Another Alternative to Pandora One
2012-02-10 09:00:00
Ever since Pandora, the internet radio site, changed their layout it broke my favorite desktop client for Pandora called Open Pandora. True, I could upgrade to Pandora One, but I'm a cheap bastard. Also true, I can just listen to Pandora from my web browser, but sometimes I just don't like to have my browsers open all the time. Hence the need for a desktop client.Well I found a very cool little application on the Hak5 Forums from a user named ZigZagJoe called the Standalone Pandora Client. This little player does not work in anonymous mode, so you have to have a Pandora login to use it, but that's no big deal. You will also need .Net Framework 2.0. If you have a Linux computer, this will run in WINE, you just need to check the box for WINE compatibility at install. After you install it, you have a very lightweight client to listen to Pandora without your browser! Here is a list of features:Supports creating and seeding stations by searching for musicSupports deletion and rena...

Which is Better? PHP, Ruby or Python? [Infographic]
2012-02-09 09:00:00
I guess this is the week of infographics here at Bauer-Power. That is mainly because I am preparing for yet another colocation facility move at my day job. This will be the third colocation move I have been involved with since being in IT, and let me tell you it is rather stressful. There are a lot of things riding on systems at one's data center, and there are a lot of potential hazards if you don't prepare the move down to the most minute detail.Today's infographic aims to compair three of today's modern open source coding platforms, PHP, Ruby and Python. All of which are used in web applications. Some of the biggest websites use these languages including Facebook (PHP), Twitter (Ruby), and Youtube (Python). Which one is the best though? That's up to you, but hopefully this infographic comparison can help you decide which one you like the best.[Via Udemy]del.icio.us tags: ruby, python, php,&n bsp;comparison, which, better,& nbsp;programming, langua...
One Way Bad Guys Steal Your Credit Cards
2012-02-08 09:00:00
My parents and my brother came out to visit me during Christmas last year. I didn't hear about it until January, but apparently during that time my Dad's credit card or bank card number had been stolen. Some fraudulent charges were made, but luckily he watches his accounts regularly and was able to dispute the charges and get the old card cancelled. No real harm was done because he caught it in time, but it certianly was an inconvenience to have to cancel the card, and get it replaced. We often hear about credit card data stolen from online merchants. It's actually fairly common. I mean back in January last year, the Internet shoe giant, Zappos was hacked exposing 24 million accounts and credit card numbers. Online hacking is just one way the bad guys get your information. The other place? Right at your neighborhood ATM!Bad guys are placing devices on ATM machines called Skimmers. According to Wikipedia, an ATM Skimmer is a device that is placed over the card reader on an AT...

