The First Google Storage Was Built With Legos
2011-12-23 09:00:00 It's been a few months since I wrote about my redundant storage solution that I dubbed the Bauer-Power SAN. If you didn't read that post, I give you instructions on how I made a 20TB SAN using Ubuntu, IET, ZFS, and GlusterFS. Without tooting my own horn, I thought that solution was pretty bad ass. That is until I saw the following. Now, what we have here is not 20TB of storage. In fact, it's way less than that. It's only 40GB of storage made up of 10 4GB hard drives. It's not the size of the storage that makes it cool though. It's not even the fact that it's made with friggin' Legos (Although that is on a whole other level of bad-assness)! The cool thing about it is this is the original back end storage for Google . As in, rules the entire world, and has information on everybody Google. If you have a hard time reading the picture, it says this about the Lego cabinet built in 1996:In 1996 Larry Page and Sergey Brin, then PhD students in Standford CSD, working on the Digital Libr... Am I The Only One Who Hates The New Google Analytics?
2011-12-22 09:00:00 If you are a Google Analytics user, you no doubt have noticed how Google has gone and revamped the way you experience this once awesome free tool. As soon as you log in now you are greeted with a list of your websites that you have to then drill down to click on them to get to the dashboard of said site. Once in there your new dashboard defaults with useless demographic information.I'm sorry Google, but I prefer the old way. The stuff I want to see when I go into Google Analytics is where my traffic is coming from, and what pages people are hitting. I don't particularly care about what language they speak. For one thing, I only speak English, so my site is going to be written in English no matter what. I do place translate buttons on the right for International folks, but I just don't have the time, not the talent to blog in more than one language. Now I know I can drill down to traffic sources, and it now shows in sub-categories like Direct, Referrals and Search. The information ...
Free Open Source Quote and Invoice Software
2011-12-21 09:00:00 In the IT world we deal with a lot of different VARs (Value Added Resellers) to provide us with quotes for purchasing hardware and software. A couple of my vendors use an online quote and invoice management service called Autotask. It's pretty handy, when I ask for a quote on a product, they load it into Autotask and it emails me a link that is good for 30 days or something. If I decide to buy, they can turn around and use that same quote to invoice me, and provide me with a receipt. Now I'm not sure how much Autodesk runs, but I'm sure it isn't cheap. At the beginning of the month I wrote a post on why new business start-ups should use open source instead of paying for expensive software and services like Autodesk. I mentioned a few types of products one can find an open source alternative for, and I found another one to add to the list. It's an open source Invoice, and quote management system called Simple Invoices. From their page:Simple Invoices is a free, open source, web ba... Why You Can't Name a Folder ?CON? in Windows
2011-12-20 09:00:00 There is an interesting thing I learned today while browsing the Internet. I found out that if you create a folder in Windows , right click it and try to rename it to CON it won't work. In fact, in Windows 7 if you try you get an error message that says "The Specified Device Name is Invalid." Some reports say that it will just rename it to "New Folder." I guess it depends on what version of Windows it's running on. Go ahead, and try it. I'll give you a minute... Right, so you see what I'm talking about huh? I thought I would do a Google search to see why that happens. Some people are claiming that even Bill Gates himself doesn't know why! That may or may not be true, but it is documented as to why you can't do it. In fact, I easily found out why on Wikipedia. The reason is because Con is one of a few device files or keywords Windows uses to allow access to certain ports and devices. Here is a list from Wikipedia of all the Device File words. Device key...
