-02-02 19:38:10
Bill Gate s takes exception to Apple’s “lying” ads With the launch of Wind ows Vista, Bill Gates is giving it the proverbial ?one hundred and ten percent? in explaining to everyone in the world why they should care about the new operating system. In response to analyst speculation that Windows Vista could be the last Microsoft operating system of its kind, as we know it, Gates replies to Newsweek, ?Well, people have said that at every major Windows release. Java was going to eliminate Windows programming, or thin clients were going to eliminate people buying PCs.? The Microsoft chairman says that operating systems keep getting better and richer and that there are no shortages of radical things that will be happening in the next release. When asked if Microsoft will be back with a new OS in 2010-2011, Gates was confident enough to say, ?Absolutely.? ?And I don’t know why [Apple is] acting like it?s superior. I don’t even get it. What are they trying to sa...

Sony declares Wii an ?impulse buy?
2007-02-02 19:38:10
Sony US spokesperson, Dave Karraker, has dismissed the Wii as an ?impulse buy?, even as his own company blames the PlayStation 3 for its profit slide, and all indications are that the PlayStation 3 is way behind the Wii in terms of sales and buzz. Is the Wii an impulse buy? In an interview with the New York Times, Karraker said that because the PlayStation 3 was much more powerful than the Wii, it did not belong in the same category. ?Wii could be considered an impulse buy more than anything else,? he declared. Karraker?s theory is that newcomers are buying the Wii, while the PlayStation 3 is attracting hardcore gamers. He also told the New York Times that Sony was selling out the 100,000 PlayStation 3s it was sending to the US every week. Let?s put Karraker?s comments in context. Nintendo has sold more than 1.1 million Wiis in the US since its launch, while Sony has sold around 700,000 PlayStation 3s. Given that the PlayStation 2 sold more than 105 million units around the world, a...

UK to regulate online gambling advertisers
2007-02-02 19:38:10
Online gambling operators outside Europe will have to seek Government permission to advertise in the UK. The British government’s reform of gambling law mandates the seeking of permission in an attempt to crack down on rogue operators. The gambling markets will be liberalised on 1st September and part of that process will be controls over gambling websites based outside of Europe and Gibraltar. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell told the Financial Times that a ban on poorly regulated websites could protect UK gamblers against bogus or rogue site operators. Any bookmakers based outside the European Economic Area and Gibraltar who wish to advertise in the UK will have to prove that the country in which they operate has a licensing regime which ensures fairness of gaming, has anti-crime measures and protects children from exposure to gambling. The announcement was made as the Government outlined the locations for the main element of liberalisation, a raft of new casinos, including on...

2007-02-02 19:38:10
Trust approves plans for P2P service Zoe Mutter The BBC?s plans to offer TV on demand have approved by the BBC Trust subject to certain conditions. It?s expected that many BBC TV shows will be available for download by the end of the year, although the full approval of the plans will follow a two-month consultation period. If it goes ahead, viewers will be able to watch popular shows online or download them directly to their computers. Shows will remain playable for up to 30 days after being downloaded or a week after the first time they?re viewed. The BBC?s new iPlayer, a free piece of software that was known as the Integrated Media Player during its test phase, is central to the new service. The catch-up service has received cautious approval from Ofcom. The UK regulator has predict...

Firms looking to eastern Europe for IT outsourcing
2007-02-02 19:38:10
IT and software development outsourcing firms in eastern Euro pe are finding their services increasingly in demand, according to recent reports. The relatively low cost of IT outsourcing services in eastern European countries such as Russia and Poland, coupled with their close proximity to western Europe, is encouraging many western companies to send large parts of their IT infrastructure and software development programmes east, claims ComputerWeekly. Cities such as Moscow and Krakow are proving to be hubs of outsourcing activity and it is easy to see why, claims the management consultancy McKinsey. Average wages are in line with those in India, which is another main source of IT outsourcing, while the talent pool in eastern Europe is immense, with a large number of highly skilled graduates looking for technology jobs. In addition, the increasingly solid infrastructure of former East er n Bloc countries ensures that firms can be confident that their investment is low-risk. “You ...

