A peek at faster Power6, Cell chips
2006-12-31 07:03:02
Judging by details revealed in a chip conference agenda, the clock frequency race isn’t over yet. IBM’s Power 6 processor will be able to exceed 5 gigahertz in a high-performance mode, and the second-generation Cell Broadband Engine processor from IBM, Sony and Toshiba will run at 6GHz, according to the program for the International Solid State Circuits Conference that begins February 11 in San Francisco. Chipmakers have run into problems increasing chip clock speed–essentially an electronic heartbeat that synchronizes operations in a processor–because higher frequencies have led to unmanageable power consumption and waste heat. To compensate, Intel and Advanced Micro Devices have turned instead to the addition of multiple processing cores on each slice of silicon. That’s effective when computers are juggling numerous tasks at the same time, but increasing the clock speed means an individual task can run faster. The first-generation Cell Broadband Engine...

PS3 units exchanged for Wii
2006-12-30 19:03:01
Scalpers have been returning the machine in favour of Wii . December 30, 2006 - In an interesting series of events, the highly touted PS3, of which people were willing to gun down innocent buyers just for the sake of stealing the beast, is being returning to stores across the United States in large volumes. Ebay prices have plummeted, and people who intended to make a pretty profit on poor, desperate gamers’ dollars have been hit hard it would seem. Further, it appears the focus has shifted to Wii, with many PS3 units being traded for Wii units. The PS3, despite lacking in numbers everywhere, whether it be Japan or the US, is actually becoming readily available at retail channels. The Wii however is becoming harder and harder to find. After one month, no rush to adopt Vista
2006-12-30 19:03:01
Windows Vista has been on the market for nearly a month now, but enterprise users and industry experts agree that Microsoft’s latest and greatest OS still isn’t yet ready to replace XP. The problem is not with the software itself — by most accounts, Vista is technically solid — but with myriad peripheral issues that Microsoft must work out to take the pain out of using Vista. Take patching, for example. On Dec. 12, Microsoft released an Internet Explorer 7 fix that improved the performance of IE’s phishing filter. The software had been bogged down by Web sites with a large number of frames, and users had been complaining. Microsoft patched the problem for Windows XP and Server 2003 users, but not for Vista. That update will come after the consumer release of Vista hits the market some time in January, according to a spokeswoman for Microsoft’s public relations agency. And although Microsoft is now issuing security patches for Vista, performance-r...

Firefox developer rebukes Google
2006-12-30 19:03:01
One of the lead developers behind the Fire fox browser has accused Google of abusing its powerful position in the search market to promote its growing range of products. In a blog posting this week, Blake Ross argued that Google was wrong to include plugs for its Calendar, Blogger and Picasa at the top of search results for terms like ‘calendar’, ‘blogging’ or ‘photo sharing’. “This is clearly bad for competitors, and it’s also a bad sign for Google,” wrote Ross, 21, who has been one of the driving forces behind Firefox. As Ross pointed out, many other Web companies also cross-promote their services. However, he argued that Google ? with its motto of “Don’t be evil” ? should hold itself to a higher standard. “Google is predicated on the idea that the democratic structure of the Web will push the cream to the top. Search for “photo sharing” and you should already get the highest quality services....

AMD wins small victory in antitrust fight
2006-12-30 19:03:01
AMD won a small victory in its antitrust case on Wednesday, prevailing on a dispute about whether Intel would share information from operations outside the United States. Concurring with AMD’s request, a judicially appointed special master overseeing elements of the case had recommended on 15 December that Intel share information from foreign operations in the evidence-gathering process called discovery. On Thursday, Intel said it wouldn’t fight that recommendation. “While Intel obviously had hoped for a different outcome regarding discovery, Intel of course will comply with the special master’s decision and will respond to discovery as the special master directs,” an Intel attorney said in a letter to the court. Given Intel’s position on foreign discovery, “We expect that to begin immediately,” AMD spokesman Michael Silverman said Thursday. The case is scheduled to go to trial in April 2009, he added. AMD filed its antitrust case agai...