Free Your iPod With SharePod
2011-12-19 09:00:00 I used to work at a company where one of the senior systems engineers had a massive music collection saved in his iTunes Library. To protect the iTunes database he saved it on the company network share that was backed up to tape nightly. One of the biggest things that he was preparing for was the limit of iTunes instances one can use with their iPod. You know, because Apple is so DRM happy and proprietarily anal.If my former colleague had heard of SharePod, he may have not needed to be so paranoid about his iTunes Library. That is because SharePod doesn't need iTunes, and will allow him to backup his music safely to a regular file folder that can be used anywhere! In fact, one can use this as an alternative to iTunes for managing their pictures and music on their iPod's and iPod Touch devices. From their about page, here is a list of features:Add & remove music and videos from your iPodAdd, remove and edit playlistsAdd & remove album artView and backup photosCopy music, vid... Free Motion Detection Video Surveillance Software
2011-12-16 09:00:00 Those who know me personally know that I'm a huge James Bond fan. One of the most memorable seens in a James Bond film for me comes from Dr. No where James is getting ready to leave his hotel room, but wants to know if someone breaks in. He does stuff like spreads some talcum powder on his brief case latches, and pulls out a single hair and places it over the crack in his closet doors. When he comes back there are finger prints in the talcum powder, and his hair on the closet door has been removed. Obviously someone was there.Imagine it the Sean Connery Bond had access to today's technology. Too bad he doesn't, but you certainly do. Imagine you are on a business trip like 007 and you are getting ready to go out for a night of Baccarat, and wooing the ladies, and you want to know if someone has been in your room. All you need is your trusty laptop, a webcam and this really cool free software that will activate your webcam if it detects motion in the room. Not only that the software... The Evolution of The Geek [Infographic]
2011-12-15 09:00:00 Funny, but when I was growning up the term geek was not something one would label themself normally. It was a derogatory word that those who were classified as being popular would call those around them that did well academically. Hell, it was something you called a kid just for wearing glasses, or because his parents couldn't afford higher end clothes. It's funny now how things have changed. They have changed for the better in my opinion. These days geeks rule supreme. People are embracing their quirky behavior that makes them a 'geek' and are proudly waving the geek flag, and wearing the geek label like it's a badge of honor. Geek s are finally mainstream even in the media with very popular TV shows like The Big Bang Theory, Chuck, and The IT Crowd. It all started somewhere though didn't it? Take a look at this infographic I found that illustrates the evolution of the modern day geek![Via Flowtown] Related articles, courtesy of Zemanta: Speak Out With Your Geek Out 0: Ori... Cheat at Sending Holiday Cards
2011-12-14 09:00:00 I hear about it every year. From my co-workers, from Facebook and Twitter, and from my family members. One of the most difficult customs to do during the holiday season is sending out Christmas cards to all your friends and family. For many people, it's an annual tradition, and they are happy to do it. For others, it's an annual obligation. Not to mention that if someone sends you are card, you now feel like you have to send them a card, and your mailing list doubles.A few years ago my wife's cousin Tess started sending us cards in the mail that she would order online and have it send directly to us from the printer. When I got the card I immediately thought it was a great idea! It totally takes the burden away of writing out hundreds of cards, and licking and stamping hundreds of envelopes. It's sort of like Amazon that way, where you can find a gift someone wants, have it giftwrapped and mailed directly to them just by clicking a few buttons! The problem with Tess's site is it... HP Makes WebOS Open Platform
2011-12-13 09:00:00 You may still be ecstatic that you got a great deal on that TouchPad with an extra discount from HP coupons, but HP may be at a low point. Headlines around the nation are delivering the news: HP is planning to open-source its WebOS mobile platform. The announcement was made Friday by HP CEO Meg Whitman. For the past year, Whitman had tried to sell the software, acquired by Palm Inc. for approximately $1.2 billion, but no one expressed interest in WebOS. Now, in making WebOS an open-source platform, HP has allowed any individual or company to use or alter the software. This means that WebOS can be put to use in other arenas. For example, theoretically speaking, HTC could step in and produce a new phone using WebOS software. Similarly, HP, or another company, could bring this software into a lightweight, battery-friendly tool for pursuing the web or checking emails. So what are critics saying about this change? Mike Isaac of Wired.com states his opinion loud and clear: “[Whitman&r... More About: Open
Paranoid Much? Spell Illuminati Backwards in Google
2011-12-12 09:00:00 About a week ago my brother in Colorado posted something funny on my Facebook wall. He told me to go to Google and type in Illuminati backwards. For those of you that have a hard time writing words in reverse Illuminate backwards is Itanimulli. I think he posted it because I have been writing a lot of Facebook updates about freaky government stuff like SOPA and NDAA (Which by the way scare the crap out me!)Most of you have probably seen the Da Vinci Code, so you probably already have at least heard of The Illuminati. Some of you haven’t though. So first let’s answer the question for you non-conspiracy theorist types. What is, or who is The Illuminati? According to Wikipedia:The Illuminati is a name given to several groups, both real (historical) and fictitious. Historically the name refers to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment-era secret society founded on May 1, 1776. In more modern contexts the name refers to a purported conspiratorial organization which is alle... More About: Paranoid
Computer Generating Packets in The Trillions?