Enhance Your Google Kung-Fu [Infographic]
2012-02-07 09:00:00
I'm glad I found this infographic. It comes on the heels of one of my coworkers asking me about certain Google search functions to help make searching easier, and to help find more relavent data to what one is looking for. She is writing up some training material to help her train her research team to gather more information on the web from search engines like Google. She is certainly not the only one who can benefit from something like this though. In fact, I would venture to say that this is a valuable skill for IT professionals as well. I mean Google is probably the most common uncredited company tech support's knowlege base than any other knowlege base application. If you can't Google your way out of a problem in IT, you won't last long. Check out this really great infographic that gives you tips on how to enhance your Google searching skills![Via HackCollege] Related articles, courtesy of Zemanta: From Google to Facebook, online privacy concerns aren't going away ...
How Hackers Get In [Infographic]
2012-02-06 09:00:00
I recently took over the role of Security Officer for my company. One of the reasons I was awarded the role was because of my Bachelor of Science degree in Network Security. Now with that degree I certainly don't consider myself a hacker, nor would I ever venture to say I know all there is to know about network security, but I am versed in the basics and concepts of many security threats businesses face in these times.I mean look at the news. It would almost seem that security breaches are happening even more frequently do to "hacktavist" groups like Anonymous. If your company takes a political stand that goes against the groups beliefs, you better believe they will come after you. So what should you look out for? Here is an interesting infographic I found that talks about the main ways hackers "get in." Check it out! My Biggest Weakness in IT? I'm A Tinkerer!
2012-02-03 09:00:00
A few months ago I wrote about one of my biggest weaknesses in IT is networking. I mean I am Network+ certified, and I can subnet, and do a basic configuration of a switch with VLANs and such, but it's not really my strongest skill. I am more of a systems guy. I am more proficient in servers, software, active directory domains, etc. Even though networking is my weakness, I don't think it's my greatest weakness. No, my greatest weakness is that I am a tinkerer. What I mean by that is that I have a serious problem of leaving well enough alone when it comes to servers and networking. I often find myself in a position where I see something, and get it in my head that although it is working fine, I can make it better if I only do (fill in the blank). That more times than I like has come to bite me in the ass.I don't know too many IT guys that will readily admit their weaknesses. Most of the IT guys I know have really big egos, and it's hard for them to admit when they are wrong...
Zombies vs Supermodels
2012-02-02 09:00:00
Have you ever watched one of those super model contest shows like America's Next Top Model, or Make Me A Supermodel? No? Errr... Me neither. Ok, but you have seen stock footage of emaciated models walking down a runway during a fashion show right? How many times have you said outlout, "Give that girl a sandwich!"? Oh, am I the only one? Anyway, a lot of these girls look like walking skeletons! What does this have to do with geekiness or technology? I'm sure you're asking yourself this right about now. Let me tell you, I found a funny picture on the Internet the other day that does a side by side comparison of a supermodel vs a zombie! Zombies are friggin' awesome, and thus this post does very well belong here. Why wouldn't you compare a walking skeleton to a zombie? Stages of Pulling The All-Nighter For College
2012-02-01 09:00:00
Remember back in your college days right before an exam, or perhaps during the final weeks of class and the big 30 page compare and contrast paper was due? Did you begin preparing for the exam when the professor told you about it? Hells no! Did you begin researching your paper when it was assigned right after mid-terms? Screw that! Nope, you did what everyone else does. Wait until the last friggin? minute, then try to pull an all-nighter to get it all done. It?s a strenuous game of choking back Red Bulls and trying not to give into exhaustion from the huge weekend kegger you went to the night before. That?s okay because you?ve done it before right? Think X-Men is Fake? Apparently Mutants Really Do Exist!
2012-01-31 09:00:00
I was fiddling around the interwebs the other day and came across a really interesting video. It's of a boy named Nong Youhui from Southern China that has a really amazing ability. One that you probably would only see in comics or in an X-Men movie. Young Nong has glow-in-the-dark eyes, and he has friggin' night vision! Medical tests show that Nong can read perfectly in the dark, and can see as clearly as we all do during the day! Also, Doctors looking into this strange ?super power? can?t find anything medically wrong, or harmful with his ability that is very similar to that of a cat. Free Open Source Cloning and Software Deployment
2012-01-30 09:30:00
I once wrote here on Bauer-Power about a really great open source cloning solution called FOG. Not only does it handle disk cloning though, but it can do a lot of computer management tasks. It can deploy software, it can rename computers, it can map printers, it can even join computers to Active Directory. All of this for free!I also wrote an article on how to Sysprep Windows 7 easily. The main reason I wrote that one is because the standard method for creating an answer XML file for Sysprep in Windows 7 is kind of a pain in the butt. My way simplifies it with the help of a free 3rd party tool.Well I got a related email from Bauer-Power reader, Matt Bradley, on Sysprepping Windows 7 based on my article above, and how FOG's FOGCrypt program fit in. In this latest Tech Chop, I tell you more about FOG, and I try to answer Matt's question about FOGCrypt! What do you think? Did I answer Matt's question? Do you have a question yourself about FOG? Anonymous Taking Down Facebook Tomorrow? Is The Threat Real or Fake?
2012-01-27 09:00:00
I read on CNET the other day that Anonymous is planning a massive cyber attack on the social networking giant Facebook tomorrow, January 28th at 12:00AM. Then later on down the article it says that a tweet from @AnonOps said that the video is a hoax. So is the threat real?It may be real if enough idiots actually listen to the video and download the DDoS tools Low Orbit Ion Cannon or High Orbit Ion Cannon as the notes for the Youtube video suggest. It may not be officially sponsored by the group who started Anonymous, but then again Anonymous is an idea not a group right? So if enough people get together, then that makes the threat real, however doubtful their success may be.In the video the computerised voice says that even though Facebook has over 60,000, they can still be brought down. Possible maybe, but doubtful. According to the response from Facebook's representative in the CNET article:We expect Anonymous just like we expect any other attack on any other day. Due to ou...