GeForce 8800 Series PCIe Issues
2006-12-30 19:03:01
In addition to having huge driver problems, it looks like G80 is rife with PCIe troubled to boot. Or to not boot as the case may be. In DX9. Without PCI SIG approval. There are reports of 8800s not working in several PCIe 8x slots. Toss in that the PCIe SIG compatibility list shows no sign of an 8800 anywhere and you have a problem. People familiar with the verification process tell me that there were more than enough plugfests for NV to get certification, but they either didn’t try or failed. Judging from the massive compatibility problems reported to me, I would put my money on failure. Source:  Vr-zone

PayPal trials Virtual Debit Card to fight off Google
2006-12-29 01:00:04
PayPal users will soon be able to generate a one-off debit card number for online purchases, eliminating the need to send their person credit card details across the web. Currently in limited beta, PayPal Virtual Debit Card is a free service that can be used on any website worldwide that accepts MasterCard. It requires users to download software, developed by Dublin-based Orbiscom, which is added to their computer’s system tray and browser’s toolbar. When PayPal users are ready to make a purchase on a website that accepts MasterCard, a pop-up asks if they’d like to pay with PayPal Virtual Debit Card. Clicking the pop-up generates a pre-populated payment form. The service generates a new card number for each transaction, along with a card verification number - the three-digit number usually found on the back of physical cards. Funds are deducted from users? PayPal accounts. The move comes as internet behemoth Google makes inroads into PayPal’s territory with ...

Hackers Claim HD DVD Encryption Circumvented
2006-12-29 01:00:04
BackupHDDVD may be this generations DeCSS This article was first published on HWUpgrade.com It hasn?t been completely verified yet, but a user named “muslix64″ has posted an exploit in a thread on the Doom9 forum claiming he has been able to circumvent AACS, the encoding format used to protect HD DVD and Blu-ray content. “Muslix64″ claims to have completely backed up an HD DVD movie and provides a Rapidshare link to download BackupHDDVD, a small Java-based utility that aids users to backup their HD DVDs. A YouTube link to see the program in action has also been posted. “Muslix64″ describes the utility as “a java based command line utility that decrypt video files (.evo) from a HD DVD disk that you own, to your hard drive and you can play them back with a HD DVD player software.” Although much of the dirty work in backing up an HD DVD movie is done by the tool, users are still required to find their own cryptographic keys for the disc b...

Nvidia G84 shapes up
2006-12-29 01:00:04
Samples in February 2007 THE G84 IS Nvidia’s DirectX 10 entry-level card. This is set to replace Geforce 7300 from the market. Nvidia is really having problems making a real impact on the entry-level market but maybe will have better luck with this introduction. The chip is a cut down version of the G80 and will probably come up with some odd memory controller number. It will support Shader Model 4.0, the unified way, and it will work in SLI. We expect this chip to be announced around CeBIT time, in March. It’s important because it will help the DirectX 10 market to expand by embracing people who do not want to spend a fortune on graphics. Source: Theinquirer

PS3s Being Traded For Wiis
2006-12-28 13:00:02
By Jason McMaster So, first people camp out in front of Best Buys for days at a time to get the PS3, and then they trade them for Nintendo Wii s. Seriously. Tony Conrad, CEO and Founder of Sphere, pointed this out to us and we had to see it to believe it. There are people out there trying to trade their PS3s for Nintendo Wiis and some of them are offering to take a loss. In order to check out exactly how widespread this phenomenon is, I had to venture into the dangerous, uncharted waters of craigslist.org and start doing a little searching of my own. We decided upon looking in some of the hottest cities on craigslist: Austin, New York and San Francisco. In my search of Austin, I only turned up 6 total people who wanted to trade their PS3 for a Wii, so I moved on to New York City, which boasted a pretty substantial 18 desired trades. Here?s where it gets crazy: in San Francisco, there are 48 different PS3 for Wii trades going on at this moment. Now, keep in mind, most of these trades...

2006 Online Gambling Industry Year in Review
2006-12-28 13:00:02
Hartley Henderson With the start of the year 2006, it was clear that the online gambling industry was quite strong despite efforts to curtail it. The industry had boomed to $12 billion in revenues, publicly traded companies like Sportingbet, BetOnSports, Party Poker, etc. were all flourishing and their stock prices were rising. Even Betcorp, which had struggled in prior years, started showing a major turnaround. Meanwhile, private companies like Pinnacle Sports and World Sports Exchange continued to generate new interest with unique lines and low vig wagering, and Bodog continued to add new companies to its repertoire including a music company, an information page and a charity website. Golden Palace continued its pursuit to purchase every ridiculous item on EBay like William Shatner’s kidney stone and Bodog did everything in its power to get its sportsbook website recognized through press releases whenever possible. On the knowledge and watchdog side of things, Majorwager had...

Aussie banks plan outsourcing to India
2006-12-28 13:00:02
Press Trust of India / Melbourne December 27, 2006 Leading Australian banks, including ANZ and St. George, are planning to send their back-office jobs to India. A media report said an analysis of the latest statements by the so-called “four plus one” leading Australian banks suggests there was a slow but growing movement to transfer processing work done here to lower-cost countries like India. While ANZ, St. George, National Australia Bank and Westpac have been sensitive to campaigns being waged by the Finance Sector Union against offshoring by committing to keep their call centres in the country, the equivalent of several hundred jobs across the industry are now, or will shortly be, based outside Australia, The Age reported. ANZ, St George and Westpac have vigorously defended the move in recent weeks saying they needed to consider and, if necessary, act on plans to switch back-office work overseas to remain competitive. NAB is expected to follow suit. Only...