2011-12-09 09:00:00 As many of you know, I have spent the last two weeks posting articles for AskTheAdmin.com. One of the articles I posted was on a review of a really cool cloud packet analyzer called Cloudshark. I'm currently using Cloudshark along with some other tools like Dumpcap, Wireshark and Microsoft Network Monitor to troubleshoot intermittant network "hiccups" at my company.Apparently my post about Cloudshark gave one Systems Administrator an idea of how he might be able to track down a problem he's been having. After the article, he sent an email to Karl Gechlik of AskTheAdmin who forwarded it to me. Here is the email:Hi there, this article is in reference to El Di Pablo’s article on Cloudshark, he states that he was having a “network issue once a week randomly”. The Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ150: Best of All Worlds
2011-12-08 09:00:00 Many cameras come stocked with enough options and specifications to leave a person doubting one choice over another. With information like ISO, AF, sharpness, graininess, megapixels, and a host of other functions, the pros and cons keep stacking. For snapping a few pictures and taking a few videos, almost any baseline camera works. If a user wants more, then consider the Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ150.The PicturesThe Lumix FZ150 offers 12.1 megapixels, although they're not the most important issues when buying a camera. It also presents users with a long list of shooting modes and special effects, including a panorama assist and a miniature mode. It can shoot JPEG, MPO, and RAW image types. RAW images keep the original picture information and allow advanced photographers to edit their colors.Pictures showed good color and contrast. (See link at bottom for examples.) Why Start-Ups Should Use Open Source
2011-12-07 09:00:00 I currently work for a relatively small start-up firm in La Jolla California, and it's budget time. I'm not going to lie, I am not fond of justifying IT spending, and it rather gets me sick to my stomach. To me IT spending is very necessary in this day and age. Everything runs on computers, and everything is stored as little ones and zeros on hard drives. You really can't escape it any more. If you are a technology company, which is to say you provide some kind of computer based product, IT spending is even more critical.Where I think a lot of start-ups go wrong is in their choice of software. You can't really get away from buying server hardware, but you can get away from spending gobs of money on software if you go with open source from the get go. Even if you have the money to spend on software, why would you not want to take that money and better spend it on faster, more robust hardware? What got me thinking of this is I recently got some quotes on VMware, and Microsoft for n... How To Capture Network Packets From Command Line in Windows
2011-12-02 09:00:00 I have been writing about network sniffing lately. back on the 22nd of last month I talked about using an alternative to Wireshark called Microsoft Network Monitor (MNM). Although I did find that tool to be easier to use, and read data than Wireshark, it simply didn't collect all of the data that I needed it to. You see, if you read that post, you will know that we have this weird intermittent issue where all traffic in or out of one particular VLAN will drop for about 2 to 5 minutes. Just enough time for connections from our production web servers to lose connection with the database on the back end. During these hiccups as I like to call them, all traffic within that VLAN still proceeds without issue.Well we had another hiccup the night before last, and I rushed to my computer, VPN'd into the office, and remoted into the computer where I was running Microsoft Network Monitor. I saw some stuff that threw up red flags, but nothing really conclusive. I sent the packet over to my lo... More About: Windows , Capture

Holiday Review of Set Top Boxes Via Tech Chop
2011-11-28 17:30:00 I hope everyone had a great long weekend! I certainly did. It was nice having four days off with the family to not have to think about work for a bit. Even better was that my wife let me film another installment of Tech Chop! This one was about a month in the making really. I bought two set top boxes, The WD TV Live Plus, and The Boxee Box. Plus my desktop tech Frank let me borrow his Apple TV. I already had the Mvix, which finally crapped out on me and was the inspiration for this whole idea.Anyway, I plugged them in and tested them all out, and came up with this review!I have to say it was so therapeutic smashing the living crap out of the piece of junk Mvix. That thing was fine for about a year, then it would overheat and would stop in the middle of playing a movie with a friggin' "IO Error".I finally settled on the Boxee. It had the snappiest interface, and the coolest apps. I first tried the WD TV Live Plus, but it was rather sluggish. The Apple TV was cool, but I didn't want ... More About: Holiday , Review
Taking A Short Break From Bauer-Power
2011-11-25 09:00:00 Hey guys, first I hope you had a great Thanksgiving yesterday for those of you in America reading the blog. I am sure like me you are stuffed from eating all that delicious Turkey and fixens! I'm also sure you are probably in a drunken stuper right now from dealing with all of your family members and inlaws... errr... My long time buddy Karl over at Ask The Admin has been way too busy to keep up with his Internet presence. Since I am still officially a guest blogger for Ask The Admin, I told him that I would take the reigns for a little while to keep his content current. I mean, his blog is a PR 6 blog, and he has almost 3,000 RSS subscribers. It would be a shame to let that deteriorate. Plus, it will give me an opportunity to promote Bauer-Power and Tech Chop a little more.So if you want to keep up with what I'm doing, stop... More About: Break