Got a Nasty Virus? Sweep That Crap On Boot Up!
2012-01-26 09:00:00
I am a huge fan of Microsoft?s latest antivirus programs. I have used many antivirus programs over the years, Norton, McAfee, Symantec, AVG, Sophos, TrendMicro, etc. I have had the best results from Microsoft Security Essentials, and it?s corporate counterpart Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection. Microsoft has stepped up to the security plate again, this time offering a really cool free tool that is based on Microsoft Security Essentials product that will allow you to boot to a USB drive, and run an offline malware scan. The tool is called Microsoft System Sweeper. From the download page: Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Beta is not a replacement for a full antivirus solution providing ongoing protection; it is meant to be used in situations where you cannot start your PC due to a virus or other malware infection. Ubuntu Getting Rid of Menus for HUD? Screw That!
2012-01-25 09:00:00
I have been a long time Ubuntu user. I have used it since at least version 5.04. It has seriously been the base for all things I have ever learned in Linux. Like most people I started out on the Linux desktop with Ubuntu and moved up to servers when I started getting more familiar with the terminal and it's commands. Things have been changing on Ubuntu a lot over the last few releases, and I'm now rather over the awesomeness that Ubuntu once was.I just read today that the upcoming release of Ubuntu, version 12.04, is doing another drastic change. The last big one was forcing Unity down everyone's throats. Some people like it I guesss, but I'm a Gnome man and I like to keep my UI's the way they are. I am familiar with them, and I know where everything is. When Ubuntu made Unity the default I started to get a little ticked at them. With the news I learned about today that they are going to ditch their menus for a HUD or Head's Up Display, they are replacing menus from all the ap...

Blogging is going to be few and far between people. I am suffering from a pretty good case of writer?s block. I haven?t had to solve any new big problems at work lately with some cool new open source platform, so the projects that often fuel my most popular articles aren?t needed right now, and here we are. I thought I would share with you something I found though which sounds very cool. It allows you to drag and drop three photos of particular scene and it automagically crops out the stuff you don?t want. Tourists , cars, mother-in-laws, whatever! It?s called Tourist Remover from Snapmania. From their page: Remove moving objects such as tourists or passing cars from your photos. Anonymous Pissed About MegaUpload Being Taken Down
2012-01-20 09:00:00
If you hadn't heard, the file hosting site called MegaUpload was recently taken down by the US Government after the FBI served warrants in New Zealand to arrest the website's owner, Kim Dotcom, and several others. The US Government was able to seize the websites MegaUpload, MegaLive, MegaPorn and MegaVideo along with $50 Million in assets. The funny thing about this? The US Government didn't need SOPA or PIPA to do it either. Which begs the question, if the US Government has the power to server warrants in other countries, why the hell do they even need legislation like SOPA and PIPA to censor the internet? The news of these sites being taken down in the looming shadow of the PIPA and SOPA debates as infuriated the Internet hacktavist group Anonymous, who began a campaign last night via Twitter called #OpMegaUpload to launch DDoS attackes on sites owned by the FBI, The Department of Justice, The MPAA and the RIAA. Apparently, this is the most wide-spread attack ever conducted by t...
How-To Bypass DNS-Based Web Filtering on Android
2012-01-19 09:00:00
Hello everyone! How about that Internet blackout yesterday to protest SOPA and PIPA huh? If you were affected by it, let me know in the comments. I was not affected by it because I was in Tucson, AZ for the last few weeks for family business and have been away from a computer. That also explains why there haven't been any new posts here in a while. I've just been pre-occupied with other things.Anyhoo, I'm back and I thought I would write up something quick on how to bypass DNS-Based web filtering on your Android phone. To give you some background on this post, you may know that I am a big fan of OpenDNS. I think it provides a great, free webfiltering solution for small business. It's easy to setup, and will block known malicious sites to help keep your network free of malware. It can also be used to filter out sites like Facebook and Twitter to keep your employees on track, and block out the distractions. The only problem with OpenDNS is that it's purely DNS based filtering. Th...

EasyDNS Got Hit By a DDoS Attack Saturday
2012-01-09 09:00:00
Greetings everyone, I hope you had a better weekend than me. You see, since I am the Systems Engineer for my company, I am pretty much on-call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Maybe in the future we will be able to do some sort of rotation, but since we are a small company that is just not going to happen any time soon. Anyway, on Saturday , January 7th I started getting some strange email alerts. I would get a message saying one of my company websites was down from our external monitoring company, but when I went to browse to the site, it was up. I would get an email from one of our customers saying they couldn't pull data from our API, but our services were up. It was on and off for a few hours, and there was nothing in the web server logs suggesting issues. Then it hit me, "I wonder if there is a problem with DNS." My company uses EasyDNS for our public DNS services. We chose them for their custom TTL, and the ability to do instant DNS failover. Also, they had some re...
Me Free Running at The Beach (Stop Laughing!)
2012-01-06 09:00:00
For all of you haters who watched Tech Chop Episode 12 and didn't think I would ever go out and do some free running then you are sadly mistaken my friends! That's right, the other day I went to the beach in Carlsbad, CA and my wife caught this epic video of me doing some free running! What? What is freerunning you say? Well let me just say that it is probably one of the most bad ass things you will ever see. In fact, it is so bad ass, you see it a lot in movies these days. You saw freerunning in Casino Royale, in Die Hard With a Vengeance and there was even a B-Rated action flick called Free runner. From Wikipedia:Freerunning (or free running) is a form of urban acrobatics in which participants, known as freerunners (or practitioners, though this is a generic term used for freerunning and parkour), use the city and rural landscape to perform movements through its structures. It incorporates efficient movements from parkour, and adds aesthetic vaults and other acrobatics, such as str...

