Outlook 2007 indexing bug
2007-08-16 21:19:00
Im really not much of a fan of Outlook 2007: Its slow and buggy. It keeps loosing my search folders, that i use for handling of categorized emails - and I have given op the use of flags, as they keep disappearing. Its horrendously slow - and it often freezes while attempting to open the most interesting of my mails. I have learned to live with this in anticipation of a service pack, that will adresse these problems, as I fell in love with the search. But now for weeks I haven't been able to find mails, that I know I have in my folders with search phrases that should return these mails. When searching I get the message "Search results may be incomplete because items are stil being indexed. Click here for more details". When clicking I am told that Outlook is currently indexing my mails, and some number of remaining items across all open mailboxes. This number has now been the same for weeks. No indexing is happening. It seems Outlook ...

A new www.amino.dk has seen the light
2007-08-14 10:45:00
I am the responsible developer for the danish entrepreneur site and community www.amino.dk where I work full time with developing new features and improving the existing platform. For years we have been running an antiquated debate forum on the IdealBB software, the old classic asp solution. It was buggy, featureless and really didn't fit in between all of our own .Net 2.0 solutions. So we decided to shift to the very promising Community Server and we have been planning this change of platform for some time now. Yesterday was the day we moved almost 150.000 posts, and more than 11.000 user profiles, and it went pretty well. It was a tough day, we faced a lot of unexpected problems, and there are still a heap of bugs to take care of, but we pretty much pulled it of without loosing anything important. In the following days the new site will be crawled and all pages and threads will be paired up with the old URLS and 301 redirected, so that search engines will not ge...

The Easiest way to create a local Copy of your SQL Database with a differen
2007-08-08 13:54:00
Every so often I come across the task to create a local copy of a database for testing purposes or to host for an external consultant or freelancer. Every time I seem to forget how to do this the easiest possible way, so this time im blogging it both to share, and to save it for next time. If you know how to do even easier og better, please let me know, and i will update the script: USE master GO -- Create a database backup of the database -- that you want a copy of, and insert the -- path as the BackupFileName below DECLARE @BackupFileName NVARCHAR(2000) SET @BackupFileName = 'D:BackupackupsAminoUser ewbackup.bak' -- Find the logical name for both the Data and Log file -- (right click database, properties, Files) -- And enter names in the below DECLARE @DataFileName NVARCHAR(200) SET @DataFileName = 'AminoUser' DECLARE @LogFileName NVARCHAR(200) SET @LogFileName = 'AminoUser_log' -- What do you want the new database to be called? DECLARE @NewDatabase Name NVARCHAR(20...

Multiple Monitors with Windows Vista
2007-08-03 20:55:00
A few months ago i got a second monitor for my developer rig, and that has really increased my productivity. Any developer who has gone from one to two monitors, will tell you that they can never go back. In a fit of irritation a few days ago, i finally got around to ordering the third monitor, that I have been contemplation for a while. I got the 24" BenQ FP241W 1920x1200 TFT Wide, and it is as nice as the reviews will tell you: http://www.trustedreviews.com/displays/re view/2006/09/13/BenQ-FP241W-24in-Widescre en-Monitor/p1 Eagerly i started my day with unpacking the beast, and rearranging my desk fitting the new larger screen in between my laptop on the left and my old second screen on my right. But obviously I forgot my thinking hat, while ordering the third screen, as although I have 2 outputs on my IBM Advanced Dock, one DVI and one VGA, the graphics card really only has one output; therefore i had to live all of yesterday still with only two screens, ...

8 Invaluable Remote Desktop Tips
2007-03-25 22:54:00
In my work I use Remote Desktop all the time for a lot of different purposes. I connect to client production and staging servers, to development and proof of concept VPC's, to local servers and machines and even localhost. So it is a big part of my working day. I have summed up a few tips for the daily use of remote desktop, that will make things easier and solve common problems: 1.  When you get the "Terminal server has exceeded the maximum number of allowed connections" and you can't connect to the machine in the normal way, it is normally still possible to connect to the console session of the machine: Open a command prompt and enter the following, inserting the relevant servername or ip adress where indicated: mstsc /v:<server> /console Use this connection to disconnect the running sessions, and then log off and connect in the normal way, to prevent problems with accessing the machine locally. More information.  2. Y...

MicroISV Software Distribution with Wannakey
2007-03-24 15:30:00
As i have mentioned a few times on this blog, I am currently working on yet another Todo List application. This application is developed from the needs that has arisen from my daily work as a lead software developer, and I think its going to be quite a killer app combining instant access to add and manage work items, without lifting your hands from the keyboard with modern Web 2.0 sharing capabilities etc. As version 1.0 is nearing its completion, I am obviously considering how to distribute this software, and I have decided that there will be something free (as in beer) and something better available at a small cost, say $19.95. Giving stuff away for free is pretty easy, and only limited by bandwith, but as a Micro ISV how do you handle payment and licensing on an international scale? I don't want to give a potential customer any excuse not to buy the software.  Therefore I have designed it to look Vista-like, it will be Vista Certified (hopefully - see my post abou...

IE6 VPC Refresh Now Available at IEBlog
2007-03-21 10:23:00
Last week I wrote a post about the IE6 VPC that is going to expire on the April 1st, with a somewhat harsh tone. Today I am glad to realize that a refreshed version has been made available for download with an expiration date of July 23rd. The good news is, that the VPC releases will be refreshed as long as it is necessary. The bad news is, that you need to get the new release every few months, unless you have an MSDN subscription. The download has been reduced to just under 400 MB, and the content hasn't changed. WGA still doesn't work on the virtual machine, but if you have a specific application you need installed, let them know, an leave a comment in the Post on IEBlog and it might be adressed in future releases. A Technical Blog is a Quick Reference Log of Solutions
2007-03-20 11:36:00
This might alreay be obvious to you, but it occured to me that my blog in the future, will be a great reference to the solutions, that i will have found at that time to everyday developing problems. Sometimes I get stuck with a problem, that I know I have already solved once, but I can't seem to remember the exact solution - and I didn't write down the solution, when I found it. This is where the blog is a handy lifehack tool, that keeps you logging all the problems you encounter, and the solutions you find. Other people with similar problems might find some help in your blog, but in time, so will You. So blog persistently, it will not only help others, but you will benefit greatly from it, in the future - and your memory is probably not going to get better over time.