Block Adblock On Your Blogger/Blogspot Site
2011-11-24 09:00:00 I guess that title is a misnomer. I mean, this method doesn't really "block" Adblock software per se, but it certainly does the next best thing! You see, a lot of you come here because you are looking for a solution for something. Maybe you are looking for the right freeware to troubleshoot an issue. Maybe you are looking for a cool online tool to help you complete a task easier. Maybe you Googled an error message you were having, and you landed here at Bauer-Power where I helped your ass out. 37 Tips For Using Wireshark
2011-11-23 09:00:00 I talked about an alternative to Wireshark yesterday made by Microsoft called Network Monitor. Alternative To Wireshark in Windows For Network Monitoring and Analysis
2011-11-22 09:00:00 I have been dealing with an intermittant network issue for the past month and a half at work. Maybe once or twice per week, one of our VLANs will drop out for about 5 minutes, then come back up. I was talking with a Network Engineer friend of mine, and he thought it was probably a spanning-tree issue, however I'm not convinced of that. I explained the issue to another friend of mine who has been doing networking for a really long time, and he doesn't think it's a spanning-tree issue because only the one VLAN goes down, and all traffic on that VLAN doesn't stop. Anything on that VLAN can still talk to each other, it's the inter-VLAN routing that stops working, and that is handled by the firewall.Great, so look at the firewall right? Prepare For SOPA Round Two
2011-11-18 10:00:00 Well my fellow anti Internet Blacklisters, according to the guys over at Fight For The Future, the Internet stepped up to answer the call to protect our freedoms on the Internet from the proposed Internet Blacklist legislation known as SOPA and the Protect IP act. According to Ars Technica, even Nancy Pelosi (Who I normally despise) has joined the opposition to SOPA. According to Timothy B. Lee: Reacting to a tweet from San Francisco resident Jeffrey Rodman, the San Francisco Democrat tweeted on Thursday that her colleagues "need to find a better solution than #SOPA." She also urged Congress: "#DontBreakTheInternet." This seems to be the first time Pelosi has weighed in on the SOPA debate, and it suggests that the concerns of SOPA's critics are being heard on the Democratic side of the aisle. That?s all well and good folks, but the fight isn?t over. Keep pounding your representatives and ask them to vote down this bill that may very well strip away some o...

How Blackhat SEOs Send Comment Spam
2011-11-15 09:00:00 I posted last week about how I dabble in the Blackhat SEO world. I mainly do this for my own personal knowledge on how search engines work, and how to improve my blog?s search engine results. The interesting thing about how these guys game the search system, you learn about how it all works. It?s kind of like hacking or modding in that way. When you pull the machine or the program apart to see how you can change, or manipulate it, you learn way more about how it was designed to work in the first place. Anyway, back on topic, so one of the big time goals for SEO professionals in the past was to increase their website?s PageRank in Google. Other search engines have their own search mechanism?s, but Google?s always seemed be the best one to game, because it always provided the best results for your search. That?s why they are number one! If you had a good PageRank, then the rest of the search engines would pick up your site naturally. Before I get any further, let?s look at what Page... Great Geocaching Alternative to C:GEO
2011-11-14 09:00:00 It's been a while since I've posted about one of my favorite past times which is Geocaching. Geocaching, if you didn't already know, is a sport or game where someone hides a container somewhere in the world, then posts the coordinates to the container on a website like Geocaching.com or Opencaching.com. People like me try to find these containers using GPS enabled devices. I prefer to find my caches using my HTC Evo Android phone. When I first started Geocaching, I was using my Palm Pre, and the Geocaching app for the Pre sort of sucked. When I got my Android, I discovered C:GEO and my life changed. It was a free app, but had many of the features available in the official app by Groundspeak which costs about $10.What's the deal then? Well, a while back the original developer of C:GEO stopped working on it, and turned his code over the the community, and C:GEO Opensource was born. Well, in my opinion, that version sucks. I can't log my finds directly from the app when I'm in the... More About: Alternative , Great
Autoblogging With Blogger and iAutoblog

Mysterious Black Screen of Death in Windows 7
More articles from this author:2011-11-08 09:00:00 I had an interesting issue pop up the other day that I hadn't seen before. When I researched it online it was being dubbed the Black Screen of Death . Kind of like the Blue Screen of death, but different. As you probably know, a Blue Screen of Death is basically when Windows goes into panic mode and shuts down usually due to hardware or driver issues, but not always. Well the Black Screen of Death is different. When you get a Black Screen of Death, Windows appears to still be running, just everything is black. When you boot up your computer, you will see the Windows splash screen, then the screen will go black and you may see a mouse for a few minutes, but the login screen never comes up. Just dark emptiness, like the heart of a cruel ex-girlfriend... I digress... Anyway, when looking online I saw several options to try. Option number one was to boot the computer into low resolution mode. That seemed to help users who had problems with their video drivers. That didn't work for ...