Security flaw in Vista? show me the money
2007-02-02 07:37:03
After what seemed to be a lifetime, Windows Vista finally hit the consumer market. For many, this is the start of a new experience in Windows; but for some, is a race to find vulnerabilities in Microsoft?s new OS. Evgeny Legerov, founder of the security firm Gleg Ltd. in Moscow has been finding security flaws in web browsers and operating systems for years. ?To find a vulnerability, you have to do a lot of hard work,? said Evgeny. He?s not doing it for a smile or renowned fame; he?s in it for the money. Evgeny claims doing the responsible thing just doesn?t pay the bills, ?If you follow what they call responsible disclosure, in most cases all you receive is an ordinary thank you or sometimes nothing at all.? Gleg Ltd. sells vulnerability research to customers around the world for a minimum of $10,000; but claims their is a huge black market for such data. One example discovered by the Japanese antivirus company, TredMicro, is a case where a hacker on a Romanian Web forum was offer...

Ballmer on Vista: There?s ?Plenty More Where That Came From?
2007-02-02 07:37:03
Despite analysts speculation that Microsoft can’t keep up the pace, Ballmer states that Vista is a sign of things to come It has been a huge endeavor to get Windows Vista out the door, but according to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, there’s “plenty more where that came from.? Sure enough, there is more to come starting with Vista?s first service pack which should be released before the end of 2007. There has been much speculation in the industry, however, that Vista (and similarly Office 2007) would be “last of its kind.? With the rise of the Internet and the “have it now” aspects of online applications like Google Docs & Spreadsheets and Google Calendar, many experts believe that Microsoft’s model of doing business is going the way of the dinosaur. “Microsoft made Vista the old-fashioned way, as a single packaged product that it puts on a disk so users can buy it in a store and load it onto their computers,” said Dean Takahas...

Israeli Judge bans Online Poker & Online Gambling in Israel
2007-02-02 07:37:03
A precedent-setting ruling was delivered this week against online poker and online gambling in the Israel i court case involving Gibraltar-based online bookmaker Victor Chandler’s CEO Michael Carlton, effectively banning online gambling companies from delivering any services to Israeli customers. The Israeli business journal Globes Online reported yesterday that Rishon LeZion Magistrates Court Judge Abraham Heiman stated, “In the era of the Internet, the original location of content (Internet services) is marginal and negligible. The center of gravity, especially the territorial legal jurisdiction, must switch to the end point, in other words, the individual computer.” Therefore, said Heiman, “A foreign company operating an online gambling site may not hide behind the fact that the company and its servers sit in another country, and it is breaking the law if does not block access to Israelis.” Gambling in Israel, like France and several other European co...

Online gaming within Italy will soon be fully legal
2007-02-02 07:37:03
Italian poker players will soon enjoy unprecedented online poker freedom as of January. Online gaming within Italy will soon be fully legal thanks to the Decree on Liberalization, Article 38. Already, major European sites such as Ladbrokes, Betfair and William Hill are chomping at the bit to get involved in this new frontier. In fact, a full 17,000 licenses for online casinos and poker rooms will be auctioned off soon. Other European countries may follow Italy’s lead before too long. Brick-and-mortar poker in Italy is thriving, despite only a few casinos countrywide and only three of these offering the game. First up is one of the most interesting cases. Casino di Campione is the largest employer in the exclave Campione d’Italia. This exclave uses currency and many other elements of Swiss culture. Because it’s an exclave, it’s not subject to VAT, nor the tax laws of Italy or Switzerland, making it the ideal location for a large casino. Casino di Campione offe...

No More Clean Installs Using Upgrade Discs With Windows Vista
2007-01-31 13:34:02
Microsoft adjusts its policy for user with Vista upgrade CDs Microsoft is changing a long-standing tradition when it comes to upgrading from a previous version of Wind ows to Windows Vista . When using an upgrade CD, popping in a previous version disc during setup will no longer satisfy the people in Redmond. For example, when performing a clean install of Windows XP Professional using an upgrade CD, users would run through the normal setup routine until prompted to insert a previous version of Windows. A user could pop in a Windows 98 or Windows 2000 CD for upgrade compliance and then the setup routine would move along as usual. Microsoft has cut out this process for Windows Vista and forces users who buy an upgrade CD to actually have a valid install of Windows XP Home or Professional on their machines before upgrading. For most users, this wouldn’t be a problem. They more than likely have an existing copy of Windows XP installed and would have no problems upgrading to Window...

Game Developer Says Vista Breaks Casual Online Games
2007-01-31 13:34:02
Former Microsoft employee criticizes Vista controls The world is still absorbing all the added features and security of Windows Vista, game developers and casual gamers may have something to be unhappy about when it comes to the Microsoft?s operating system. According to game developer WildTangent, a developer that makes small online games for casual gamers, Windows Vista breaks compatibility with games on MSN, RealArcade, Yahoo Games and AOL Games. ?Vista’s incompatibility with most downloadable casual games, including those on Microsoft’s own gaming portal demonstrates the enormous challenges facing many small game developers with getting their games to work with the new OS,? read a WildTangent statement. In addition to breaking existing games, the security restrictions of the new operating system will rely heavily on ESRB ratings to block children from accessing inappropriate games. Alex St. John, CEO and co-Founder of WildTangent, and once evangelist for Microsoft?s...