Quit Smoking Via Text Messages
2012-01-05 09:00:00
On Monday I posted my latest Tech Chop where I laid out my 10 new years resolutions for 2012. In the video I give a lot of IT related resolutions, and also a few regular ones like working out on my Total Gym clone again. One I did not do, because I kicked the habbit years ago, is quit smoking.I think it's safe to say that quitting smoking and losing weight are probably the two most common resolutions people make for New Years. In my experience, losing weight is easy, it's quitting smoking that is truly difficult. I ended up quitting by using the nicotine patch. Even with the patch, it was a daily struggle to fight the cravings. What if you don't want to use the patch, or the gum? What if you think you are strong enough mentally to kick smoking cold turkey? I may have something that may help. It's a texting service from Smokefree.gov called SmokefreeTXT. From their page:SmokefreeTXT is a free mobile service designed for young adults across the United States. SmokefreeTXT was creat...

Google, Amazon, Facebook, eBay and More May Go Dark to Protest SOPA
2012-01-04 09:00:00
If you have been following me on Twitter you know how I feel about the current bill proposals in the US Government these days to stop online piracy. These bills, although designed to stop illegal copyright infringement online, will do more harm than good though. In fact they will do little or nothing to stop piracy, but could harm many websites like Youtube and Facebook. If a 13 year old girl decided to put up a cover of a Katy Perry song on Youtube, the record companies could force Youtube to take down the video, or face having their site shutdown by the government. This is a clear violation of our first ammendment which gives us the freedom of speech at the request of special interests like the sleeze bags at the RIAA.The internet is up in arms over these bills called PIPA and SOPA which will give the US government the same authority to censor the internet like China and Iran, and frankly it is very scary. One of the most well known supporters of the bills was GoDaddy which lost o...

My New Years Resolutions
2012-01-03 09:00:00
Happy Welcome Back to Work Day everyone! I hope you all had a safe and happy New Years celebration over the weekend! If you are like me, then you are back to work today, and for some of you you also have some New Years resolutions. I am no different, I thought about it over the break and came up with some things I wanted to do this year.I decided to do the first Tech Chop of the year from my car since my parents and my brother were in town from Colorado, and I couldn't set up my green screen and lighting like I normally do. The audio kind of sucks also because I used my cheap Aiptek camera that has a sub-par mic jack. It was the best one to use in my car though because it was easy to mount. I also bought a new lavalier micophone, so I'm hoping future episodes have better audio quality.Anyway, in this episode, I give you my 10 resolutions for 2012:Do you have any New Years resolutions? Are they IT related? Are they standard ones? What do you want to change in the new year? Let me k...
My New Favorite Free Media Converter
2012-01-03 09:00:00
In the past for media conversions I always like Pazera's free converters. The problem with Pazera's converters is that there is a separate converter for each format. If you want to convert AVI to MP4, you have to download one converter, if you want to go from FLV to MPEG, that's another one. It adds up fast if you do a lot of media conversions.I found one today while looking for a free MP4 to FLV converter. It's called Quick Media Converter HD or QMC. Like just about every media converter out there it is a GUI front end for FFMPEG. This tool is really easy to use, and you don't need to be a super genius to click the buttons and convert files. Here is a screen shot of it so you can get an idea of what you get with it: As you can see from the picture, it's really intuitive. The icons across the top in Easy Mode really does make it easy to use. One thing I should tell you is that this software is packaged with a tool bar that you can opt-out of at insstall time. Too Passive Aggressive? My IT FAQ's Sign
2011-12-30 09:00:00
I haven't been in the IT business as long as some of you, but I have been in it long enough to know that users like to do "drive by" walk-up support with their issues. Some people are worse at it than others, and what those people that are guilty of the "drive by" fail to realize is that they are cutting in line in front of people who actually follow the rules and use the proper channels of getting IT support.Almost every single "drive by" abuser asks the same thing with their walk-up. "Do I need to submit a ticket for this?" or "Do you want me to create a ticket for this?". Guess what Jack? The answer is, and always will be YES!I think the big misconception is that if they do a walk-up they will get their support faster. If there is a true emergency, this might be true, but if it's a simple Outlook issue, then that isn't the case. These "drive-by" gangstas don't realize that it actually behooves them to submit a ticket. Why? Because if an IT person has a ticket in their queue t...