IT MAY BE ILLEGAL, BUT THE GREEKS LOVE ONLINE GAMBLING
2006-12-28 13:00:02
Online gambling set to expand Greek gamblers spend over Euro 8.5 billion a year on their passion for gambling, the Greek news medium Kathimerini reported this week, commenting that growing amounts are being spent on online casinos, lotteries and other forms of illegal online gambling. About Euro 3 billion will be spent in all of the country’s nine casinos in 2007 while annual turnover booked by OPAP, one of the largest companies listed on the Athens Stock Exchange, is around the Euro 3.5 billion mark. Experts said that a combination of slick marketing campaigns and a shift in community values has fueled demand for gambling. The number of visitors heading to casinos is expected to nearly double during the festive season. Data shows that the Loutraki casino, west of Athens, is visited by about 3 000 people daily but the figure shoots up to around 5 000 around Christmas. Meanwhile, punters turning to illegal electronic gambling are spending almost Euro1.5 billion per year on thei...

In October, Samsung showed of its first 50nm DRAM chip, in early November the company announced the development of a 16-chip multi-chip package (MCP) for memory and just two weeks ago it announced new high-speed OneDRAM memory for use in mobile devices. Samsung continues to make advances in the memory market and today has announced a new revolution in the mobile DRAM market. The company has developed new low-power 1Gb DRAM chip for use in mobile applications. The new 1Gb DRAM is built on Samsung’s 80nm process technology allowing it to be 20% thinner than 512MB double-stack 1Gb packages. The 1Gb DRAM chip also takes advantage of a temperature-sensing feature to maximize the efficiency of the self-refresh cycle. This reduces power consumption in standby mode by up to 30%. Samsung expects for the chips to find a home in mobile p...

Security in 2007: Zero-Day World Puts Bull?s-Eye on Vista
2006-12-27 12:57:01
Who will find the first major security flaw in Windows Vista ? Will it be released as zero-day? Is there an end in sight to the botnet menace? Is spam close to being canned? Just who are these criminals phishing for your credit card data? Those are just a handful of the hot-button topics that will dominate the security news headlines in 2007?right alongside the never-ending debates on responsible disclosure, more “month-of-(pick a vendor/product)-bugs” projects and new research into offensive/defensive rootkits. A bold prediction on spam One of the most unlikely predictions for 2007 comes from SecureWorks malware researcher Joe Stewart: spammers will have to evolve and find new attack techniques if they intend to maintain their level of profitability. Roughly translated, Stewart believes the massive surge in spam e-mail will taper off in 2007, unless spammers find new tricks to bypass a hardened Windows Vista and improvements to existing anti-spam technology and technique...

Windows Vista Activation Cracked Yet Again
2006-12-27 12:57:01
Another day, another Vista activation crack It was just a week ago that Microsoft’s Jim Allchin was talking about Wind ows Vista security and how the operating system would fend off attacks from malicious code and hackers. Allchin made no mention, however, of the recent successful attempts at cracking Windows Vista ’s activation scheme. Earlier this month, pirates found a way to spoof Microsoft’s Key Management Service (KMS) server using a VMware image. The software hack allowed pirates to run copies of Windows Vista Business and Enterprise for up to 180 days. The folks over at Engadget have come across another exploit that allows users to permanently activate Windows Vista using crack files and some registry trickery. The TimeStop Vista cracks only works on 32-bit versions of Windows Vista, so those looking to crack 64-bit versions of the operating system may be out of luck. The crack effectively stops the countdown times to mandatory Vista activation and freezes ...

February Could Mean Trouble for Online Poker Rooms
2006-12-27 12:57:01
February might be the month that many banking institutions install banking regulations to hamstring online poker transactions according to some industry experts, but others wonder if it is going to matter in the long run. When the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act went into law in October of this year, many online poker rooms turned away from their US facing businesses, and those that remain are depending largely on Neteller, which has steadfastly remained resolute that they will not comply with the UIGEA. Recently poker rooms have been encouraging customers to use other means of making deposits, just in case. Source: launchpoker

How Nintendo used mothers to spread Wii
2006-12-26 18:55:01
Nintendo talks about how it gathered ‘alpha mums’ to market its Wii console. December 25, 2006 - First there were boastings by Nintendo that it had designed Wii with women in mind, and now the company has come out from the shadows to reveal that it actually used mothers as a means of spreading the word about the new generation system in an effort to get those beyond young males engaged. The Big N merged viral marketing techniques with Tupperware parties in the leadup to the launch of Wii, with the recruitment of ‘tech-savvy’ mums dubbed ‘alpha mums’, who shared the console with their friends. Linda Perry was one such mum, and describing her experience, said, “Most people [she invited] were like, ‘I don’t play games.’ “ She added that by the end of the night, however, “everybody was playing it. People were working up a sweat.” George Harrison, a Nintendo of America Vice-President, said, “Our core pre...