Being Wrong About Gambling Rights
2007-01-31 13:34:02
I’m still waiting for someone to elaborate where in the Constitution of the country or any state there is a right to gamble.  Gambling is an activity we all take under our own volition, but its availability will never be guaranteed.  If enough of us enjoy it, there will be someone willing to take on our action.  It’s free commerce working its magic.  Further even if we considered it a “right”, we are still not seeing an attack on the act of gambling at the federal level.  Lawmakers and the DOJ have come to the conclusion that they only way the can attack the industry is to attack those who provide it.  It is a typical response, but it has always failed.  How long have they been fighting drugs this way?  If the action only attacks the supply and not the demand, then the action is doomed to failure.  Let’s all get this straight.  We still have had exactly one person convicted for online gambling.  He got a $500 fine, chicken feed compared to the thousa...

eBay To Delist Virtual Goods From MMORPGs
2007-01-31 13:34:02
Online auctions to ban virtual items acquired from online games One of the newest developments in massively multiplayer online games is the sale of virtual goods. Players who have spent hours working for and accumulating items may wish to sell them for real-world money. Outside of in-game avenues, one of the more popular ways to sell ones in-game currency, items, property and characters is to list on eBay. But according to what the popular auction site had to say, sales of virtual items will soon be disallowed. Speaking with Slashdot, Hani Durzy of eBay explained that future auctions for virtual goods from online games would be delisted ?for the overall health of the marketplace.? Durzy points to eBay?s existing policy for selling digitally delivered goods and items: ?The seller must be the owner of the underlying intellectual property, or authorized to distribute it by the intellectual property owner.? eBay may be concerned about potential legal ramifications if a games publisher ...

New security updates for Vista along with new Vista Ultimate Extras Microsoft delivers Texas Hold’em Poker among other things for Vista Ultimate users For those of you who have plunked down the extra cash for the version of Wind ows Vista that is at the top of the totem pole, there are a couple of new Vista Ultimate Extras available for download right now. According to Paul Thurrott, Windows Texas Hold’em Poker requires a minimum Windows Experience Index of 1.0 to run and 2.0 to operate at optimum levels. The “Bitlocker and EFS Enhancements” are listed as follows: Windows BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool - configures your hard drive so that you can use the BitLocker Drive Encryption feature of Window...
AMD Expects Quad-Core ?Barcelona? to ?Outperform Clovertown by 40%?
2007-01-27 13:32:01
AMD has high hopes for its upcoming native quad-core design When it comes to quad-core processors for the desktop and server arenas, Intel has pretty much had the market to itself since November 2006 (if you don’t count AMD’s Quad FX platform). Intel’s quad-core processors were officially announced on November 14 in the form of the desktop-oriented Core 2 Extreme QX6700 and the server-oriented Clovertown Xeon 5300 series. Intel has been using its quad-core Clovertown processors to grab marketshare back from AMD in the server markets and has been putting significant pricing pressure on AMD. “Early indications are that Clovertown is contributing a meaningful amount of business to Intel in a surprisingly short period of time. It’s not marketing fluff,” said Mercury Research analyst Dean McCarron. Technology Business Research’s John Spooner added that Clovertown “has allowed Intel to put some pricing pressure on AMD. Intel can tout a lowe...

BBC workers to go on strike over India outsourcing
2007-01-27 13:32:01
LONDON: BBC staff will stage a two-day strike next week in protest over work being outsourced to India , a trade union announced yesterday. Members of the Communication Work ers Union (CWU) at the BBC’s television licensing headquarters in Bristol, southwest England, were to take industrial action on Monday and Tuesday, warning that the outsourcing could lead to hundreds of job losses. More than 100 workers were to strike after a 95 per cent vote in favour of industrial action. Employees are angry at the decision by Capita, Britain’s leading business process outsourcing company which is contracted to administer the licence, to outsource work to Mumbai. Workers at the BBC’s Bristol site collect the licence fee, which people must pay to receive television broadcasts. “CWU members have been left with no alternative but to take industrial action as Capita are unwilling to provide long-term guarantees in relation to jobs,” said CWU assistant secretary Andy Fur...