Free Remote Support Extension for Chrome
2011-12-29 09:00:00
A while back I blogged about a free remote support program called ShowMyPC that allows you to support a user remotely by having you both download and run their program that opened a VNC session so you can control the other user's desktop. It was kind of clunky, just like regular VNC, but it worked well enough. I supported many remote users with ShowMyPC.Being able to remotely control a user's computer makes life way easier for an IT person. With remote support tools, you no longer have to try to explain to a user where the Start button is located. You can just remote in, and fix their issue without hastle, and without having to dumb anything down so they can understand you easier.I found a new extension for Chrome that works a lot like ShowMyPC, except it's built into your Chrome browser, and works cross platform. The only requirement is that both computers need to have Chrome. The extension is called Chrome Remote Desktop BETA. From the Chrome store:Chrome Remote Desktop BETA is...

Awesome Simple Free Embedded FLV Flash Player
2011-12-28 09:00:00
I began the search the other day for a good embedded flash player that I could use to play my own custom FLV files over on Tech Chop. Normally I would just embed my video from Youtube, but in my latest episode I got a new sponsor that is paying per download. Awesome ! The only problem with that is my videos from sites like Youtube, Blip.tv, Viddler etc. aren't getting counted. No count, no pay!In order for my video's to be counted, I have to be able to add a custom download tracker redirect from my partners at the Tech Podcast Network. That also means that I have to use a custom player where I can use a custom download URL for my video. I tried a few others like JW Player , and Flowplayer, but I didn't like them too much. Plus they had so many damned files you had to host somewhere, and configuration was just more complicated than it needed to be.I found one out of Russia that is way easier to use, and you only need to host ONE file! It's called GDD FLV Player. Here are the featur...

Eaton 5PX R/T Review
2011-12-27 09:00:00
Last week over on Tech Chop I posted an early episode. I normally would have waited to post it until January but Technorati Media, the ones who hooked me up with the Eaton 5PX review model, requested that I publish my episode a little sooner. They were working on behalf of Eaton to find small blogs like mine to do a review. When I filled out the questionaire to let them know I was interested, I mentioned that I also do a monthly video show on Tech Chop, and that is what peaked Eaton's interest.Any way, I finally got the episode done, and posted by the 20th. At the time of this writing, I haven't heard back on if the guys at Eaton liked it or not, but it's done. Even though they gave me the Eaton 5PX to review and keep, I still wanted to make sure I gave an honest review of the product. Long story short, it's pretty awesome for a UPS unit. I mean, you would be hard pressed to find a fancier piece of equipment that provides battery backup for your servers.Anyway, here is the video...

Join The Fight Against Phishing
2011-12-26 09:00:00
The Internet is a wonderful thing. When I was a kid my dad use to tell me that anything I wanted to know can be found in a book. While this still holds true, I find that anything I want to know can be found quicker on the Internet.Even though the Internet is a great resource for improving one's knowledge about pretty much everything, it can also be a dangerous place for those that are not very computer savvy. Hell, even really savvy computer people can sometimes fall victim to cyber crime. One of the biggest, and easiest methods of cyber crime is Phishing .For those of you living under a rock, according to Wikipedia:Phishing is a way of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT administrators are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting public. Phishing is typi...

The First Google Storage Was Built With Legos

It's been a few months since I wrote about my redundant storage solution that I dubbed the Bauer-Power SAN. If you didn't read that post, I give you instructions on how I made a 20TB SAN using Ubuntu, IET, ZFS, and GlusterFS. Without tooting my own horn, I thought that solution was pretty bad ass. That is until I saw the following. Now, what we have here is not 20TB of storage. In fact, it's way less than that. It's only 40GB of storage made up of 10 4GB hard drives. It's not the size of the storage that makes it cool though. It's not even the fact that it's made with friggin' Legos (Although that is on a whole other level of bad-assness)! The cool thing about it is this is the original back end storage for Google . As in, rules the entire world, and has information on everybody Google. If you have a hard time reading the picture, it says this about the Lego cabinet built in 1996:In 1996 Larry Page and Sergey Brin, then PhD students in Standford CSD, working on the Digital Libr...