Social networking catches fire
2006-12-26 00:53:01
A year ago, a few things were apparent in the fledgling phenomenon of massive social-networking sites. Friendster, once at the top of the heap, was struggling–late in 2005 it was rumored that the site might go up for sale. But at the same time, competitors began to rise quickly. MySpace.com, a recent News Corp. acquisition that was best known as a hub for teenagers and unsigned bands, began a rapid climb to the top of the Web’s pecking order. And Facebook, started by then-Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg as an alternative to his school’s paper directory, broadened its base as it accepted registration from corporate as well as university e-mail accounts. At the same time, international rivals like South Korea’s Cyworld ambitiously took aim at the lucrative American youth market. Soon enough, the growing prowess of online social networking began to attract the attention of the U.S. government–for a variety of reasons. In May, Congress considered the possib...

Vista security spec ?longest suicide note in history?
2006-12-25 12:52:01
VISTA’S CONTENT PROTECTION specification could very well constitute the longest suicide note in history, claims a new and detailed report from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.”Peter Gutmann’s report describes the pernicious DRM built into Vista and required by MS for approval of hardware and drivers,” said INQ reader Brad Steffler, MD, who brought the report to our attention. “As a physician who uses PCs for image review before I perform surgery, this situation is intolerable. It is also intolerable for me as a medical school professor as I will have to switch to a MAC or a Linux PC. These draconian dicta just might kill the PC as we know it.” But this isn’t just a typical anti-Microsoft rant. Gutmann’s report runs to 6,000 words and contains hardly any FSF-style juvenile invective. “Windows Vista includes an extensive reworking of core OS elements in order to provide content protection for so-called “premium cont...

Wikipedia Founder Plans Search Engine to Rival Google
2006-12-25 12:52:01
Wikiasari, the project aimed at competing with Google and Yahoo, will be coming soon The founder of the vastly popular Web encyclopedia Wikipedia is planning on developing Wikiasari, an Internet search engine which will compete with Yahoo and Google.  In an interview with The Times of London, Jimmy Wales mentioned that his web site search engine will utilize the same user-based technology that Wikipedia uses. Feeling that Google’s computer-based algorithmic searches can be sometimes easily manipulated, Wikiasari hopes that user-based human judgment will be significantly better.  Because spammers and commercial ventures are learning and adapting to be able to manipulate Google’s search methods, Wikiasari may have a viable alternative search method. In the same interview with The Times of London, Wales said:  ”Google is very good at many types of search, but in many instances it produces nothing but spam and useless crap.  Try searching for the term ‘Tampa hote...

Poker-online website infected with a trojan computer virus
2006-12-25 12:52:01
The sheer number of sites dedicated to poker on the internet these days boggles the mind. I’m sure I’m wrong, but other than, um, ‘adult’ websites ? I would imagine sites dedicated to poker are as plentiful as anything on the web. Every possible tool that a poker player could want to improve their game, or bankroll management is available from any number of sites, most times for free. It would be easy for most players to cruise through their daily online existences, and make use of any of these tools, and not think twice about it. But, players do need to think twice. It was discovered recently that a calculator tool that was available for use on poker site checkraised.com had a secret utility built into it that would steal users online poker login information, and transmit the information back to the utilities creator. This utility used something called a rootkit driver, which enabled the operation to occur undetected by the user, and does not show itself wh...

Hasta la Vista
2006-12-25 12:52:01
Why Windows rules the world FROM the end of January any Windows-based personal computer that you buy will come with a new version of Microsoft’s operating system, called Vista . Make no mistake, this is more than just a slicker, prettier version of Microsoft?s current operating system for desktop computers, Windows XP. Vista is considerably quicker, easier and more pleasant to use, and far more stable and secure, than was its predecessor. One of its particular attractions is its more intuitive way of storing, organising and locating files. Included too are better parental controls, a built-in DVD maker, and lots of other improvements. In many ways, especially in its look and feel and ease of use, Vista out-Macs the Mac?s latest operating system?the Tiger version of OS X. However, that could change when Apple releases its Leopard version of OS X in spring. Right now, the big question for most Windows users is one of timing. If they are not about to buy a new Windows PC, should t...