Dutch Agency Joins Battle Against Apple iTunes
2007-01-27 13:32:01
The animosity towards the way Apple does business with iTunes is continuing to grow DailyTech yesterday reported that German and French consumer groups have joined forces with groups from Norway, Denmark and Sweden.  Today, however, Dutch consumer protection agency Consumentenbond also joined the battle to force Apple to change the way it operates its iTunes MP3 download service.  Apple has until Oct. 1, 2007 to comply before facing legal action. Consumentenbond has filed a formal complaint seeking an investigation into the business practices of Apple’s iTunes.  The group is also urging Dutch consumers to avoid buying iPods and downloading songs from iTunes — other MP3 players and music download services such as eMusic are recommended by the group. The organizations are calling for Apple to remove limitations that prevent digital music consumers from being able to download a song through iTunes and not be able to put it on any non-Apple MP3 players.   A consumer group ...

Google Set to Remove Online Gambling Advertisements
2007-01-26 01:30:01
Casino advertisements on the giant search engine Google could be a thing of the past following a decision by Google HQ currently being reported in marketing media. The reason behind the decision is reportedly that Google and its rival Yahoo! have allegedly been warned off by the US Justice Department authorities for promoting gambling indirectly to an underage audience through advertising pop-ups. The voluntary decision applies only to the United States in the case of Yahoo!, where Justice officials have been exercising a major crackdown on all aspects of Internet gambling. However, it is understood that Google plans to extend the ban globally. The news follows hot on the heels of reports that the US Justice Department is to order banks in the UK to hand over information concerning their dealings with several online poker sites. It seems apparent that the Department of Justice is targeting online sites that trade their stock publicly on the London Stock Exchange, such as PartyGami...

French Authorities Say Non to Online Gambling
2007-01-26 01:30:01
In an unusual move, the French authorities have followed in American footsteps by apparently waging war on online gambling. One of the most famous faces and a top online poker room are already facing advertising bans. Fans of televised poker on British screens will be well aware of the Chris Moneymaker advertisements. As one of the faces of Pokerstars, one of the Internet’s most popular poker rooms, Moneymaker is a well known poker personality and former World Series of Poker champion. Across the English Channel our near neighbours in France are aware of Moneymaker (and Pokerstars) too! Le Salon des Ambassadeurs, a French club, have banned all images of Moneymaker and Pokerstars. The former world champion often comes under attack for his playing style and the manner of his victory at the WSOP a couple of years ago. However, it’s hard to imagine Moneymaker could have ever envisaged his face, along with his sponsor Pokerstars, would be banned from advertisements. It appear...

British public backs new online gambling laws
2007-01-26 01:30:01
UK — (PRESS RELEASE) — Controversial government plans to license and regulate online gambling have strong public support according to a new survey conducted by PKR.com and YouGov. The findings, part of the Poker UK 2007 report issued by www.PKR.com, showed that 63% of the 4,630 respondents agreed with Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell’s strategy to oversee the online gambling industry from within the UK. Even amongst non-gamblers, support for the licensing and regulation of online gambling was high, with over 50% agreeing with government plans. Only 14% of non-gambling respondents disagreed. The survey also highlighted that licensing and regulation plays a major role in consumer decisions about which online gaming sites they play. Nearly two thirds of those polled (63%) believe that it is important for an internet gambling site to have a licence, with only 5% seeing licensing as “not important at all”. What’s more, the PKR.com/YouGov poll revealed ...

Vista Service Pack 1 Set for 2H?07 Release
2007-01-24 13:29:01
Microsoft prepares for Vista Service Pack 1 Many consumers and businesses make the decision to stay away from new Windows releases until the first service pack becomes available. According to internal Microsoft emails, the first service pack for Windows Vista could come as early as this year. Bink.nu posted the email in its entirety which details Microsoft’s plans for the service pack and the role that it expects testers to play in the development of the first major update for Vista. Microsoft is looking to tackle “regressions from Windows Vista and Windows XP, security, deployment blockers and other high impact issues are the primary focus for the Service Pack. The Windows TAP team will work with customers to identify and drive these issues.” Microsoft is betting heavily on its customers and partners to ensure that Service Pack 1 is available to customers before the end of 2007. SCEA CEO Says PS3 Will be ?Difficult to Cost Reduce?
2007-01-24 13:29:01
SCEA CEO says PS3 price drop still a ways off while Japan sees the cheapest PS3 yet Along with the Neo Geo and 3DO, the PlayStation 3 is one of the most expensive consoles ever released. While price drops are inevitable during any console?s lifespan, those holding off until a cheaper PS3 rolls around may find themselves waiting longer than expected. As noted by Joystiq, Game Informer magazine interviewed SCEA?s President and CEO Jack Tretton and one of the topics discussed was PS3?s cost. The magazine asked if the PS3 would see a price drop schedule similar to PS2, which saw a reduction of a third from $299 to $199 just over a year and a half after launch. Tretton replied to the question with a simple ?No,? thus leaving the current price points where they are at for at least the rest of 2007. Tretton reasoned that the enormous R&D costs of the PS3 make it ?a lot more difficult to cost reduce? than the PS2. ?There’s a heck of a lot more under the hood and it costs us mor...

Deadly Wii contest results in firing of 10 radio employees
2007-01-23 01:27:01
Sacramento (CA) - Local Sacramento radio station KDND has fired the hosts of its morning talk show, along with seven other employees, after an on-air contest to win a Nintendo Wii ended up killing one of the participants. The show, “Morning Rave”, has also been pulled while the station investigates the death of 28-year-old Jennifer Lea Strange. During Tuesday’s show, a group of people had a chance to win an elusive Nintendo Wii by competing in a contest to see who could drink the most water without going to the restroom. Strange, who finished second place in the contest, skipped work because of a headache and went home. She was later found dead. According to a preliminary autopsy, Strange died of water intoxication, reports the Associated Press. She had reportedly drunk nearly two gallons of water before she quit. KDND has launched an internal investigation, but the county sheriff’s office said it was not investigating. Strange signed a waiver, relieving the ...

Radio station sued for deadly Wii contest
2007-01-23 01:27:01
A deadly Nintendo Wii contest has now spawned a lawsuit against a Sacramento radio station. KDND-FM offered a free Nintendo Wii to whoever drank the most water without going to the bathroom. Contest ant Jennifer Strange, a 28-year-old mother, died after drinking several bottles of waters.Strange was found dead last Friday in her Rancho Cordova home several hours after drinking the water. She complained of a headache to her supervisors. The coroner’s office has determined that Strange died because of water intoxication. Drinking too much water can dilute electrolyte levels and cause cells to swell and eventually burst. The radio station has since a total of 10 employees including all the DJs involved in the contest. Police are looking into the death and could press manslaughter charges. Source: Tgdaily

Microsoft made the Zune because partner hardware ?sucks?
2007-01-23 01:27:01
Thanks to yet another Microsoft antitrust suit in Iowa, subpoenaed emails have revealed a moment of candidness and clarity at Microsoft in 2003 when Jim Allchin (Co-President, Platforms & Services Division, depicted left) and Amir Majidimehr (Corporate Vice President, Consumer Media Technology Group) had an email thread that basically summarized the portable media device playing field then, and for the most part, now. Some choice quites from the email back-and-forth: Jim: title “sucking on media players”; regarding a current Creative player (probably a Nomad, perhaps a Zen Touch): “My goodness it’s terrible… What I don’t understand though is I was told the new Creative Labs device would be comparable to Apple. That is so not the case.” Amir: “Now you feel our pain.” He suggests giving cash bonuses for partners that come up with decent devices. In the instance that doesn’t work: “it is time for us to roll up our s...

It?s official?Wii use can cause weight loss
2007-01-23 01:27:01
Video gamers who’d rather battle virtual villains than fight the flab can take heart. Use of the new Nintendo Wii can lead to weight loss. After six weeks and 21 hours of total game play on Nintendo’s new game console, Philadelphia resident Mickey DeLorenzo is nine pounds lighter and making a splash with his new svelte self. “I’m on my 15 minutes here,” he joked, referring to the famous Andy Warhol quote about 15 minutes of fame, in a telephone interview with Reuters on Friday. DeLorenzo, 25, came up with the idea for his experiment after he and his fiancee ended up breathless and glistening with sweat after virtually pummeling each other in the Wii Sports boxing game. “On the fly, as I was typing my blog posts, I set up a daily regimen and went at it 100 percent,” said DeLorenzo, who tipped the scales at 181 pounds–where he’s been for the last couple years–when he started the experiment on December 3. He ate as usual and d...

mwave.com lists several editions of Wind ows Vista as in stock and ready to ship Although the official launch of Windows Vista won’t take place until January 30, that hasn’t stopped some online retailers from making the operating system available early. mwave.com is listing three Vista SKUs on its website that are in stock and ready to ship. The editions available include Vista 32-bit Home Basic OEM (Microsoft Part Number: 66G-00576) for $89.90, Vista 32-bit Home Basic OEM 3-pack (Microsoft Part Number: 66G-00613) for $268.90 and Vista 32-bit Business OEM (Microsoft Part Number: 66J-02289) for $139.90.
